Cong-JD(S) blow to BJP in Karnataka bypolls

Karnataka bypolls AV

In an emphatic endorsement of Karnataka’s ruling JD(S)-Congress coalition by the voters, its candidates on Tuesday won both the assembly constituencies and are set to clinch two of the three Lok Sabha seats in the bitterly fought by-polls held on Saturday, officials said.

The byelections came as a major setback for the main opposition BJP ahead of the 2019 elections with the party set to lose the Ballari Lok Sabha seat, considered a stronghold of the controversial mining barons – the Reddy brothers.

V S Ugrappa of the Congress has established a lead of more than 2.14 lakh votes in Ballari over BJP’s J Shantha, the sister of B Sriramulu, a key aide of the Reddys and former MP from there.

The BJP is leading only in Shivamogga parliamentary seat, the pocket borough of the Leader of the Opposition B S Yeyyurappa. His son B Y Raghavendra has established a lead of more than 51,000 votes over Madhu Bangarappa of the JD(S). Madhu is the son of former Congress chief minister the late S Bangarappa.

Counting was in the final stages for the Lok Sabha seats, officials said.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha bagged the Ramanagara assembly seat by a spectacular margin of 1,09,137 against her nearest rival BJP’s L Chandrashekar, who had pulled out of the contest, but still officially remains the party candidate.

Chandrashekhar, who had joined the BJP ahead of the polls returned to Congress weeks later, leaving the saffron party red-faced and the field open for a walkover for Anitha Kumaraswamy.

Ramanagara seat fell vacant after Kumaraswamy preferred to retain Chennapatna, the other constituency from where he had won.

In Jamkhandi, Congress candidate Anand Nyamgouda defeated BJP’s Srikant Kulkarni by a margin of 39,480 votes, riding a sympathy wave following his father and sitting MLA Siddu Nyamagouda’s death in a road accident.

With Tuesday’s victory, the Congress-JD(S) alliance’s tally will go up to 120 seatsin the 224 member assembly where the BJP has 104 MLAs.

In Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, JD(S) candidate L Shivarame Gowda has established a lead of a staggering 3.24 lakh votes over BJP candidate Siddaramaiah, a political green horn and a former civil servant.

Mandya is a stronghold of the Vokkaliga community to which JD(S) supremo and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda belongs.

Elated over the performance of the ruling alliance candidates, jubilant Congress workers distributed sweets and broke coconuts at various places.

Karnataka Congress president Dinesh Gundu Rao claimed the results reflected the disenchantment of people with the BJP.

“Look at the margins…it’s clear that people are fed up with the BJP. This anti-people, anti-farmer, anti-women government at the Centre must go.

“All forces need to come together to take on the BJP. BJP will be wiped out of Karnataka in 2019 (Lok Sabha polls). If it is wiped out in Karnataka, it will be wiped out in the entire south India,” he said.

Karnataka is the only south Indian state where the BJP has been in power.

The by-elections for three Lok Sabha seats were necessitated after Yeddyurappa and Sriramulu of the BJP and C S Puttaraju of the JD(S) vacated Shivamogga, Ballari and Mandya following their election to the assembly in May.

Bypolls to Jamkhandi seat was necessitated following the death of sitting Congress MLA Siddu Nyamagouda, while Ramanagara fellvacant after Kumaraswamy gave it up.

Bhakts surrender unconditionally to ‘God-like Modi’ – Part I

Looking at the elections ahead, the political campaign has begun in a unique way. On Dhanteras, gold and silver bars with the picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi embossed in it, were being sold at a jewellery shop in Gujarat. The gold bars have already attracted hundreds of customers, claimed the jeweller.

Generally, as per our traditions, Lord Lakshmi and Ganesha are worshipped on every Diwali and Prime Minister Modi is also like God to us, said some of his worshippers. In this bizarre move, the Hindu Gods are replaced with Modi on the occasion of Dhanteras. It is our religious belief that on the day of Dhantrayodashi, Goddess Lakshmi came out from the ocean of milk during the churning of the Sea. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on the day of Trayodashi. According to a popular legend, when the Devas and the Asuras performed the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) for Amrita (the divine nectar of immortality), Dhanvantari (the physician of the Gods and an incarnation of Vishnu) emerged carrying a jar of the elixir on the day of Dhanteras. But that was a story of past, now Modi emerged as the new God for his Bhakts (worshippers).

There is a unique relation between the Bhakts (devotees) and the Bhagwan (God). A Bhakt always pleads to his Bhagwan, “Please ignore my flaws” and the God absolves him of all his sins and wrongdoings. In return, the Bhakt makes an unconditional surrender before his God. He is never supposed to doubt His existence or to question His wisdom. Not only the good things, even if something bad happens by him which is not in the interest of society and the nation at large, he is supposed to accept it as the God’s grace. This is the beauty of the relation between God and his Bhakt. Now, if Interest rate on your savings decreases, if your hard-earned PF is taxed, if global reduction of fuel prices are not passed on to you, if IIT fees are doubled or if bank loans to big corporates are written off, we, the stupid sinners and unholy people start complaining and brooding and fail to see the government’s intent of our welfare hidden in these measures. The Bhakts, on the other hand, who are equally affected as others by such harsh measures, never allow their faith to be shaken or weakened by such issues and continue to believe in the larger scheme of things of their Gods.

There are slurs for supporters of other political parties or political ideologies as well and almost all of them are used by (most) the Modi supporters in debates — the examples include AAPtards, Sickular, Commies, Libtard, Presstitutes, anti-national, and what not. Most of the slurs are in bad taste. For example, take the word “presstitutes”. It somehow seems to imply that being a prostitute is morally wrong. But the slur “Bhakt” is not in bad taste at all.

These Bhakts or the blind followers of Modi are ready to adopt, believe and buy anything to everything in the name of their leader lord. They easily believe BJP IT-cell propaganda without questioning: The so-called ‘bhakts’ easily fall for fake propaganda propagated by the BJP IT cell which is most of the times, diametrically opposite to facts. The propaganda includes fake development claims with fake numbers, showing opposition leaders in a bad light by generating fake news, presenting distorted history by projecting the Hindus as victims, faking nobility in Modi’s character again by distorted facts, exaggeration of the success of the government policies etc. Most of the Modi supporters fall prey to the propaganda and accept it as a fact without questioning or cross-checking. Bhakts, as they are referred to on social media, constitute a wide spectrum of right-wing supporters, who relentlessly champion the cause of their leader, Modi. They have grown into a cult. A cult that doesn’t question their supreme leader and doesn’t allow anyone else to question his deeds, if questioned, then one must be ready to die their death.

An upper middle class, right-wing, social media savvy, educated Hindu disgruntled with systemic failures of successive governments and who believes that India should become a theocratic state like Pakistan, now believes that only their supreme leader can deliver riches to the country. While there are many groups of people that share similar ideas, some of the traits of Bhakts make them unique and funny. Bhakts get agitated and lose their cool very often as they cannot stand criticism of their leader. Sometimes they don’t understand even the praises heaped upon their leader. Bhakts defend their supreme leader tooth and nail and in this process make some very provocative and anti-national statements which bring out their actual intentions. Very often, Bhakts get into verbal duels and end up slinging mud on others. Any individual opposed to their thoughts or views are stereotyped as paid followers of Congress or the Left. They can’t stand the idea that the society is made up of a spectrum of colours and everyone is entitled to their own views. Anyone not agreeing with the ideas of their supreme leader is stereotyped as Presstitute, Pappu etc., some of the terms coined by the veteran Bhakts. They indulge in systematic character assassination of some of the well-respected individuals in the society. Thus, they want to propagate their culture of hatred and push forward the right-wing agenda.

The paradox of their existence is that they are destroying the great Indian story of tolerance and amalgamation of thoughts/ideas while claiming that they represent the same. The Bhakts claim to be nationalists, the definition of which is narrowed down to suit the right-wing needs.

There are people who support Modi for his actions. They do praise him for his good decisions and criticise him when he is wrong. Many of them support his actions and not the political ideology, which he follows. They have no issue when someone has a different viewpoint. They are supporters but not Bhakts. Bhakts are those who replaced Modi with deities and the old-fashioned terms like Rama, Lakshmi as the Gods are forgotten — now it’s only Modi.

#BJPsNewIndia: Bhakts prefer God Modi over deities?

PM Modi AV

It is well known that Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly boasts his party’s achievements for the rise in the number of taxpayers in the country and states the reason as the centre is judiciously utilising the taxpayers’ money. At the same time, on the occasion of Dhanteras, it is observed by the twitterites that the BJP IT cell and its leaders are encouraging a move by the BJP to support the party and donate towards contributing for the country’s development. Here the question arises that if the ruling party is asking for a donation to build ‘New India’, then how is the government using the taxpayers’ money prudently?

On Nov 5, the BJP IT Cell took to Twitter by sharing a post that stated, “This Dhanteras, let us pledge our support to those who put India first. Donate to BJP through NaMo App. Give missed call on 18002090920 to download the App. #MyBJPMyDonation”. Manohar Parikar and BJP leaders are seen promoting this act of BJP on the social media that has helped this scheme to become a trending one over the social media but the oppositions are attacking this stunt by stating it as another way of looting the taxpayers’ money.

BJP spokesperson Shivray Kulkarni explained, “BJP do use the taxpayers’ money for the development at the central level. But BJP is an organsiation and it needs to raise fund to contribute for an emergency situation such as floods, earthquake, tsunami, etc. to help other States and the nation. So, if the  voters trust in BJP, they will surely contribute through this mean.”

However, commenting on the social media posts, he said, “BJP does not need any such kind of publicity. Modi has its popularity in the nation and that is the reason that shopkeepers are using Modi’s picture to increase their sales.”

However, if experts are to be believed, then BJP is leaving no stones unturned to utilise the opportunity to the core with selling an embossed picture of PM on gold and silver bars. It raises the eyeballs of many as they ask whether this course of action is to attract the voters on the occasion of Dhanteras be one of its electoral campaigns?

Congress leader Anant Gadgil also raised the concern on the utilisation of taxpayers’ money by asking, “Even I have a doubt that where is the government using the taxpayers’ money? Are they using it to buy Rafale jet or in note ban to create a chaos for the citizen? In the past four years, many schemes have been announced but we don’t know where and how much money out of the allotted money is used!”

“This is one of the BJP’s marketing strategies. Even after Congress being in power for 60 years, we could not build an office, reportedly the BJP is making one; it seems like the taxpayers’ money are being used to build lavish offices for them,” he irked further.

As per the reports, on this Dhanteras, gold and silver bars, with a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi embossed in it, are being sold at a jewellery shop in Gujarat’s Surat. This is not the first time that the shop has manufactured jewellery with Prime Minister Modi’s face embossed on it. In August, he had designed gold rakhis with photos of Prime Minister Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on them. The rakhis, made of 22-carat gold, were selling like hot cakes, the jeweller had claimed.

BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari explained, “This is not any strategy by BJP. The marketers sell whatever is popular in the market at that particular time period which can help them earn a maximum profit and increase their sales and our Prime Minister’s popularity is well-maintained even today; hence, people buy and sell. On asking about the tweet on social media, he refused to comment saying that he is unaware of any such happenings.”

On one hand, the Modi supporters and bhakts are celebrating the festivities with more joy and enthusiasm with these schemes as the gold markets are hitting new standards of high sales at Prime Minister’s face value. On the other hand, the political analysts believe this as the political strategy ahead of the elections.

Vacating official residences: Govt’s benevolence on 15 bureaucrats

Anil Galgali AV

At a time when the state government has made a policy to levy penal charges on those over staying in the flats allotted to them, the government itself is acting benevolent on 15 bureaucrats as per the information provided by the government to RTI Activist Anil Galgali. Of those 15 officials, maximum are on deputation to the central government or are posted out of Mumbai.

Galgali had sought information from the state government seeking list of officials occupying government accommodation beyond the permitted period. The Government’s General Administration department provided a list of 15 officials comprising of 12 IAS and 3 IPS officer’s.

IPS Rashmi Shukla has been posted out of Mumbai and apart from regularising her current accommodation has given extension for her Mumbai previously allotted flat. Surendra Bagade is on appointment with the Mumbai Municipal Corporation and has been allowed to retain the state government accommodation. Vinit Agarwal is on deputation with the central government and he has been allowed to occupy the state government accommodation till he receives a central government accommodation. Baldev Singh is also on deputation to central government and has been allowed to retain the state accommodation till March 31, 2019. Sanjay Chahande too is on deputation to central government and has been allowed to retain the state accommodation.

We also have officers like JP Dange and V Giriraj who have not vacated their accommodation even after retirement. V Giriraj was given an extension up to April 30, 2018. After retirement, KP Bakshi and Dilip Jadhav have been reappointed to the State Water Conservation Commission and Emergency Medical Services respectively and they have been provided extension to the allotted government accommodation.

The six officials namely, Vijay Suryavanshi, Avinash Subedar, Kailash Shinde, Kishore Raje Nimbalkar, Rajesh Deshmukh, and Milind Shambarkar have been transferred out of Mumbai and have not yet vacated the government accommodation. Milind Shambarkar was given an extension to occupy the accommodation up to April 30, 2018, and Rajesh Deshmukh has been given extension up to May 31, 2019, to occupy the accommodation.

Galgali has alleged that, the government has in the past four years made rules to increase the charges and levy penalty for those found not vacating the allotted flats after the period ends, but it is sad the government itself has been supporting and backing the officials. He also expressed regret that many officials have managed to get flats in buildings developed on government plots or some other means have been holding on the government accommodation as well. In a letter addressed to CM Devendra Fadnavis, Galgali has questioned the intention of the government for protecting such officials in spite of making rules to recover penal charges from those overstaying in government accommodations.

Nirupam seeks scrapping of Dhobi Ghat redevelopment

Sanjay Nirupam AV

Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam Monday wrote a letter requesting Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to scrap the ongoing redevelopment of iconic Dhobi Ghat under the SRA scheme.

Nirupam had last week alleged the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) illegally granted permission for the amalgamation of Dhobi Ghat near Mahalaxmi, a 140-year-old heritage site, along with the nearby temples under the Slum Redevelopment Scheme (SRA).

“We have already exposed the vested interests of the BMC chief Ajoy Mehta through a letter dated August 13, 2018 which was written by Chief Engineer (Development Plan) to the architect.

“After being nailed, Mehta is now attempting to shift the blame to the SRA claiming that it was the purview of the SRA and not the BMC. But the main issue here is amalgamation of this 140-year old heritage site should not be allowed under the SRA Scheme,” Nirupam stated.

He requested the chief minister to immediately stay the BMC’s action “for the sake of preserving the iconic site”.

Clarifying that he was not against the redevelopment of Dhobi Ghat, the Congress leader said he only wanted that interests of the residents of the area are protected.

The BMC had already denied the allegations of Nirupam.

Meanwhile, Nirupam targetted the BJP-led state government over the killing of man-eater tigress T1 by a sharpshooter who was part of a team of forest officials in Yavatmal district.

The Congress leader sought to link the deaths of people who were attacked by the big cat in the past to the “failure” of the Maharashtra government in constructing toilets, which he said forced the villagers to defecate in open.

“The killing of the tigress is a barbaric murder. While ‘Avni’ was termed as a man-eater, most of its victims lost their lives when they left their houses to relieve themselves in the open. If these people had access to toilets, this wouldn’t have happened.

“Our Forest Minister (Sudhir Mungantiwar) wouldn’t have had the opportunity to kill the national animal of the country in the name of safety. Why toilets were not constructed in Yavatmal district? Instead of constructing more toilets for the people, the government hired a sharp shooter to kill the big cat,” he alleged.

Avni, forgive us: Sena condoles death of tigress

Uddhav Thackeray AV

The Shiv Sena on Monday came down heavily on government authorities for killing man-eater Tigress ‘Avni’ and called for the adoption of adequate measures to avoid human-animal conflicts.

In its editorial mouthpiece, Saamna, the party, while acknowledging that the tigress killed 13 people in the last two years, blamed the rampant intrusion into wildlife inhabited areas as the reason for it.

“If one inserts his hand inside a snake’s burrow, it is but natural that it will bite the person. The same is happening in the case of wild animals. Humans have intruded the space of tigers. Forests are being destroyed, hills are being broken. It has become difficult for tigers to live. After doing so much how can we expect any humanitarianism from tigers?” the write-up read.

It further raised the issue of increasing residential colonies in, and around Borivali National Park and claimed that this was the reason why leopards enter colonies and even killed people at times.

The Shiv Sena also asserted that instead of shooting animals, it is important for humans to be more disciplined.

In the wake of the incident, the party urged authorities to provide basic facilities of housing and sanitation to those who are forced to live under the constant fear of attack by wild animals.

The Shiv Sena also raised suspicion over the way Avni was killed and claimed that proper procedures were not followed. It alluded that dead bodies of only 6 out of the 13 people allegedly killed by the tigress were sent for post-mortem, and only 1 was actually found to be killed by a tiger.

The Shiv Sena also compared Avni’s killing with the alleged mistreatment meted out to farmers. “If Avni can be termed a man-eater for reportedly killing 13 people, why isn’t any government machinery being held responsible for the situation of drought, starvation, malnutrition which is leading to the death of farmers?” it questioned.

“Avni you were sacrificed for the greed of humans. In a state where even humans can’t live properly, what do we say about wild animals like you? Avni, forgive us. You were killed cowardly,” the party concluded.

Tigress Avni, who was believed to be responsible for the death of 13 people in the past two years, was gunned down by sharp-shooter Asgar Ali in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal on November 2.

Gambhir steps down as Delhi Ranji captain, Nitish Rana takes over

Gautam Gambhir AV

Gautam Gambhir was on Monday replaced by Nitish Rana as Delhi’s Ranji captain after the team’s senior-most player decided to make way for someone younger at the top position.

“Time to pass the captaincy baton to youngsters, hence have requested the DDCA selectors not to consider me for that role. I will be in the background helping the new leader to win games,” Gambhir tweeted.

Rana, the 24-year-old middle-order batsman, has an average of 46.29 in 24 first-class appearances so far. Shorey has 21 first-class matches to his credit and is a top-order batsman.

“Gautam has intimated the state team’s chief selector Amit Bhandari that he would like to opt out of captaincy. He suggested that someone younger be groomed for the job. Nitish Rana will lead the side and Dhruv Shorey will be his deputy,” Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rajat Sharma told agencies.

“We would have loved to have Gautam leading the team. At the same time, I am happy that Gautam has decided to take a back seat and will groom the new captain,” Sharma added.

The Delhi squad, for the first match scheduled on November 12, at the Feroz Shah Kotla will be named later on Monday.

Gambhir was reinstated as captain at the start of the season and led Delhi to the Vijay Hazare finals, scoring close to 500 runs in the National One-Dayers.
