In Nitish Kumar’s presence, partyman says he will ‘bury Modi’

With India more than half-way through the election, the tenor of the campaign is getting uglier.
At an election rally in Bihar yesterday, a politician declared, “I want to say that if we join forces against Narendra Modi, then we will bury him in Bhagalpur’s soil.”

Present on stage during the controversial statement was Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has logged many hours in a committed political feud with Mr. Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.

The declaration was made by Shakuni Choudhary, who recently joined Mr. Kumar’s party, the Janata Dal (United) or JD(U).

Last year, Mr. Kumar truncated a 17-year alliance with the BJP over its decision to centre-stage Mr. Modi in its campaign for the national election. Mr. Kumar is among the 64-year-old’s fiercest detractors, and alleges that Mr. Modi is a polarizing political figure who failed to stop communal riots in Gujarat in 2002 in which more than 1,000 people were killed, most of them Muslims.

A Supreme Court inquiry has cleared Mr. Modi of allegations of collusion in the violence; a Gujarat court has upheld that finding.

In March, a Congress leader in Uttar Pradesh, Imran Masood, was arrested for a hate speech in which he threatened to “chop Mr. Modi into pieces.”

Earlier this week, the Election Commission banned rallies and public meetings for Mr. Modi’s top aide, Amit Shah, and a Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, ruling that both leaders had delivered speeches designed to incite communal hatred.

Mr. Shah was allowed to return to campaigning late last week after he accepted his mistake, the Election Commission said. Mr. Khan, a senior minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, has said he will not apologize because he has “not committed any mistake” and has said he will make his case in court.

Rahul Gandhi attacks K Chandrasekhar Rao’s party, says it only wants power

Rahul Gandhi attacked the Telangana Rashtra Samithi or TRS for failing to act on its promise to “merge with the Congress after bifurcation” of Andhra Pradesh to create a separate Telangana state was announced.

He also claimed in Mehboobnagar, one of the 10 districts that will make up the new state, “It wouldn’t have been possible to make Telangana without Sonia Gandhi.” Sonia Gandhi is Mr. Gandhi’s mother and party chief.

Mr. Gandhi pitched for a Congress government in the new Telangana state that will be formally born on June 2, saying frontrunner TRS, “makes promises but does not fulfill them… they said a Dalit should be Telangana’s CM. The TRS has forgotten all its promises, it wants only power.”

TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao or KCR, who fronted the campaign for a Telangana state and now aims to be its first Chief Minister, left the Congress high and dry earlier this year, after the ruling party rode rough shod over many of its own lawmakers to push through Parliament the bill that provided for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. He decided that he would not merge his party with the Congress after all.

But KCR has indicated that he may be open to a partnership after the elections. Assembly elections are being held along with general elections in Andhra Pradesh.

Opinion polls have indicated that KCR is likely to bag the maximum number of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, dividends for his fight for a separate Telangana. The Congress, despite claiming credit for pushing for bifurcation, could have to settle for fewer seats than the seven it had from the region last time.

Modi should now commence work

There has been enough election campagining now and Narendra Modiji who expects to be our next PM should give up “jijaji” and “RSVP” and start displaying constructive approach right away. We see reports and photographs of trains falling off and there have been several instances of trucks loaded with containers falling off and yet on the other hand, we read of Mr. Giriraj Singh sending those to Pakistan who will not vote for Modi and Azam Khan reportedly circulating a CD, justifying his statement on the Kargil war.

We are very short of skilled manpower, fit to be employed. There is an urgent need to train up more technicians through our industries. Our youth are more interested in taking up softer options by going for MBA to get high paying packages without any work experience. However, they are not to be blamed because we have not done good work in talent nurturing and vocational guidance. The IITs should develop in students a passion for technology and it’s use to provide day to day needs to , say, the farmers and road builders. If you go to other countries, even Malaysia and Indonesia, you will find containers being efficiently carried and delivered in good condition right on your door whereas we are struggling with the multimodal transportation. We used to carry lot of refrigerated cargo from Durban to Singapore and container handling at Singapore is very efficient. Same is the case with Latin American countries.

We have not moved out. We should buy (with the help of the government) land in African countries and create business there. On the southern side at the bulge of Africa, there are countries like Togo, Benin etc; where the government should drive our businessmen to for expansion and job creation, not simply build a huge mansion on Altamount Road and be happy with Mumbai Indians. Our ministry of Industry, with the Planning commission must assist and develop new entrepreneurs and once they are reasonably well off, they must be driven out, go set up plants outside and take the youth for working there. In Ethiopia there is lot of scope and then in Myanmar. Modiji is wasting time on Jijaji , why not he call and tell Mr. Adani , take him and set plants across India and overseas and enhance economic activity for common good. Create wealth by your constructive endeavors and build infrastructure and see that the wealth is distributed reasonably equally to narrow the gap between super rich and lower middle class.

Sonia unwell Pawar unwilling

Sonia-unwell-pawarRahul Gandhi with Mother’s lieutenants attended the Mumbai rally in urgency. Pawar skipped the gathering after knowing that Mrs. Gandhi is not attending it.

The much awaited Congress rally which was supposed to be attended by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi was cancelled due to her illness. Even Sharad Pawar, Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) supremo skipped the rally after learning that she is not attending the rally.

The Congress party said Sonia Gandhi is unwell, but refused to disclose any details about her illness.
Congress members received a setback in the morning when they learnt that their president is not attending the event.
“Members of the Congress Party were enthusiastic about Sonia’s rally but it’s unfortunate that she has not come,” said one of the members. When asked about Sharad Pawar, he said, “He was supposed to be present at the event but in the last moment, we got the news that he is also not coming for the rally.”

“We were preparing for the rally since past fifteen days. It’s good that Rahul Gandhi has attended it,” said MPCC spokesperson Sachin Sawant.

MRCC chief Janardhan Chandurkar said they were expecting over a crowd of two lakh at the rally. “It will have a direct impact on voters. After this rally, the fence sitters will also join the Congress. We are sure this rally will help us get all the six candidates from the city re-elected.”

He said that through this rally, the Congress has sent a clear message, particularly to the Muslims and Dalits, that the party is with them. “We will not allow anyone to divide the country on religious lines,” said Chandurkar.
While addressing the rally, at around 7: 45Pm, Rahul Gandhi, Congress Vice President attacked Modi over Adani. He said, Narendra Modi has given 45,000 acres of land in Gujarat to Adani Groups at the throw away price of Rs. 30 crore. The land is equivalent to your Thane district.”

However, Maharashtra’s biggies from Congress party were present at the event. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Jayant Patil, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Narayan Gandhi, MPCC president Manikrao Thakre, MRCC President Janardhan Chandurkar and Rajeev Shukla were present at the rally.

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will hold a public meet at the same venue today.

After eight months, Dabholkar killers elude police net

SONY DSCThe sensational murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar is yet to be solved eight months after he was gunned down while on a morning walk here, creating a nationwide furore.

Two dozen probe teams and investigations across Maharashtra and neighbouring states are yet to yield any results.

Despite assurances by top officials, including Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Home Minister R.R. Patil, there is no progress in nabbing the culprits.

Over 1,200 locals and eyewitnesses were questioned for leads, local CCTV footages scanned, more than 700 history-sheeters, including gun-wielders have been interrogated in the past eight months.

Dabholkar, a campaigner against superstition and witchcraft and a medical doctor, social worker and a journalist, was shot at from close range and killed while on a morning walk near his residence close to the Omkareshwar temple in Pune Aug 20.

Of at least four bullets fired, two hit Dabholkar in the neck and back. He died later at the government-run Sassoon Hospital.

Despite CM Chavan announcing a reward of Rs.10 lakh for information about the killers, the police have notched no success in cracking the case.

Incidentally, the Dabholkar investigations helped police crack around two dozen other serious crimes and nab the accused, including an absconder in a seven-year old rape case, and others involved in major dacoities and robberies.

Dabholkar had rubbed many people the wrong way and had reportedly even received threats. His son Hamid said he (the late Dabholkar) refused to register a complaint about the threats, saying he needed no weapons in his cause.

In 1989, Dabholkar founded the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS) (society for the elimination of blind faith) with a few like-minded people and raised his voice against superstition, irrational practices, blind faith and beliefs.

He confronted dubious tantriks and babas – people who claimed to have supernatural powers and preyed on gullible people.

Dabholkar was instrumental in pushing the state government to frame an anti-superstition law which was finally approved and passed as an ordinance a day after his murder and later passed by the state legislature in December 2013.

The new law seeks to eradicate black magic, blind faith, superstitious beliefs, rituals and sacrifices to drive out evil spirits or ensure male progeny, perpetrated by self-styled godmen and witchcraft and wizardry practitioners.

BJP leader Giriraj Singh’s remarks anti-constitutional: NCP

Giriraj-SinghThe NCP condemned as “anti-constitutional” Bihar BJP leader Giriraj Singh’s ‘back Narendra Modi or go to Pakistan’ remark.

“This statement violates the poll code, Indian Penal Code and Constitution,” Majeed Memon, Rajya Sabha member and NCP Secretary, said.

“It is not only mischievous, notorious but tends to create disharmony and cause unrest in the country.

“The statement is not only violative of election code of conduct but also attracts serious criminal offences under the Indian Penal Code and is contrary to the Constitution.

“In view of the fact that such a dangerous statement is carried on the front pages of leading newspapers, it has become necessary for the Election Commission to act forthwith and cancel Giriraj’s candidature.

“At the same time it has become inescapable duty of both BJP chief Rajnath Singh and their Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to publicly condemn the statement, disown the same loudly and issue public apology,” he said.
