Arrested AV

A retired Army Captain was arrested on Saturday for allegedly duping people of several lakh rupees on the pretext of giving them jobs at a Navy canteen, a senior Crime Branch official said. The scam came to light Saturday morning when six of these job aspirants approached the Defence Audit Controller’s office in south Mumbai with “appointment letters” as canteen attendants, the official said.

“The candidates had received these letters from Delhi, On verification, they were found to be fake, following which an inquiry was initiated,” he said. The six persons told police that they were students of Sarasvati Defence Academy in Andhra Pradesh’s Vishakhapatnam city, he said. “The academy is run by retired Captain Imendri Shailendranath Trinetra (49). The six persons said they had paid Rs 6 lakh each to Trinetra to get jobs as canteen attendants,” the official said.

“Trinetra, who was in Mumbai, was called for questioning. We found that Trinetra made false promises to the aspirants and also managed to get them to undergo a medical test at a local hospital there,” said Dilip Sawant, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection), Mumbai. He said Trinetra sent the candidates fake appointment letters from New Delhi.

Police said a case was registered on a complaint made by the office of the Chief Defence Audit Controller, following which the accused was arrested.

Subramanian Swamy Raghuram Rajan AV

Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Sunday launched a scathing attack on former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, calling him a failed Governor of India’s central bank.

Swamy’s reaction comes in the wake of Rajan’s recent statement on the ongoing tussle between the government and the Central bank, where Rajan had batted for respecting the RBI’s autonomy.

Speaking to agencies, the senior BJP leader said, “Raghuram Rajan is staying in the United States. He should now forget about India. He himself is a failed Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.”

“He had joined hands with P Chidambaram in altering the gold policy. He caused the frauds involving Nirav Modi and Mehul Chowksi. I will ask the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe him next time he comes to India,” alleged Swamy.

In reply to a question, Swamy said, “The Congress is planning to ban the RSS, but the Christian fathers will be allowed to propagate Christianity. So the choice is now between RSS propagating Hindutva and Christian engaged in conversion.” “The Congress does not have any fresh ideas now. The old ones are not that appealing anymore.

Police arrest mining baron Janardhan Reddy AV

Former BJP minister and Bellary’s mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy was arrested on Sunday in an alleged bribery case, involving Ambident Group. He is suspected to have received 57 kg gold worth Rs 18 crore to help an accused in a case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

His arrest comes a day after Reddy appeared before the investigating agency after his anticipatory bail was rejected by the court. Police said he was interrogated till late night on Saturday.

“We have taken the decision to arrest him on the basis of credible evidence and witnesses’ statements. We will produce him before the magistrate. We are going to recover the money and give it to the investors,” said Alok Kumar, Additional CP, Crime Branch, Bengaluru Police.

Earlier, Bengaluru Commissioner of Police T Suneel Kumar had stated, “A company Ambident, set up in 2016-17 assured investors a return of 30-40 per cent per month in the form of profits. Thousands of people were lured to invest. Initially, they returned the first installment of profits as promised following which more people poured in.”

“Subsequently, when the company failed to return the principal amount, cases were registered. In January 2017, the ED raided the company. The crime branch took over the case and a probe was conducted which revealed that transactions to the tune of Rs 18 crore were carried out,” Kumar had added.

Later, it was discovered that the company had allegedly transferred the money to Ramesh Kothari who runs a billion business in the name of Ambika Jewellers. On quizzing Kothari, he informed that he had used the money to buy the gold, which was handed over to Reddy’s personal assistant Ali.

A Battle of Legacy: Where Both Will Be the Losers — Part II

On the same day, nephew Dushyant Chautala reacted on his uncle Abhay’s statement in a meeting at Yamuna Nagar by counter alleging, “Some people are trying to weaken the party and organisation, but their efforts will not be allowed to succeed. Whatever my grandfather Omprakash Chautala decides, will be acceptable to us and the policies of the party Supremo will not be allowed to downsize by anyone having bad intentions.”

Expressing his anguish over the issuance of show cause notice by the party alleging indiscipline, Dushyant Chautala said, “The drafting of the notice has pained me internally , because the words and style of it can never be those of my grandfather(Omprakash Chautala). This smells some conspiracy against me.”

Naina Chautala, an MLA of INLD and mother of Dushyant and Digvijay, has come to support her aggrieved duo. In her ‘Hari Chunari Chaupal’ (the meeting of her women supporters wearing green stole) she gave clean chit to her sons and asked the audiences, “Is raising slogans in favour of party leader indiscipline? Supporters of my sons never raised slogans against any party leader, then why they allege the duo of indiscipline?”

Party workers are also feeling pained over the legacy row and hope for the earliest possible settlement in the party interest. Om Prakash Barwa, a party MLA from Loharu constituency, talking with us over phone on Friday Nov 02, 2018, says, “We want the party leadership and Chautala family remain united and the present row should be resolved at the earliest under the leadership of party Supremo Chaudhary Omprakash Chautala.”

A contemporary of Ranjeet Singh revolt era, Ran Singh Maan, presently a spokesperson of congress and former chief parliamentary secretary in INLD party government, who also had been a close associate of late Chaudhary Devi Lal, says in a statement sent to this writer, “None of the present contenders of Chaudhary Devi Lal’s legacy is the real political heir of him. They all are his mere descendants and they are fighting for only utilizing Devi Lal’s brand name just to achieve their political goal.”

What the results will be?

The present legacy war is also taken as the repetition of previous one that dashed Ranjeet Singh to the zero political base and raised the eldest son Omprakash Chautala to sky heights and proved him the real political legal heir of Chaudhary Devi Lal. Here also the battle fighters, Abhay Singh Chautala and Dushyant Chautala, are trying to prove the other one as ‘Ranjeet Singh’. But, the time to come will tell, who will meet the fate of Ranjeet Singh. It is worth mention here that the grip of the then party supremo( Chaudhary Devi Lal ) was much stronger  than that of present Supremo, Omprakash Chautala being in jail and having health problems .

However, Dushyant Chautala is saying in every statement that he will follow the decision of his grandfather, Omprakash Chautala, irrespective of its side, it may take. But, the political analysts consider it a diplomatic statement and they clearly conclude that the loser will surely revolt and the winner will be the ‘Sikander’ for all the purposes. Because everyone knows that the winner will not vacate the legacy chair even for the coming kin of the loser. That is why the analysts declare it a decisive and once for all fight.

Now here seems to arise two situations and the political thinkers express doubts about the win of INLD party in both the possibilities. If the party splits, both the factions will not touch even the two figure line and if due to any political or family circle pressure they remain undivided and have to fight the elections under one flag of the party, even then the two factions will blow their own trumpets and try to ensure a win for self and a knock out for the other. There is a spread in the public that Mayawati’s BSP may also think over again on the alliance with the divided house. Whatever the outcome may be, it is certain that the surge of ‘Achchhe Din’ (Better Days) of INLD party is going to dark house.

Govinda alleges few film industry people are not letting his films release

Govinda AV

In wake of several cuts given to his upcoming film “Rangeela Raja”, Govinda has alleged that there is a group of people in the industry, who are conspiring to not let his films release.

A press conference was held on Saturday evening after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly refused to certify the film and ordered 20 cuts.

The film is produced by former CBFC chief and filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani.

“This has been happening for the last nine years where a group of people in the film industry is conspiring against me and not letting my films release on any good platform,” Govinda told reporters.

“Either my films are not getting a release or they are not getting good number of theatres or screens. The recent example was “Fryday” which released a few weeks ago and media gave it a good review. They took the film away from theatres,” he said, without taking any names.

“Our film industry was never like this and it seems we are living in a different world. If someone would have supported me then I would have not faced problems.

“Today no one is supporting me. I don’t have financiers or producers backing me. When he (Nihalani) is supporting me, he has been told, why are you working with Govinda,” the 54-year-old actor said.

Nihalani claims his film”Rangeela Raja” is a clean family entertainer and fails to understand why so many cuts are given by CBFC.

“I had applied for U/A certificate and I got that. ‘A’ certificate is given in case the content has elements of horror, vulgarity, obscenity and violence. In our film there is no kiss on the cheeks also. It is an entertaining film,” he said.

“Producers have to wait in some cases longer to get the certificate and this not only results in delay in releasing the film but producers also face financial losses. The ministry should do something,” he added.

Nihalani feels current CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi should be sacked.

“He should be sacked and I do not know why the whole film industry is silent. He does not go to the office, he calls producers at the Taj hotel and makes them wait for four hours to give the certificate for their films,” he added.

Lawyer Ashok Saraogi, who was present at the press conference, said the team chose to show the 20 cuts given by CBFC to the media to understand their views.

The producer has moved to the Bombay High Court to seek justice against the decision of CBFC. The hearing is on Monday.

Stardom easiest way for an actor to get corrupted: Naseeruddin Shah

Naseeruddin Shah AV

Naseeruddin Shah has no qualms in accepting that he has worked for money in some films but says the more tempting way for an actor to get corrupted is by becoming a star.

“The easiest way for an actor to get corrupted is by becoming a star. Then you start believing your own myth. You start believing what the press writes about you. That’s very dangerous,” Naseeruddin told agencies.

The actor says, no matter what position one holds in the industry, it is impossible to foresee the heights one can reach before signing a film.

“There’s no way anyone can ensure what will be the quality of a film when you read a script. You have to go by instincts and do it. Sometimes it goes right and sometimes wrong,” he adds.

The actor says in his film career of more than four decades, he has taken up films purely “to run the kitchen” and says one should not be ashamed of it.

“I’ve worked for money and there’s no shame. I need to run my kitchen. That’s what I tell younger actors. Don’t be afraid to do things for money. What are we all working for? Aren’t we working to feed ourselves. I’ve done films for money but not too many films.”

The “A Wednesday!” actor started his career featuring in several prominent films such as “Masoom”, “Sparsh”, “Nishant” among others.

The 68-year-old says he was fortunate to be a part of the movement where the independent cinema was thriving, and contrary to his decisions later, he worked for free “several times.”

“I was just an actor these filmmakers used. I admired the fact that the filmmakers were trying to do this and I’m honoured I became a centre of that movement. Some cynical friends used to say they want me in their films because I am ready to work for free.

“On many occasions I was told there would be no payment, a lot of times I was promised chicken feed amount like Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000 which I never got by these so-called serious filmmakers,” he adds.

The actor, however, continued to work with people he had faith in and cut off ties with those who took everyone for a ride.

“That did not embitter me because at the same time there were people like Shyam (Benegal) who was extremely generous and always very fair to everyone in his unit. I cut off relations with a lot of those filmmakers who I knew were taking everyone for a ride, not just me,” he adds.
