Sharad Pawar's NCP Faces Exodus: 8 MPs Poised to Join Ajit Pawar's Camp 2

In a dramatic political shift, at least eight Members of Parliament from the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are reportedly on the verge of defecting to Ajit Pawar’s faction. Sources indicate that these MPs are in advanced talks with Ajit Pawar’s camp and are likely to make their move soon. This development marks a significant blow to Sharad Pawar’s leadership, as Ajit Pawar’s faction, recognised by the Election Commission of India (ECI) as the “real” NCP, has already gained control of the party’s name and poll symbol.

The defection is being seen as a major setback for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance in Maharashtra and the opposition’s INDIA bloc. It follows Ajit Pawar’s faction and the ruling Mahayuti alliance’s sweeping victory in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections, further consolidating their influence.

The NCP split dates back to July 2023, when Ajit Pawar, along with other key leaders, broke away from Sharad Pawar’s camp to join the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance government. Since then, speculation has been rife about Sharad Pawar’s next political moves, with some sources hinting at the possibility of his own alignment with the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.

This looming defection could redefine Maharashtra’s political landscape, further tilting power dynamics in favor of Ajit Pawar’s camp while leaving Sharad Pawar grappling with dwindling support.

Bombay High Court: ‘Following a Girl Once Is Not Stalking’ Sparks Debate

The Bombay High Court has made pivotal clarification on what constitutes stalking under Indian law. On December 5, 2024, the court ruled that following a girl on a single occasion does not amount to stalking under Section 354-D of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This ruling was issued while hearing appeals in a case involving two men accused of stalking a 14-year-old girl.

Justice Govind Sanap underscored that for stalking to be established, evidence of repeated or persistent behaviour targeting the victim is essential. A one-time incident of following, the court stated, falls short of the legal criteria for stalking. The judgement clarified that the prosecution must prove consistent acts of following, watching, or contacting the victim, whether directly or digitally.

In this case, the accused faced multiple charges, including sexual assault and harassment. While one was acquitted of stalking-related charges, the other was convicted of sexual assault and received a reduced sentence based on credible evidence of entering the victim’s home and assaulting her.

This landmark ruling has sparked discussions about the nuances of stalking laws in India. By emphasising the need for persistent and threatening behaviour to constitute stalking, the court aims to refine the legal understanding of the offence while ensuring that justice is delivered appropriately in sensitive cases.

Naxals Strike Again: 8 Jawans, Civilian Driver Killed in Deadly IED Blast in Bijapur 5

In a chilling reminder of the Naxal menace, eight jawans of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and a civilian driver lost their lives when Naxals detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Monday, officials confirmed.

The attack occurred near Ambeli village under the Kutru police station jurisdiction, as the security personnel were returning in a Scorpio vehicle after completing an anti-Naxalite operation, said Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P.

The DRG, a specialized unit of the state police, bore the brunt of this calculated strike, marking the deadliest Naxal assault on security forces in two years.

“This is a significant loss, and it underlines the continuing threat posed by Naxals,” an official stated, drawing parallels to the April 26, 2023, attack in neighboring Dantewada district, where ten police personnel and a civilian driver were killed in a similar IED blast targeting a convoy.

As the nation mourns the fallen heroes, questions are being raised about the effectiveness of counter-insurgency measures in the red corridor. The incident has once again put the spotlight on the relentless Naxal threat and the challenges faced by security forces operating in these hostile regions.

Beed Sarpanch Murder Sparks Political Storm: Leaders Meet Governor, Call for Dhananjay Munde's Ouster 7

In the wake of the brutal murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, a delegation of leaders met Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan on Monday, demanding the removal of state minister Dhananjay Munde from the cabinet. The delegation, including BJP MLA Suresh Dhas, submitted a memorandum urging swift action to ensure a fair investigation and restore public trust in the justice system.

Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was abducted, tortured, and murdered on December 9, allegedly for opposing extortion attempts by a group targeting an energy company. Seven individuals have been arrested so far, including Walmik Karad, an associate of NCP leader and minister Dhananjay Munde.

The leaders demanded Munde’s resignation, the filing of murder charges against Karad, disciplinary action against negligent police officials, and stricter measures to curb extortion and hooliganism in the region.

The memorandum alleged that extortion activities had surged during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, culminating in Deshmukh’s murder. It cited a series of incidents, including the kidnapping of an Avaada Power Pvt Ltd officer in May, a case resolved only after timely intervention by the Ahilyanagar police. The Beed police were criticized for their inaction despite repeated threats issued by Karad to Avaada officials, demanding ₹2 crore.

On December 6, Karad’s associates allegedly attacked security personnel at the company’s Massajog storeyard. Three days later, Deshmukh was abducted, tortured, and murdered, with a gruesome video of the crime circulated to intimidate others. His body was found in a nearby village.

Public outrage followed, with Massajog residents staging protests demanding arrests. Police acted only after significant public pressure, the leaders claimed. On December 31, Karad announced his surrender via social media, drawing crowds to the CID headquarters in Pune, which caused chaos.

The memorandum also raised concerns over alleged preferential treatment extended to Karad and the influence of powerful figures on the investigation. Signatories included prominent leaders such as former MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, NCP (SP) MP Bajarang Sonawane, Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar, and MLA Jitendra Awhad.

As the case gains momentum, calls for accountability and justice have cast a shadow over the political landscape of Maharashtra.

Showdown in Tamil Nadu Assembly: Governor RN Ravi Walks Out Over 'Disrespect' to National Anthem 9

In an unprecedented move, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi stormed out of the Assembly on Monday, refusing to deliver his customary address, citing alleged “disrespect” to the Constitution and the national anthem.

Tensions erupted when members of the opposition AIADMK gathered in protest, chanting slogans that drowned out proceedings. Speaker M. Appavu ordered their eviction, while Congress legislators also staged a symbolic dissent, wearing black badges. BJP and PMK members exited the House in solidarity with the Governor.

Raj Bhavan later issued a strongly worded statement accusing the Assembly of ignoring a fundamental constitutional duty. The controversy centered on the omission of the national anthem at the start of proceedings, with only the Tamil state song, “Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu,” being sung.

Governor Ravi reportedly urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Speaker Appavu, and other leaders to ensure the anthem was played but left in “deep anguish” after they allegedly refused.

Senior Minister and Leader of the House Duraimurugan dismissed the Governor’s claims, stating that the Assembly has long followed a protocol of playing the national anthem at the conclusion of the Governor’s address, a practice reaffirmed during a similar dispute last year.

“This raises questions about the Governor’s intentions,” Duraimurugan remarked, asserting that Tamil Nadu has consistently demonstrated unwavering respect for the Constitution, national anthem, and patriotism.

The incident has sparked a heated debate, highlighting the growing tensions between the Governor and the state government.

Chhattisgarh Journalist Murder: Prime Accused Contractor Suresh Chandrakar Arrested in Hyderabad 15

Suresh Chandrakar, the main accused in the chilling murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, has been apprehended by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Hyderabad, police confirmed on Monday.

Chandrakar, a contractor by profession, had been on the run since January 3, when Mukesh’s body was discovered in a septic tank at a property owned by the accused in Chattanpara Basti, Bijapur. Mukesh, a 33-year-old freelance journalist, went missing on January 1.

The SIT’s late-night operation on Sunday led to Chandrakar’s arrest, adding to the detentions of his brothers, Ritesh and Dinesh Chandrakar, as well as supervisor Mahendra Ramteke, who were earlier taken into custody.

Mukesh’s murder is speculated to be linked to his recent report exposing alleged corruption in a road construction project in Bijapur. The report, aired on NDTV on December 25, had directly implicated contractor Suresh Chandrakar in the controversy.

Political accusations have further intensified the case. While Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma claimed Chandrakar was affiliated with the Congress, the opposition alleged he recently joined the ruling BJP, fueling a heated political debate over the incident.

The arrest of Suresh Chandrakar is expected to shed light on the motive and circumstances surrounding the journalist’s gruesome murder, as calls for justice continue to echo across the region.

Prashant Kishor Arrested Amid BPSC Exam Controversy, Sparks Political Storm in Bihar 17

Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor was arrested early Monday while on a hunger strike at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, demanding the cancellation of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) exam held on December 13. Kishor, along with his supporters, was removed by the police and taken to Patna AIIMS for a medical check-up, according to his team.

Patna District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh confirmed the arrest, stating, “Kishor and his supporters were arrested for holding an illegal dharna near a restricted site. They will be produced before a court.” The sit-in near the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Gandhi Maidan was deemed unauthorized, prompting police action.

Kishor launched his hunger strike on January 2, supporting civil service aspirants calling for the cancellation of the BPSC exam, which had been marred by allegations of a question paper leak. In response to the controversy, BPSC conducted a retest on January 4 for a select group of candidates, which reportedly proceeded without any irregularities.

Of the 12,012 eligible candidates, 8,111 downloaded their admit cards for the re-exam, while 5,943 appeared at 22 centers. BPSC declared the retest peaceful and free of malpractice, further dismissing demands for a broader cancellation.

Kishor’s arrest has added fuel to the ongoing debate, with critics questioning the government’s handling of the exam controversy and its approach to dissent. The incident underscores the growing tensions in Bihar’s political landscape over issues of accountability and transparency in public examinations.

Kejriwal Promises to Waive ‘Inflated’ Water Bills if AAP Returns to Power in Delhi 19

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday promised to waive the “inflated” water bills received by people in Delhi if his party returns to power in the upcoming assembly polls in the national capital next month.

In a press conference, Kejriwal said that people were “distressed” due to water bills worth thousands and lakhs of rupees being sent to them by the Delhi Jal Board.

He alleged that the inflated water bills started arriving after he went to jail and urged people not to pay those bills.

“I have said this earlier, but today I am making a formal announcement: when AAP comes back to power after the assembly polls, these inflated bills will be waived. Those who think their bills are incorrect need not pay them,” the former Delhi chief minister said.

The AAP government provides free 20,000 liters of water per month and over 12 lakh households in the city have benefitted from the scheme, he added.

The AAP is seeking to return to power for the fourth consecutive term after the elections to the 70-member Delhi Assembly next month.
