Abu Azmi’s U-turn over rape remark

We should not penalize Farhan Azmi for the foolish statements made by his father Abu Azmi. This young man appears earnest and is saying that he, his wife and sisters disagrees with the comments issued by Abu Azmi on rape. Azmi has a habit of speaking very fast which visually gives an impression that he does not think before saying. He should go back to “Madrasa” and refresh his knowledge about Islam. Even his son seems to say that.

However, Abu Azmi is a “crank” and is not as dangerous as Azam Khan. Look at the manner in which he is remembering “ Bapu” and “ Maulana Azad” as if he knew them well. The children of Mulayam Singh are not as forthcoming in expressing regret as Farhan Azmi has been. We should not put him to any disadvantage on this count. Dimple Yadav has not spoken and neither Jaya Bachchan had issued any statements. Akhilesh had smiled and said “Zamana bada kharab hai”. “ Aap to itne young hain, aap ko zamane ka itna ilm kaise ho gaya”.

Mulayam Singh Yadav and Azam Khan must be banned from contesting elections. Azam Khan is dangerous and Mulayam Singh is his ardent supporter (for political reasons). Farhan Azmi has given an impression of being a good young man and an honest man. We should support him by expressing our goodwill. Abu Azmi later has issued a clarification that he never said that rape victims should be punished. He also added that the rapist should be punished and girl is a victim. Azmi said that only a mad person will issue such statements.

Why Narendra Modi should win, simply because there is lack of credible leaders in the party. After Modi wins and forms a creditable government (and not merely rehabilitating the old), he must take steps to instill discipline among the masses and especially among the senior officers who derive all benefits.

I had earlier suggested that we should make Rata Tata the Minister of Industry and seek his expertise. He has now been honoured by the British government. The old norm that only MPs will become ministers needs to have a relook. In certain ministries which require special insight, the experts from the relevant industry and business should be inducted to gain from their first hand knowledge. Some people say that Adani and Ambani have prospered on account of crony capitalism. Let them derive benefit but they should not take unfair advantage of it. The government must encourage other industrialists too by offering them incentives and tax breaks. When these industries start earning profits they must be asked to invest in the social sector. For example, Adani and Ambani must be asked to provide clean drinking water to citizens.

More than Rs 70,00,000 siphoned off from bank account….. But No Fir

siphonedUnauthorised persons have siphoned of seventy lakh ten thousand from the account number 011**********596 in the name of M/s Aqdas Consortium from Bank of India, CBD Belapur branch. As per covenants of the agreement dated 20th December, 2012, instructions were given to the bank that operation of the said account would be done jointly by Lead Partner and member, being M/s Aqdas Maritime Agency Pvt Ltd and M/s ARR Maritime Allied Services Pvt. Ltd. The accused persons in connivance of officials of bank have siphoned out Rs70,46,750/- which belongs to the company. As per instruction sample signatures of Naved Shaikh, Haroon Shaikh on behalf of M/s Aqdas Maritime Agency Pvt. Ltd and sample signatures of Radhakrishnan Iyer Sukumar Santosh on behalf of M/s ARR Maritime Allied Services Pvt. Ltd were submitted to the bank. Official letters have been sent to all respective police chowkies along with the evidence to commissioner of police Navi Mumbai but ARR Maritime possess strong influence on the police and hence they have not carried out any investigation. Even the Bank of India officials have failed to cooperate with Aqdas Maritime Agency.

Naved Shaikh, Director of Aqdas Maritime Agency said, “Our firm learnt that the bank in defiance of instructions and acting in criminal connivance M/s ARR Maritime Allied Services Pvt. Ltd. its director/signatories/officials has permitted unauthorized and illegal withdrawals and payments. Ltd, which is contrary to instructions of the account holder, i.e. M/s Aqdas Consortium” added Shaikh.

It is thus apparent that bank acting in criminal connivance with directors/signatories of M/s ARR Maritime Allied Services Pvt Ltd. has siphoned out money belonging to M/s Aqdas Consortium and committed falsification of accounts. Such type of crimes invite imprisonment for 7 years and fine or both. Aqdas has also instructed the bank to disallow any transactions, cheques drawn without the signatures of lead partners.

The firm has asked the bank to put on hold/keep in abeyance any such transaction or cheque drawn by RadhaKrishnan and Sukumar Santosh and notify Naved Shaikh. Adqas has also filed a complaint against Makrand Pradhan, Santosh Sukumar, Radhakrishna Iyer, Aruna Singh and M/S Maritime Allied Services Pvt Ltd and various other unknown officials of the firm and officials of Bank of Maharashtra with CBD Belapur police station on 7th February, 2014.

A joint venture namely Aqdas Consortium was formed between M/s Aqdas Maritime Agency Pvt. Aqdas Consortium participated and offered its bid in the tender floated by Central Ware Housing Corporation and declared successful in tender bearing No. CWC/RO-Navi Mumbai/D’Node-H&T/2011-12. The firm was appointed as its Handling and Transport contractor. An agreement was executed between Aqdas Consortium and Central Ware Housing Corporation RO Navi Mumbai dated 17th March,2012.

Subsequently a joint venture agreement dated 20th, October, 2012 was executed between M/s Aqdas Maritime Agency Pvt. Ltd as lead partner and M/s ARR Maritime Allied Services Pvt. Ltd as member.
That officer/director of the complainant company has been demanding accounts of the company from the accused No. l to4, but they kept on evading supplying the same. However, it came to be known that these accused have been siphoning money belonging to Aqdas Consortium.

Since the accused persons neither issued statements of account of the money belonging to the complainant company; Director of the company visited the bank on 4th February, 2014 and demanded the statement of account of the account no 01***********96 with the Bank of India Branch C.B.D. Belapur. It was also revealed that accused persons have transferred Rs 70,10,000/-in the account of M/s ARR Maritime Allied Services Pvt. Ltd., illegally without any authorization.

Haroon Shaikh, Director of M/s Aqdas Maritime Agency Pvt. Ltd said, “The accused persons, by their acts have fraudulently and illegally withdrawing and transferring money out of the account of our firm and has cheated us and siphoned out the money belonging to the firm. They have committed criminal breach of trust acting under criminal conspiracy with each other with officials of the bank and usurped the money belonging to our company. It is thus requested that a F.I.R may be ¬registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and accused persons may be punished in accordance with law.”

Bhujbal leads campaign on development plank in MNS stronghold

Fifteen candidates are in the fray for the Nashik constituency in northern Maharashtra where NCP stalwart and PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal is contesting his maiden Lok Sabha election.

Development and corruption are the major issues in the constituency which comprises six Assembly segments of Sinnar, Nashik East, Nashik Central, Nashik West, Deolali and Igatpuri.

Even though anti-incumbency is palpable in some segments, the factor is not that strong in Nashik city as there is a perception that sitting NCP MP Sameer Bhujbal, nephew of Chhagan Bhujbal, is “accessible” and “vocal” in raising local issues.

Sameer won in 2009 by a margin of 22,000 votes over his nearest rival Hemant Godse of MNS as Shiv Sena candidate Datta Gaikwad ate into MNS’ votes.

However, things have changed now. Godse has quit MNS and is contesting on Shiv Sena ticket, whereas the Raj Thackeray-led party has fielded a greenhorn Pradeep Pawar.

AAP has fielded retired irrigation engineer Vijay Pandhare, credited for exposing an alleged irrigation scam.

The revelation by Pandhare had forced Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar to resign for a brief period in 2012.

Bhujbal, sitting MLA from Yeola constituency, has focussed his campaign on development plank.

“The NCP has brought development to Nashik in the last five years which include four-laning of Nashik-Mumbai Highway, constructing a 7-km-long flyover in the city, development of Nashik airport and boosting tourism,” a party leader claimed.

However, the contest is not going to be a smooth one for Bhujbal because MNS is currently representing three Assembly segments, while Shiv Sena and Congress hold Deolali and Igatpuri seats, respectively.

The total number of registered voters in the constituency is 15,93,505.

Polling will be held on April 24 along with 10 other seats in the final phase in Maharashtra.

116 candidates in fray for six Mumbai LS seats

All six constituencies in Mumbai which go to polls on April 24 are set to witness either triangular or four-cornered contests with Congress-NCP going all out to retain their bastions against the opposition onslaught banking on a “Modi wave”.

As many as 116 candidates are in fray for the six constituencies, which are currently held by the Congress-NCP.

Union Minister Milind Deora is locked in a four-cornered contest with Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena), Bala Nandgaonkar (MNS) and Meera Sanyal (AAP) in Mumbai South.

Priya Dutt is fighting a tough battle to retain her Mumbai North Central seat against Poonam Mahajan (BJP), Farhan Azmi (SP) and Phiroze Palkhiwala of AAP.

In Mumbai North West, Gurudas Kamat is locked in a triangular contest with Gajanan Kirtikar (Shiv Sena) and Mahesh Manjrekar (MNS). Though starlet Rakhi Sawant is also in fray with her Rashtriya Aam Party, she is unlikely to make much impact.

South Central Mumbai is seeking a triangular contest with Eknath Gaikwad of Congress pitted against Rahul Shewale of Shiv Sena and Aditya Shirodkar of MNS.

Both Congress and Shiv Sena are battling internal dissidence with legislators Chandrakant Handore and Jagannath Shetty being opposed to Gaikwad and former Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi unhappy with Shewale’s candidature.

In North East, sitting NCP MP Sanjay Dina Patil is in a triangular fight with BJP’s Kirit Somaiya and AAP’s Medha Patkar.

In North Mumbai, Sanjay Nirupam is locked in a four-cornered fight with Gopal Shetty (BJP), Satish Jain (AAP) and Kamlesh Yadav (SP).

All the candidates are braving Mumbai’s hot, humid weather and interacting with voters taking out padyatras, street corner meetings and door-to-door campaign. So far, campaigning has been low-key and glitz and glamour has been absent, whereas in the past film personalities would come out to campaign for candidates.

In Mumbai North, North Central and South Central, there are 21 candidates each in fray while in South, there are 20 nominees. In North East there are total 19 candidates while the least number of 14 candidates are in North West.

There are 52 independents in contesting the polls.

Late actor Sunil Dutt had first contested the election from Mumbai in 1984 and was a elected representative till his death in 2005. Actor Govinda contested from Mumbai North in 2004.

Now, actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar is contesting on MNS ticket from Mumbai North West. There is Rakhi Sawant who has formed her own Rashtriya Aam Party and actor Hemant Birje of ‘Tarzan’ fame, who is contesting in Mumbai North Central contesting on All India Forward Bloc ticket.

Actor Salman Khan and veteran actress Asha Parekh have issued statements in support of Congress candidate from Mumbai North West Gurudas Kamat.

Actor Amol Kolhe, who is known for essaying role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in a television series, has joined the Shiv Sena and has campaigned for the Sena candidates.

Earlier, Shiv Sena-BJP would jointly launch election campaigns in Mumbai with Atal Behari Vajpayee, LK Advani and Bal Thackeray sharing dias at Shivaji Park. However, this time BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi has not shared dias with Shiv Sena leadership during his seven public meetings in the state so far.

BJP sources say that campaign has been three-tier in this election. “Narendra Modi rallies, mahayuti leaders addressing rallies, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, BJP leaders Gopinath Munde, Vinod Tawde have campaigned separately and together,” sources said.

According to BJP sources, the Sena-BJP campaign is very positive. “Our seat sharing was locked without problems and we started our campaign much before the Congress-NCP,” they said.

Modi has addressed rally for Shiv Sena candidate Anand Adsul in Amravati. His Pune rally covered Baramati, as well where alliance partner Mahadev Jankar is contesting. Similarly, his rally in Ahmednagar covered Shirdi as well where Shiv Sena is in fray, sources said.

“A public meeting is planned in Mumbai before the end of campaign for the April 24 elections,” sources said.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will address an election rally at BKC on April 20. Sources said there is difficulty in organising election meetings in Mumbai with only Somaiya ground and BKC available.

Customs seeks data server of passenger info to check smuggling

The spurt in gold and drugs smuggling cases has prompted Mumbai Airport Customs to seek a separate data server of air passengers’ detailed information available with immigration authorities, and three more sniffer dogs to clamp down on smugglers at the international airport.

Immigration authorities currently have the data server which stores the details of every air passenger flying in and out of the country.

This information is required for the purposes of ensuring aviation safety and security. However, the Customs currently does not have a separate data server with air passenger information.

“If we have such data server on air passengers, we can go for data analysis, storage, archiving, and other tasks to hunt down suspects from lakhs of passengers. So we sought the higher authorities to provide us such date server,” a Customs official told PTI.

Mumbai airport witnesses nearly 34 million passenger movements every year and is among the busiest airports in the continent.

At present, the Customs officials depend upon its intelligence information and technology, besides keenly observing the movements of lakhs of passengers on a daily basis to track down the suspects carrying gold and drugs.

“Significant help comes from sniffer dogs also which hint drugs presence with a passenger. We have seven dogs now. Going by the air traffic, we need at least three more sniffer dogs and accordingly, we mooted a proposal for the same before the department concerned,” the Customs official said.

The Customs say that around 20 sniffer dogs are needed for the international airport, air cargo and foreign postal department to detect drugs and explosives. At present, the department is reeling under a 65 per cent shortage.

Moreover, when it comes to gold smuggling, it’s a bit difficult to catch hold of suspects.

“Presently we detect the yellow metal with a passenger through door frame metal detector. However, there were instances where the smugglers managed to hoodwink security agencies and walked away,” the official said.

“If we have access to the air passenger data independently, then we can track down the movements of suspects and inquire them thoroughly,” he said.

“For instance, if a passenger is making a number of trips to some countries, and we can access his personal information and purpose of trips, we can inquire him/her on suspicion if required,” he said.

In 2013-14, as much as 346 kg of gold has been seized from the smugglers by the Customs, a whopping 458 per cent jump in last years’ cases, when 61.66 kg gold was seized.

Drugs worth Rs 105 crore were confiscated in the same period whereas contraband worth Rs 49.77 crore was seized in 2012-13.

Among smuggling cases, a total 187 persons were arrested, which is almost double the number as compared to 94 held in 2012-13.

The Customs is also holding special training sessions for its Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) men on regular intervals to heighten hawk-eyed vigil at the ChhatrapatiShivaji international airport here in a bid to catch hold of suspects.

Boiler explosion: Death toll goes up to 3 in Maha

The death toll in the boiler explosion at an industrial scrap godown in Mumbra near here has gone up to three, with two more persons succumbing to their injuries, police said on Sunday.

While one of the two persons died last night, the other succumbed to his 100 per cent burns in the early hours today at the Thane Civil hospital, they said.

The deceased have been identified as – Fulchand Prasad (35) and NavmanYadav (32).

One person was yesterday killed in the mishap.

Another person who also sustained 100 per cent burns in the explosion is battling for life, doctors at the civil hospital said.

The explosion took place yesterday afternoon at a unit in Gothegar on the Mumbra-Panvel Road, Regional Disaster Management Control (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation had earlier said.

The ShilDiaghar police have booked the owner of the godown, identified as Ajmal, under section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC.

Video camera stolen from EC office

A video camera was stolen from the Election Commission office located at Mulund in Central Mumbai, police said.

The camera, worth around Rs 12,000, was stolen from the office last night, where its batteries were being recharged, they said.

“We have registered a case of theft on the complaint of electoral officer AnnasahebKharde,” police said.

Navghar police are investigating the matter.

Modi is a liar, claims Cong leader Narayan Rane

In a scathing attack on BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, senior Congress leader and Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane today said the Gujarat Chief Minister is a “liar” and “devoid of human values”.

“Modi is a person without humanity and we can see that from the 2002 Gujarat riots,” he told reporters here.

“He did not even visit the family members of (former Congress MP) Ehsaan Jafri who was killed during the riots.

Rane’s son, sitting MP Nilesh Rane, is seeking reelection from Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg Lok Sabha constituency of Konkan.

“We will get more seats than the Mahayuti (the opposition alliance of Shiv Sena, BJP and three other parties in Maharashtra). There is no Modi wave in Maharashtra. He is a liar who has been now exposed by giving wrong figures on the development of Gujarat,” Rane said.

Rane claimed that Gujarat lagged behind Maharashtra on economic indicators. “Maharashtra with investments of Rs. 14,73, 466 crore was leading Gujarat by more than Rs. 75,000 crore. Gujarat had investments of Rs. 13,98,247 crore,” he said.

Debt against GDP in Gujarat was at a precarious 26 per cent which could have serious implications for its economy, Rane said.

“Post elections Gujarat will have no other option but to raise level of taxation as well as power tariffs. As opposed to this Maharashtra was better placed at 17 per cent debt to GDP ratio,” he said.

The Congress leader also sought to dismiss the hostility from local NCP leaders, including the MLA Deepak Kesarkar who has defied party president Sharad Pawar in opposing Rane.

“It has always been Rane versus others during the elections,” he said.

Former IPS officer, tribal leader to take on Pawar’s daughter

A former IPS officer and a tribal leader are seeking to break Pawar dynasty’s stranglehold over this Lok Sabha constituency by unseating NCP supremo’s daughter Supriya Sule when people vote on April 17.

Pawar, who represented the seat in Parliament six times, shifted himself to Madha constituency in Solapur district in 2009 and handed over the seat to Sule who had won from there with a massive margin of over 3 lakh votes in previous elections.

Seeking re-election, Sule is locked in a triangular contest against Mahadeo Jankar, a tribal leader fielded by Shiv Sena-BJP-RPI alliance in Maharashtra, and Suresh Khopde, a former IPS officer, who is Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) nominee.

The constituency, which comprises Daund, Indapur, Purandar, Bhor, Baramati and Khadakwasla assembly segments, has about 16 lakh electorate.

Representing a dominant chunk of rural voters, laced with a lone assembly segment of semi-urban populace, the seat has always been in the focus during elections for the perceived lopsided development, observers say.

“The topography of the region is not conducive to good rainfall. But no efforts have been spared by me, Pawar sahib (Sharad Pawar) or Ajit dada (Ajit Pawar who won the elections from here in 1991) to solve the problems relating to water paucity, electricity and road network to spur development of the area,” says Sule, seen as Pawar’s political heir in national politics.

For first time entrant AAP, its candidate Khopade, well- known in the state for his study on police reforms, is seeking votes to break political dynasty.

“We are here to oppose families traditionally controlling politics in the country. AAP is fighting the elections in order to change the political system and empower the common man, giving him a voice in the decision making process,” says Khopade.

Candidates have been raising the tempo with ‘padayatras’ and door-to-door canvassing in the constituency.

“This constituency presents a picture of lop-sided development with only Baramati assembly segment, which is home town of the Pawars, reaping benefits of the available MP’s local area development fund.

“Other five assembly segments are left high and dry, deprived of basic amenities such as adequate water supply and proper roads. The Pawars have failed to ensure balanced growth of the constituency,” says Jankar, who belongs to the dominating backward shepherd community in this region.

Interestingly Jankar, who represents Rashtriya Samaj Party (RSP) in the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance, had fought and lost the last Lok Sabha election from Madha against Sharad Pawar.

Banking on the general anti-Congress-NCP sentiment in the state stemming from allegations of corruption and irrigation scam, the saffron alliance is, however, hoping to win the contest this time.

“As sitting MP, Sule has hardly bothered to solve the water problem being faced by farmers in the region and offered only lip sympathy. The Pawar family has only perpetuated a dynastic domination to the detriment of the common man’s welfare,” alleges Vijay Shivtare, a Shiv Sena MLA from the region.

According to observers, though the assembly elections have seen some of the Opposition candidates winning the segments of Baramati Lok Sabha seat, when it comes to the Lok Sabha polls, the family ensures a win every time.

Some people feel being part of government important: Chavan on Rahul

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan says government experience is viewed as important in some quarters, but he does not know if Rahul Gandhi joining the government after 2009 elections would have been better for Congress’ prospects in the Lok Sabha polls.

Asked if Rahul should have joined the government earlier as it would have been beneficial to the party, Chavan said, “Well, some people feel that to get a government experience is important. Otherwise we tend to think like an NGO from outside.

“There are compulsions of running a coalition government. There are compulsions of addressing conflicting aspirations of different sections of society,” he said.

The senior Congress leader’s views came in the backdrop of Union minister Milind Deora’s recent statement that if Rahul Gandhi had joined the UPA government in 2009, it would have made a big difference to the fortunes of the party.

“So, when you sit in the government and try to analyse a question from all sides, with all the expert help that is available to you, you begin to understand the complexity of a problem which you cannot understand if you are outside the government or not in the decision making process,” Chavan said.

“The other view is that Rahul has always said that he wanted to build the party organisation. He always wanted to understand the country. He has toured extensively. So, there are two different points of view. Both have merit. I don’t know which one would have been better,” he said.

“I don’t have the advantage of comparing the other system. He could have become a minister. Indira Gandhi did become a minister without portfolio in the Lal Bahadur Shastri government for some time. But on the other hand, Rajiv Gandhi became the PM right away,” Chavan said.
