UP being run by hooligans

People of Uttar Pradesh vote at the caucuses just as the rest of India but obviously they are blind because it’s a state run by illiterate ruffians. What makes them vote for leaders like former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadhav who, issues a statement “Mardon se ye chothi motti galityan hoti raheti hain” when rapes occur. Now his son Akhilesh Yadav is the CM of UP. Every other day we hear about rape cases occurring in the state and more in a village called Badaun. There are so many that we’ve lost count. In a stretch of a fortnight four girls had hanged themselves. There is a dire need for the Centre to ensure that they make the state police more vigilant.

When Lokayukta justice (retd) NK Mehrotra launched a probe in December against Mining Minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati last year after one Om Shankar Dwivedi filed a 1,727-page complaint giving details of ill-gotten property belonging to the State Mining Minister in which the department issued as many as 18 licenses in forest area without the mandatory environmental clearance and said that since the order came from the minister, the contractors were not stopped from carrying out illegal mining.

Prajapati, including his kin an influential minister in the Samajwadi Party government of Akhilesh Yadav, is accused of allegedly amassing property worth Rs 900 crore by misusing his office and has usurped illegally out of a 2200-acre mining area in Jalaun district, wherein the mining department allotted 1,600 acre to one RC Mishra, known to be a close associate of the mining minister. The Lokayukta said that “the fake companies floated by the minister and members of the syndicate are being closed (down) after I started the inquiry. Even money is being withdrawn from bank accounts to escape charges.”

Justice Malhotra had already asked the minister’s wife and two sons to appear before him on January 8. When Nutan Thakur and her IPS officer husband Amitabh Thakur lodged a disproportionate assets case against the state mining minister with the Lokayukta they received a threat call asking them to stay away from the Lokayukta complaint against the minister. So Prajapati takes his case to Mulayam Singh who calls Thakur and tells him that he met his mother who said that he should take care of him. What shameless temerity! He would suffer from worst consequences if he did not mend his ways. He told him that whatever had happened in Jasrana, Firozabad, where Thakur had been assaulted by one of his relative and an MLA in 2006, much harsher things would happen if he didn’t ‘mend his ways’. Later, in May, complaints against Amitabh Thakur, were lodged with the UPSWC. (UP state women Commission) ‘Suddenly a rape charge has been slapped on him.’

The Thakur couple discovered that the two women who had lodged rape complaints against Amitabh with the UPSWC had not approached the police. The UPSWC — though claiming to have recorded the women’s statements — did not direct the police to register a case or send the women for medical examination, which is a mandatory step. The couple said there were reasons to believe the UPSWC and its members were helping those trying to implicate Amitabh in the rape case.

I don’t know if the minister knows how to count 900 crore, but a whole educational institution can be built for those illiterates or reforming those gangsters, if you add 500 crore, the (ISRO) would have sent another mission to Mars or Venus. To cheat your motherland and to think your family and kin will survive it is worse than killing. If and when facts are proven to be correct against Prajapati then they have blood on their hands. Maybe ISRO should make them a flying saucer and put the whole family on it so they disappear in Space.

Playing simple character in Bajrangi Bhaijaan was challenging: Salman Khan

Salman-KhanSuperstar Salman Khan, who has played action oriented roles in films like Kick, Dabangg and Wanted, said he found it hard to break his macho image in Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

“It was a difficult thing for me right now to play, after Dabangg, Wanted and other films. It was challenging to come back to play a simple character,” Salman said.

The 49-year-old actor, however, also said that Bajrangi Bhaijaan does have action to some extent.

“There is action and everything (in Bajrangi Bhaijaan) but it is simple and all-heart. We’ve shown a typical Hindustani character so that people get a feeling, ‘What a nice guy, bechara‘ (innocent). All the action films we do, they need to be backed with emotions. Otherwise, action is pointless,” he added.

Released on July 17, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, is co-produced by Salman Khan Films (SKF) with Rockline Venkatesh and is about the bond shared between a speech-impaired Pakistani girl, played by child artist Harshaali Malhotra, and an Indian who is a Hanumandevotee.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan, directed by Kabir Khan has surpassed the 100 crore mark in its opening weekend itself.

Hollywood has dominated Indian cinema: Irrfan Khan

Irfan-KhanInternationally acclaimed actor Irrfan Khan says Indian cinema is being ‘dominated’ by foreign films and this has affected the business of Bollywood films.

Hollywood films like Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World have proved their mettle at the box office in India earlier this year.

The actor, 48, who has starred in various hit foreign films like Slumdog Millionaire, The Amazing Spider-Man and Life of Pi, believes Bollywood films are not a competition for Hollywood but the picture is different in India.

“I’m working in both the industries as I’m enjoying my work on both sides. Hollywood demand different kind of skills. They have a different set of audience. So, as an actor it’s fortunate that I get chance to do different kind of work,” Irrfan, who was last seen inJurassic World, said.

“Both the industries have their own uniqueness. But Hollywood has a bigger reach and has its own universal language. It is more powerful. It has dominated our cinema. It can affect the business of Bollywood. But, our films are not affecting their business. Its Hollywood, which is affecting Indian cinema,” he added.

Starting his career in Bollywood with character roles in films like Salaam Bombay! and Drishti, Irrfan went on to carve out his own space on the silver screen by showing his versatility in acting though films like Haasil, Life in a… Metro and The Namesake. But he says roles that he has played up till now were not of his choice, as he was not offered romantic roles before Piku.

“People usually think of me as a serious actor, but roles that I have done so far were not of my choice. Whatever roles I was being offered, I chose my part from that.

“I was not offered such roles earlier. If given a choice I would have rather done comedy and romantic films earlier. But I don’t had a chance earlier. I don’t have a particular group of directors of my own. I don’t have any gang. Whatever roles come to me, I take them. I’m not much active socially,” Irrfan said.

Asked whether he would like to do another biopic film after his National Award-winning performance in Paan Singh Tomar, Irrfan said, “I would love to do more of them if the script is good because Paan Singh Tomar started this trend of biopics. We came out and started this trend in cinema and received success. We were recognised that way in Bollywood. So if something interesting like that comes then I would love to do it and I enjoy doing it.

‘Bangistan’ a poker face comedy: Riteish Deshmukh

RiteshActor Riteish Deshmukh, who plays one of the leading roles in ‘Bangistan’, says that the film is a poker face comedy.

“‘Housefull’, ‘Dhamaal’, ‘Masti’ were physical comedies having slapstick and loud humour but ‘Bangistan’ is poker face,” Riteish said.

“There are a lot of films where there are extraordinary reactions to ordinary situations but in this film, there are extraordinary situations so you have to be ordinary to get the humour out,” he added.

The story of ‘Bangistan’ revolves around two budding terrorists who decide to swap their religion in order to finish the other community. Directed by Karan Anshuman and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidwani, the film also features Pulkit Samrat.

Riteish is well-known for his comic timing and working with him was definitely an exciting thing for Pulkit.

“In ‘Bangistan’ my character is pretty interesting and I enjoyed playing the part. It is also the first time that I was getting an opportunity to act with Riteish, so I was very excited. The script was very nice and intelligently written. A serious issue has been portrayed in a funny manner in the film,” he said.

The movie is set to release on 31 July.

Loan waiver is not the only option for farmers

It is necessary to conduct a study about what prompts a farmer to avail credit for cultivation says Fadnavis.

farmersMaharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attacked the erstwhile Democratic Front government for the rising farmer suicides during the monsoon session of the state legislature. According to him, even though the Democratic Front government ruled the state for the past 15 years but they failed to address the problems faced by farmers. Fadnavis said that the opposition is raising the farmer’s issues now for gaining political mileage out of it. He also added that they were least bothered about the problems of farmers.

“Debt relief is not the only option for addressing the farmer’s issues. It is necessary to conduct a study about what prompts a farmer to avail credit for cultivation. Even though the Democratic government had waived of farmers debts in the year 2009 but how many of them derived benefit out of it. It has been observed that farmer suicides continued to rise. The former government was anti-farmer” said Fadnavis.

Fadnavis said that even though there is a widespread network of co-operative banks in Maharashtra but farmers are being denied crop loans. The CM also clarified that he never said that the government won’t waive farm loans. The opposition had attacked the state government over this issue. They had held demonstrations in various parts of the state in support of their demand for farm loan waiver.

Fadnavis said that farmers don’t benefit from the loan waiver schemes. Out of 60 lakh farmers only 35 lakhs received the benefit while the remaining 25 lakh farmers didn’t receive any benefit. After offering loan waiver to farmers they must take steps to ensure that they should not be in a position to apply for loan once again.

“It is necessary to provide credit to farmers who are debt ridden due to crop failure. Strict action will be taken against banks for failing to disburse crop loans to farmers” he added.

The state government is planning to set up a fodder depot to help farmers. There is a proposal to transfer 60 crores directly into the account of farmers. The government will construct fodder depot if the rainfall is deficient. Fadnavis said that the problems of farmers cannot be resolved merely by offering debt waiver to them and the situation needs to be monitored regularly. He said that efforts must be taken to increase agricultural productivity and farm credit.

Around 9614 farmers committed suicide during the period of 2009 to 2014. 25 lakh farmers didn’t receive any benefit from the farm loan waiver scheme. The democratic front government had offered financial assistance to money lending institutions instead of farmers. The state received 55 per cent rains from June 1 to July 20.

1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon’s cousin meets him in prison

Yakub-MemonA family member of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon, who is on a death row, on Monday met him at the high security Central Prison.

Yakub’s Cousin Usman Memon, accompanied by a local lawyer, arrived at the Central Prison in the afternoon where the convict is lodged.

His other family members, particularly his wife and daughter, were also expected to visit him, but they did not turn up.

Usman and lawyer Anil Gondane refused to talk to the media persons waiting outside the jail premises.

Memon’s curative petition, his last legal attempt to escape the gallows, is expected to come up for hearing before the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Memon, a key conspirator with Dawood Ibrahim in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, is one of ten convicts awarded death penalty by a special TADA court.

His death sentence was upheld by a Supreme Court bench on March 21, 2013.

Earlier, amid reports that Yakub will be hanged this month end, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had last week said his government would follow the directives of the Supreme Court on the issue.

“Whatever we do will be made public at an appropriate time,” Fadnavis had said.

If the execution is carried out, it will be the first in connection with the violence that rocked Mumbai resulting in the death of over 250 people in 1993.

Media reports had earlier said the execution will take place if Memon’s curative petition is rejected by the Supreme Court, after his appeals against the death sentence were rejected by the apex court and by President Pranab Mukherjee.

The Nagpur prison authorities had earlier evaded questions on whether they had any information on the possible date of hanging.

Asked if the prison has received the death warrant, Jail Superintendent Yogesh Desai pleaded ignorance stating “it is (something) at the government level.”

Prison officials had, however, said the jail is equipped with all the necessary facilities to carry out the execution.

HC rejects intervention plea to grant stay on Salman Khan’s appeal in Hit-and-run case

Salman (4)The Bombay High Court refused accept a plea to grant stay on an appeal filed by Bollywood actor Salman Khan against the five-year sentence awarded to him in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

A convict in a murder case, whose appeal has not been heard since 2009, had filed an intervention application seeking a stay on Salman Khan’s appeal.

He contended that the matters of celebrities were heard out-of-turn whereas those of other convicts like him were kept pending endlessly as a result of which they continued to languish in jails.

The convict has also filed a separate petition in the High Court making the same allegation about appeals of celebrities being heard urgently. He has prayed that his appeal may be heard expeditiously.

Justice A R Joshi refused to stay Salman’s appeal saying that both the sides in the case had consented for expeditious hearing of the matter. Moreover, the Judge said, in the petition filed by the convict (who has intervened), the High Court has not passed any judicial order.

The intervenor’s counsel, Aparna Vatkar, had sought a stay on Salman’s appeal saying it should not be heard until the petition filed by her client separately before another bench is decided by the High Court.

Salman’s lawyer Amit Desai, in a passing reference, said he also did not understand why the government was too eager to hear the actor’s appeal against conviction on an urgent basis.

He demanded that a Compact Disc (CD) of the proceedings recorded in the trial court should be handed over to the defence team so that they are able to argue to appeal effectively.

However, prosecutors Sandeep Shinde and Pradeep Gharat said no such CD of court proceedings was available and hence, it could not be given to the other side.

The court deferred the matter to July 27 for further hearing.
The 49-year-old actor, who is on bail, did not come to the court today. His sister, Alvira, was, however, present.

Salman was convicted by a sessions court on May 6 and sentenced to five years imprisonment on various counts, including ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’.

A man was killed and four others were injured when the actor’s Toyota Land Cruiser ran over them while they were asleep on a pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra on September 28, 2002.

Activist Teesta Setalvad records statement before CBI in FCRA violation case

Teesta-SetalvadActivist Teesta Setalvad on Monday recorded her statement before the CBI in connection with a case against her firm for allegedly receiving around $2.9 lakh in foreign donations in violation of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

She had been asked by a local court to appear before the central agency by Tuesday as on Friday special CBI Judge Anis Khan had reserved an order on the anticipatory bail applications filed by Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand till Tuesday while granting them interim protection from arrest.

The CBI, which registered a case on July 8 against Sabrang Communication and Publishing Pvt Limited, has alleged that SCPPL was not registered under FCRA for collecting money from abroad and the amount of nearly Rs 1.8 crore (2.9 USD) was, therefore, received in violation of the Act as the organisation needed to seek prior approval of the Union Home Ministry.

The CBI sleuths searched four places including premises owned by Setalvad, Anand, an associate Gulam Mohammed Peshimam and the office of SCPPL on July 14.

The probe agency had opposed the bail plea contending the motive behind the transfer of foreign contribution to SCPPL reflected “interference towards the internal security and activities of India” and also contested Setalvad’s claim that the money received was a fee for consultancy.

“During the search, an agreement dated September 22, 2006 between Ford Foundation (a US-based NGO) and SCPPL was seized which clearly showed that the remittances were grants.

There is no mention of any ‘consultancy’ therein,” the CBI told the court.

The CBI, which is probing the firm’s accounts from 2004 to 2014, claimed to have recovered documents showing that the money received from the Ford Foundation had not been cleared by the Home Ministry.

Setalvad, during the July 14 searches by CBI, had termed the action by the probe agency as a” shameful political vendetta”.

“The Zakia Jafri case begins its final hearings on July 27 2015. The Naroda Patiya appeals (Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi) are being heard in the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday.

This is nothing but a bid to subvert the cause of public justice and ensure that no justice happens in these cases,” she had said in a statement. Kodnani was a minister in the Gujarat government under Narendra Modi and Bajrangi is a notorious Hindu right wing activist.
