Yeddyurappa seeks to re-establish his dominance from Shimoga

Invoking the name of Narendra Modi, a mellowed B S Yeddyurappa is fighting a critical electoral battle of his career from Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency to re-establish his dominance within BJP and state politics.

In his second bid to enter Parliament from Shimoga after the failed attempt in 1991, Yeddyurappa is leaving nothing to chance though his rivals from JDS and Congress are greenhorns.

Congress and JDS are using the weapon of corruption against Yeddyurappa, whose name is often invoked by BJP’s opponents at the national level to deflate the party’s anti- graft plank.

Yeddyurappa, who has often made it clear that he was not keen on entering the arena but the party, persuaded him to do so, is invoking the name of Narendra Modi, saying his wave is here as elsewhere.

71-year-old Yeddyurappa is facing a serious challenge from JDS’ Githa Shivarajkumar, former Chief Minister late S Bangarappa’s daughter, who has described herself as “clean and fresh” candidate.

His Congress rival is a newcomer and a young party worker Manjunath Bhandari who was office bearer in KPCC at Bangalore. His candidature has left a bitter taste in the local unit, particularly with Kumar Bangarappa, son of Bangarappa, who had also tried for the ticket to contest the elections.

Shimoga seat was held by Yeddyurappa’s son B Y Raghavendra and the leader with the pan state appeal was persuaded by his party to contest the Lok Sabha polls, hoping his presence would prove beneficial to BJP. He had played spoilsport to BJP in the 2013 Assembly polls when he secured 10 per cent vote share for his Karnataka Janatha Party (KJP).

After having re-entered BJP with hard bargaining and good deal of compromise, Yeddyurappa is now trying to find his space within the organisation despite his four-decade-old association that ended when he walked out to float KJP. In this backdrop, the battle now is crucial for him.

He is seeking votes on the basis of his performance as Chief Minister, heading the first-ever BJP government in the South which went into a self-destruct mode with open infighting and corruption charges against several ministers, some even landing in jail.

He is aided by a well-oiled party machinery manned by the strong cadre base which is carrying out a well-organised campaign and his RSS background from the age of 15 standing him in good stead in organisation and management.

Building BJP in Karnataka, Yeddyurappa had crafted his political ascent that brought him the Chief Minister’s post which he lost in July 2011 after the party directed him to resign after the Lokayukta report indicted him on corruption charge linked to illegal mining.

Narendra Modi slams Mamata Banerjee, says no real parivartan in Bengal

Taking West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee head on, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi accused her of playing votebank politics and said no real ‘parivartan’ (change) has taken place in the state during TMC rule.

“When the government changed in Bengal, I thought there would be development. But nothing has happened. They are only indulging in votebank politics,” Mr. Modi told an election rally in Siliguri.

“Unless she criticises Modi, her food does not get digested,” Mr. Modi said in a sharp attack attack on Ms Banerjee, who has been hitting out at him in most of her public rallies, terming him communal and also blaming him for the Gujarat riots.

Mr. Modi’s address was in contrast to his earlier speech in Kolkata in February when he had gone soft on Ms Banerjee and had even asked the people to have “Didi in Bengal and BJP in Delhi”.

“It’s been two years since the new government took charge, but have you seen any parivartan? People have been cheated. If you have a strong and progressive-minded government in Delhi, every small thing will fall in place,” he said.

“You have seen fake parivartan, now it’s time to see the real parivartan,” Mr. Modi said.

“Mukyamantriji, aap jitne kichar uchaloge, utna jyada kamal khilega (Madam Chief Minister, the more you indulge in mudslinging, the more will the lotus bloom),” Mr. Modi said.

Mr. Modi also criticised the party on the issue of multicrore Saradha chitfund scam, and said “they must be punished.

“Those who have indulged in loot in such a short span of time, what will they do if they get more time and opportunity?” he asked in an indirect reference to allegations of involvement of some Trinamool Congress leaders in the scam.

Farooq Abdullah gains 11 years in age since 2008, AAP seeks action

National Conference (NC) President and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr Farooq Abdulla’s age has increased by 11 years within a period of five years. This is not a joke, but the truth as the affidavit filed by Dr. Farooq Abdullah before the Returning Officer Srinagar on April 7 has mentioned his age as 77 years.

But the affidavit which was filed by Dr. Farooq Abdullah in December 2008 for the assembly elections from Hazratbal had shown his age as 66 years. Now the question is whether his age is 71 years or 77 years.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has demanded that his candidature be cancelled for lying before the election authorities. In a written complaint filed before the Returning Officer Srinagar the Aam Aadmi Party has asked the election authorities to intervene into this matter and has requested the authorities to cancel his candidature.

These ATMs dispense 1 litre clean water for 30 paise

In a bid to help villagers get access to clean water, HDFC ERGO, a general and health insurance company, has introduced ‘water ATMs’ in a village in Uttar Pradesh.
Similar to a cash dispensing ATM machine, this set up installed in Seengha village in Bijnor district, will dispense pure water. Using these machines, villagers can get 1 litre pure water in 30 paise.
HDFC ERGO took the initiative of introducing these ATMs in partnership with ‘Sarvajal’ NGO as a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
Both identified Seengha village as the beginning point because they found that villagers here had installed pumps on their own to get water and they were heavily dependent on hand pumps installed by the government for meeting their water needs.
While Sarvajal is ensuring continuous supply of water and maintenance of water ATM sites, HDFC ERGO manages everything else.
Earlier, HDFC ERGO and Sarvajal had together implemented the concept successfully in Rajasthan. Their first pilot project was presented in Peeth village in Dungarpur area of Rajasthan in October last year.

Woman befriends girl on Facebook, gets duped of jewellery worth Rs 50,000

Everyone whom one befriends on Facebook may not have the friendliest intentions. Sangeeta Negi from Dehradun’s Dharampur learnt this the hard way when a girl she befriended on the social networking site, allegedly stole half a lakh rupees worth of jewellery from her.
According to a report, Sangeeta got a friend request from a girl named Jyoti who claimed to be from Delhi and befriended her. The two started talking and a while later, Jyoti reached Sangeeta’s house saying that she has come to Dehradun to meet an ailing relative.
Jyoti stayed at Sangeeta’s house for over a week, during which time Sangeeta had to leave the house to attend a wedding. On her return, she found that the jewellery from her cupboard was missing. When she asked Jyoti, she accepted that she had taken them. Sangeeta claimed that Jyoti even asked her if she could take it with her to Delhi but she refused.
Later, on March 26, Jyoti came to Sangeeta’s house once again and said that she needs to leave that same evening. After Jyoti left Sangeeta once again found her jewellery missing. After this Sangeeta registered a complaint at a police station in Nehru Colony.
“A police team has been sent to Delhi to look for the accused,” an officer told Punjab Kesari.
Sangeeta said that she does not have much information about Jyoti but has given the police Jyoti’s facebook ID which is being used for investigation. However the police say that they suspect that the ID is fake.

BJP’s manifesto is well balanced

The Bharatiya Janata Party must maintain unity at all cost if that want to get a majority. Murli Manohar Joshi must not create any negative controversy he must be very strictly told to maintain order. He will be contesting election against three time sitting Congress MP Shriprakash Jaiswal. Mr Joshi should aim to become the Vice Chancellor of some university and not aspire for any political position. Rajnath Singh had appointed Shiv Kumar as the chief election agent thereby sidelining Lalji Tandon.

Arvind Kejriwal was effectively shut up but the Delhi Police Chief in a very amicable manner. He exposed him brilliantly. Those who have not served enough in their chosen fields and shown escapist tendencies must not be taken seriously by the people. We must get it very clear that one party must be given comfortable majority for good governance otherwise the country will suffer
We have to increase our defence spending and upgrade our indigenous capability to be largely self sufficient in matter of defence equipment and weaponry.

Things which have to be imported from outside must be procured speedily by cutting bureaucratic hurdles. We must establish pragmatic ties with China without indulging in excessive statement issuance. Chinese like to work silently and with sincerity and do not like one-up-manship at all. Do not say anything to belittle them or cause them to lose face.

Navy must visit colleges to recruit talent, train them well and retain them a few years more and not retire them early because that way they will lose experienced hands. A greater engagement between Merchant Navy officers and Naval Officers is necessary to take advantage of more sea going experience and port making and leaving which merchant seamen possess by virtue of their trade.
BJP must start behaving as if they are already in power under the leadership of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. They must start talking about the contemplated and on going technical projects in the field of providing better roads ( multimodal transport), providing drinking water, providing more electric power and reducing theft and losses. People expect order and development and will reject politicking and slogan mongering. The party has already released its manifesto on the first day of the polling. The Election Commission had barred media from broadcasting the manifesto on television as election were held on that day.

Critics are saying that the BJP’s manifesto has nothing new to offer and is lifted from the document released by Modi prior to the Gujarat assembly polls. They also have been saying that its Modifesto instead of Manifesto. However, the manifesto’s underlying tone is the emphasis on development and delivery through better governance.

No agenda?

raj-uddhavEven as Maharashtra goes to polling today but Shiv Sena and MNS have not released their manifesto.

Parties like Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were busy criticising each other and are yet to release their manifesto. The first phase of polling will begin today in Maharashtra but both these parties have not bothered to publish their manifesto. Is it because both these parties don’t have any concrete agenda meant for the welfare of people? Manifesto is an important document which mentions about the work which a party will do after it comes to power. But both these parties have put the manifesto on the backburner.

Even the BJP had released its manifesto only on the first day of the polling. Questions were raised about why the party had delayed the release of its manifesto. Even the Election Commission had asked the media to refrain from broadcasting the manifesto of the party on the election day. The infighting within the party was responsible for the delay of release of the vision document. There were huge difference of opinion between BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and senior leader Murli Manohar Joshi.

The party will be releasing a supplementary manifesto for Maharashtra which will cover local issues and problems. On the other hand, Congress, NCP and AAP have already released their manifestos. The Congress has already blamed the BJP for copying its agenda and also criticised it for being anti-poor. They also added that the document is personality driven and has nothing to do with the party’s ideology.

A BJP leader spoke on the condition of anonymity and said, “Supplementary manifesto is expected to be unveiled in three-four days. But voting in Vidarbha will be completed by then; however, our candidates there have come out with their own supplementary manifestos at the local level.”

The first phase of the polling will happen in the state on April 10, in 10 constituencies of Vidarbha. While the second phase of polling in the state is on April 17 and the third on 24th.

Shiv Sena said that the manifesto release has been delayed as party leaders were busy in campaigning for the Lok Sabha election.

Senior Shiv Sena MLA Subhash Desai said, “We are working on the manifesto. The work had been delayed because leaders of the five-party ‘Mahayuti’ headed by Shiv Sena and BJP, were busy campaigning.” Desai, who represents Goregaon in the assembly, said they would try and unveil the manifesto by April 10.

A Shiv Sena leader on the condition of anonymity said that this time people will vote for the party. He said, “We want a complete overhaul in the system. We have been moving around in Maharashtra and found people fed up with the Congress-NCP government. Regardless of manifestos or promises, the people will boot out the Congress.”

On its part, the MNS, which claims to be working on a ‘blueprint’ for the state’s development, said they too were in the process of bringing out a manifesto. “We are working on it. We will try and unveil it before April 10.”

Is sanction needed to prosecute Chavan in Adarsh case, asks HC

Chavan-AdarshThe Bombay High Court on Wednesday sought to know from CBI if sanction was required to prosecute former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on corruption charges in the Adarsh Housing scam case.

Justice Sadhana Jadhav raised the query while hearing a revision petition filed by CBI seeking permission to delete Chavan’s name from the FIR in the case following refusal of grant of sanction to prosecute from Maharashtra Governor Kateekal Sankaranaryanan.

The agency had approached the high court last month after the trial court refused to delete Chavan’s name from the FIR filed by CBI in January 2011.

Chavan and 12 others were booked under section 120 (b) of the Indian Penal Code for criminal conspiracy and under various charges of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act. “Do you (CBI) need sanction to prosecute under the general law of IPC ?” Justice Jadhav asked.

CBI lawyer Hiten Venegaonkar told the court that sanction to prosecute under IPC was required as Chavan was a sitting MLA and former Chief Minister and Revenue Minister at the time when the alleged offence was committed.

“Without sanction to prosecute him (Chavan) under section 120 (b) of IPC, the agency cannot proceed to prosecute him under section 13 (1) (d) of the PC Act independently,” Venegaonkar said.

The court then issued notice to Ashok Chavan and Maharashtra government and posted the petition for hearing on June 10.

CBI had filed a chargesheet in the case against 13 people, including 55-year-old Chavan, who is contesting upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Nanded, pending sanction from the Governor. The trial court is yet to take cognisance of it.

The former Chief Minister had earlier filed a petition in the high court seeking the case to be quashed against him as CBI had no jurisdiction to probe the case as neither the state government nor the High Court had passed an order handing over probe to the central agency.

Chavan had stepped down as CM after the scam came to light in 2010.

CBI had accused Chavan of approving additional floor space index for Adarsh Society in return for two flats for his relatives. He was also charged with illegally approving, as the then Revenue Minister, allotment of 40 per cent of the flats to civilians when the Society was allegedly meant only for Kargil war widows and defence personnel.

Congress worried as MLAs Naseem Khan, Kripashankar stay away from Dutt’s campaign

DUTTCongress is worried as a “rift” in its city unit has started affecting the election campaign, especially in Mumbai North Central which is considered as the “safest” seat for the party, where sitting MP Priya Dutt is seeking a fresh term.

Senior leaders Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan and Kripashankar Singh, legislators from Chandivali and Kalina respectively, are staying away from Dutt’s campaign as they felt ignored by the MP, sources said.

Chandivali and Kalina are among six Assembly segments that constitute the North Central constituency.

According to sources, the duo did not join Dutt when she filed her nominations papers on April 1. Both leaders were also conspicuous by their absence as Dutt has hit the campaign trail through padyatras and street corner meetings.

To add to the Congress’ discomfiture is the presence of Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Farhan Azmi, son of state SP unit president Abu Asim Azmi.

When contacted, Congress city unit president Janardan Chandurkar said he had spoken to both the leaders and they have expressed their willingness to work for Dutt and to give her lead from their respective constituencies. “I don’t know what the problem is but I am resolving it at my level. I spoke to both the leaders and they told me that they have instructed their workers to join the campaign. I don’t think chief minister Prithviraj Chavan will need to intervene,” Chandurkar said.

According to sources, Khan and Singh had complained to the party leadership that they were not taken into confidence by Dutt about her campaign. Both the leaders were unavailable for comment.
