Most of the people in India vote for money meat and alcohol

During election days my maidservant used to take frequent leaves, when asked she said today so the party leader visited our area and gave us packets. During this season several leaders give us gifts and money, this is the only time we earn without slogging. Though I was not at all surprised, across Mumbai suburban and slums money is distributed on a large scale. The one who pays handsome votes goes to him. A poor person knows only the needs but not the importance of voting or choosing wisely. For them, voting is a seasonal earning tool.

People have started to accept and even in certain cases demand money or other favours. But it is also to be noted that voters accept money from all the parties contesting the elections and vote for the party of their liking. People started accepting money because they believe that corrupt politicians are pocketing money that is supposed to have been spent on welfare projects increasing their quality of life. And politicians who win elections by distributing money or other favours believe that they have the right to loot funds meant for schemes and people have lost their right to question them since they have accepted the money. This essentially leads to a vicious circle which is now taking a toll on our political system.

In our nation, even politicians are traded. Their ability to perform is zero but their political price is in crores. Countries where politicians are sold, ideologies are mocked, votes are manipulated, anything is possible. The only aim is to get the power. The politicians act like they are suffering from retrograde amnesia once the election results are declared. Turning their faces away from those voters who were initially called the golden buddies and the rulers of democracy during the campaign days. It is now a regular and common phenomenon all across the nation.

Politicians do nothing as the voters expect them to do. Not even those sublime promises enlisted in the election manifesto. After the end of 5 years of reigning, a couple of roads and bus stops decorated with huge flexes with the name of the respective MLA or MP are probably the only leftovers. Even though the government frames new plans and schemes, they won’t reach the citizens as expected since we have politicians engaged only in filling their own pockets. People also know the election is the only time when one can get what they want.

A day before Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao launched his national party, a video of a leader distributing whiskey and chicken went viral. In the video, shared by news agency ANI, Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader Rajanala Srihari was seen handing out liquor bottles and live chicken to locals in Warangal. With a big cut-out of KCR on the transport vehicle stacked with the freebies, the leader can be seen personally handing it out to people who had gathered in a long queue. He also posed for pictures. With an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, KCR is set to announce his national party on Dussehra. He is said to have discussed the roadmap for the launch of the national party.

There are many states like Gujarat, Manipur and Nagaland alcohol is prohibited and banned but during elections, alcohol plays a vital role. The politicians break the rules while distributing liquor.  Alcohol prohibition has been a major promise by most participating political parties. But the implementation is always forbidden by the lawmakers during elections to woo the voters.

A large portion of politicians completely depend on the money earned through politics as they don’t have any other source of income and therefore till the time, until they become an MP or MLA and start receiving a salary, they tend to adopt unfair means to acquire wealth. Since we have democracy, people are the ones who should be blamed for this as democracy is by the people.

Nationalist Congress Party leader Chhagan Bhujbal made a controversial statement and questioned to ‘displaying goddess Saraswati’s portrait in schools’ on Tuesday at Mumbai.

Bhujbal said, “why do we display goddess Saraswati’s portrait in schools? instead of displaying our social reformer’s portrait who gave us the right to education. Social reformers like Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, Savitribai Phule, Karmaveer Bhaurao patil and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar gave us the Right to Education and Goddess Saraswati gave education to only 3% of people.”

Maharashtra’s ex-Minister’s statement created a controversy in Maharashtra. A lot of criticism has been made at different stages after Bhujabals’s statement. As well as, Some political leaders support Bhujbal and agreed with his statement.

Minister of Forests, Cultural Affairs and Fisheries of Maharashtra Sudhir Mungantiwar told Afternoon Voice, “we don’t have to take them seriously as they lost their power. Because of losing chairs, the opposition are making silly statements.”

BJP leader Bhalchandra Shirsath said, “we are not opposed to displaying a picture of social reformers but Opposing Hindu God and Goddesses pictures is a pseudo secularism and we are against of that.”

Spokesperson of Nationalist Congress Party Ravikant Varape supports Bhujbal and stated, “we the bahujan people get education because of Mahatma Phule, Savitribai Phule, Shahu Maharaj and Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil. Goddess Saraswati is known as the Symbol of Knowledge, but for us these Social reformers are Symbol of Knowledge.”

“BJP knows they are facing lot of criticism because of inflation and unemployment. To make peoples attraction they are protesting against this statement.” He further said.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Dhananjay Shinde took jibe at both Bhujbal and the BJP and told us, “everyone has a right to speech but we should not get stuck in the politics of statues and portraits. Rather, we should follow the ideologies of those social reformers. Does Bhujbal himself follow the paths of these social reformers? Who did the Maharashtra Sadan scam and Telagi scam?”

“BJP is protesting against the statement but they themselves are privatizing the education sector.” He further said.

On Thursday, Bhaujabal stuck to his statement and said, “I have the right to express my views. Social reformers opened the doors of education for us by facing many difficulties. Why should we not worship those who fought to give education to us?”

Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took a jibe at Chagan Bhujabal and said, “who doesn’t believe in Indian culture and Hindutva. Only that person made such a statement. Our government will never remove portraits of goddess Saraswati from schools.”

In the pre-independence era, women and people from the Lower coast didn’t have the right to be educated. Social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule opened the first school for women in Bhidewada in Pune. He taught his wife Savitribai Phule, and then Savitribai became the first women teacher in the country. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil opened several schools for the Bahujan people who don’t have a right to education. After Independence, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar gave the right to education to every Indian by writing the constitution.

A special court here on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut till October 10 in connection with the Patra Chawl land scam case.

Earlier on September 19, a Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court had extended the judicial custody of the Shiv Sena MP by 14 days in connection with the Patra Chawl land scam case.

Raut was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on August 1 in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of the Patra Chawl in suburban Goregaon.

After being in the ED’s custody initially, the Shiv Sena leader was sent to judicial custody for 14 days on August 8. On 22 August, a special PMLA court extended Raut’s custody till September 5 which was further extended till September 19. ED officials raided the Shiv Sena leader’s home on July 31, and after detaining and questioning him for several hours and arrested him on August 1.

On June 28 this year, Sanjay Raut was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the prevention of the money laundering case pertaining to the Rupees 1,034 crore Patra Chawl land scam. Back in August, the wife of Shiv Sena MP was also summoned by the agency in connection with the Patra Chawl land case.

The MP’s wife Varsha Raut was summoned by the central agency after the ED officials raided the Shiv Sena leader’s home and after detaining and questioning him (Sanjay Raut) for several hours, arrested him. Raut is a close aide of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

According to sources, ED officials seized Rs 11.50 lakhs unaccounted cash from his residence during the raids. Soon after the ED officials detained him in connection with the Patra Chawl land scam case, the Shiv Sena leader said that he “won’t be cowed down”.

Raut is being probed in connection with the re-development of Mumbai’s Patra Chawl. In April this year, the ED had attached immovable properties worth Rs 11.15 crore, including a flat at Dadar, held by Sanjay Raut’s wife Varsha and eight land parcels at Kihim near Alibag, jointly held by the latter with Swapna Patkar.

Dy CM Devendra Fadnavis aligns with centre’s ban on PFI and said “action will be taken against the supporters”

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday aligned with the Centre’s ban on PFI and said that action will be taken against PFI supporters.

“The ban on PFI is absolutely correct, if Naxalites are helping PFI.. then Naxalites will only help their supporters, helping Naxalites, or like Naxalites against the system, against the public, against the common people. PFI was doing conspiracies, so they have been banned, action will be taken against those who support them,” said Fadnavis.

He also stressed on security details during the upcoming festivities so that no fringe elements disrupt any ongoing celebrations. “Keeping in mind the possibility that PFI-supported organizations can indirectly disrupt important programs like Dasara Melava and Nagpur’s Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Diwas, we are preparing.. Those who are against democracy, such elements can enter anywhere and spread chaos, so the organizers should be careful, the Home Department is also alert on this,” he added.

The Union home ministry declared the Popular Front of India (PFI), and its associates or affiliates or fronts, as an unlawful association with immediate effect for five years, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. “PFI and its associates or affiliates or fronts operate openly as a socio-economic, educational and political organization but, they have been pursuing a secret agenda to radicalise a particular section of the society working towards undermining the concept of democracy and show sheer disrespect towards the constitutional authority and constitutional set up of the country,” said the government notification.

The notification said PFI and its associates or affiliates or fronts have been indulging in unlawful activities, which are prejudicial to the integrity, sovereignty and security of the country and have the potential to disturb public peace and communal harmony of the country and support militancy in the country.

It further said some of the PFI’s founding members are the leaders of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and PFI has linkages with Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), both of which are proscribed organisations.

There had been a number of instances of international linkages of PFI with global terrorist groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS); the PFI and its associates or affiliates or fronts have been working covertly to increase the radicalization of one community by promoting a sense of insecurity in the country, which is substantiated by the fact that some PFI cadres have joined international terrorist organisations, said the notification.

“The Central Government, having regard to the above circumstances, is of the firm opinion that it is necessary to declare the PFI and its associates or affiliates or fronts as an unlawful association with immediate effect, and accordingly, in the exercise of the powers conferred by the proviso to sub-section (3) of section 3 of the said Act, the Central Government hereby directs that this notification shall, subject to any order that may be made under section 4 of the said Act, have effect for a period of five years from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette,” it said.

The National Investigation Agency, Enforcement Directorate and the state police forces jointly coordinated searches at the houses and offices of the PFI leaders and members across India.

Searches were conducted at 93 locations in 15 states of India in which over 100 activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) were arrested.

The states where the raids were conducted included Andhra Pradesh (4 places), Telangana (1), Delhi (19), Kerala (11), Karnataka (8), Tamil Nadu (3), Uttar Pradesh (1), Rajasthan (2), Hyderabad (5), Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, West Bengal, Bihar and Manipur. The searches were conducted in connection with five cases registered by the NIA following “continued inputs and evidence” that the PFI leaders and cadres were involved in the funding of terrorism and terrorist activities, organising training camps for providing armed training and radicalising people to join banned organisations.

A large number of criminal cases were registered in different states over the last few years against the PFI and its leaders and members for their involvement in many violent acts.

Import duty on platinum has gone upto 15.4 per cent from 10.75

India has raised total import duty on platinum to 15.4 per cent from 10.75 per cent, the government said in a notification on Monday, seeking to bring parity in import duty structure between gold and platinum.

The government in July had increased the import duty on gold to 15 per cent but kept the tax on platinum imports unchanged at 10.75 per cent.

However, the usage of platinum and palladium in the manufacture of precious metal chemicals, compounds (noble metal compounds and solutions) and catalytic converters will continue at basic customs duty of 7.5 per cent subject to import of goods at concessional rate of duty (IGCR).

Rhodium will also continue with basic custom duty (BCD) of 2.5 per cent.

On July 1 this year, a hike was announced in the custom duty on gold from 7.5 per cent to 12.5 per cent. Gold also attracts a 2.5 per cent agriculture infrastructure development cess (AIDC), taking the total import duty to 15 per cent.

However, at this time, the import duty was kept unchanged at 10.75 per cent. It is being presumed that the increase in duty on platinum is to plug a loophole which is helping bullion importers to make record profits.

There was a difference of import duty between gold and platinum in July. It is believed that some bullion importers are importing refined gold disguised as platinum alloy.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday would pronounce order on a bail application filed by former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh in an alleged money laundering case.

Justice N J Jamadar had reserved the order last week after the conclusion of the arguments.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed the HC to hear and decide the NCP leader’s plea expeditiously as it was pending for six months.

His lawyers Vikram Chaudhari and Aniket Nikam argued that considering his age (72), health and the fact that he had no criminal antecedents he should be granted bail.

Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate (ED), opposed the application arguing that Deshmukh did not suffer from any ailments that cannot be treated at jail hospital.

Arrested by the ED in November 2021, Deshmukh is now in judicial custody.

The ED booked him after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a corruption case against him following allegations made by former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh.

The ED claimed that Deshmukh misused his official position and collected Rs 4.7 crore from various bars and restaurants in Mumbai.

The ill-gotten money was channelled to Nagpur-based Shri Sai Shikshan Sansthan, an educational trust controlled by his family, it alleged.
