Karunanidhi under grip of betrayers, says Alagiri

Putting to rest speculations, suspended DMK leader MK Alagiri on Monday ruled out floating his own outift but vowed to save his father and party chief M Karunanidhi from the “grip of betrayers”, a veiled attack on his younger brother MK Stalin.

“I am with DMK… There is no need for me to start a new party by name Kalaingar DMK, when the present DMK is itself Kalaingar DMK,” the sulking former Union minister told a large gathering of his supporters at a consultative meeting.

Karunanidhi was under the grip of “betrayers and what is more important is saving the DMK President from them, than saving the party itself…This is my first work,” he said apparently attacking Stalin, party Treasurer and considered the political heir to Karunanidhi.
The meeting was held in the backdrop of Alagiri, who is the sitting MP from here, and his supporters being denied tickets to contest the Lok Sabha polls and amid speculation that he might part ways with the DMK.

Stating that he had been “unfairly vilified” and suspended, Alagiri alleged Karunanidhi was being not allowed to discharge his functions as the party President.

He, however, regretted that the root cause of all problems, including his suspension, was controversial posters put up by his followers, who turned up in large numbers at the meeting.

“You have pasted such posters out of affection for me. Your posters caused all the problems. My supporters should stop posting such posters,” the suspended DMK South Zone organising secretary said. The posters put up in connection with his birthday in January had led to “misunderstanding”, he said.

“The party should have taken such posters in the right spirit” and tried to rectify if there was grumbling and dissatisfaction among the cadres. But they made it a big problem and complicated it due to ego, Alagiri said.

Alagiri’s speech indicated his intention to get back the influence he wielded in the party. Earlier, speakers at the meeting rued that the hardwork of cadres was not respected by the party high command who they accused of being after money.

“We should release the party from the grip of such persons. Even district secretaries of the party only respected money and not hard work,” a cadre said.

The cadres also sought Alagiri’s permission to rescue the party from the present high command.

Alagiri was highly critical of the choice of DMK candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in Theni, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram in the southern Tamil Nadu, saying “I am sure Kalaingar did not select them. Candidate selection is the work of some other person,” he said.

AAP to focus on unconventional campaign in Gujarat due to fund crunch

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the toddler among big parties in Gujarat, has decided to go ahead with a low-profile political campaign for the Lok Sabha polls using unconventional ways to woo voters including street plays and youth internships, due to fund crunch.

Low donations in comparison to biggies like Congress and BJP, has desisted the fledgling outfit to approach people through traditional methods like posters, advertisements on TV, Radio or print media in a big way.

The Arvind Kejriwal led party is aspiring to emerge as the third alternative in the Narendra Modi-ruled state.

“We are Aam Aadmi having less funds. We will launch our political campaign in very low profile manner in form of street plays from next week,” said AAP’s state convener Sukhdev Patel.

“Like other big parties, we cannot afford to advertise through electronic or print media as we cannot bear the high expenses,” he said.

Apart from the traditional forms like door-to-door campaign the party will also hold Nukkad charchas, Mohalla Sabhas and an internship programme for youths,” Mr Patel said.

The party claims to have planned a low profile campaign to maintain proximity with the common man.

“In Delhi election campaign, we launched an internship programme for students which met with great success. We will follow that model here in Gujarat,” party spokesperson Harshil Nayak said.

“We have launched the same programme here and some students have responded. We will also give them a small reward in form of an appreciation certificate,” he further said.

“They help us as per their abilities in various sectors. Likewise we will rope in boys who are good in accounts so they will help the party in maintaining accounts. We have also found some young software engineers… they will help the party in maintaining website,” he explained.

“We will throng the streets soon by presenting creative dramas, for which a team of 15 young people has been working hard on,” Mr. Nayak said.

“This way, we can also reach out to youths who are in majority among the total population,” he said on the political campaign.

“Through the students’ internship programme we can also reach to their families in a cost effective manner, without spending a penny on TV or radio ads,” he said.

Political commentator Dinesh Shukla considered this move as an attempt to look different from the two national parties.

“They are known to take unconventional ways to maintain their unique identity,” Mr. Shukla said.

No sign missing Malaysian jet was on a 9/11 type attack: Khurshid

While there are some reports that the missing Malaysian jet MH 370 was headed for a 9/11 style attack on India, Minister of External Affairs Salman Khurshid has said that India had not got any indications as yet for such an attack. “I don’t think we have gone so far. Security agencies would look at all possibilities,” he said.

However, he maintained that the security agencies will probe all angles assuring that India will put in all its efforts to help in the rescue operation. “We will give them the essential just give them the back up that they need in terms of man power, vessels, equipment. India did provide the largest number of ships and other vessels. We will continue to do so to the best of our abilities, but the operation will be led by them,” he said.

“First it was focus area which was sea searching and rescue mission, they then expanded it with more information. They looked at different trajectories. Finally they have concluded that the search should also be west wards which is over the Indian ocean,” he said speaking about the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian authorities have confirmed that the pilot spoke to air traffic control after a signalling system was disabled on the jet, without referring to any trouble. This comes even as suspicions grow of possible pilot complicity and fears of a possible hijack.

The Malaysian PM had on Sunday hinted at foul play saying someone probably deliberately diverted the plane from its flight path from Kuala Lampur to Beijing. A member of the Royal Malaysian Police has confirmed that a flight simulator was recovered from the flight captain’s home. The simulator is being analysed by experts.

Malaysia has asked India for technical assistance on corroborating possible flight.

Bhagoriya Mela, where boys and girls elope after choosing life partner

Bhil and Bhilala tribal groups who are settled in Western Nimar, Jhabua, Dhar, Badwani and Alirajpur areas of Madhya Pradesh welcomed their favourite occassion ‘Bhagoriya Mela’.

Bhagoriya mela starts a week before Holi. It’s also known as Vivaah Bazaar (Marriage market) as girls and boys gather at the different Bhagoriya haats to look for a life partner. When they feel they have decided who they want to get married to, they just smear gulal on them or offer them paan, which is considered as a way of proposing. If the other side is interested, they have to reciprocate back in the same way. If both sides show interest, it’s deemed as they have accepted each other. They immediately run away from the spot and get married.

Bhagoriya mela has everything that any mela would have- from food stalls to joyrides. However, the occasion is particularly famous among boys and girls who find a match here and get married. Later the society accepts them as a married couple.

There are also times when couple in love wait for this mela to run away, the report said.

Before independence, this festival was that of bloodshed. Enemies used to challenge each other openly to come and fight at Bhagoriya mela. Lot of lives were lost. However, later due to awareness and administration’s strictness the mela assumed a new meaning altogether.

Ramdev does a U-turn, denies saying Modi in a hurry to become PM

Less than 24-hours after saying that Bharatiya Janata Party’s Narendra Modi is in a hurry to become the Prime Minister, Yoga guru Ramdev denied making any allegations. He in fact, blamed the media for spreading false reports. “I have not made any comment about Modi being in a hurry to become PM. This is a wrong allegation made by the media,” he clarified.

Ramdev had on Sunday, voiced his strong objection to some of the candidates being fielded by the BJP and its allies and had warmed that he would support the party only if they cleaned up their act. “BJP is overenthusiastic about winning the general elections this time,” Ramdev said adding that it needed to be patient and that there was resentment within the party due to “announcement of candidature of some persons”.

The yoga guru had also said his support to the saffron party and its prime ministerial candidate was based on specific issues. However, he said he was confident that NDA would get an absolute majority, and stated that there was no alternative to Modi now.

“The people were fed up with misrule, corruption and anarchy of the Congress-led UPA government,” he had said.

Muslim votes will be the deciding factor

After the delimitation of the old Dahanu constituency the Bhiwandi constituency was formed which is ruled by the Congress. In this constituency the Shiv Sena, Bharatiya Janta Party and Shiv Sena has increased their foothold in rural area. Suresh Tawre, the sitting Member of Parliament was supposed to get re-nominated but the Congress has issued ticket to Vishwanath Patil. The BJP is yet to field their candidates from this constituency. AAP has nominated Jalaludin Ansari while Samajwadi Party will declare its candidate within few days. The MNS has fielded Sanjay Mhatre. Congress will have to face defeat if the Muslim community supports AAP or SP.

In the 2009, Lok Sabha election, the BJP had assured Shiv Sena of providing a seat from the Kalyan constituency. After the delimitation the Kalyan seat was allotted to Shiv Sena while the BJP planned to field candidates from Bhiwandi constituency. After getting new constituency BJP was unable to find a able candidate to contest election. Later the party issued ticket to Jagannath Patil a Dombivali resident but he had to suffer defeat by a margin of 40,000 votes at the hands of Congress candidate Suresh Tawre. In the 2009 Lok Sabha election, MNS candidate Devraj Mhatre had managed to secure more than lakh votes whereas Shiv Sena candidate Vishwanath Patil could only manage 70,796 votes. Since there are a sizeable number of Muslim voters in this constituency hence the party had taken a decision to field Muslim candidate. Mujhafar Hussain name came up for discussion but he is already a Member of Legislative Council. Since he was defeated in the assembly election hence he was denied a ticket by the party.

Jaganath Patil, former district president Madhukar Patil, former MLA Digambar Vishe, Omprakash Sharma, Ananta Bhoir, Bharat Patil are in fray to receive tickets from BJP. The major fight will occur between the BJP and Congress. The Bhiwandi rural, Shahpur, Murbad areas comprise a large chunk of voters belonging to Agri Kunbi and Tribal. Since voters belonging to Kunbi community support Congress hence there is a possibility that the party will win from this constituency.

Bhiwandi rural, Vishnu Savra (BJP), Shahpur, Daulat Daroda (Shiv Sena), Bhiwandi (W), Abdul Momin (SP), Bhiwandi (E), Rupesh Mhatre (Shiv Sena), Kalyan (W), Prakash Bhoir (MNS), Murbad- Kishan Kathore (NCP) are the assembly leaders from this constituency.

Statistics of 2009 Lok Sabha election-

Suresh Tawre, Congress – (1,82,789)
Jagganath Patil, BJP – (1,41,425)
Devraj Mhatre, MNS – (1,07,090)

7 killed, 4 hurt in building collapse; more casualties feared

building-collapse12Seven people were killed and four injured after a seven-storey building collapsed in Santacruz on Friday, officials said fearing more casualties.

The Shankarlok building located in Yashwant Nagar near Grand Hyatt Hotel collapsed this afternoon and the dilapidated structure fell on the adjacent chawl, trapping many under the debris, a senior BMC official said.

He, however, did not specify the number of people.

The collapsed building was served demolition notice three times in 2007, 2008 and 2010, he said. “Since it was a dilapidated building, notice was served thrice. However, the matter went to court and the demolition was stayed,” the official said.

While it was officially uninhabited, some families were living there illegally, said rescue officials.
According to fire brigade officials, a large portion of the dilapidated building near the Grand Hyatt hotel fell on an adjoining slum area, trapping some of its residents.

Dozens of rescuers scoured the site in search of anyone trapped under the wreckage of the building, located in a densely populated area of the city and surrounded by other structures which were hit with debris.

He said there were three families living in the building. “All BMC rules were followed. However, the residents went to the court,” he said.

The injured have been admitted to a nearby civic hospital, an official at the BMC disaster management cell said.

Rescue operations by fire brigade personnel and the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) was on till late in the evening and there could be more casualties, the official said.

“This tragedy could have been avoided. We need laws that give more powers to the municipal corporation for acting in time against such structures,” said Mumbai Mayor Sunil Prabhu.

Two of the deceased were identified as Chandanben Kantibhai Patel (50) and Sudha Sridharan (32).

Court sends Yasin Bhatkal to 14 days police custody

Yasin_BhatkalA court on Friday ordered Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal, who is allegedly involved in the German Bakery bomb blast case, to 14 days of police custody.

Assistant Police Commissioner of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Shantaram Tayde produced Yasin Bhatkal in the court of Additional Sessions Judge S D Dharne.

Bhatkal is the key suspect in the German Bakery attack on February 13, 2010, which killed 17 people and injured 64.

After watching CCTV camera footage, investigating agencies accused Bhatkal of being involved in the blast.

Asked by the court if Bhatkal had any complaints against the police, he replied in the negative. When the court asked him if he needed a lawyer, he replied in the affirmative.

As a lawyer is needed to give Bhatkal judicial remand, advocate Indrapreet Gil showed his consent to become his lawyer.

Public prosecutor Raja Thakre demanded police custody for Bhatkal, arguing the police still have to probe other crimes which the accused had allegedly committed when he absconded.

Thakre argued the police are yet to investigate the source of the RDX brought by Bhatkal, adding the police might get information about the other absconders from him.

Thakre said the police are yet to study the communication system in Indian Mujahideen. Bhatkal was arrested from Indo-Nepal border on August 28 last year, after being on the run for almost eight years.

Sena leaders meet Guv demanding better aid to hail-hit farmers

Shiv-Sena-MLC-Diwakar-RaoteShiv Sena leaders on Friday met Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan demanding better compensation for hailstorm affected farmers and immediate suspension of loan recovery.

The Sena delegation led by senior party leader Diwakar Raote met the Governor at Raj Bhavan and demanded a compensation between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 25, 000 per hectare to farmers whose crop has been damaged by the recent hailstorm.

The delegation sought immediate suspension of debt recovery from the affected farmers, pending announcement of a loan waiver after the elections.

The delegation comprising Rajya Sabha member Anil Desai, Anil Parab and Neelam Gorhe also requested the Governor to visit some of the hailstorm-affected areas in the state.

The Governor assured the delegation that he will discuss the matter with the Chief Minister. The delegation also requested the Governor to recommend the name of noted social reformer Appasaheb Dharmadhikari for an honorary doctorate to the University of Mumbai in recognition to his services to society.

Shiv Sena hits out at Arvind Kejriwal, calls him ‘natakwala’

The Shiv Sena on Friday hit out at Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, calling him a natakwala.

In an editorial in its mouthpiece Saamna, the Shiv Sena asked, “Shouldn’t Arvind Kejriwal be thrown in a Worli gutter as he also says that all parties be thrown in garbage can?”

“Kejriwal is a natakwala who broke laws in Mumbai,” the editorial said further, commenting on the chaos caused by the unruly behaviour of some AAP workers when their party chief travelled by an auto and then a local train on the first day of his Maharashtra tour on Wednesday.

AAP workers had violated traffic as well as other rules, and damaged equipment at the Churchgate station on Wednesday. An FIR has been filed against Kejriwal in connection with the mayhem.

The Shiv Sena also tried to put the AAP chief in the dock by asking why his one-time mentor Anna Hazare has ditched him.

Why has Anna’s affection lessened? Why did the guru ditch the shishya? The party asked in its mouthpiece.

It may be noted that the two went their separate ways after Kejriwal decided to form a political party in order to “cleanse the system”. Anna said he would always remain apolitical.

Of late, the social activist has minced no words in expressing that he no more supports the activist-turned-politician.
