UP Board 12th examination result highlighted students who not only managed to pass the exam with limited resources, but also topped the race numbers. Khalsa Girls School fringe topper with 92 per cent, Aanchal Kumar is one such.
A resident of Meerut city in Uttar Pradesh, Aanchal’s father Rajendra Kumar owns a juice stall on Citadel Road, holding responsibility of upbringing of two sons and two daughters.
School topper Aanchal always aimed to become a doctor, but how? This question would rise in her father’s eyes day and night and fulfilling his daughter’s dream seemed to him a nightmare. Aanchal said, “medical education is not going to be easy. I’m going to take admission in B.Sc and will prepare for PMT simultaneously.”
The Principal of the school, Dr. Manu Bhardwaj, however said he will try his best to provide all possible facilities to help her achieve her goal.
Amit Shah is a capable and dedicated leader who always gives apt answers during interviews. He has acted like Hanuman for Narendra Modi. He was responsible for BJP’s massive turnaround in UP. Mr Shah must work closely with Modi in the PMO because several lobbyists and agents exist in Delhi whose intention is to derive quick riches by unfair methods. Modi has performed a laudable job by asking the secretaries to give him presentation about the work planned by them. Hitherto, the secretaries were just relaxing and craving for lucrative foreign postings and passing the buck to joint secretaries who revealed in being called “ the minister’s man”. “Pehle mantriji ko de aao, phir ham lenge”. The PA’s and joint secretaries only had to perform this work.
In our DG Shipping, we have a senior officer who loves suffixes like ex-officio. The government needs to send a strong message to these IAS officers that only good performance will count and nothing else. Providing drinking water, water for irrigation ( one drop , more crop), providing electric power and curtailing it’s theft are the main jobs requiring attention from day one. What tasks can be done, what cannot be done by us, what is required to be studied and assistance from foreign experts should be sought without delay.
The newly appointed IAS officers must first work in villages by seeking a posting in rural areas. Large number of sprawling bungalows exists in Delhi. Accommodation must be allotted only to deserving candidates and others must be strictly asked to vacate the premises. It is good to see that AAP is disintegrating and slowly becoming redundant and television channels should not provide fresh lease of life to them by offering them unwarranted publicity. The country has already suffered a lot because of them. The new government must monitor the content aired on television channels. A very good self regulatory mechanism is the need of the hour.
The RSS must undertake the work of citizen development. There is no point in building Ram temple if you cannot or do not want to read “ Ramcharit manas” or recite the “Sunderkand”. For example. “Swasthya shareer” and “Shreshta acharan” are more important instead of constructing a temple and amassing kilos of gold in it. RSS must undertake this work and provide periodical reports to the government.
Morale of Congress party members hits an all-time low as many of them indulge in blame game and skip crucial party meetings.
Ever since the Congress party suffered its worst defeat party members have started blaming senior party leaders for its inability to connect with the voters. According to sources, suburban guardian minister Naseem Khan had campaigned against Mumbai North Central MP Priya Dutt which was one of the factors responsible for her defeat in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election.
According to a source from Mumbai Regional Congress Committee, “Yes huge infighting is happening within the Congress Party. Party members who have been praising Rahul Gandhi have suddenly started criticising him for the party’s debacle in the election. There has been a huge disconnect between the party leadership and party members. The anti-incumbency factor too was responsible for the defeat of Congress party.”
The morale of the party leaders has taken a severe beating as many of them skipped the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) meeting. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan was in Delhi while state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre had failed to attend the meeting.
Former MPs Milind Deora (Mumbai South), Eknath Gaikwad (Mumbai South Central), Priya Dutt (Mumbai North Central) and Sanjay Nirupam (Mumbai North) who has lost the general election has skipped the meeting. The sole defeated MP present was Mumbai North West candidate Gurudas Kamat.
The absentee legislators included Annie Shekhar (Colaba) Naseem Khan (Chandivali), (also the guardian minister of Mumbai suburbs), Kripashankar Singh (Kalina) Baba Siddique (Bandra (W), Baldev Khosa (Versova) and Aslam Shaikh (Malad).
On the other hand Khan’s brother Sharif, defended him and said that Dutt had bagged more votes from Khan’s Assembly segment this time than in 2009. “Dutt has bagged her highest tally of votes from Khan’s Assembly pocket. How can he be accused of sabotaging her campaign?”
Former Union minister Gurudas Kamat, who failed to retain the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat, blamed the state’s failure to implement election promises like slum cut-off extension effectively and resolve the affordable housing problem as a reason behind the poll debacle.
On the other hand, the Narayan Rane supporters had skipped the meeting convened by Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee meeting. According to sources some Congress party members were demanding a rethink about having an alliance with the NCP. They also alleged that many party members were confined to their own constituencies and failed to garner support for the party.
While the BJP and Shiv Sena have found themselves taking contradictory positions over the invite to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, another issue could cause tension between the two allies – the choice of the chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Maharashtra elections.
With Shiv Sena workers putting up posters in Mumbai which say “Dilli mein Modi sarkar, Mumbai mein Uddhav sarkar”, many wondered if this was a signal that a Thackeray would take up an official post for the first time. “We are trying to have a legitimate goal. And if we dream of our leader becoming Chief Minister, it is not wrong. And Maharashtra wants what we want. Maharashtra would be happy if the new CM would be Uddhav Thackeray. And naturally we wouldn’t have total support from all the parties and we are sure we are in the process this will happen,“ said senior Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai.
This could upset the BJP’s plans of projecting senior OBC leader Gopinath Munde as the chief ministerial candidate which is why he may not get a cabinet berth at the Centre. The BJP has already announced that Mr. Munde will lead the party in the state elections.
The Sena is, however, insisting on the formula where it remains the senior partner in state polls while the BJP is the senior partner in Lok Sabha election.
The BJP-Shiv Sena combine won 42 out of the state’s 48 Lok Sabha seats, decimating the Congress-NCP alliance which could only win six seats. In 2009, the Congress-NCP alliance had cornered 25 seats. The Congress, which had won 17 seats in the state five years ago, took a severe knock, and saw its tally dip to a mere two. Its ally, NCP, fared only marginally better, winning four seats in the state.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed against 31-year-old Devu Chodankar on Friday after he allegedly posted anti-Narendra Modi remarks on a Facebook group in March.
Mr. Chodankar- a shipbuilding professional from Mumbai – has been booked under sections 153(A), 295(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 125 of the People’s Representation Act and 66-A of the Information Technology Act. Some of these sections are non-bailable.
Mr. Chodankar’s lawyer, Jatin Naik said, “My client was a supporter of the BJP. And this is nothing but to take political revenge.”
A protest was launched today in Goa as Chodankar’s supporters feared his arrest. He has not answered the two summons issued to him by the Goa Police cyber cell and a local court has turned down his anticipatory bail plea.
Superintendent of Police Kartik Kashyap said, “We have served summons on him twice but he did not turn up for investigation. The comments he made qualify for a cognizable offence and accordingly we have registered a case. Even the court has found merit in our argument and turned down his plea for anticipatory bail.”
Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has denied that action was being taken against Mr. Chodankar by the state government. Mr. Parrikar tweeted, “A prominent citizen complained about a Facebook post, which was registered as per SC guidelines by the police. Anticipatory bail was rejected by court as per evidence & Govt. has no role.”
The FIR was registered after a former head of the Confederation of Indian Industries in Goa, Atul Pai Kane, complained against him.
A software engineer was nabbed by the police in suburban Malad as he was allegedly about to ambush and gun down his former girlfriend, who had accused him of rape.
Police claimed to have prevented the attack by arresting Amit Jain (31) in Marve Road area.
Jain, arrested by the suburban Goregaon police on the charge of raping his girlfriend in 2012 and later released on bail, was seeking to take revenge, police said.
According to the police, he was set to ambush the victim and her father, but was nabbed before that.
He pointed a pistol at the waiting policemen who managed to overpower him and seize two country-made pistols, four magazines and 20 rounds, procured from Madhya Pradesh.
Jain wanted to kill the girl, who is related to him, as he blamed her for wrecking his life by filing the rape complaint, said Additional Police Commissioner Brijesh Singh.
“Jain was subsequently arrested in the rape case and was lodged in jail from September 2012 to January 2013. Later, he was granted bail,” Mr. Singh said.
An employee with a multinational company, Jain had an affair with the victim and had promised to marry her. However, their relations soured, following which she split up with him and lodged an FIR for rape in 2012.
Jain, a management graduate from Madhya Pradesh, lost his job after the complaint was filed, and was nursing a strong hatred against the victim and her family, police said.
“He had threatened the victim on several occasions, so her family shifted the house. However, he managed to find out their (new) house and procured firearms by paying over Rs. 90,000. He was waiting for the victim and her father to arrive in Malad so that he can shoot them in public,” Dr. Singh said.
“We had a tip-off about his plan and laid a trap. Jain was intercepted when he pointed the pistol at the cops. Our men overpowered him and seized the weapons.”
The accused had vowed to avenge himself by murdering the girl and her family, Dr. Singh claimed. Malvani police are conducting further probe.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Sunday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi amidst reports of him stepping down following party’s poll debacle.
Earlier this week, Assam CM Tarun Gogoi had met Sonia at her 10 Janpath residence and tendered his resignation. Party president, however, did not accept Gogoi’s resignation.
Congress faced its worst ever defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and many party leaders including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi had offered to resign taking moral responsibility of the rout.
In Maharashtra, Congress won just one seat in the Lok Sabha elections.
Salary payments at the Naresh Goyal- run Jet Airways continue to be delayed despite the Rs. 2,060 crore infusions by Etihad, and the issue would be raised at the meeting of the staff representatives and chief operating officer Hameed Ali this week, sources said.
The meeting is scheduled for May 28.
The company, which reported a loss of Rs. 268 crore in the December quarter, is set to declare its March quarter and full fiscal financial numbers later this week.
“Earlier the company used to pay salary on the last day of the month. Then the payment date was rescheduled to 7th of every month and thereafter to 15th after the airline was hit by a financial crisis. Unfortunately, this has become a new norm and we are paid around the middle of the month even after the Rs 2,060-crore Etihad deal,” said a Jet Airways source.
Stating that the employees earlier accepted the deferred payment schedule as the company was going though “financial turbulence”, sources said, however even after the Etihad deal, the management maintains that the airline is short of funds.
“We have decided that the day we feel the company is not in a position to pay us, we leave the airline as we don’t want to meet the same fate as our peers in Kingfisher Airlines,” sources added.
When contacted, a Jet Airways spokesperson said salaries are disbursed as per a pre-determined schedule.
“Jet Airways has always met and will continue to honour all its obligations to its employee,” the airline said in a statement, without admitting to delayed payments.
The airline also did not say on what date of the month it is paying salaries.
Maharashtra unit of Congress on Sunday questioned Shiv Sena’s silence over the invitation to Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif for Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi’s swearing-in on Monday.
In a statement, Congress spokesman Sachin Sawant said his party had always believed that disputes can be resolved through bilateral talks, but Sena and BJP sang a different tune earlier.
“Congress has always given priority to maintaining peace and harmony with neighbours and when need arose, Pakistan was taught a lesson by entering its territory. But BJP and Shiv Sena have always been critical of Congress’s policy,” he said.
Sena has been very vocal in its opposition to Pakistani cricket players playing in India, or artistes from that country performing in Mumbai.
“Arrival of Pakistan PM for the swearing-in is a big event,” Sawant noted. “It was expected that Shiv Sena would make its stand clear on presence of Nawaz Sharif but its silence shows that its earlier anti-Pakistan stand was just for political convenience,” he said.
“Inviting Pakistan PM is not wrong. But had it been done by the Congress, what would the BJP and Sena have done?” he asked.
A special anti-money laundering court here has ordered freezing of Rs 2.5 crore cash lying in a bank account of a real estate firm in connection with the 2012 alleged gold export scam worth Rs 464 crore in Metal and Scrap Trading Corporation (MSTC), a government PSU.
The court has issued orders acting on a complaint filed in this regard by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) which had attached the said amount, lying in a private bank in Mumbai under the name of Ms Skylark Buildcon Pvt Ltd.
The ED had attached this bank amount in December last year in furtherance of its probe into the money laundering case against various individuals of the said firm and Ms Space Mercantile Co Pvt Ltd, involved in this case, after taking cognisance of a corruption case registered by the CBI.
“On a thorough perusal of the provisional attachment order, the FIR and the charge-sheet, the investigations conducted by the ED, and the statements recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and on careful consideration of the arguments advanced on behalf of the complainant (ED) and defendants (Ms Skylark Buildcon Pvt Ltd)…come to the prima facie conclusion that the defendants have committed the scheduled offences, generated proceeds of crime and laundered them.
“No doubt, the properties attached are proceeds of crime or value thereof and are involved in money laundering,” the court of Adjudicating Authority of PMLA Mukesh Kumar said in its recent order.
The Authority is a judicial body to decide on cases of criminal enforcement action.
The gold export fraud scam pertains to the release, and thus loss, of Rs 464 crore of the MSTC by its officials after six export firms submitted forged and fake documents for the release of the amount.
The CBI had in 2012 arrested the then top MSTC officials, who, it said, knowing that documents were fake, accepted them and released the amount to the exporters causing a loss of Rs 464 crore to the company.
Directors of six export houses – Ushma Jewellery and Packaging Export Pvt Ltd, Space Mercantile Company Pvt Ltd, K A Malle Pharmaceutical Company Ltd, Joshi Bullion and Gems Jewellery Pvt Ltd, Bond Gems Pvt Ltd and Indo Bonito Multinational Pvt Ltd – submitted the forged documents to get 80 per cent of the export value released to them, the CBI had said.
The ED, in its investigation report in this regard said the amount of Rs 2.5 crore lying in the bank account “are proceeds of crime laundered by Ms Space Mercantile Co Pvt held in the said account”.
