16-year-old Aryaan become first Indian tennis player to flunk dope test

AryaanAryaan Bhatia became the first Indian tennis player to fail dope test and has been put under provisional suspension, the National Anti-Doping Agency said on Friday.

16-year-old Bhatia’s urine sample was taken during the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship held here in October last year. The NADA had collected samples for the first time from tennis players during the championship.

The national doping watchdog also provisionally suspended seven other sportspersons last month for flunking dope tests. They are Sandeep Kaur (powerlifting), Ankit Gosai (handball), Jithu Thomas (volleyball), Yaiphaba (canoeing), Vishan Singh (kayaking and canoeing) and Shivam Kasana (cycling).

Middle distance runner Monika Chaudhary, who had moved Delhi High Court to secure a trial ahead of last year’s Asian Games and later tested positive for Erythropoietin (EPO), has been handed a four-year ban by the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP).

The ADDP also handed four year bans to hockey player Bharat Singh and hammer thrower Ginjan Singh.

The ban period of decathlete Jagtar Singh, who tested positive for Meldonium during the Federation Cup Athletics Championships in 2017, has been reduced from four years to two years by the Anti-Doping Appeal Panel (ADAP).

The NADA also said that it has conducted 675 dope tests, including 57 blood samples, in the last month.

Rahul recalled, Karthik dropped, Markande new face for Australia engagements

K L RahulBatsman K L Rahul was Friday recalled for the ODI and T20 home series against Australia but the selectors dropped Dinesh Karthik while picking rookie leg-spinner Mayank Markande as the new face.

India will play two T20 Internationals and five ODIs, starting February 24, in what will be their last international assignment before the World Cup, which begins in England on May 30.

Rahul fought his way back after a couple of good innings for India A against England Lions in the two unofficial Tests, which concluded hours before the national selection committee met here.

Battling indifferent form in Australia, the opener was called back after the unsavoury comments on women in a TV talk show, following which he was asked to regain his form by concentrating on domestic cricket.

The 21-year-old Markande was rewarded soon after his five-wicket haul, which powered India A to an innings and 68-run victory over England Lions in the second unofficial Test.

He has also been a part of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians.

The omission of Karthik is an indicator as to who among Rishabh Pant and the Tamil Nadu player will board the Heathrow-bound flight as a specialist-batsman-cum-second-wicketkeeper for the World Cup.

Pant has found a place in both the squads.

omar abdullah

Asserting that Kashmiri people living in other states could be soft targets in a surcharged atmosphere, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Friday asked Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to direct all state governments to ensure their safety.

“My earnest appeal to @rajnathsingh ji to please issue directions to all state governments to take special care in areas/colleges/institutions where Kashmiris are residing/studying. They are soft targets in a surcharged atmosphere,” Abdullah tweeted.

He also asked people to unite against terror and maintain peace.

“Kashmiris/Muslims in Jammu didn’t attack our CRPF jawans yesterday (Thursday), terrorists did. This violence is a convenient tool by some to shift the blame. Let’s unite against terror, let’s not allow terror to divide us,” Abdullah said.

His remarks came after curfew was imposed in Jammu as a precautionary measure following massive protests and stray incidents of violence over the terror attack in Kashmir’s Pulwama on Thursday that killed 40 CRPF personnel.

Meanwhile, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said miscreants in Jammu were trying to take advantage of the situation by inciting tension.

She said the need of the hour is to show compassion and come together.

The Supreme Court on Friday expressed unhappiness over some lawyers filing defective petitions and seeking wide publicity in the media while referring to review pleas challenging its verdict in the Rafale case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said lawyers file petitions in the apex court registry and instead of removing the defects of the pleas, they go to media for wide publicity.

“The other side is not so innocent…The petitioners go to media and claim wide publicity,” the bench of Chief Justice Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna said while referring to defective review petitions filed challenging its verdict in the Rafale case.

The apex court’s observation came when it was hearing lawyers mentioning cases for urgent listing and hearing.

The CJI has asked the registrar (judicial) of the apex court to come and witness the mentioning proceedings so that the registry officials can get their act right and work more efficiently.

Earlier, the apex court had on December 14 dismissed a batch of pleas challenging the deal between India and France for procurement of 36 Rafale jets, saying there was no occasion to “really doubt the decision making the process” warranting setting aside of the contract.

The apex court had rejected the pleas seeking lodging of an FIR and a court-monitored probe into alleged irregularities in the Rs 58,000-crore deal, in which both the countries have entered into an inter-governmental agreement (IGA).

Ashwani Lohani takes charge as Air India CMD

ASHWANI LOHAN

Retired technocrat Ashwani Lohani took charge as the chairman and managing director (CMD) of Air India on Friday.

He took the charge in presence of recently appointed Civil Aviation Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola and senior officials of the national carrier.

This is Lohani’s second tenure as Air India chief.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on February 13 cleared Lohani’s re-induction on a contract basis for a one-year tenure.

Lohani is a 1980-batch IRSME (Indian Railway Service Mechanical Engineering) officer hailing from Madhya Pradesh.

He had headed the national carrier from August 2017 to September 2017 before being moved to the Railway Board as the chairman, from where he retired in December, 2018.

It was during his tenure that Air India made its first operating profit of Rs 105 crore in the 2017 financial year, since the merger of Indian Airlines and Air India in 2007.

Kharola was the chief of Air India till February 6, when he was transferred to the position of civil aviation secretary.

Linking Aadhaar-PAN is mandatory for tax filers; to be completed by Mar 31: CBDT

aadhar

The CBDT has stressed that Aadhaar-PAN linking is “mandatory” for those filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) and this procedure has to be “completed” by March 31 this year. “Constitutional validity of Aadhaar has been upheld by the Supreme Court of India in September, 2018. Consequently, in terms of Section 139AA of Income Tax Act, 1961 and order dated June 30, 2018, of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, Aadhaar-PAN linking is mandatory now which has to be completed till March 31, 2019 by PAN holders requiring filing of ITR,” the CBDT said in an advisory on Thursday.

The Supreme Court on February 6 had confirmed that linkage of PAN with Aadhaar is mandatory for filing of ITRs.

This reiteration of the September order of the apex court came on an appeal filed by the Centre against a Delhi High Court order allowing two persons, to file their ITRs for 2018-19 without linking their Aadhaar and PAN numbers.

A bench comprising Justices A K Sikri and S Abdul Nazeer said the top court has already decided the matter and upheld the section 139AA of the Income Tax Act.

The apex court on September 26 last year had declared the Centre’s flagship Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid but struck down some of its provisions including its linking with bank accounts, mobile phones and school admissions.

Former CBDT Chairman Sushil Chandra, early this month at an event, had said that just 23 crore PAN card holders — over half of the total PAN card holders — have so far linked their cards with biometric ID Aadhaar.

He had said the I-T Department has so far issued 42 crore permanent account numbers (PAN), of which 23 crore have been linked with Aadhaar.

After seven women recently accused singer-songwriter Ryan Adams of harassment and emotional abuse, model-musician Karen Elson has also come forward regarding her “traumatising experience” with the singer.

This comes one day after   published a story in which Adams’ ex-wife Mandy Moore and six other women accused him of being controlling and obsessive.

The 40-year-old model took to her Instagram account on Thursday to share her experience.

She began by saying, “I also had a traumatizing experience with Ryan Adams.”

“While I’m not quite brave enough yet to speak about my specifics. I’m encouraged that many women have bonded and helped each other heal. This is the power of sisterhood and I’m very grateful for these women,” she added.

“I hope all those speaking out are given the grace and dignity they deserve. The trauma that lingers is often a very powerful silencer of women as is the business that enables these men to thrive without ever facing consequences,” she said.

She captioned her post, writing, “Not every woman is comfortable sharing her story. We must respect that! These matters are complicated and are hard to dissect, express and even understand. We blame ourselves and we shame ourselves. While I don’t want to share my specific experience, reading The NY Times story is profoundly healing.”

Moore shared a screenshot of Elson’s message on her own Instagram Story, writing, “I love you so much and commend your bravery, @misskarenelson.”

Elson joined Adams on a few tours during the summer of 2017, serving as an opening act.

Adams has denied all the allegations made against him in the Times story but is yet to respond to Elson publicly.

Shortly after the story was first published on Wednesday, Elson shared that she was “deeply disturbed by the allegations,” but did not make any reference to her own history with Adams.

“I support all the women who are coming forward to share their experiences of trauma and abuse. These women are tremendously courageous and are advocates on behalf of all women. Please be kind to them! #MeToo and #TimesUp,” she wrote in her Instagram story.

In a series of tweets posted after the Times story was released, Adams apologised for his past “mistakes,” while also claiming that the article “is upsettingly inaccurate.”

Adams’ lawyer Andrew B. Brettler has also denied all the claims made against his client to the Times.
