We finally have a conviction as eight accused including Chota Rajan has been found guilty in the murder of Mid Day’s crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey who was gunned down in June 2011. Journalism is a thankless job and J Dey had to pay a heavy price for his life for his investigative reporting which is a professional hazard for crime reporters. Journalists are the watchdog of the society and the government needs to give protection to journos covering sensitive issues. A pen is mightier than the sword and justice has been done to J Dey’s family as those who silenced their loved one have now been found guilty and would be punished by the law of the land.
The void created by J Dey’s death would never be filled and the government should initiate an award in the memory of Jyotirmoy Dey which could be given to a budding journalist to keep the legacy of the departed soul ‘alive’ for years to come. Stringent punishment should be given to those who silence journalist to deter people committing such crimes in future!
