Senior PWD clerk booked for graft

A senior clerk with Public Works Department (PWD) has been booked for allegedly demanding Rs. 1.50 lakh bribe to speed up the process of the complainant’s application, seeking job on compassionate grounds in the department after his father’s demise, police said.

The accused Dileep Bhosale (51), senior clerk with the PWD office in suburban Chembur, was booked yesterday under the provision of Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988, said Rajesh Bagalkote, Assistant Police Commissioner (ACB).

According to Mumbai Unit of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the victim’s father who worked with the PWD office in Chembur as a labourer died some years ago. The victim sought job in his father’s position and submitted all the required documents in May 2013.

In June last year, the victim visited the office to enquire about his application status when Bhosale assured quickening up of his case provided the victim shells out Rs. 1.50 lakh.

The complainant agreed to pay the bribe and it was decided that Bhosale would receive Rs. 50,000 as first installment.

“The victim subsequently approached the ACB. We gathered all evidence against the accused and booked him in the case yesterday,” Bagalkote said.

Maha to soon let municipalities raise funds via bonds

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said his administration will soon allow municipal corporations to raise funds by selling bonds in the market to enable them to undertake various infrastructure projects.

“I agree flexibility is needed for municipal corporations to raise money. For various reasons, in the last many years, they were not allowed to do so. I assure that immediately we will permit them to raise funds by selling bonds,” Fadnavis told a gathering of industrialists and planners here to discuss the ways and means to make the megapolis a global financial hub.

He, however, said the funds raised should be utilised well and in time.

“Raising funds is not an issue. The area of concern is don’t just raise funds, but also spend them. There are outlays but no outcomes. Nearly 30-40 per cent of the capital raised is unutilised. We have big plans to raise funds, but what is more important is to spend it in proper manner and in right time,” he said.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Sitaram Kunte said the civic body had been seeking permission from the previous UPA government to raise funds, but they were never approved.

“We had sought permission from the previous UPA government to raise up to Rs. 2,000 crore through bonds. But they never approved it…They must be having some reasons for it. But with the chief minister assuring us, we think we can easily raise Rs. 5,000 crore through bonds,” he said.

Kunte further said these funds would be utilised to create better infrastructure. “We will use the funds to create better infrastructure in the city, which we plan to make more competitive and inclusive,” he said.

It can be noted that the richest civic body in Asia earlier this week has allocated only a paltry sum for two large infra projects in the city out of its over Rs 33,400 crore annual budget, as more than half its annual planned expenditure is spent on its moribund army of employees. The BMC’s annual budget is larger than that of many small states.

Fire in Byculla’s residential building, 2 injured

A major fire on Friday broke out in a three-storeyed residential building near Byculla railway station injuring two persons but 20 other occupants were safely rescued, a Fire Brigade official said.

The blaze broke out at the top floor of ‘Noor Manzil’ in South Mumbai apparently due to a short circuit. The injured were admitted to civic-run Nair Hospital, he said.

“We got a call at around 9 am about a fire in a residential building near Byculla station. We initially treated it as a Grade-1 fire and sent four water tankers. It was later upgraded to a Grade-2 fire (major) and a total of eight fire engines and seven water tankers were deployed to put out the blaze,” the official said.

The fire apparently started due to a short circuit in electrical wiring and got aggravated when a cooking gas cylinder burst when the flames spread, he said.

“The third floor was almost gutted. The Fire Brigade managed to rescue around 20 people, who were present in the building at the time of the incident,” the official said.

After Iqbal Kaskar and his aide, another man held in extortion case

One more person was arrested in connection with the criminal case in which underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar and his associate were apprehended early this week, police said.

Kaskar and his associate Shabbir Sheikh were nabbed on Tuesday in the case related to extortion and assault filed by an estate agent, Salim Shaikh, with J J Marg Police Station.

They are now in police custody. “A third accused in the case, Aasif Chunawala, was today arrested,” said Additional Commissioner of Police Krishna Prakash.

According to police, Chunawala (50) was questioned for several hours before being placed under arrest. An FIR was registered on Monday night after the complaint by the estate agent alleged that Kaskar and his men demanded Rs. 3 lakh from him and assaulted him last Friday in a building in Bhendi Bazar area, police said.

Kaskar had been deported from the United Arab Emirates in 2003. Dawood’s fifth sibling was wanted in a murder offence and his alleged role in the controversial Sara Sahara case where a building had come up illegally on a piece of prime government land in South Mumbai. A court acquitted him in both the cases in 2007.

Replica of Mumbai’s CST star attraction at Dubai fest

A huge replica of Mumbai’s famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station was one of the star attractions of the India pavilion at the just concluded Dubai Shopping Fest, according to an organiser.

Maharashtra was the theme for the India pavilion at the Global Village.

The huge replica of the famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus measured 80 meters in width and 10 meters in height.

The terminus is an extravagant architectural feat that has been a mainstay of the Mumbai railway system for many years.

The pavilion, spread across 11,500 square meters, provided an outlet to display their art on an international platform, and to spread knowledge of the work that are engaged with.

The vibrant display included traditional Indian clothing and handlooms, as well as samples of Indian foods, organiser Sunil Bhatia, Managing Director of E4 Entertainers, said.

The recipient of multiple awards over the years, the India Pavilion has always given visitors a window into Indian culture with its impressive themed displays, handicrafts stations, decorated shopping stalls and cultural shows, he said.

Taking inspiration from the ‘Surajkund Crafts Mela’ in Haryana, where traditional craftsmen from all over India use to exhibit their authentic products, Bhatia said he brought the similar concept to Dubai.

Love is a special bond-Part II

The couple who can understand, share and talk (like best friends), be for each other at all times is what it takes to make it an awesome relationship. Love is something abstract; when one experiences that it just happens on spontaneous moment and the essence of love is simply fantastic.

There are people who want love and attention from others mainly due to the fact that they never received it in their childhood or were in broken families. Some are so deprived of it that they desperately need love. Always in search of that happiness in this complicated world with its endless complex situations. Everyone needs love and care in this world in order to lead a normal life. But first one should learn to love themselves. If you can’t love and appreciate yourself, then every moment will seem like pain and tortuous time. One should always have a positive self-esteem because depressed mind will take him/her nowhere.

Well every person has different love story, but sometimes not all of them end in ‘happily-ever-after’ (I mean often people realise that the relationship not working out/ one of them has cheated). Reasons can be many for the love story to end on a bad note. If an individual gets a very bad experience in love very early in life, then he/she has a very negative approach/attitude towards it. But never have such negative attitude towards life or love for that matter. If it was meant to be, it would have been but you see everything happens for a reason. Also some couples don’t get approval by their family due to caste differences or whatsoever reasons; they should never give up on love, even if it means to face many hardships but in the end one shall be blessed with the person they love the most. We are living in such times wherein one has to think 10 times before expressing out their views/feelings in fear of facing a backlash. Well the funny part is certain groups of people are hell bent on marrying off lovers seen out in public/social media celebrating the day of love. I guess they have taken up the responsibility (probably these people are sitting too idle for all this) to unite these young couples in the holy and pure bond of matrimony. Just don’t need to be afraid of any damn group or person, go out on 14th Feb and celebrate Valentine’s Day with your loved ones.

AAP rejects Imam Bukhari’s offer of support to it in Delhi Assembly elections

AAM-partyAam Aadmi Party(AAP) on Friday rejected Delhi Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari’s offer of support to it and his appeal to the Muslim community to vote for the party in Delhi Assembly elections.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh said, “We have always been against communal Politics, people from all religion will vote for us. AAP doesn’t support the ideology of Imam Bukhari, we don’t need their support.”

Bukhari had earlier asked Muslims to support the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party in the Delhi Assembly elections.

Traditionally the Imam has always asked Muslims to support Congress but this time he appealed Muslims to vote for AAP candidates and help in forming a secular government in Delhi.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also responded to the appeal saying, “The correct answer to such ‘fatwas’ is through the ballot.”

“We are confident that people from all castes and communities will come out and vote for us,” Jaitley added.

Several other parties have also asked people to vote for AAP in the upcoming elections. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Thursday appealed to the people of Delhi to vote for AAP candidates during the Assembly elections.

In a tweet, Banerjee had said, “Delhi elections on 7. My request to all of you in Delhi to please vote for AAP. For the greater need of the country and development in Delhi”.

Prakash Karat of CPM had also said that his party will support AAP on the seats where they have not fielded their own candidates.

Illicit liquor recovery: ‘Delhi Police has evidence against AAP candidate Naresh Balyan’

Delhi Police on Friday said that it has evidence against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Naresh Balyan, in connection with the recovery of a large haul of liquor in a house in his Uttam Nagar constituency.

Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi confirmed that the police have some evidence against Balyan and that is why it had served notices to the AAP candidate to join the probe.

Bassi added, the investigating officer will take appropriate action in accordance with law, and if needed Balyan will be arrested.

The Delhi Police chief maintained that police is acting independently with no pressure from any quarter.

Meanwhile, AAP leaders – Ashish Khetan, Ashutosh and Sanjay Singh – met the Delhi Police Commissioner and kept their side of the story.

Later speaking to the media, AAP leader Sanjay Singh said, “We told Bassiji we aren’t opposing investigation, but Balyan will join investigation after polls.”

The Delhi Police chief assured us that he will look into our side of the story, Singh added.

Balyan will appear before police on February 08.

On January 31, Election Commission officials had conducted a raid on Balyan’s Uttam Nagar residence and lodged a first information report against him.
Around 8,000 liquor bottles were seized by the election watchdog. The bottles were labelled “for sale in Haryana”.

Balyan had then said that the bottles confiscated belonged to a BJP worker.

“I have no link with this property. The BJP always orchestrates such games. The allegations are baseless. The liquor has been confiscated from a BJP worker who is from our village,” said Balyan.

Police had said the liquor was brought to Delhi from Haryana’s Bahadurgarh, and they have also informed the Election Commission about the incident.

Balyan, who is a municipal councillor from Nawada in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, is contesting the Assembly election from Uttam Nagar.

250 ‘missing’ children traced and reunited with families in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh police along with other government departments’ officials have traced 250 children working at different places here and reunited them with their families under a drive “Smile” which was run from January 1 to January 31.

“We identified 250 children, who had mainly run away from their families, working at different places and putting up at stations, bus stands and other places in the district and reunited them their families. We have traced 5 more children and are making efforts to identify and contact their parents to unite them,” Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Bhopal Range, Sriniwas Verma told.

He said that special teams were formed that traced children. The teams searched different public places, Verma added.

The DIG said that majority of these children have left their places over trivial issues – like scoldings. Some of them were found to be hooked to drugs and didn’t want to return home, he added.

Verma said that some children from West Bengal, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh who had run away from their families were found working.

“Their families were contacted after which they were reunited with their love ones,” he added. In many cases, he said that the parents of the children had registered cases of their missing kids with police.

State police action has come after the Supreme Court last year directed the states to find out of the missing children, especially of the poor and chided MP for its apathy in dealing with this issue.
