Hindustan belongs to Hindustanis or Hindus?

A leader of the ruling BJP’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has suggested that India is a Hindu state and “citizens of Hindustan should be known as Hindus”, provoking a political storm. People staying in Hindustan were known as Hind, then Hindi and there after Hindu. Peoples of Hindustan are Hindi speaking people. Hinduism is a religious reference and not a geographical reference. The entire world recognises Indians as Hindus therefore India is a Hindu state. This is a very simple thing, if inhabitants of England are English, those of Germany are Germans and USA are Americans, all those who live in Hindustan are known as Hindus, and this is what Bhagwat expressed. Actually, Bhagwat was trying to hint that all living in India have ancestors who were Hindus. Many of the Hindus were influenced by other religions and converted to various other religions. However, their heritage remains with Hindu dharma. The cultural identity of all Indians is Hindutva and the present population of the country are offspring of this great culture. There was no reason to widely condemn the comment but several parties reminded that the Constitution used the name “Bharat” for India, not “Hindustan”.

He also said that the BJP came to power at the Centre because the common man wanted change. Dissenting with the suggestion that the BJP’s victory was solely due to Prime Minister Modi’s personal pull, an individual alone could not have ensured the party’s victory. It is always people of India, who will decide, what they want, not anybody else. Mr. Bhagwat called spade a spade. Some individual were taking too much credit for the change. Bhagwat should understand that nomination of Modi as PM candidate definitely made difference and of course Amit Shah deserves the Man of the Match for the known fact that he worked hard to make UP people aware and get 73 seats out of 80. Moreover, Modi in his recent speech thanked each and every member including small and big for their contribution in the victory. Modi never said it was his victory and in all the public speeches he said it was party’s victory.

Common man wanted a change and in this expectation they voted for BJP. They have serious concerns under Congress rule. They got fed up with scams and corruption in every nook and corner. RSS is a part of the success story but they are not the main plank either. Bhagawat should know that they capitalised on the negative sentiment against Congress. BJP must run professionally with no communal feelings and deliver according to the promise they have made to people. Mohan Bhagwat has very correctly summed up the reasons for the BJP win although he has not spoken that RSS cadre, Modi, Shah and the common man are jointly responsible to steer BJP to power at the center. If we see how the educated and people from well to do families (young and old) first joined Ram Dev’s outfit, then Anna Hazare and then AAP to find a Governance body that delivers India and link it with frustration of the common man sans any resources to live his life that could not be influenced by liquor and money at polling time then the nation’s mood turned to Modi (but not to BJP).

Shah was Modi’s intellectual output and it worked. Now, the things appear to be changing with some of the old lieutenants of BJP think-tank still outmaneuvering Modi’s efforts. Now, it is for Modi and Shah to deliver. Let us see what is in India’s fate as they are listening to the very timely and very right advice of Mohan Bhagwat. In BJP there was same bunch of leaders like LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, Kalyan Singh, Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari etc, however after Modi came into the picture, things changed for the BJP. BJP would have not won if Modi was not there. If the leader wants to give credit then give it to one man of the team of players just as we are doing in case of failure.

Bhagwat’s statements came a day after Modi hailed the new BJP president, Amit Shah, as the “man of the match” for his performance during the elections, and said the Modi government was headed in the “right direction”. Attributing the win to people’s yearning for change, Bhagwat said if the people are not happy, they would change this government too in the next general elections. Political changes have happened earlier because of people. In future too, such change will depend on them.
Monumental corruption and global scams supported by the first family is the major reason for the downfall of Congress. As long as the family kept quiet and ignored the public outcry against such misdeeds while making PM a puppet, they deserve the place where they are in. Unless BJP makes grave mistakes, there is no chance for the family coming to power and Congress should be rebuilt from ground on leaving the family behind. Unless and until the party starts looking beyond Rahul and Priyanka to salvage their beaten image, things are not going to improve and crowds of sycophants would not allow doing so. Common party workers have to revolt to bring suitable change to set the party at right place else there is no hope of reviving Congress Party. Congress is in deep crisis, from a party encompassing the democratic, modern, plural ethos it slowly changed into a corrupt, authoritarian in its working, centralised, hypocrite and oblivious of the changing paradigm.

Whatever Bhagwat said was purely a common statement; he wanted to specify two things that the people living in this country are known as Hindus and the victory to BJP is credited to its voter. I don’t think Bhagwat spoke anything out of insecurity or with the intention to cause outrage. Anyway, media needs some gossip to survive.
