Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Ajit Pawar on Thursday criticised the state government for disrupting the proceedings in the Assembly and also repeated adjournments over Disha Salian’s death case and diverting from the real issues.

“It is surprising that ruling parties are creating a stir on non-issues. They should be ashamed of themselves for doing such nautanki,” Pawar said on the repeated adjournment of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

“Today the ruling party has created a stir in the House for the third time. The Disha Salian (the former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput) case was taken by CBI and it came to notice that it was suicide and everything was cleared on it. But the ruling party is again raising this issue, we wanted to raise other important issues. I want to know that do they don’t trust CBI. This is against democracy and we condemn this act of the ruling party as it is nothing but a drama going on,” said Pawar.

Pawar’s statement came after BJP MLA Nitesh Rane and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) MLA Bharat Gogavale raised the issue of Disha Salian’s death in the Maharashtra Assembly and demanded an inquiry. Nitesh Rane demanded a re-investigation in Salian’s death case for an alleged role of Aaditya Thackeray.

Rane said, “The Mumbai police are investigating the case. However, during the earlier government’s tenure, much evidence is suspected to be tampered with. Hence, we demand to re-open this case.”

“Let the truth about the case come out, it’s still with Mumbai Police and not yet investigated by CBI. I will request the chief minister to hand over the case to CBI. The final postmortem report is yet to come and pages of the entire book are yet to be found hence Narco test of Aaditya Thackeray must be conducted. It is A for Aaditya and A for Aaftab…”, Rane added.

The issue racked up after Eknath Shinde faction MP Rahul Shewale yesterday took the issue in Lok Sabha and made allegations in which Shewale alleged that in Sushant Singh’s case, many calls were received in the name of AU, who is this “AU its Aaditya or Uddhav.”

Meanwhile, Uddhav faction MLA Bhaskar Jadhav targeted Union and State Home Minister for delayed investigation for political benefits. He also mentioned how the State Ex-Intelligence Chief Rashmi Shukla was given clean cheat in a phone-tapping case of Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders during BJP’s rule.

Disha Salian died on June 8, 2020 following which a few days later on June 14, actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his residence in Mumbai.

After constant protests and several letters to the government, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved the Anna Hazare Committee report for introducing a Lokayukta in Maharashtra on the lines of Lokpal. The Chief Minister and the entire Cabinet will also come under the purview of Lokayukta. “A Bill will be brought in this (winter session of Maharashtra legislature) session,” Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said. The Lokayukta will have five people, including retired High Court judges and there will be two benches of Lokayukta.

A proposal over the ongoing Karnataka-Maharashtra border row is set to be passed in the upcoming winter session of the state Assembly that begins in Nagpur on Monday. “We will pass a proposal pertaining to the Karnataka-Maharashtra border row in the winter session of the state Assembly. CM Eknath Shinde will table the proposal in the Assembly,” Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said, on Saturday. The border issue between the two states dates back to 1957 after the reorganisation of states on linguistic lines. “The Congress and the NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) are responsible for this problem. The issue is the creation of the Congress party,” Fadnavis alleged.

In other news, Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, was felicitated by the Bombay High Court on Saturday. Speaking about the Bombay High Court, the CJI said its strength lies in its ability to write, formulate and lay down the law for the future. “It was judges like Rane who kept the torch of liberty burning which had become dim in those years of Emergency in 1975. It was the fearless sense of independence of our courts which saved Indian democracy in 1975,” the CJI said at the ceremony. CJI Chandrachud assumed the office of the Chief Justice of India in November.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has warned Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai over the Belagavi border dispute and said “he (Bommai) and his party workers will enter Karnataka how China enters India. Sena leader also said, “We don’t need anyone’s permission to enter Karnataka.”

BJP MP from Karnataka, P. Chikkamuni Mohan told Afternoon Voice, “It is not possible for anybody to enter Karnataka in this manner. How can someone else enter the state forcefully.”

Karnataka MP of BJP, Shivkumar Udasi said, “It is ridiculous and this issue of the border clash is already in the supreme court. It was already said that the Mahajan Commission report is the final report on which how can someone enter the state illegally. So this is only political agenda to scream on this issue without any sense.”

NCP spokesperson, Ravikant Varpe said, “This is all election-winning strategy of the BJP and they know that the border clash of Maharashtra and Karnataka has gone to the Supreme Court then why there are false remarks made by the Karnataka CM Bommai on the issue.”

Varpe further said, “BJP works on a commission basis and they are losing the power in the state due to which they are making unnecessary comments on other parties and Maharashtra.”

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday said in Lok Sabha that the states have been asked to ensure that people wear masks, maintain social distancing and use sanitizers in the wake of the festive and new year season.

“In the wake of festive & new year season, states are advised to make sure people wear masks, use sanitizers and maintain social distancing along with increasing awareness for precautionary doses,” Mandaviya said in Lok Sabha.

Here Are The Top Points:

• Centre has advised states to increase genome sequencing to timely identify the new variant of Covid-19. We are keeping an eye on the global covid situation and are taking steps accordingly, Mansukh Mandaviya said in Lok Sabha.

• The health dept has been quite proactive in managing the Covid-19 pandemic. The central govt has provided financial assistance to states in fighting against the pandemic. So far, 220 cr covid vaccine shots have been given, Mandaviya told Lok Sabha.

• Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday said that the government has started random RT-PCR sampling among the passengers arriving at International airports in the country amid the recent surge of Coronavirus infection in various countries including China, Japan, South Korea, France, and the United States.

• Mandaviya then claimed that the number of Covid cases is depleting in India despite its surge across the world.

• Mandaviya chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review the COVID-19 situation in India and the preparedness of the public health system for surveillance, containment, and management of COVID-19. He urged people to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour and get vaccinated against the virus.

• Mandaviya emphasized that Covid-19 is not over yet and asked the officials to be fully geared up and strengthen surveillance.

• Mandaviya has already directed the officials to be fully geared up and strengthen the surveillance system for whole genome sequencing of positive case samples to track the variants through the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) network to ensure the timely detection of newer variants, if any, circulating in the country.

On her plea, the Court has directed Enforcement Directorate (ED) to file a reply in the matter and listed it for hearing on Thursday (December 22). She withdraws her bail application from the court.

This comes after the court showed objection over the plea and said “You can withdraw the application and let the question of charge first be decided. Otherwise I will pass a judicial order,” the judge said.

During the brief arguments, the counsel that appeared for ED opposed her plea and argued that the proceedings in the main case are at a crucial stage and being a foreign national, if she is allowed to travel, she may not turn up.

During the hearing, Senior Advocate Siddharth Aggarwal who appeared for Jacquline, in his statement said, “I’ll not miss my dates on a single day in the court. On January 6, accuse 1 (Sukesh Chandrashekhar) will argue for his case and my (Jacqueline’s) turn would come later”.

Jacqueline Fernandez is one of the accused in the Rupees 200 Crore money laundering case involving Sukesh Chandrashekhar and others.

Jacqueline through a plea had sought permission to travel to her birthplace Bahrain to meet her ailing mother and claimed that her mother is going through several medical issues.

She sought permission to travel to Bahrain from December 23, 2022, to January 5, 2023. Notably, Jacqueline’s plea stated that the applicant is a renowned actor in the Indian film industry having films to her credit in not only Hindi-language cinema but also regional cinema across the country.

She is a citizen of Sri Lanka and has been a resident of India since 2009. She has also been an income tax payee since 2009. ED in the case earlier submitted that the applicant is in receipt of proceeds of crime, which has partly been provisionally attached and the remaining is yet to be identified.

Thus, it is averred that disposing of the proceeds of the crime yet to be attached by the applicant cannot be ruled out.

Fernandez is being investigated by the ED in Rs 200 crore extortion case involving alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar.

She had earlier appeared before the probe agency for questioning in a money-laundering investigation against Sukesh Chandrashekhar and others.

Previously, the Delhi Police Economic Offence Wing (EOW) filed a chargesheet naming 14 accused including Conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, his Wife Leena Maria Paul and others in 2021.

The Chargesheet was filed under various sections of IPC and provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

According to the EOW, Leena, Sukesh with others used Hawala routes, creating Shell companies to park the money earned from proceeds of crime.

Delhi Police’s EOW had registered an FIR against Chandrasekhar for allegedly duping the spouses of former promoters of Ranbaxy, Shivinder Singh, and Malvinder Singh, of Rs 200 crore besides ongoing investigations against him in several cases across the country.

According to the Prosecution, the EOW extended its investigation into the case related to extortion of over Rs 200 crore, by Rohini jail inmate Sukesh Chandrasekar for allegedly duping wives of former Religare promoters Malvinder and Shivinder Singh, who are currently in Tihar jail.

Investigations revealed that the accused Sukesh Chandrasekar had duped Shivinder’s wife Aditi Singh and Malvinder’s wife Japna Singh worth several crores of rupees.

The women claimed that they have paid crores of rupees to the conman to secure bail for their husbands and ensure their safety, posing as an officer from the Union Law Ministry.

Chandrasekhar and his associates allegedly took money from Aditi after posing as government officials and promising to get bail for her husband.

As per reports, Chandrasekhar persuaded Aditi to transfer money by impersonating a central government official over a spoof call while he was lodged in Rohini jail and promised to manage bail for her husband.

Both Chandrasekhar and his actor wife Leena Maria Paul were arrested by the Delhi Police in September last year for their alleged role in the duping case.

The Opposition leaders of the Maharashtra legislative assembly on Thursday staged a walk-out after Speaker Rahul Narwekar denied a debate on the phone-tapping incident raised by Congress MLA Nana Patole.

Despite relentless pleas by the Opposition legislators before the Speaker to discuss the phone-tapping incident, the same was denied, to which Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar jabbed at Narwekar and said that the speaker was shielding the government and staged a walk-out from the House along with other Opposition MLAs.

Pawar said that rule 57 of the state legislature entails keeping aside the listed proceedings to take up issues of utmost importance.

“The phone tapping issue was very important so we requested to stop the Q and A session and asked for a discussion over the phone tapping issue, as the BJP-Shinde govt formed the investigation but it was stopped. We have been in the house for the past 30 to 35 years and we know how the functioning is but an attempt to crab our voice has been made, and clean chit has been given to them, so today we decided to walk out from the house,” said Pawar.

There were allegations of phone tapping levelled by several MLAs including Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole.

The controversy over phone tapping erupted in 2020 after audio clips purportedly having a telephonic conversation between Union minister Gajendra Singh and Congress leaders surfaced.

Pune Police also registered an FIR against former city Police Commissioner Rashmi Shukla in the Maharashtra phone tapping case. The case was registered under section 26 of the Indian Telegraph Act.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said the government is coming up with “excuses” to stop the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, days after Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya wrote to him to consider suspending the march if Covid protocols could not be followed.

The yatra, which started in Kanyakumari on September 7, has covered Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

“This yatra will go to Kashmir. Now, they have come out with a new idea. They wrote me a letter that Covid was spreading, stop the yatra,” Gandhi said while addressing a gathering in Ghasera village in Haryana’s Nuh district. The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by him entered the state through Nuh on Wednesday after its Rajasthan leg.

“Now, they are coming up with excuses to stop the yatra. Wear masks, stop the yatra, Covid is spreading, these are all excuses,” he said. Targeting the BJP, which is in power at the Centre and in Haryana, Gandhi said it is scared of the truth. “Hindustan ki shakti say, Hindustan ki Sachai say, yeh log dar gaye hai, yeh sachai hai (they have got scared of power and truth of the country. This is the truth),” the former Congress chief said.

Gandhi also said that “we do not want RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi’s hate filled India”. The Bharat Jodo Yatra has been going on for more than 100 days and in this people from all faiths, including Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians, men, women, and children have taken part, he said. In this, lakhs have taken part, but no one even asked anyone what their religion was, what language they spoke or from which place they came from. In this yatra, for 24 hours, people respected each other and hugged each other and spread love, Gandhi said.

Panchamasali Lingayat community demands reservation and holds Padayatra in Karnataka

The Panchamasali Lingayat community padayatra, demanding more reservations to meet the educational and professional needs of its people, reached Belagavi in Karnataka on Thursday.

The community is demanding they be included in the 15 per cent OBC category of 2A.

A heavy police force has been deployed at Hirebagewadi in Belagavi due to the Panchamasali padayatra being held under the leadership of the Jagadguru Basava Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swamiji of the Kundalasangama Peetha. Karnataka Assembly is currently holding its Winter Session at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi.

State Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said that the Panchamasali Lingayats are protesting peacefully for their demands and the police have made appropriate arrangements as per the number of protestors, here. “I am sure that they won’t barge into Vidhana Soudha, they have given place and accordingly we have made police deployment and arrangements,” Karnataka Home Minister said.

Further reacting to Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut’s remarks on Wednesday, Jnanedra said: “Their language shows how immature they are. It shows his immaturity, he doesn’t know the difference between China- India border and Maharastra- Karnataka border. We are living in a federal system and I am sure that the Maharastra government will not allow such things to happen.” “We are also firm with our stand and we know how to deal with it if any such organisation or person tries to create problem between two states,” he added.

Raut yesterday sparked a controversy by saying, “We will enter Karnataka like China has entered the country”. “Like China has entered, we will enter (Karnataka). We don’t need anyone’s permission. We want to solve it through a discussion but Karnataka CM is igniting a fire. There is a weak government in Maharashtra and is not taking any stand on it,” Sanjay Raut said yesterday. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai on that day later hit out at Maharashtra’s Opposition leaders, claiming that they had ‘lost their mental balance’.

The Panchamasalis, a subsection of the Lingayat community in Karnataka come under category 3B which has a 5 per cent quota.

They now want to be included under category 2A, in which they will get a share in the 15 per cent reservation.

Notably, tensions are already prevailing in the border areas of Belagavi on the Maharashtra Karnataka border after members of the Maharastra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) and Nationalist Congress Party staged a protest on Monday demanding they be allowed into Belagavi.

However, Belagavi Police denied permission to MES to conduct its Maha Melava at the Vaccine Depot ground in Tilakwadi and clamped prohibited orders in Tilakwadi Police Station jurisdiction.

It also imposed Section 144 in the area and heavy security was deployed at the site. The border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka goes back to the implementation of the State Reorganization Act, of 1956.

The then Maharashtra government had demanded the readjustment of its border with Karnataka.

Following this, a four-member committee was formed by both states.

The Maharashtra government had expressed willingness to transfer 260 predominantly Kannada-speaking villages, but the proposal was turned down by Karnataka. Both governments later approached the Supreme Court to expedite the matter.
