Alagiri says he won’t contest this election, predicts doom for father’s DMK

Opinion polls have predicted that M Karunanidhi’s DMK will not win in this year’s general elections, half the seats it had won in 2009. His son MK Alagiri reckons that is a generous assessment.

“It will be big if the DMK wins one or two seats,” Mr. Alagiri told. The party had won 18 last times.

Mr. Karunanidhi expelled Mr. Alagiri as follow-up action after suspending him for indiscipline in January and excluding him from his party’s list of candidates for the national elections a few weeks ago.

Mr. Alagiri, 63, the sitting MP from Madurai in south Tamil Nadu, says he will not contest the elections this time. But he plans to move court challenging his expulsion from the DMK.

“No one can say DMK doesn’t belong to me. Doesn’t mean we would go out. DMK headquarters was built using my hard work too,” he had said yesterday. Today, he said, “I will raise questions about the protection of DMK’s property.”

He also said, “I don’t care whether Stalin becomes DMK president or not.”

Mr. Alagiri and his younger brother MK Stalin had for years been engaged in a tussle over who would inherit their father’s political mantle. The older son turned into a professional renegade, transacting in a protracted and clanging campaign against his younger brother after the latter was chosen by their father as his successor.

Mr. Karunanidhi, 89, said yesterday that Mr. Alagiri was expelled because despite his suspension, he had not abstained from public criticism of the party in recent months.

Without naming his sibling, Mr. Alagiri had professed recently that his father was being influenced and misled by “traitors.”

His meeting leaders of the BJP and its allies in Tamil Nadu also reportedly irked his father; the fraternising suggested that Mr. Alagiri and his supporters were not above working against the DMK’s candidates despite their demurrals.

Digvijaya Singh is front-runner for Varanasi battle, Congress sources

The contest between Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal in Uttar Pradesh’s holy town of Varanasi may become a triangular one with Digvijaya Singh emerging as the possible Congress candidate.

Congress sources confirmed to that Mr. Singh is a front-runner among its choices for the Varanasi battle in next month’s national election, but no decision has been taken yet.

The Congress veteran had said on Monday that he was ready to contest in Varanasi.

“I am willing to contest from Varanasi, but the party has to first give me a ticket,” Mr. Singh told reporters on Monday.

The Congress has released six lists of candidates without mentioning Varanasi, betraying its dilemma over the most high profile poll battle of 2014.

Amid the buzz surrounding Digvijaya Singh, Mr. Kejriwal, who joined the Varanasi poll battle on Tuesday, told, “Let Digvijaya Singh come here if he is ready for the fight.”

Mr. Singh is seen as a candidate who can put up a credible fight against the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, in what many assume is a symbolic battle.

He has been among the Congress’ main Modi-baiters, and has more than once called Sushma Swaraj a better BJP candidate for prime minister.

The 67-year-old has not contested an election since 2003, when he banished himself from active politics after losing massively to the BJP in Madhya Pradesh after a decade in power.

He remained one of the party’s key decision-makers, however, and took charge of many states, including Uttar Pradesh. He is also seen as one of Rahul Gandhi’s advisers.

Mr. Singh’s last date with UP, as general secretary in charge of the state, was a disaster. On his watch, the Congress finished fourth in the 2012 state election despite an aggressive campaign by Mr. Gandhi.

Congress workers in Varanasi are also rooting for a local candidate, Ajay Rai, who has a strong following among upper caste voters. Mr. Rai had finished third in the last election, when he was a Samajwadi Party candidate.

The Congress had won Varanasi in 2004, but lost in 2009 to BJP’s Murli Manohar Joshi.

Was it Candy Crush? Police officer faces inquiry for playing games on mobile

A senior police official in Aligarh faces an inquiry after he was found allegedly playing video game on his mobile phone during a meeting called by the police department to review poll preparations.

IG Agra Zone Ashutosh Pandey had called a meeting Monday to discuss apparatus put in place for the ensuing elections. The matter came to light yesterday when clipping of the incident was picked up by some news channels from social media websites showing SP Crime Shakiluzzaman busy on his smart phone while the IG was directing top police officials to ensure “no breach of law and electoral code of conduct by political parties and government machinery”.

Agra Zone consists of some sensitive constituencies including Agra, Aligarh, Mainpuri and Etah. The IG said a probe has been ordered into the alleged breach of protocol to be conducted by the SP Etah, who has been asked to submit his report “within two days”.

IM operative Tehseen Akhtar sent to police custody

A Delhi court on Wednesday sent Indian Mujahideen commander Tehseen Akhtar in police remand till April 02.

Akhtar was produced here before a judge, who handed his custody to police.

Akhtar, the outlawed Indian Mujahideen’s current chief of Indian operations who is an expert in bomb-making, was arrested on Tuesday morning.

According to police sources, the Special Cell of Delhi Police told the court that they need to conduct a sustained custodial interrogation of the accused to unearth the entire terror conspiracy of the banned outfit.

Police also told the court that Akhtar was required to be confronted with one of his top associate Zia-ur-Rehman alias Waqas, a Pakistani national who was arrested on March 22, and others who were also apprehended by them.

According to Delhi Police Special Commissioner SN Srivastava, 23-year-old Akhtar was formally arrested from near Kakarvitta on the Nepal border while he was entering India. He was coming from Kathmandu.

Akhtar, once a close aide and a protégé of arrested IM’s co-founder Ahmad Siddibappa Zarar alias Yasin Bhatkal, was wanted for a series of terrorist strikes in various states, including July 7, 2013 Bodh Gaya blasts and October 27, 2013 blasts in Patna.

Police officials have described the arrest as a major breakthrough in the war against the shadowy group.

Police sources earlier told that Akhtar, a resident of Samastipur in Bihar, was part of Indian Mujahideen’s plan to create mayhem during the staggered Lok Sabha polls starting April 7.

Investigators said Akhtar, the tech-savvy terrorist, was the prime motivator tasked with developing new modules for the outfit and had also become the vital link between the IM and other radical extremist groups emerging from the banned SIMI.

Akhtar was in constant touch with Pakistani national Waqas, who was arrested on Friday from Rajasthan also by the Delhi Police.

Akhtar was reportedly involved in bomb attacks in several places since 2010, the year he reportedly joined IM. The strikes include a blast at Varanasi’s Sheetla Ghat during the evening ‘aarti’, the 2011 serial blasts in Mumbai and the twin bombings in Hyderabad in 2013.
Srivastava told a news agency that Akhtar was the one who received Pakistani national Waqas at the Kathmandu airport in September 2010 and brought him to Delhi to carry out the Jama Masjid bomb attack.

Police sources believe Akhtar was being controlled by India Mujahideen’s absconding leader Riyaz Bhatkal, who is involved in several terror attacks in India.

Interrogation of Waqas revealed that Akhtar stayed with him at Munnar in Kerala from December 2013 till mid-January.

Srivastava said Akhtar’s next plan was to change his hideout from Kathmandu to another neighbouring country for which he entered Indian Territory.

“IM’s bosses had assured him to provide shelter for the time being. But, he was unlucky. As soon as he entered Kakarvitta region, he was arrested,” Srivastava said.

Akhtar was later brought to Delhi by a special plane.

Railways not bothered about passengers safety

Tragedies highlight the loopholes in the system. The CST bound train commencing its journey from Kasara met with a tragic accident after five of its boogies were derailed in Titwala. The accident occurred at around 2. 50 pm last week. However, an accident relief train left for the accident site in Titwala only at around 3.15 pm. There was one casualty while twelve people sustained injuries. The deceased has been identified as Dhaval Mayur Lodaya, an 18 year old male. However, nearly a week after the tragedy occurred, shocking revelations and protests carried out by Dhaval’s family and friends point at the insensitivity of the authorities to the accident victims and the medical negligence in the form of ambulances reaching late at the accident site to provide relief.

Dhaval’s friends had decided to provide him justice by carrying out a signature campaign in trains. They have also filed a PIL against the railways for not availing safety measures to its passengers. The signature campaign was carried out with the intention of meeting their demands of providing first aid, stretchers in stations. They have demanded to make ambulances available outside every railway station. They press to make available medical aid box inside railway coaches or with the motorman. They also want ambulances to replace the space occupied by hawkers outside railway stations.

Atul Rane, the PRO of Central Railway agreed that if ambulances were stationed outside the station, then help would have reached Dhaval on time. He said on being asked that Dhaval could have been saved had he been taken to the hospital within 15 minutes. He however, refused to blame the railway authorities stating that the accident had not occurred at a railway station. So the victim had to be identified with the help of passengers. However, on a positive note, ambulances will be deployed on 26 locations between Churchgate and Virar on the Western railway.

Hope the railway authorities deal with this issue seriously. Everyday, accidents occur in locals. If first aid and ambulances reach victims faster, then hundreds of lives can be saved. Besides, necessary steps should be taken to curb accidents if not prevent them completely. Locals are considered to be the lifeline of Mumbai city. Everyday, lakhs of commuters travel by this medium. Ensuring their safety is the responsibility of the government and the railway authorities alike. Let’s ensure that another Dhaval like incident doesn’t take place again. A commuter should not die just because help does not reach him in time. It is indeed shameful.

Kejriwal can’t pose a challenge for Modi

Narendra Modi has made plenty of efforts in mobilizing the masses and Baba Vishwanath will certainly bless him and make him victorious. No candidate will be able to challenge Modi because he stands for India and its citizens. Besides Baba Vishwanath, he must also visit “Kalbhairaw” who is known as “Kashi ke kotwal” and of course, Hanumanji at Sankatmochan temple.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal will contest against Narendra Modi from Varanasi. If Kejriwal challenges Modi then he is likely to be defeated and further cursed by Shankarji for creating impediments in the path of national renaissance. “Baba sirf ashirwad hi nahin dete, shaap bhi dete hain”.

After emerging victorious, Narendra Modi will peform the following tasks:

1)   Create a Ministry of social and family development by appointing either Meenakshi Lekhi, Sushmaji, Nirmala Sitaraman or Uma Bharti as its head.

2)   Providing basic health care will his government’s top priority. Building good roads for multimodal transport, development of Ports and Shipping ( International and Coastal) is to be given priority considering our very long coast line. A person belonging to technical background should be entrusted with this ministry. Shatrughan Sinha, T. R Baalu and G.K. Vasan only spread corruption and favoritism in this ministry.

3)   Providing potable water and electric power to Indian citizens is a massive task which must be undertaken at any cost. An eminent industrialist (even if he is not an MP) should be made incharge. A person from Reliance group, Adani group, Tata or persons like Deepak Parekh should be persuaded to join. Minister will be one person but a consortium of industrialists and financial experts be created to help and guide the minister regularly.

4)   Kiran Bedi should be made Home Minister. Amit Shah is the most suitable candidate but I think Modi will choose him as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

5)   Shah Nawaz Hussain or Rajiv Pratap Rudi can become Defence Minister because all three services need an honest, dedicated and capable person who can expedite decisions. Modi must oversee this ministry personally. General VK Singh should not be made a minister yet and the same applies to Satyapal Singh. These gentlemen must perform well as MPs and rewards will follow later.

6)   Murli Manohar Joshi must serve with humility and dedication. He scored poor marks by hesitating to step down for Modi from Varanasi. Such selfishness at this age is unacceptable.

7)   Rajnath Singh (if he wins) should be made agriculture minister because he hails from rural background. Singh may also might be suitable for Defence Ministry if he likes elevation, but not for Home Ministry because he will be seen as partisan.

Development of the family and community is vital for the nation’s progress and its citizens. Family violence destroys lives. More and more women’s organizations should be mobilized to promote a healthy, happy and responsible family.

“Hame samaj banana hai, desh swayamev ban jayega”.

Indian Mujahideen finished?

Indian-mujahideen12After the arrest of Tehseen Akhtar alias Monu head of India Mujahideen operations by the Delhi Police questions are being raised whether it’s the end of the road for the terror outfit? Akhtar has been known for executing several terror attacks in the country. Akhtar reportedly worked closely with IM founder Yaseen Bhatkal since 2010, and after the latter’s arrest, he led the IM operations in India and allegedly masterminded the October 2013 Patna rally blast which was addressed by BJP leader Narendra Modi.

Tehseen Akhtar belonged to the Darbhanga module of the banned terrorist outfit and was heading IM operations in India after Yasin Bhatkal’s arrest in August last year. Akhtar is being questioned by a joint team of Delhi Police Special Cell and central intelligence agencies.

Mohammad Zarar Siddibappa alias Yasin Bhatkal, after his arrest on August 29 last year, had told investigators that Akhtar, 23, was the operational India head of the IM, dealing directly with Karachi-based top IM operative Riyaz Bhatkal.

The National Investigation Agency had declared a reward of Rs. 10 lakh for information on Akhtar’s whereabouts. He is originally a resident of Maniarpur village in Samastipur district of Bihar.
“Tehseen stayed in India for a few months and was planning terror attacks during Lok Sabha polls after receiving lakhs of rupees in hawala transactions,” said a source.

The Delhi Police arrested four Indian Mujahideen terrorists in Rajasthan, who were planning a terror attack during Lok Sabha elections. The police made the arrest after they got specific input from the Intelligence Bureau.

The arrested terrorists were identified as Waqas, Mahroof, Mehraj and Saquib.

Tehseen alias Monu was also involved in the 2010 bombing at Varanasi’s Sheetla Ghat during the evening ‘aarti’, the cooker bomb blast outside Jama Masjid in Delhi the same year, the 2011 serial blasts in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar, Opera House and Dadar West – as well as the 2012 low-intensity blasts in Pune, the twin bombings in Hyderabad in 2013 and the Bodh Gaya blasts in 2013.

All these terror attacks left a total of 43 dead and 253 injured.

A Maharashtra ATS official on the condition of anonymity said, “We cannot say that Indian Mujahideen will weaken after Tehseen’s arrest as the outfit has been regularly recruiting people. They are always in contact with SIMI people and their main founders are located in Karachi. If one member is arrested then he is replaced by another. Hence we cannot say that Indian Mujahideen will cease to exist.”

Prithviraj Chavan calls Modi a ‘dictator’, says he will be harmful for country

cmMaharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday slammed BJP’s Prime Ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi and dubbed him as a “dictator”.

The BJP has nominated Modi as its candidate for Prime Minister’s post, but the Gujarat CM has so far behaved as a “hukumshah” (dictator), he said. Chavan was addressing a joint Congress-NCP campaign rally here in southern Maharashtra.

The Congress leader said Modi coming to power at the Centre would be “harmful” for the country. Chavan took a dig at BJP’s high-tech poll campaign, saying the saffron party was taking people for a ride in the name of technology.

The alliance between Sharad Pawar’s NCP and Congress has been forged to keep communal forces out of power, the Chief Minister said. Congress-led UPA Government has taken several measures for the downtrodden and in the next few years no one will remain below the poverty line, Chavan said.

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who is contesting from Solapur Lok Sabha seat, also spoke on the occasion.

Sharad Pawar mocks Modi, questions his ‘knowledge’ of history

sharad_pawarNCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday took a dig at Narendra Modi over his public gaffes and said BJP’s PM nominee lacked accurate knowledge of history of the country.

Addressing a joint rally organised in support of Congress and NCP candidates, namely Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil, Pawar also raked up the 2002 communal riots and appealed to people to “prevent communal forces from tarnishing secular fabric of the country”.

“Modi said in his Vardha rally that Quit India movement was launched from there… How can he run the Central government when he does not even know correct history of the country?” Pawar said.

Shinde filed his nomination as Congress candidate from his home turf Solapur while Mohite-Patil as NCP nominee from Madha seat, represented by Pawar who became a Rajya Sabha member recently.

In an apparent reference to the killing of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri and others in a massacre in Gulbarg Society in Gujarat during 2002 riots, Pawar said, “..An MP and other people were hacked to death despite the place of incident being merely 20 kms away from residence of a minister.”

The NCP chief said the “communal forces” were trying to vitiate the atmosphere by running divisive election campaign. “…Communal forces are trying hard to control the country and to hurt the secular fabric of India…that should be averted,” he said.

Pawar said the Congress-NCP combine had “relieved farmers of paying huge debt and also taken steps to benefit the common man”.
