The district administration has prohibited the entry of Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Dhairyasheel Mane to the Belagavi city to take part in an event organised by Madhyavarti Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MMES) on Monday.

The MMES has organised a protest at the Vaccine Depot Ground in Tilakwadi in the district headquarter town of Belagavi as the 10-day winter session of Karnataka Legislature starts here.

Dhairyasheel Mane, a Lok Sabha member from Hatkanangle constituency, had written to the district authorities to make arrangements for his visit. In his letter to the police commissioner of Belagavi city, Mane said he should be provided a pilot car and escort along with Y+ category security.

But, the Deputy Commissioner of Belagavi district Nitesh K Patil issued a prohibitory order banning Mane’s entry. Patil said the MP would take part in the event organised by the MMES where it is likely that he may deliver inflammatory speeches, which would lead to linguistic conflict and create a law and order problem. This would eventually lead to damage to public properties.

“In order to maintain law and order and uphold peace, I, Nitesh K Patil, District Magistrate, Belagavi District exercising powers under section 144 of the CrPC, issue this order to initiate steps to prevent the entry of Maharashtra MP Dhairyasheel Mane from entering the border of Belagavi district,” the order read.

Meanwhile, a MMES leader Suraj Kanbarkar told PTI that the police have given permission to hold the event at Vaccine Depot. “However, we are not sure which leader from Maharashtra is likely to attend the event here though we have given invitation to all the important people,” he said.

Amid the border row between Karnataka and Maharashtra, the MMES organised the event to protest the winter session of Karnataka legislature in Belagavi. Maharashtra has been demanding the merger of Belagavi with it saying that the district has a substantial Marathi population.

The Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti which had been fighting for this cause for over five decades had been able to send its members to the Karnataka Assembly to raise their demand.

However, in the current Karnataka Assembly, the Samiti does not have any representative. Karnataka has always maintained that the border dispute was settled by the Mahajan Committee and there was no question of letting go any piece of land to any other State.

The political parties of Maharashtra, according to the sources in ruling BJP, always supported the Samiti to carry on with activities.

Maharashtra will have a Lokayukta law on the lines of the Centre’s Lokpal law which will also bring chief minister and ministers under its ambit, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference on the eve of the winter session of the state legislature, he said a bill in this regard will be introduced.

The recommendations of a panel led by social activist Anna Hazare have been accepted completely. He said the Lokayukta will be a retired chief justice of the High Court or a Supreme Court (judge).

”The chief minister will be brought under the ambit of Lokayukta and so will the ministers (of the state Cabinet),” Fadnavis added.

Former Maharashtra chief minister and MLC Uddhav Thackeray will attend the winter session of the state legislature beginning here on Monday, opposition leader Ajit Pawar said.

Thackeray, who heads the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction, had not attended the monsoon session of the state legislature held in Mumbai.

“Uddhav Thackeray will be present for the winter session (of the Maharashtra legislature),” Pawar said while responding to a query from reporters.

Interestingly, after announcing his decision to quit as the chief minister in June this year, Thackeray said he would also resign as a member of the Upper House of the state legislature.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Thackeray collapsed following a rebellion led by Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and several MLAs against the party leadership.

Subsequently, Shinde took oath as the chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy.

Bihar hooch tragedy toll crossed 100, people performing last rites without post-mortem due to fear of police: Sushil Modi

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sushil Modi on Sunday claimed that the family members of the victims in the Chapra hooch tragedy are performing their last rites without post-mortem due to “fear of the police”.

Modi also accused the state government of hiding the actual number of deaths in the tragedy and claimed “more than 100 deaths”.

“The death toll has crossed 100 but the government is hiding the numbers. Due to fear of the police, people are performing the last rites of their family members without a post-mortem,” Sushil Modi said while addressing the reporters here.

Modi on Saturday met the families of those who lost their lives in the Chhapra hooch tragedy. The death toll in Bihar’s Chhapra due to the consumption of spurious liquor has mounted to 65.

The incident was initially reported on Wednesday. Most deaths reportedly occurred over Wednesday and Thursday, evoking an uproar inside and outside the Bihar Assembly. Several leaders of the opposition are claiming more deaths than the official.

The Opposition, led by the BJP, took on the ruling JD(U)-RJD over the rising number of hooch deaths despite a ban on the sale and consumption of liquor in the state, which has been in effect since April 2016.

Amid severe criticism from the Opposition, led by the BJP, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday said that no compensation will be given if a person dies after consuming spurious liquor.

“No compensation will be provided to people who die after consuming spurious liquor. We have been appealing to you not to drink. If you drink, you will die. Those who speak against prohibition will not bring any good to the people,” the Bihar CM said in the Assembly on Friday.

Meanwhile, taking a suo-moto cognizance in this matter, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Saturday said that it will depute its own team headed by one of its members for an on-the-spot inquiry in the wake of more deaths reported in other districts of Bihar in hooch tragedy. The Commission said it is concerned to know where and what kind of medical treatment is being provided to these victims.

“Most of them are from poor families and probably cannot afford costly medical treatment in private hospitals therefore, it becomes extremely necessary on the part of the state government to provide them the best possible medical treatment wherever it is available,” the NHRC said in a statement.

The Commission has noted that in April 2016, the Government of Bihar had banned the sale and consumption of liquor in the state, and therefore, such incidents indicated that it has not been able to stop the sale of illicit and spurious liquor.

On the one hand, the Center government claiming to give justice to the unorganized workers, but on the other hand, a shocking incident has come to light in Mumbai where the Indian Post Office is manipulating an unorganized worker to issue a letter claiming to be an unorganized worker to get financial assistance.

Right to information activist Anil Galgali has submitted a written complaint about the non-cooperation and negative functioning of the Indian Postal Department to the central government.

Suraj Pal, who worked as a porter in the Sahar postal division of the Indian Department of Posts, Mumbai, came out of death and his wife worked round the clock to raise a loan of 10 lakhs.

But the Indian Post Office is not ready to issue non-permanent letter to these honest employees.Suraj Pal, who lives in Kajupada, Sakinaka, Mumbai, works as a porter and his work is not permanent.

First He was admitted to Disha Hospital on October 7, 2022 due to brain haemorrhage. Kokilaben was admitted to Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital as the conditions in Disha Hospital not so good.

Since her husband’s life was important. Although she was not in a financial position, Sangeeta collected 10 lakh rupees with the help of her relatives and others.

The bill was more than 20 lakh but due to the cooperation and guidance of Rugna Mitra through RTI activist Anil Galgali, a 50 percent discount was achieved and Suraj Pal returned home safely, said Sangeeta Pal.

Sangeeta sought help from the Tata organization with the intention of returning 10 lakhs. Husband Suraj Pal will get financial assistance if he brings letter of non-permanent worker, On receiving such assurance, Sangeeta Pal sent a written letter dated 19 November 2022 to PC Jagtap, Senior Superintendent of Railway Mail Service. Jagtap sent that letter to Superintendent Padwal for further action. Why hesitate so much to give a letter of not working permanently? Sangeeta Pal alleges that the postal department is not issuing letters and is avoiding.

Asking this question, Anil Galgali has filed a complaint with Communications Minister Ashwin Vaishnav. Time to issue immediate letter and action against the concerned officials, demanded Anil Galgali.

Chairing the National Council meeting of Aam Adami Party (AAP) at Calista Resort in Kapashera on Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked the people to boycott Chinese goods.

Slamming the Modi government, he said, the government does not care about the lives of soldiers. Indian soldiers prevented Chinese troops from entering the Indian territory last week during a border face-off that led to injuries on both sides, the government said earlier this week.

The recent skirmish was the first since deadly clashes in June 2020 when Indian and Chinese troops were involved in hand-to-hand combat in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh, in which 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives.

In the present discourse of events, Kejriwal alleged, “Who are buying the goods of China? What is the compulsion of BJP to buy goods from China? Can’t we increase our indigenous production? We buy the same stuff from China which could be produced in our country.”

Adding further he said, “The government is driving away the people of India and hugging the people of China. Traders and industrialists are leaving India.”

At the event, Kejriwal also categorically pointed out the difference between AAP and other parties. “One party is enmeshed in corruption, whereas the other party promotes hooliganism and provides shelter to the goons. People can see that AAP stands for honesty and impartiality.”

Talking about the divine intervention bestowed upon him and his party, he cited back-to-back success stories of AAP this year.

“In one year we got Punjab, won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), 2 MLAs in Goa and 5 MLAs with 14% vote share in Gujarat. In reference to the Gujarat success, one person told me that I milked a bullock,” quipped Kejriwal.

On top of that, Kejriwal earlier claimed that his 10-year-old party has become a “national party” after AAP got almost 14 percent votes in the Gujarat Assembly election.

Kejriwal also emphasized on the importance of education in the country and creating ‘job-givers’ more than ‘job-seekers’. He claimed that the AAP government has created more than 12 lakhs job opportunities.

Kejriwal ambitiously said that his dream is to make every poor of the country rich.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday attended the commissioning ceremony of ‘Mormugao’, a P15B stealth-guided missile destroyer, at Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

The commissioning ceremony marks the formal induction into the Navy of the second of the four ‘Visakhapatnam’ class destroyers, indigenously designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house organisation, Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai.

Named after the historic port city of Goa on the West coast, Mormugao coincidentally undertook her first sea sortie on 19 Dec 21, when Goa celebrated 60 years of liberation from Portuguese rule.

Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai, Goa CM Pramod Sawant and other dignitaries attended the commissioning ceremony.

Speaking at the event Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said, “today is yet another milestone in the history of indigenous warship building as we commission the destroyer Mormugao, particularly when our sister ship Visakhapatnam was inducted into the Indian Navy just over a year ago.”

“This achievement is indicative of the large strides we have taken in warship design and building capability over the last decade. The Navy has a tradition of naming ships after cities which creates an enduring umbilical link between the two,” Navy Chief added.

The majestic ship measures 163m in length, and 17 m in breadth with a displacement of 7400 tonnes and can rightfully be regarded as one of the most potent warships to have been constructed in India.

The ship is propelled by four powerful Gas Turbines, in a Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) configuration, capable of achieving speeds in excess of 30 knots. The ship has enhanced stealth features resulting in a reduced Radar Cross Section (RCS).

Mormugao is packed with sophisticated ‘state of the art’ weapons and sensors such as Surface to Surface Missile and Surface to Air Missiles. The ship is fitted with a modern Surveillance Radar which provides target data to the gunnery weapon systems of the ship.

The ship’s Anti-Submarine Warfare capabilities are provided by the indigenously developed Rocket Launchers, Torpedo Launchers and ASW helicopters.

The ship is equipped to fight under Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) warfare conditions,” read an official statement by the Ministry of Defence.

“A unique feature of this ship is the high level of indigenisation of approximately 75 per cent incorporated in the production, accentuating our national objective of ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat’. Some of the major indigenised equipment/system onboard Mormugao include Surface to Surface and Surface to Air Missiles, Torpedo Tubes and Launchers, Anti-Submarine Rocket Launchers, Super Rapid Gun Mount besides, Combat Management System, Integrated Platform Management System, Automated Power Management System, Foldable Hangar Doors, Helo Traversing system, Close-in Weapon System and Bow mounted SONAR. Major OEMs as well as small MSMEs such as BEL, L&T, Godrej, Marine Electrical Brahmos, Technico, Kineco, Jeet & Jeet, Sushma Marine, Techno Process, etc. have all contributed in making of the mighty Mormugao,” the statement added.

With a clear focus on indigenisation and self-reliance, 42 out of the 44 ships and submarines under construction are being built in Indian Shipyards, thus further enhancing our efforts towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

In addition, AoN has been accorded for 55 ships and submarines which will all be constructed in Indian Shipyards,” the statement noted further.

Remarks by Maharashtra Governor B.S. Koshyari on Shivaji Maharaj and the simmering border row with Karnataka are expected to dominate the winter session of state legislature beginning in Nagpur from Monday.

The opposition is also expected to target the Eknath Shinde-led government on shifting of mega projects like Foxconn to Gujarat, according to political observers.

Koshyari recently said that Shivaji Maharaj was a hero of the past, while BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed the Maratha warrior king sought mercy from the Mughal empire.

Their remarks caused state-wide protests. In a show of strength, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) constituents Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray group), NCP, Congress, and other parties took out a massive Halla Bol morcha in Mumbai on Saturday against the Eknath Shinde-BJP alliance government demanding Koshyari’s removal.

The three-party coalition succeeded in putting up a united face during the march and sought to send out a message that it had regrouped to counter the ruling alliance.

With the Samajwadi Party, Communist Party of India, Peasants and Workers Party, Janata Dal and other smaller opposition parties actively participating in the march, the MVA is planning to put up a broad opposition coalition against the state government.

Leader of opposition in the state assembly, Ajit Pawar, has demanded that Karnataka and Maharashtra chief ministers’ recent talks with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the border dispute between the two states be made public.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that a proposal pertaining to the Karnataka-Maharashtra border row will be passed in the winter session. The state government is expected to table 11 bills during the session, expected to last till December 30.

Ajit Pawar said the state government should allocate sufficient time for discussion on these bills and not pass them in haste.

The government will table the Maharashtra Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti (third amendment) Bill 2022, which proposes to increase the number of members in the zilla parishads and panchayat samitis.

It will also table the Maharashtra State Agriculture Produce (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2022 to enable the farmers to contest the elections of the Agriculture Produce Market Committees.

The government will introduce the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (second amendment) Bill 2022 to revise the capital value of the land and buildings. It will also move a bill proposing a temporary hike in the state contingency fund. Around 7,000 police personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth passage of the winter session.

Security at the Vidhan Bhavan, where the two Houses of the legislature meet, has been beefed up. Security at ‘Ramgiri’ and ‘Devgiri’, the official residences of the CM and the Deputy CM respectively, has also been tightened.

Around 70 morchas are expected to be taken out by various political and social organisations during the session.
