It’s better that girls are never born in India

It is a much bigger problem than we are assuming. Still, girls are hated in most of the parts of the country and we are living in a male chauvinist in 21st century. Female foetus is aborted during pregnancy, anyhow if she takes birth then evil eyes waits till she grow at a particular age and then the cruel world rapes, molests and murders her. Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are states where we can get many examples, where woman cannot live with dignity. The father of one of the two girls, who was gang-raped and killed in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district, lashed out at the government’s offer of compensation; he needs justice more than the compensation. His daughters have gone through brutality and are paying for their dignity which is not enough. A rapist needs to be taught a lesson. Unless and until they are not punished harshly, such incidences will not stop. His 15-year-old daughter and her 14-year-old cousin had gone missing from their home after they stepped out to relieve themselves. They could have been saved if police had acted promptly. Law and order in these states are a big joke. They were abducted by some men from the village. Their bodies were found hanging from a tree in an orchard the next day. After too much pressure from media, police arrested the fifth accused in the gang-rape case. All five accused who had been identified are now under arrest. Two are yet to be identified. We have fast track courts in India but they are just for the namesake. Speedy trials are one of the biggest challenges here. Two policemen are among the five arrested accused. They have been arrested for not acting soon enough on the complaint by the girls’ family; police will also probe their alleged role in the horrific act.

Even after so much chaos, Akhilesh Yadav made just a controversial statement, but is yet to solace the victims’ family. Only one leader, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, visited Badaun to meet the family members of the two girls. The family has said compensation is not enough, they need justice. The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to refer the investigation to the CBI. The state government has also promised to set up a fast track court to punish the culprits. The family alleges that when they approached the local police for help, they refused to register a first information report, or a FIR, for hours. A case of rape and murder was reportedly registered only after angry villagers protested against the alleged police apathy. The family has demanded an independent inquiry into the case, alleging that they have little hope of justice from the Akhilesh Yadav-led state government since the accused belong to the same community as the chief minister. Though, the villagers claim to have lost faith in the UP police and the state government completely; they are determined to continue their fight for justice.

Nirbhaya, a Delhi gang rape victim is yet to get justice. Rape cases are on the rise but none of the cases have punished the culprits. Let it be Delhi, UP, MP or West Bengal, the rape cases are on rise. Recently, Mamata was in news following her claims of CPI(M) strategising to kill her, CPI(M) behind the rapes in West Bengal. She has a valid point, however alleging CPI(M) behind everything may or may not be true. On the other hand, Marxists had a greater chance of proving their abilities in actually ‘developing’ a state rather than just ruling the state. Woman safety has been an issue in our country since the beginning of Mughal era, not just in 19th or 20th century but the safety of women has always been under question in this country. India had great woman rulers who ruled their kingdom with their wisdom without any complaints from the citizens under their reign.

At some point, I will blame the internet to have provoked men with ideas to storm up the assault. What Mamata Banerjee said might be correct that, people who talk a lot about rape are somewhere associated with pornography. She also pointed that ’eminent’ people who dress up and appear on talk shows are somewhere related to pornography. Well, that would not be the right statement but what I understand, she means to condemn the discussion of rapes and gangrapes on talk shows. By discussin, gangrapes and rapes on national television, they will encourage people and the channel operators will get TRPs. She said, it is not a talk show, it is money show! Somewhere, she was right. She also mentioned that people are talking freely about the unfortunate event because they are owned by CPM. They are insulting mothers, sisters and brothers of the state.

Many political leaders fail to find the reason why rapes are occurring, no one understands about the girl’s life and her dignity. With great faith people elected Modi and BJP government to power. Let us see, how this new ruling party at the centre deals with rape cases and safeguards the interest of woman in this country.
