The CBI has registered five cases against employees of HAL Engine Division at Koraput, Odisha for allegedly causing a loss of Rs 13.28 crore to the public sector undertaking, officials said on Wednesday.

It is alleged that Bhaben Mitra, Senior Manager Finance, in conspiracy with other employees misappropriated amounts by committing forgery of documents, siphoning off Rs 13.28 crore from the coffers of the cash-strapped PSU during 2013-17.

The alleged cheating which started with Rs 13.11 lakh in 2013 touched a new height during 2017 when Rs 7.78 crore was siphoned off from the company using fake bills, they said.

The agency registered five FIRs against Mitra and other employees of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Koraput on Tuesday.

In October last year too, the agency had booked Mitra for alleged embezzlement of Rs 5 crore during January-August, 2018 by submitting fake bills, work orders and invoices.

The agency had carried out searches during which it found incriminating documents substantiating that the alleged fraud was going on for long in the government-run institute.

The HAL Vigilance Department had on Tuesday sent five complaints related to frauds committed from 2013 to 2017, they said.

Based on these complaints, the agency has registered fresh cases against Mitra, other staff members and private persons allegedly involved in the scam.

AP CM Chandrababu Naidu calls for protests on budget day; says Centre ‘cheated’ state

chandrababu naidu @ncbnAndhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said that February 1, the day the central government will present the budget in Parliament, will be a “black day” for the state, and called for protests.

In his daily teleconference with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders, Naidu said the Centre had cheated the state in the last five budgets. “February 1 is a black day for the state. The BJP-led government at the Centre has discriminated against the state at every step. Unless the BJP is trounced at the hustings, justice will not be done to Andhra Pradesh (AP),” the Chief Minister said. He asked his party cadre to observe peaceful protests by sporting black badges and showing black flags when the Centre presents the budget for 2019-20.

Referring to reports in China Global Times, a newspaper in China, Naidu said that the failures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government were being publicised even in China. “The country has been pushed into chaos under Modi’s rule. There is widespread antagonism towards Modi due to unemployment. People are opposing the BJP,” he said. The Andhra chief minister alleged discrimination against the state with regard to the central government releasing funds on Tuesday to various states through the National Disaster Relief Fund.

“Maharashtra has been given Rs 4,717 crore while AP got only Rs 900 crore for drought relief. Andhra suffered extensive damage running into thousands of crores of rupees due to cyclone Titli. Cyclone Phethai also caused severe destruction, but the Centre did not grant even a rupee,” Naidu lamented.

Aircel-Maxis case: SC asks Karti to deposit Rs 10 crore for permitting him to travel abroad

Karti Chidambaram

The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, to travel abroad after depositing Rs 10 crore with its registry.

The apex court asked Karti to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on March 5, 6, 7 and 12 for questioning in connection with the INX Media and Aircel Maxis cases, saying “don’t play around with the law”.

“You go wherever you want to go, between February 10 to 26 but you must cooperate with the investigation,” a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said.

“Please tell your clients that he will have to cooperate. You have not cooperated. We wanted to say a lot of things. We are not saying them right now,” the bench said.

Besides asking Karti to deposit Rs 10 crore with the secretary general of the Supreme Court, the bench also asked him to file an undertaking that he would return and cooperate with the investigation.

Karti has sought permission to travel abroad from February 10 to 26 and again from March 23 to 31.

The bench was hearing Karti’s plea seeking permission to travel to France, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom for the next few months for international tennis tournaments organised by a company called ‘Totus Tennis Ltd’ having its registered office in the UK.

Police ki Gundagardi

police ki gundagardi

In the last three decades or so, different types of cases have been reported in newspapers which indicate the criminalisation of police. This is found in three forms:

  1. Policemen committing crimes themselves
  2. Policemen helping criminals in committing crimes and getting a share out of it
  3. Policemen resigning from the department and joining the militant groups engaged in killing, looting and abduction

In these three types, we have not included police corruption which by itself is a serious crime.

Robberies, extortion, kidnapping for ransom, and rapes of innocent women are some of the crimes allegedly committed by the men in uniform.

In June 1993, a constable of Delhi Armed Police allegedly kidnapped and raped a 16-year-old girl. A head constable and two constables were arrested in one state in July 1994 for allegedly extracting Rs 40,000 from two youths after threatening to involve them in narcotic offences.

In March 1996, two police constables in one city stopped an auto-rickshaw passenger, threatened him and took Rs 4,000 from the complainant.

Most of the traffic policemen in Mumbai and elsewhere in the country too keep fining people for no fault of theirs just to achieve their target. When I complained about the harassment motorists face at the hands of our traffic policemen, the traffic department did nothing to help me out. Instead, I was abused in filthy Marathi words.

One traffic policeman even snatched away my mobile phone while I was recording the gaalis he gave to a motorist and didn’t give it back to me.

Sudip Dalvi, a member of the Musical Warriors and Save Tiracol Movement was badly beaten up by the Goa police on November 7, 2015, when he demanded a probe into the mysterious death of Fr. Bismarque Dias whose body was found floating in the Mandovi River. In Sudip Dalvi’s own words: “A police officer punched me and shoved me into the police van when I insisted a probe into Fr. Bismarque’s mysterious death. The police officer then banged my head against the iron grill of the window of the van.”

In another incident, the police mercilessly beat up a young girl of around 21 years of age on September 27, 2015 at the pandal of Lalbaugcha Raja in Parel, Mumbai just because she was trying to make her way through the huge crowd of people in order to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha.

In yet another incident in the month of October 2015, a couple was picked up and badly beaten by the cops at the Andheri Police Station just because they were fully drunk and creating a ruckus on the road. The cops at the Dombivili (a far-off suburb in Mumbai) are no less. They accept money for solving cases.

There are several instances of policemen raping complainants in police stations and no action is being taken against them.

These are some of the crimes reported in newspapers and on television from time to time. A close scrutiny of the cases clearly indicates that in a large number of cases, it is the constables and head constables who are involved in crimes. Unless exemplary punishment is given to such undesirable elements, the image of the men in uniform is bound to sink low.

Criminalisation or ‘khaki-coat crime’ is thus getting widespread in the police. Just because the police have got the powers, they feel they can do what they want with the public. The Police Commissioner is no less. He does nothing to help the poor citizens of the country and only trusts his men in uniform, who according to him are ‘saints’.

Following ideals of Nanaji Deshmukh needed

Great social activist Chandikadas Amritrao Deshmukh (Nanaji Deshmukh) who devoted big last part of life and dedicated social service in remote tribal areas definitely deserved greatest national honour of Bharat Ratna. But the need of the hour is to adopt ideal principles advocated by him. He declined post of Union Cabinet Minister in Morarji Desai government after the emergency era of 1975-77 only on the ground that he advocated the principle to stay away from politics after the age of 60 years. But now politicians even at the age of 80s or 90s kept glued to legislative posts with someones dreaming to be the Prime Minister even at such a high age.

In the present era too, many aspirants in the opposition dream for the post of the Prime Minister, only present BJP government at the centre can and are doing massive poll reforms through an ordinance to be implemented in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections coming to be in the next few months. One of the reform can be a tribute to great Nanaji Deshmukh by imposing an upper age limit to remain in the legislature after which members of Lok Sabha or state assemblies may be auto-terminated. However such an upper age limit may not be there for members of Rajya Sabha to meet emergency demand to make experienced person Prime Minister.

However, absolute useless Legislative Councils in states set up just for political employment of favourites of political heavyweights may be abolished through an ordinance to be ratified by a Constitutional amendment later. These Upper Houses in states were abolished in many states after 1977 with just five states retaining Vidhan Parishads. But later, many more states added these White Elephants on public exchequers funded by hard-earned money of taxpayers.

Diversion of company funds for personal gains destroyed many industries!

Diversion of company funds by promoters for personal gains has destroyed many sunrise industries in our country and Sun Pharma is the latest to join the bandwagon. Corporate governance is a major issue in India’s corporate world where you can get away with any malpractices by greasing palms of bureaucrats who are responsible for safeguarding the law which is the reason why we witness scams and frauds at regular intervals.

Business ethics are the key to the success of any organisation. Our country needs the highest corporate governance for the growth and progress of our economy. We must have stringent laws for our corporate world which give stringent punishment for those who divert company funds as well as commit scams and frauds. SEBI is a toothless body and it needs more powers to monitor frauds and scams apart from manpower to monitor the growing world of corporate listings in our country. Also, Dilip Sanghvi who is on RBI board should resign from the apex body till all irregularities are cleared against his name!

Anna begins hunger strike over Lokpal, says Govt failed to meet assurances

anna

Social activist Anna Hazare has begun a hunger strike from Wednesday over “non-fulfilment” of assurances by the Centre and the Maharashtra government on the appointment of Lokpal and passage of the Lokayukta Act in the state.

Hazare offered prayers at the Padmavati Temple in his village Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra in the morning. He then went in a procession, accompanied by students, youths and farmers, to the Yadavbaba Temple and sat near it to begin his hunger strike.

The anti-corruption crusader told news agencies that he welcomed the Maharashtra Cabinet’s decision to bring the office of state chief minister under the jurisdiction of Lokayukta.

“However, the strike will continue till the government fulfils promises they made before coming to power about passage of Lokayukta Act, appointment of Lokpal and to tackle farmers’ issues,” he said.

As a routine procedure, doctors conducted a basic health check-up of Hazare, a close aide of the activist said.

“Hazare has now begun his fast as he is disappointed with the state government for not appointing the Lokayukta,” the aide said.

Hazare had written a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday, saying he would launch the agitation in his village from Wednesday.

Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan, who has been acting as an emissary between the government and Hazare, on Tuesday urged the activist to cancel the agitation, claiming that almost all the demands made by him were fulfilled.

“His first demand was implementing Swaminathan Commission recommendations, that farmers should get 1.5 times MSP. I think that demand has been fulfilled,” Mahajan had told reporters in Mumbai.

Hazare, however, said that he would not call off the agitation till the Lokayukta Act becomes a reality.

Apart from the appointment of Lokpal at the national level and Lokayukta in states, Hazare has been demanding implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations and some electoral reforms.

“It has been five years since the Lokpal Act was passed. Yet the Narendra Modi government has not appointed Lokpal…Lokayukta Act has not been passed in Maharashtra for four years,” Hazare observed in his letter dated January 28.

The activist said the chief minister had mediated when he had launched the agitation at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi in March last year. Hazare said he had withdrawn that agitation after the central government had assured in writing that it would fulfil the demands.

“Nine months have passed, yet the demands have not been fulfilled. Hence, I will be on hunger strike in my village Ralegan Siddhi on January 30,” he had said in the letter.

The Fadnavis Cabinet had on Tuesday decided to bring the office of chief minister under the jurisdiction of Lokayukta.

Hazare had welcomed the government’s decision to set rolling the process to appoint Lokayukta.

“I thank them on behalf of the people for taking the decision towards appointment of Lokayukta through a constitutional process. But, that does not mean I will not stage hunger strike. The agitation will go on until the Act is in place,” he had said.

Why I can’t celebrate Independence or Republic Day

india 2Since the origins of humans onto this earth, the humans have been evolving in as many ways as they can. Humans evolved socially, culturally, architecturally, psychologically, and technologically as well. Humans have been inventing everything which comes their way to satisfy themselves and fulfil all aspects of their needs throughout those inventions. The humans invented homes, communities, villages, cities, states, countries, borders, rituals, cultures, traditions, creeds, castes and religions to live in a well and separated way, without disturbing anyone. Humans invented clothes to save themselves from cold and heat, food to keep them healthy, signs, symbols, languages, relations, and emotions to do communication, and most importantly the education to have a safe, organised and humanly lives, to be human and humane and to understand the true nature of nature, humans and its existence. However, the saddest part is that, whatever the humans have been inventing for the last millions of years for the bitterness of humanity has been going opposite to it. Either be it casteism, religion, regionalism, nationalism and others rest of the factors, all these have been dividing humans whereas the prime motto of all these are to unite us and we the one to blame as we couldn’t have understood the actual nature of nature, humans and humanity till now.

Independence Day means the day of freedom. That day when we got freedom from the British but if we look and observe it in reality then we find that we got freedom from the Britishers only who were white, apart from that nothing is changed. We are still slaves, slaves of religionism, casteism, regionalism, exploitation, scams, unemployment, of useless educational institutions and their third class plans, useless health institutions, hospitalities and their senseless plans, stupid leaders and their idiotic policies, discrimination between blacks and whites, rich and poor, male and female, son and daughter, of idiots being intellectuals and intellectuals being idiots, and the most dangerous and undying inhumanism which is the contractor of the all evils. We are slaves of all these evils and to get freedom from these all is actual freedom. When we get freedom from all these evils I am sure that day I will celebrate these day with people without knowing their background in any manner. However, the truth is, we are not free now in any sense therefore I can’t think of celebrating this destruction in the name of freedom.

Emotion: whether love, fear, suffering, hate and the others all emotions are the only things that are neither manipulated nor it can be. It is the truest nature of human being. They can’t lie to their emotions and this is the only human’s activity that connects people to people, no matter what religion, culture, community or country they belong to and that could be the enough reason that many critique and artists have said that ‘art is a universal language that is understood by everyone and connects the worlds altogether’. Therefore to be emotional, to be sensitive towards each other is the only solution which can bring harmony, peace, love, compassion and humanism between us. Eventually, it’s the love and the sensitivity that we are made up of but lost it over the time but again the fact is that, it can be achieved again and for that, we just have to go some steps ahead first.

I can’t celebrate these days/occasions simply because we are not in the state to do so. Things are turning worst to extreme worst; humans are killing humans to save humanity and are giving the name of social justice to all these killings. We are damaging the whole system, the inner and the outer system as well. Inner in a sense that we have stored and are storing hate and rage continuously which is destroying the inner self or the inner system, and once the inner is damaged it’s going to damage the outer system. We all know and understand it very well that we are the content of our brain. We are garbage when the content of our brain is garbage, we are hatred, anger and negative energy when the content of the brain is hate, anger, jealousy, competition, at the same time, we are love, compassion, sensitive, positive, delicate, warming, brotherly and above all a human being when the content of our brain is love, positivity, compassion, togetherness, harmony, sharing and caring. It means to change ourselves, we first have to change the content of our brain and to change the content of our brain we have to change the way we look at things and the way lead our life, for that matter we have to go through a process, a process of self-realisation, self-observation, self-analysis without being influenced by any of our pasts or the futures, without being influenced by our relationships, emotions, likes or dislikes. We will have to go through it as raw and as ruthlessly as a month’s hunger tiger goes through his prey, as ruthlessly as a group of wild dogs go through their prey… (You can search on Youtube of wild dogs attack). This is the only way through which we can first understand ourselves in an actual sense, and once we understand what and who we are the then from that very moment we become aware of ourselves, and the moment we become aware of ourselves internally we become aware of ourselves externally too, then from this very moment we start changing ourselves. So first we have to understand ourselves and then to change it first internally, once we are changed internally the external changes happened at the very moment by default. To understand this, we can look at this loop of incidents that leads to one another…… Subject —  look, watch, observe — analyse — plan — action — result. This is the process of every action to result. To change is to change ourselves. And believe me it’s very easy we just have to be a little alert of ourselves of our every thought mainly, because it’s the thought that changes into action and it’s the action which changes into result. And the result may be good, bad or worse depending on the action. Thought is internal and action is external. So to control internal/thought is to control external/result. And if something beautiful happens internally/in thoughtfulness then the external/result would by default be beautiful. It’s all about managing oneself. When one manages oneself the world can be managed later very easily completely and beautifully. Changing oneself is to changing the world without changing yourself you can’t change the world.

Without any doubt, I have a great respect and highest regard for all those people who in some the other way contributed to the nation in its worst time. However, for now all I can hope is for a better time, a time when we: the humans will be united on the name and on the basis of humans and will make this world a better place for everyone irrespective of their castes, creeds, religion, region or any factors other than living beings. And most importantly when I say nation, I don’t mean a state or a country by that but what I mean by that is the nation; this whole cosmic existence as a nation, which contains everything within without any discrimination. The cosmic existence as a nation of and for all living beings.

RIP George Fernandes

lead 29 1 19The veteran national leader, who was popularly known as the ‘uncrowned king’ of the then Bombay, George Fernandes was unwell and bedridden for the last few years, passed away on Tuesday morning in New Delhi. However, his first shot into national prominence was when he defeated Congress stalwart S K Patil in the 1967 parliamentary elections at the very beginning of his political career. Fernandes later earned a sobriquet of “George the Giant Killer”.

MNS State Secretary Pramod Patil stated, “George Fernandes changed the entire direction of the Indian Politics. Leaders of his caliber are very few in the political arena. He set an example about how one can lead a political life. No political leader can touch to his stature without any political background; he rose in politics and continued his life journey extraordinarily. He was the leader who was utterly concerned about social problems. He was an Institution in himself. As a staunch socialist, the work he did at grass root level was just astonishing and inspiration for next generations. He was the one who remained steadfast about his ideology amidst his opponents. As Mumbai was the epicentre of his political journey, he should be felicitated as ‘Maharashtra Bhushan’.”

Fernandes was a senior Janta Dal leader and one of the very prominent leaders of the socialist movement in 1970s before founding the Samata Party. At the time of the Defense Ministry, nuclear inspection was succeeded under the inspection of George. He was the one who passed the legislation where the government handovers the dead bodies of the Kargil martyrs to their respective house.

Socialist Leader Subodh More commented, “Fernandes emerged as a strong labour leader in the 60s and 70s who fought ardently for their welfare and rights. He was closely connected with general public across the nation and never limited himself to any geographical boundaries. He lived modestly  throughout his tenure as minister and wore simple khadi clothes. Fernandes was the only one who opposed the then RSS. He and Madhu Limaye were instrumental in the splitting of the Janta Party.”

George Fernandes was born on June 3, 1930, in Mangaluru. Even before entering into politics he had made his name as a powerful trade union leader and later, he finally became a member of Rajya Sabha from Bihar. He was a rare politician who lived with no greed of gatherings. During his first tenure as MP, Fernandes set up a Doordarshan Kendra, Kanti Thermal Power Station and the Lijjat papad factory to generate employment in Muzaffarpur. Fernandes also insisted on women empowerment. In November 2014, Kanti Thermal Power Station was renamed as George Fernandes Thermal Power Station (GFTPS). In condolence to striking personality, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “George Sahab represented the best of India’s political leadership. Frank and fearless, forthright and farsighted, he made a valuable contribution to our country. He was among the most effective voices for the rights of the poor and marginalised. Saddened by his passing away.”

George Fernandes became the hero of the Emergency. He was even jailed during the 1975 Emergency emposed by Indira Gandhi-led Congress government for what was dubbed as the “Baroda Dynamite Conspiracy” to blow up the government establishments and the railway tracks. He contested the 1977 election from jail and won the Muzaffarpur constituency in Bihar by a landslide. In a conversation with AV, President of Indian Federation of Working Journalist K Vikram Rao reminiscted his memories and asserted, “In July 1975, I met Fernandes in Baroda and later became good friends. Both of us opposed the emergency and discussed on what could be done to topple the autocratic Indira Gandhi Government.”

He further added, “After a point of time we started broadcasting news on radio and sharing articles, posters, pamphlets and used other forms of communication to awaken the citizens. During all these protests we decided to go underground and continued protesting against the emergency declared by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi. The greatest thing about Fernandes is that, he was a very fearless and purely socialist leader who invested his whole life for the betterment of the country and its citizens. He had influenced many aspiring leaders across the country.”

Apart from his active role in politics, Fernandes was interested in writing and journalism in his young age. He worked as the editor of a Konkani language monthly called Konkani Yuvak (Konkani Youth) in 1949, and in the same year, he was also the editor of the Raithavani weekly in Kannada. The Dockman in English that ceased publication had reappeared under the editorship of Fernandes between 1952-1953. He also served as the editor of an English monthly ‘The Other Side’, and the chairman on the editorial board of the Hindi monthly ‘Pratipaksh’.

Fernandes also authored some books on politics which include – What Ails the Socialist (1972), Socialist Communist Interaction in India, In the Year of Disabled: India’s Disabled Government (1981), Dignity for All: Essays on Socialism and Democracy (1991), and his autobiography titled George Fernandes Speaks (1991). Fernandes used to speak 10 languages—Konkani, English, Hindi, Tulu, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Malayalam, and Latin. Konkani was his mother tongue. He learnt Marathi and Urdu in jail and Latin while he was in the seminary in his early youth. He was extremely fluent in Hindi and English.

Fernandes had been a human rights activist, and the member of the Amnesty International, People’s Union for Civil Liberties, and the Press Council of India as well. One of the prominent acts he did was that he forced Coca Cola and IBM to exit the country as they refused to dilute their stake in their Indian associates. However, Coke left the country and returned after two decades.

Social Activist Sarita Naik stated, “The journey of George Fernandes had given great strength to the common people. He didn’t only become a leader of the labourer but also influenced the thought of the workers and had given a lesson to the common labourers to fight for their right. George fulfilled many great responsibilities by becoming a member of the Central Ministry. The death of George has caused a huge loss to the country. We will never be able to fulfill the void. He is not a human but an immortal idea that will always be amongst us through his incredible thought. The whole nation is paying homage to the great leader with a teary-eyed. We will always be indebted to him.”

While addressing the annual conference of ‘Karnataka Planters Association’ 15 years ago in Bengaluru, when he was the Defence Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet. Fernandes had described the Vietnamese as “disciplined, committed, and determined a lot, after that he even went ahead and confessed, “If there is a rebirth, I would like to be reborn as a Vietnamese.”

According to the reports, Fernandes’ last rites will be performed on January 30, in New Delhi after his son arrives in India from the United States.

Rest In Peace dear George Mathew Fernandes

A senior journalist of India, George Mathew Fernandes who was an Indian trade unionist, later on, joined politics to serve the nation. Fernandes was the editor of a Konkani language monthly “Konkani Yuvak” (Konkani Youth) in 1949. The same year, he was the editor of the Raithavani weekly in Kannada. The Dockman weekly in English, which had ceased publication, reappeared under the editorship of Fernandes in 1952–53. Fernandes has penned several books on politics such as What Ails the Socialists (1972), Socialist Communist Interaction in India, In the year of the disabled: India’s disabled government (1981), Dignity for All: Essays in Socialism and Democracy (1991), and his autobiography titled George Fernandes Speaks (1991). He was also the editor of an English monthly The Other Side, and served as the chairman on the editorial board of the Hindi monthly ‘Pratipaksh’ as well. A human rights activist, Fernandes has been a member of the Amnesty International, People’s Union for Civil Liberties, and the Press Council of India. He is extremely fluent in Hindi and English.

He was a key member of the Janata Dal and is the founder of the Samata Party who had held several ministerial portfolios which include communications, industry, railways, and defence. He was a rare politician who lived with no greed or gatherings. During his first tenure as MP, George Fernandes set up a Doordarshan Kendra, Kanti Thermal Power Station and the Lijjat papad factory to generate employment in Muzaffarpur. Fernandes also insisted on women’s empowerment. In November 2014, Kanti Thermal Power Station was renamed as George Fernandes Thermal Power Station (GFTPS).

In 1977, after the Emergency had been lifted, Fernandes won the Muzaffarpur seat in Bihar in absentia and was appointed as the Union Minister for Industries. During his tenure as Union minister, he ordered American multinationals IBM and Coca Cola to leave the country, due to their investment violations. He was the driving force behind the Konkan Railway project during his tenure as railway minister from 1989 to 1990. He was a defence minister in the NDA Government, when the Kargil War broke out between India and Pakistan, and India conducted its nuclear tests at Pokhran. Fernandes had been dogged by various controversies, including the Barak Missile scandal and the Tehelka affair. In spite of controversies, George Fernandes won nine Lok Sabha elections from 1967 to 2004. Fernandes’ name figured prominently in Operation West End, a sting operation by Tehelka, Bangaru Laxman, a senior officer in the Indian Army and Jaya Jaitly, the General Secretary of the Samata Party and Fernandes’ companion. The scandal caused an uproar all over India and Fernandes was forced to resign from his post as the Defence Minister. The one-man commission headed by retired Justice Phukan subsequently cleared him. The Committee investigated the case in detail, but Justice Venkataswami resigned before submitting the report in the case. His career, personal and political life saw many twists and turns but he kept on going with whatever came in his way.

A native of Mangalore, Fernandes was sent to Bangalore in 1946 to be trained as a priest. However, in 1949, he moved to Bombay, where he joined the socialist trade union movement. Becoming a trade union leader, Fernandes organised many strikes and bandhs in Bombay in the 1950s and 1960s while working with the Indian Railways. He defeated S K Patil of Indian National Congress in the 1967 parliamentary elections from the South Mumbai constituency. Fernandes went underground during the Emergency era of 1975, while challenging Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for imposing a state of emergency, but in 1976 he was arrested and tried in the infamous Baroda dynamite case. His social life had all ups and down and the personal front was also a struggle story.

Fernandes met Leila Kabir, the daughter of former Union minister Humayun Kabir, on a flight back to Delhi from Calcutta. Fernandes, the then general secretary of the Samyukta Socialist Party, was returning from Bangladesh while Leila Kabir was on her way back from the battlefront where she had gone as an assistant director of the Red Cross. They began dating and got married on July 22, 1971. They have a son, Sean Fernandes, who is an investment banker based in New York. The married life was not for a long time, Fernandes and Kabir separated in the mid-1980s. Jaya Jaitly has been Fernandes’ companion since 1984. They were in a live-in relation but Leila Kabir’s return to his life soured the relations between Jaya and Fernandes. He remained alone struggling on health fronts. Fernandes was suffering from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, and in January 2010 he was undergoing treatment at Baba Ramdev’s ashram at Haridwar for the diseases at the request of Leila Kabir, who had recently returned to his life. In February 2010, Fernandes’ brothers were reported to have been considering a court order for medical treatment and visitation; Kabir and Sean Fernandes are alleged to have forcibly removed Fernandes to an undisclosed location.

In July 2010, the Delhi High Court ruled that Fernandes would stay with Kabir and that Fernandes’ brothers would be able to visit. In August 2012, the Supreme Court of India granted permission to Jaya Jaitly, a former aide, to visit him, a move that was opposed by his wife on the ground of her locus stand. His personal life hit headlines for many years; finally, he and his personal life faded from the memory of people. He became forgotten and unwanted. Fernandes lived for 88 long years; he had recently contracted swine flu and died at his residence in Delhi. May his soul rest in peace!
