Public transport system in Mumbai must be integrated: CM

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the public transport system in the country’s financial capital must be integrated to turn it into a smart city and an international financial hub.

“If Mumbai has to become a smart city and international financial hub, its public transport should be smart,” Fadnavis said.

He was speaking at an event where the Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of two Metro corridors– Andheri East-Dahisar East and Dahisar-DN Nagar.

Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Santosh Gangwar, RPI chief Ramdas Athawle, Governor Vidyasagar Rao, state planning body MMRDA commissioner UPS Madan were also present.

“Today nearly one crore population of Mumbai is using the public transport. In the last 10 years, due to the lack of transport facilities, use of private vehicles increased by 10 per cent, so the congestion increased….Our government intends to create a strong network of public transport,” Fadnavis said.

The government intends to create a Metro network of 108 km by 2019, he said. “Apart from Metro, we have also got the MUTP phase 3 for increasing the suburban railway network, which has been sanctioned by the Centre. We are also creating elevated corridors and all these will be integrated,” he said.

The Chief Minister also said the Metros, monorails, railways, coastal road and bus transport will all be integrated in a way that commutation in Mumbai and the surrounding Mumbai Metropolitan Region will be hassle-free and can be done in one hour between two points.

A single-ticket system would be introduced, he said.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar answers people’s queries on Facebook just a few hours before 1st phase polling

NitishWith just a few hours left for first phase of polling for Bihar Assembly elections, Chief Minister and Janata Dal United supremo Nitish Kumar on Sunday evening answered people’s queries on Facebook.

With Nitish being the face of the JDU-Rashtriya Janata Dal-Congress led Mahagathbandhan, he is leaving no stone unturned to woo the voters of Bihar.

While answering a question Nitish said, “The country is governed by the Constitution which has made provisions for affirmative action on the basis of caste. This system has been put together with great care and after great deliberation. In my view, in the present context, this system is apt. But, I am all for inclusive development and the upliftment of those who are economically challenged.”

The JDU supremo also shared the Mahagathbandhan’s seven mantra for Bihar’s development. Nitish said his top priority will be women empowerment, employment generation for youth, complete electrcity, water availability and sanitation in the state.

When asked about his development agenda for the state, Kumar said, “I have repeated time and again, I am driven by my idea of development with justice and the agenda is to make sure that last 10 year of development continues. Bihar has only one growth model, “Development with justice”.

Talking about a Muslim man being killed in Dadri area of Uttar Pradesh following rumours that his family had consumed beef, the Bihar Chief Minister said, “Such event should never happen in our country. I hope all concerned and those who are responsible for enforcing the rule of law will do everything possible to ensure justice to the aggrieved parties.”

“My track record on handling corruption in my government has been in the public domain. I continue to remain fully committed to do everything that is possible to ensure a corruption free government at all levels,” he said.

Earlier this week, Nitish had released the governance agenda of the Mahagathbandhan. He has promised Rs 500 crore venture capital fund for skill development and self employment of the youth. Free WiFi will be provided in all the universities of Bihar.

The voting for the 243-member Bihar Assembly will be on October 12, 16, 28, November 1 and 5. The counting of votes will be on November 8.

Dynastic forces stand no chance before merit of Modi: Arun Jaitley

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a “role model of leadership” and dynastic politics stands no chance to succeed against him as he represents merit, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said, describing rise of the top BJP leader as “stunning and incredible”.

“He is a fast learner. He learns something new daily. His biggest strength in politics is that he is an excellent communicator and orator. All this has created a huge charisma around his personality,” says Jaitley, who has worked with Modi for long.

In an article on the Prime Minister in a special issue of Marathi Daily ‘Tarun Bharat’, an RSS mouthpiece, his close associate writes that Modi is being targeted by dynastic forces because of his success.

“And it is clear that the politics of dynasty stands no chance because Modi represents merit which is the buzzword in today’s world and politics,” Jaitley says in the article in which he insists that the struggle being witnessed in Indian politics today was between merit and dynastic politics.

The issue, which is in a magazine form, focuses on the leadership of Modi and is titled ‘Mahanayak’, will be out on Tuesday.

Union ministers Nitin Gadkari, Suresh Prabhu, Manohar Parrikar, Smriti Irani, Narendra Singh Tomar, Harsh Vardhan and Prakash Javadekar have also contributed to the special issue.

Apparently underlining at the struggle Modi has undergone in the last few years, Jaitley says that the Prime Minister has learnt a lot during that time.

Another characteristic of the Prime Minister is his “single mindedness”, Jaitley says, adding that once something has been decided, Modi pursues it with vigour to ensure an early outcome.

Modi gives importance to accountability, he said.

The Finance Minister says that Modi’s another characteristic was the way he communicates.

“Traditionally, leaders use media to reach out to people, however, Modi doesn’t do like it. He reaches out to the people directly,” he said.

Post Dadri lynching incident, Hindus organise Muslim girls’ wedding in Bishada

Shaken by the beef lynching episode, the troubled Bishada village in the district is agog with activity on Saturday with Hindus joining their Muslim brethren in making preparations for the wedding of two girls belonging to the minority community.

Bishada resident Hakeem, who till a few days ago was toying with the idea of shifting the wedding venue outside the village in the wake of the beef rumours that saw a man being brutally beaten to death, is now all smiles as villagers have ensured security for the family celebrating the marriage today.

Hindu families are all set to welcome the bridegroom and their families and are busy making preparations for food and tent.

Hakeem was earlier planning to shift the marriage venue out of the village due to the tense situation in the village after 50-year-old Iqlakh was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son Danish was critically injured by a mob which barged into their house on the night of September 28 following rumours that the family had consumed beef.

However, after Hindu families extended support he decided against doing so.

SDM RK Singh said situation in Bishada is slowly returning to normalcy.

Meanwhile the victim’s son Danish was yesterday shifted to Army’s Research and Referral (R&R) hospital in the national capital.

The 22-year-old was moved from Noida’s Kailash Hospital, where he was being treated for the past 12 days.

Dr Anil Gurnani of Kailash Hospital had said that Danish has recovered well and is able to walk and move about. He is being essentially shifted for rest and rehabilitation.

“He was able to recognise (people) and also walk with support. He has eaten food as prescribed by doctors,” said Irfan, son of Iqlakh’s elder brother, Jamil.

Earlier state minister Azam Khan had sent ambulance for shifting Danish to a Ghaziabad hospital but his family had declined to shift due to his critical condition.

Policy decision on combat role for women soon: Manohar Parrikar

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday said that his ministry was examining how a combat role can be assigned to the women in the armed forces, in line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on gender sensitivity.

“My ministry is working out (how) to assign combat role for women in the armed forces, and a policy decision will soon be made,” Parrikar said, addressing a gathering of retired army officers at Welingkar Institute of Management.

Earlier this week, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha had said the Indian Air Force had moved a proposal to induct women as fighter aircraft pilots.

“It is extremely unfortunate that our Prime Minister’s initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Selfie With Daughter are not being taken seriously by a few people, especially so-called secular minded people,” Parrikar said.

“When our PM emphasises Selfie with Daughter, it does not only address the issue of gender equality but also the disorder of gender insensitivity prevailing in the current form of society in a larger context,” he said.

Parrikar was in the city to pay tribute to late Lt Dilip Gupte on his 50th death anniversary. Gupte died at a young age of 23 in Operation Jura Bridge on October 11, 1965 during the Indo-Pak war.

Praising the people of Maharashtra for their contribution to the nation, Parrikar said, “The people who draw inspiration from the legendary Shivaji Maharaj can never be behind (in serving the country) and this is why a large number of armymen and officers hail from Kolhapur, Satara, Karad, etc. (in the state).”

On a personal note, Parrikar said even after entering politics he never thought that he, “a peace-loving person by nature”, would become the defence minister, but “like everyone, I too had no control over my destiny.”

“Every Goan is a peace-loving person. If a Goan indulges in skirmish, then there is a strong possibility that he may not be originally from Goa. But I am a true Goan and peace-loving person by nature. But my fate has brought me here as Defence Minister, which I am trying my best to deliver,’ he said.

Stop cultural ties with Pakistan

The decision of political parties like Shiv Sena, MNS to protest against inviting singers and players from Pakistan and to ban them from performing in our country, is not without merit and should be welcomed. While one would agree such ban on singers, writers etc. violates their freedom of expression, the issue is relevant.  Pakistan has refused to cooperate with us on terrorism and continues to be a safe haven for terrorists targeting India. There are open ceasefire violations across the border and unprovoked firing on our soldiers and civilians. The terrorists with the support of the Pakistani army have been aging a “proxy war” for decades in which our soldiers and security forces are being killed almost every day. Just a couple of days ago four jawans were killed after militants opened fire on an Army patrol in North Kashmir’s Hafruda forest.

Many are of the opinion that sports, entertainment and culture should not be mixed with politics. However, at present it is necessary to isolate Pakistan in every way (this had been stressed by none other than our Foreign Minister Mrs. Sushma Swaraj in her address at the UN Assembly a few days ago). Those wanting Pakistani singers, actors, sportsperson to perform in our nation, do not show any concern over the “mini-war” that has been thrust upon us by our neighbour. As far as sports with Pakistan is concerned, they have never played the game in true spirit. A match with them — be it hockey or cricket — is literally seen as a war, the ground being the battlefield!

Even while Ghulam Ali would entertain the organizers and others in an AC hall, killings would go unabated and there would be plans for more terror attacks on India.  Can you ever enjoy the “Ghazal” or a game at the cost of the lives of our own countrymen and brave jawans who defend the borders for our safety?

Pakistani artistes, being cultural ambassadors of their country, should openly condemn state-sponsored terrorism and must use their clout with those at the helm there, to cooperate with India in dismantling terror camps. These artistes must promote “unity, harmony and peace in the world”  and to begin with, ask Pakistani rulers to take earnest efforts to eliminate terrorism.

Incidentally, our government should muster the courage to isolate Pakistan as day in and day out, our jawans get killed for no reason and due to infiltration of terrorists aided by the Pakistani army. No diplomatic relations, no cultural and bilateral relations, no commerce and trade, no transport and no sports and entertainment too.  Cripple Pakistan economically at least and stop the so called talks for peace forever (let us not bother what the US or the UN will say or dictate!)

In the name of “peace talks”, for decades, all we have witnessed is the visit of Pakistan PM, certain dignitaries and officials, photo-ops with Indian officials, followed by a visit to Taj Mahal. In all such meetings, the decisions taken are only to have another round of meetings and talks at a later date. And in the meanwhile, there is only large scale engineering of terrorism and ceasefire violations across the borders. High time our PM and the government at the centre showed its “true action”—to begin with, start isolating “it” in every sphere. Meanwhile, it’s time for all our leaders, countrymen and the opposition leaders to remain firmly united against terrorism.

Shia LaBeouf charged with being drunk in public

LaBeoufShia LaBeouf, the actor famous for his starring role in The Transformers series, has been arrested and charged with being drunk in public in Texas.

The 29-year-old was taken into custody in Austin on Friday night, while out in the city’s Sixth Street entertainment district. LaBeouf was in the area for a music festival that is taking place this weekend, according to reports.

The actor, who rose to fame in the children’s TV show Even Stevens, was handcuffed and taken to the Travis county jail before being released on his own undertaking. Austin police posted a short statement that included the actor’s mugshot. LaBeouf’s publicist has not commented on the arrest.

Biopic on me will be a flop, says Amitabh Bachchan

AmitabhMegastar Amitabh Bachchan, who is celebrated his 73th birthday yesterday, said filmmakers should not attempt to make a biopic on him as it will be a ‘flop’.

With biopics becoming sort of a trend in contemporary Bollywood, Bachchan, when asked about the idea of a biopic made on his life, said, “I don’t think a film should be made on me. I am not in that trend (biopic). I don’t think I am capable of that. It will be a flop.”

Interestingly, the “Sholay” star said he would rather be okay if someone makes a biopic on his father, writer and poet, Harivanshrai Bachchan.

“If someone wants to make a documentary on him, I am okay. But I don’t think personally I would make one on him,” he added.

Bachchan who has inspired a whole generation of actors said it is unfair to name anyone when he was asked which actor today can fill his place in the industry and has the ‘jazba’ (passion) like him.

“People have their own style. They do good work and inspire people in their own way. It is not fair to say who can take my place. I take inspiration from Dilip Kumar, Waheeda Rehman.

Today, the youngsters look upto Salman, Shah Rukh, Aamir, Ranbir, Hritik Roshan,” he said.

Not Here to Become a Fashion Icon: Athiya

Athiya-ShettyActress Athiya Shetty said that she does not see herself as the next fashionista of Bollywood.

Athiya made her debut in Bollywood with Salman Khan’s Hero.

The actress walked the ramp for designer duo Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna on the fourth day of the Amazon India Fashion Week Spring/Summer ’16.

“I am not here to become a fashion icon. Whatever I wear comes naturally to me. I don’t want to make a statement when it comes to fashion. I am very simple and minimalistic when it comes to dressing up in my personal life,” said Athiya.

“Walking the ramp was a part of growing up for me. I obviously wanted to be a part of this. I always liked dressing up, make-up and hair. For me it is a dream come true and I feel very excited when I have to walk the ramp. I am a big fan of Sabyasachi (Mukherjee) and I would definitely love to walk the ramp for him some day,” she said.

Athiya also said that Sonam Kapoor is the real fashion icon.

“Sonam is a fashion icon. She is amazing when it comes to experimenting with her looks, clothes, and always ends up doing an amazing job. She has created a position for her own,” said Athiya.
