NCP writes to Maha DGP and demands withdrawal of vehicles procured under Nirbhaya Fund

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has written to the Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) demanding “immediate withdrawal of vehicles procured under Nirbhaya fund” after several media reports alleged that several vehicles procured by the Mumbai Police to be used for fighting crimes against women, were instead being used as escort vehicles for legislators of the ruling Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.

“NCP demands the immediate withdrawal of the said vehicles deployed for MLAs’ security and to be sent back to the Nirbhaya Squad,” the letter said.

Earlier, Uddhav camp Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi alleged that several vehicles procured by the Mumbai Police under the Nirbhaya Fund, were used being used by MPs and MLAs of the ruling Eknath Shinde-led Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena faction, which is part of the ruling coalition in the Maharashtra government.

The letter from the NCP read, “It has been widely reported that the Maharashtra Home department has diverted almost 40 vehicles procured under the Nirbhaya Fund for escorting MLAs of Shinde Faction.”

“This decision of the Government is being criticised by the citizens of the state and is highly condemnable as the basic premise of the entire Nirbhaya scheme stands defeated,” it said.

“Home Ministry has granted Y+ security to all MLAs of the Shinde faction which itself seems like a move to accord VIP status to MLAs more than anything else. It is shameful how these MLAs have accepted these vehicles and nobody seems to be bothered or willing to voluntarily withdraw the said vehicles after it has come to light that these vehicles were procured for the protection of women,” the NCP said in the letter.

It added the Nirbhaya fund was created to enable the police machinery to effectively deal with issues relating to the safety of the women in the state.

Diverting vehicles meant for woman’s safety and pressing them into the service for protecting MLAs supporting the Government is clearly violative of the Nirbhaya Scheme and the Government is duty-bound to correct the wrong which has been committed purely under political pressure.

NCP demands the immediate withdrawal of the said vehicles deployed for MLAs’ security and to be sent back to the Nirbhaya Squad, the NCP said.

The Nirbhaya fund is a corpus set by the Centre in 2013 for state governments to implement schemes for the safety of women.

Foreign investors have bought domestic stocks and bonds for 2 consecutive months due to expectations for the US Fed to scale back the pace of its interest rate hikes and higher sales performance of major companies.

Applying the won/dollar rate (1,318.8 won) as of the end of November, it is about 3.6135 trillion won.

The net inflow means that money that came into the Korean stock and bond market was more than the money that came out. Following October (USD 2.77 billion), net inflow continued for the second month.

By type of securities, the net inflow of foreigners’ stock investment was $2.1 billion in November. Foreign stock investment recorded a net inflow of USD 3.02 billion in August and a net outflow of USD 1.65 billion in September.

After registering a thumping victory in the north-western state Gujarat, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bhupendra Patel will take oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for a second consecutive time in Gandhinagar on Monday. Born on July 15, 1962, in Ahmedabad, Patel holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Government Polytechnic, Ahmedabad. He is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He is also an active member of Pandit Deendayal Library managed by RSS at Memnagar.

Beginning his political journey as a member of Memnagar municipality, Patel got elected as MLA from Ghatlodia constituency (Ahmedabad) in the 2017 Gujarat assembly elections. He was sworn in as the 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat on September 13, 2021. He was first elected as BJP legislative party leader on September 12, 2021. Breaking his own record, Patel once again won from Ghatlodia constituency by a staggering margin of 1,91,000 votes in the 2022 election.

Patel has vast experience in administration, having served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and as a Corporator for Thaltej ward from 2010 to 2015. He began his political career in 1995 when he was appointed as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Memnagar municipality. He served the municipality for over a decade, becoming Chairman of the local body during 1999-2000 and 2004-2006. He also served as the Vice Chairman of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation School Board between 2008 and 2010.

Later on, he served as a Corporator from Thaltej ward from 2010 to 2015. During this tenure, he served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). In 2015, he was appointed as the chairman of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA).

In 2017, Patel became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time, by winning the election from Ghatlodia constituency with a wide margin of 1,17,000 votes. BJP swept the Gujarat Assembly election winning a whopping 156 seats, which is the highest number of seats any party has won after the formation of the state in the year 1960.

The BJP’s seventh consecutive Assembly poll win in Gujarat is its biggest since the founding of this state in 1960. The BJP bagged 156 seats in the 182-member Assembly, its highest-ever poll tally in the state.

The opposition Congress could manage only 17 seats while Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party had to be content with just 5 seats. Three seats went to Independent candidates while the Samajwadi Party (SP) won a lone seat in the state.

The BJP, which has won its seventh straight election in Gujarat, not only improved its own best record of 127 seats in 2002– the first election with Narendra Modi as Chief Minister — but the Congress’ tally of 149 seats in 1985.

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Monday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on his recent statement on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and said that he couldn’t even imagine insulting the famous Maratha warrior.

“Some people have taken a small part of my speech at the University out of context,” read the letter.

He also outlined the context of his words and noted, “I told the students that when we were students, some students considered Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru ji, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, etc. as role models. It is natural that the youth of the present generation will need role models to follow. Talking about Maharashtra, I said that in today’s context, good examples can be from Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar to Nitin Gadkari.”

“As far as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is concerned, he is not only the pride of Maharashtra but the pride of the whole country. The meaning is not to insult the great men of the past. It was not even a matter of comparison,” the letter added.

“Even if I accidentally make a mistake somewhere, then I will immediately apologize. I do not hesitate to do so. These people have set an example of courage and sacrifice, insulting personalities like Maharana Pratap, Shri Guru Gobind Singh and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj cannot be imagined even in dreams,” noted the letter.

The letter came after his remarks stoked controversy for calling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj an ‘old idol’.

Addressing a function at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad on November 19, his statements triggered furore.

The statements had drawn flak from the state’s opposition and the descendants of Shivaji Maharaj.

Earlier on November 24, Rajyasabha MP Udayanraje Bhonsle, who is also a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others and demanded to sack Koshyari.

The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notice to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police on the plea of conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar’s wife Leena Maria Paulose in a Rs 200 crore extortion case.

Sukesh Chandrashekhar, Leena Maria Paulose and others are currently in judicial custody since last year in the case for allegedly duping Aditi Singh, wife of the former promoter of Ranbaxy, Shivinder Singh, of Rs 200 crore.

Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma on Monday asked Delhi Police to file a status report in the matter and slated the matter for further hearing on February 2, 2023.

Recently Delhi Police in the present case arrested Mumbail-based Pinky Irani said to be a close aide of Chandrashekhar and introduced him to Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez.

According to the EOW, the accused Pinky Irani used to portray him (Sukesh) to be a business tycoon and the accused used to be instrumental to facilitate certain Bollywood personalities to contact with main accused Sukesh Chandrasekhar.

It is also in the allegations that accused Pinky Irani has been instrumental in disposing off the amount of money extorted from the complainant and other sources.

Previously, bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez also recorded her statement in the court under Section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) saying she wanted to give some important information in the Rs 200 crore fraud case involving conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar.

The Delhi Police Economic Offence Wing (EOW) in 2021 filed a chargesheet naming 14 accused including Conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, his Wife Leena Maria Paul and others. The Chargesheet was filed under various sections of IPC and provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

According to the EOW, Leena, Sukesh with others used Hawala routes, creating Shell companies to park the money earned from proceeds of crime. Delhi Police’s EOW had registered an FIR against Chandrasekhar for allegedly duping the spouses of former promoters of Ranbaxy, Shivinder Singh, and Malvinder Singh, of Rs 200 crores besides ongoing investigations against him in several cases across the country.

According to the Prosecution, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police extended its investigation into the case related to extortion of over Rs 200 crore, by Rohini jail inmate Sukesh Chandrasekar for allegedly duping wives of former Religare promoters Malvinder and Shivinder Singh, who are currently in Tihar jail.

Investigations revealed that the accused Sukesh Chandrasekar had duped Shivinder’s wife Aditi Singh and Malvinder’s wife Japna Singh worth over several crores of rupees.

The women claimed that they have paid crores of rupees to the conman to secure bail for their husbands and ensure their safety, posing as an officer from the Union Law Ministry. Chandrasekhar and his associates allegedly took money from Aditi after posing as government officials and promising to get bail for her husband.

As per reports, Chandrasekhar persuaded Aditi to transfer money by impersonating a central government official over a spoof call while he was lodged in Rohini jail and promised to manage bail for her husband.

Both Chandrasekhar and his actor wife Leena Maria Paul were arrested by the Delhi Police in September last year for their alleged role in the duping case.

Bombay High Court on Monday granted bail to former Home Minister of Maharashtra Anil Deshmukh in a corruption case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The court has granted bail to the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on a surety amount of Rs 1 lakh.

He is also required to submit his passport in court.

On the court’s decision, Deshmukh’s lawyer, advocate Aniket Nikam said that they argued for his bail on the grounds of his deteriorating health and had also produced his health records before the Court. “We argued on health grounds. His health was deteriorating and we produced his health records before the court… CBI said that they would go to the higher court against this order, the court allowed them and in that context, it stayed the order for 10 days,” Advocate Aniket Nikam said.

Earlier, the CBI had opposed Deshmukh’s bail plea after he moved the Bombay High Court on October 26 for bail in connection with the case after a special CBI court rejected Deshmukh’s bail plea on October 21.

Rejecting the bail application of Anil Deshmukh, the CBI court had previously said that in this case, the statement of public witness Sachin Waze has been recorded by the CBI during the hearing of the bail application. “It is clear from the statements of the witnesses that Anil Deshmukh is the main conspirator in this whole case. The charges against him are very serious. In such a situation, if he is granted bail, he can influence the case and the witnesses,” the CBI court had said.

Deshmukh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in November 2021, which stated that he had misused his position as state home minister and collected Rs 4.70 crore from various bars in Mumbai through some police officers.

According to the ED, Deshmukh had misused his position as state home minister and collected Rs 4.70 crore from various bars in Mumbai through some police of officers.

Earlier on October 11, the Supreme Court refused to cancel the bail granted to the former home minister in the money laundering case lodged against him by Enforcement Directorate (ED). On October 4, the Bombay High Court had granted bail to Deshmukh in a money laundering case being investigated by the ED.
