Maharashtra Nurses Stand Firm: Strike Continues Until Written Orders Are Issued 2

The indefinite strike by more than 30,000 nurses across Maharashtra entered its fifth day on Tuesday, as the Maharashtra State Nurses Association refused to end the agitation without official written orders from the government. This comes despite a high-level meeting with Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif, where the government agreed in principle to key demands, including scrapping contractual appointments and upgrading the designation of nurses to nursing officers.

However, the association has made it clear that the protest will continue until these assurances are formally notified and a follow-up meeting is held with the Commissioner of the Medical Education Department.

The ongoing strike, which began on July 18, has received strong backing from the State Government Group-D (Class IV) Employees Federation. Core demands include the immediate cancellation of the contractual hiring process, 100% permanent recruitment, timely promotions to fill thousands of vacancies, and correction of long-pending salary anomalies under the Seventh Pay Commission.

Nurses also expressed frustration over the state’s repeated neglect of two sets of recommendations submitted by the Bakshi Committee since 2017, which sought to resolve pay disparities among staff nurses, sister-in-charges, and nursing tutors.

The strike has gained further momentum following the June 6, 2025, government circular announcing fresh contractual appointments—a move that had previously triggered a 10-day strike in 2022 before being rolled back. Nurses argue that this latest development once again disrespects their dedicated service, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when they served as critical frontline workers.

'You Want 12 Cr, BMW After 18-Month Marriage?': SC Slams Educated Woman Over Alimony Demand 4

The Supreme Court on Tuesday delivered a sharp rebuke to a Mumbai woman who demanded ₹12 crore, a BMW, and a house as alimony after just 18 months of marriage. Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai questioned the rationale behind such demands, especially from a highly educated woman with professional experience.

“You are so educated. You should earn for yourself and shouldn’t be asking for support,” CJI Gavai told the woman during the hearing. The court learned that she holds an MBA degree and has worked in the IT sector, making her qualified for employment in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. “You’re in demand. Why don’t you work also?” the CJI asked.

The woman’s hefty alimony request was contested on the grounds that the marriage was short-lived and that her estranged husband, who has filed for annulment, claims she suffers from schizophrenia. The Chief Justice also questioned the woman’s demand for a luxury car, saying, “You had a marriage for just 18 months. And now you also want a BMW?”

According to court proceedings reported by Bar and Bench, the CJI remarked, “Either you get a flat free of all encumbrances or nothing. When you are highly educated and decide not to work out of your own volition…”

The apex court’s stance echoes a similar view taken by the Delhi High Court earlier this year. In March 2025, Justice Chandra Dhari Singh ruled that Section 125 of the CrPC, which provides for maintenance, is not meant to encourage idleness, especially when the woman has the ability to earn.

Drunk Man Brutally Assaults Receptionist at Kalyan Clinic; CCTV Footage Sparks Outrage 6

A shocking incident unfolded at a private clinic in Kalyan on the evening of July 21, where a drunken man identified as Gokul Jha violently attacked a young female receptionist after she refused him entry as the doctor was attending to another patient. The disturbing act, captured on the clinic’s CCTV camera, shows Jha repeatedly punching the receptionist, dragging her by the hair, and physically assaulting her without mercy.

The receptionist, who sustained severe injuries to her neck, chest, and legs, is currently undergoing treatment at Janaki Hospital. Dr. Moin Sheikh expressed grave concerns about the extent of her trauma, revealing that the possibility of paralysis has not been ruled out, and she remains under close medical observation.

The accused, Gokul Jha—who has multiple prior cases of robbery and assault in the Kolshewadi and Ulhasnagar areas—was tracked down in the Newali area of Ambernath. He was apprehended by MNS Deputy Mayor Yogesh Gavanhe and party member Deepak Karande and handed over to the Manpada police in Dombivli. His brother, Ranjit Jha, was also taken into custody.

Authorities suspect that Gokul was also involved in extortion activities, allegedly collecting payments from hawkers in the area. Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende confirmed that further interrogation is underway, and the police are determined to ensure strict legal action against the accused after their court hearing in Kalyan.

Pit Bull Mauls 11-Year-Old in Mumbai; Owner Arrested After Shocking Video Goes Viral 8

In a disturbing incident from Mumbai’s Mankhurd area, an 11-year-old boy was attacked by a pit bull, leading to the arrest of the dog’s owner, police said on Sunday. The attack, which occurred on Thursday night in the eastern suburbs, sparked outrage after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

According to police, the accused, 43-year-old Sohail Hasan Khan, allegedly let his pit bull loose on the child who was playing inside a parked autorickshaw in a residential neighborhood. The boy sustained injuries to his chin from the dog bite.

The viral video captured the horrifying moments of the attack, showing Khan laughing while the dog mauled the child, with bystanders appearing to find amusement in the brutal act.

Following a complaint filed by the boy’s father, a case was registered against Khan under relevant sections of the IPC. He was arrested on Friday and subsequently released after being served a legal notice.

Bihar Assembly Erupts in Anti-SIR Uproar on First Day of Monsoon Session 10

The inaugural day of the monsoon session in the Bihar Assembly witnessed dramatic scenes as opposition parties erupted in protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Members of the CPI(ML) Liberation, part of the INDIA bloc, arrived dressed in black kurtas to mark their opposition to what they allege is a politically motivated move to delete names from the voter list.

CPI(ML) Legislature Party Leader Mehboob Alam claimed the Election Commission’s directive for SIR aims to unfairly disenfranchise large sections of voters to benefit the ruling NDA ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. “We will oppose this—from the House to the streets (sadan se sadak tak),” Alam declared.

As the session commenced, opposition legislators stood up in protest, chanting slogans against SIR and demanding that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar address the recent rise in violent crimes. AIMIM MLA Akhtarul Iman, whose party is eyeing a spot in the INDIA bloc, stormed into the well of the House, shouting slogans before being sternly reprimanded by Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav.

The uproar continued until proceedings were adjourned for the day following obituary references.

Landslide Hits Vaishno Devi Track Amid Heavy Rains, 10 Injured and Yatra Halted 12

A massive landslide struck the old track leading to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on Monday morning, leaving 10 people injured, including five pilgrims. The incident occurred around 8:30 am near Gulshan Ka Langar, close to Banganga, the starting point of the yatra. The landslide, triggered by relentless rainfall over the region, caused a booking office and an overhead iron structure to collapse under the debris.

Authorities immediately suspended the pilgrimage till 1 pm as a safety precaution. According to officials, the injured included three critically wounded — Uppan (70) and his wife K Radha (66) from Chennai, and Rajinder Bhalla (70) from Haryana — who were admitted to Narayan Hospital. Another pilgrim, Leela Raikwar (56) from Uttar Pradesh, is undergoing treatment at the community health centre in Katra, while others, including locals Nikhil Thakur and Vicky Sharma, were treated and discharged after first aid.

Officiating CEO of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and District Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya, who rushed to the site, confirmed that a full-scale rescue and debris clearance operation was launched immediately. The joint effort involved local volunteers, police, CRPF, SDRF teams, and shrine board staff, with earth-movers deployed to expedite rescue work.

Eyewitness Nikhil Thakur recounted the moment disaster struck: “I was inside the booking office when stones started hitting the iron roof. We alerted others and ran out just in time.” He said the number of pilgrims was relatively low due to the ongoing heavy rains.

The Meteorological Department reported Katra received 184.2 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours ending Monday morning. Meanwhile, another landslide on Sunday night blocked the new track near Himkoti, with restoration efforts still underway.

Bombay HC Acquits All in 7/11 Mumbai Train Blasts Case, Slams 'Utter Failure' of Prosecution 14

In a historic judgment, the Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all 12 men convicted in the 2006 Mumbai train bombings, citing a total collapse of the prosecution’s case. The division bench of Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak said it was simply fulfilling its judicial duty while delivering a verdict that dismantled the earlier convictions handed down by a special court in 2015.

The court declared that the prosecution had “utterly failed” to prove the charges against the accused. It observed that the type of explosives used in the blasts was not even established, and the so-called evidence—including witness testimonies and recovered materials—lacked credibility or legal standing.

“This is our duty as judges,” the bench remarked in court, responding to senior advocate Yug Chaudhary’s comments that the ruling restored faith in both the judiciary and humanity. Chaudhary, who represented some of the acquitted men, said the 12 had spent 19 years in jail for a crime they did not commit. “This judgment is a symbol of hope in times to come,” he added.

Senior advocate S. Murlidhar, also appearing for the defence, thanked the court for its fair and patient hearing. A former judge himself, Murlidhar pointed to a broader concern, alleging a pattern of communal bias in the handling of terror investigations.

The court refused to confirm the 2015 special court judgment that had sentenced five of the accused to death and the remaining seven to life imprisonment. The blasts on July 11, 2006, killed more than 180 people and injured hundreds as seven bombs exploded on Mumbai’s suburban trains in a coordinated attack.

The appeals had stagnated in the legal system for nearly a decade, having been listed before 11 different benches without resolution. In 2024, Ehtesham Siddiqui—one of the men sentenced to death—petitioned the court for an urgent hearing. His plea led to the formation of a special bench to hear the matter.

After hearing daily arguments for five months, the bench reserved its order on January 31 this year and delivered the verdict on July 15, finally bringing closure to one of India’s most controversial terror cases.

Modi Declares Monsoon Session a 'Vijay Utsav' as Operation Sindoor Hits Terror Epicentre 16

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed the Monsoon session of Parliament as a “Vijay Utsav” (Victory Festival), celebrating the Indian armed forces’ resounding success in Operation Sindoor, which he said achieved its objectives with 100 percent precision. Speaking to the media before the session began, Modi lauded India’s military might and the swift strikes that dismantled terror hideouts across the border in under 22 minutes.

He commended the multi-party delegations that visited several countries post-operation to expose Pakistan’s direct involvement in terrorism. The prime minister expressed hope that MPs from all sides would echo the national sentiment in Parliament with a unified voice, reflecting strength, unity, and pride in India’s defence capabilities.

Modi emphasized that the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam had shaken the world and brought renewed global attention to terrorism and its epicentre. He asserted that Operation Sindoor not only shattered terror camps but also showcased the power of Made in India defence technology to the international community.

The PM also addressed the decline of naxalism, describing how once-violent red corridors are now transforming into green growth zones. With a tone of conviction, he stated that many districts formerly under naxal influence are now breathing freely under the protection of the Constitution.

Highlighting India’s economic turnaround, Modi noted that while the country was once among the “fragile five,” it is now on the cusp of becoming the third-largest economy. He also praised the recent achievement of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, who became the first Indian to fly the tricolour at the International Space Station, calling it a proud moment for every citizen.

Asserting that peace and development have marched forward together over the past decade, Modi expressed confidence that this Monsoon session would serve as a platform to reinforce India’s unity, strength, and progress.

Slogans Stall Parliament: Opposition Demands Debate on 'Operation Sindoor' 18

The Monsoon session of Parliament opened on a stormy note Monday as the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon following intense protests from opposition members demanding a discussion on ‘Operation Sindoor’—India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Soon after obituary references were made, the Congress-led opposition rose in protest, pressing for an immediate debate on the recent strikes carried out by Indian armed forces against Pakistan-based terror infrastructure.

Speaker Om Birla attempted to maintain order, assuring that all matters—including Operation Sindoor—could be taken up after the scheduled Question Hour. “The House will run as per rules. Members will be allowed to raise issues if proper notice is given,” he said firmly.

Emphasizing the need to uphold parliamentary decorum, Birla warned members against sloganeering and flashing placards. “You may protest outside the House, but here we must respect procedure and public expectation,” he added.

Despite the Speaker’s repeated assurances, the opposition remained defiant. Congress MPs moved into the well of the House, while others shouted slogans from their seats. With chaos escalating, proceedings were suspended barely 20 minutes after they began at 11 am.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi were present during the brief session.

Before the uproar, the House paid homage to eight former MPs who recently passed away, as well as victims of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and the June 12 plane crash in Ahmedabad.

Speaker Birla also lauded Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s successful 18-day space mission and congratulated ISRO for the historic feat. A dedicated session to discuss the space mission will be held later in the session.

'Patak Patak' vs 'Dubo Dubo': Dubey–Thackeray Slugfest Turns Political Theatre Ahead of BMC Polls 20

Maharashtra’s political discourse plunged to a new low this week as BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and MNS chief Raj Thackeray traded open threats, transforming a regional issue into a national spectacle.

The verbal slugfest began when Dubey, during a public speech, declared, “Patak patak ke maarenge,” aimed squarely at Raj Thackeray — a pointed response to the MNS’s historical targeting of North Indian migrants in Maharashtra.

Thackeray fired back at a Mumbai rally, saying, “Dubey, tum Mumbai me aajao, Mumbai ke samundar mein dubo dubo ke maarenge,” reigniting the volatile debate over Marathi identity versus migrant influence in the state.

This isn’t the first time Thackeray has fanned linguistic and cultural tensions. The MNS’s aggressive stance on Marathi pride famously made headlines during the 2008 attacks on North Indian candidates at railway recruitment centers in Mumbai.

The timing of the exchange is politically charged. With the BMC elections around the corner, Dubey’s statement appears to be a strategic move to consolidate the BJP’s support among North Indian migrant voters, while the MNS is doubling down on its core Marathi base.

Social media erupted in response. Influencer Ajeet Bharti quipped on X, “फिर भी, ‘पटक पटक के मारने’ का आनंद ‘डुबो-डुबो के मारने’ से कहीं अधिक ही है,” mocking the performative nature of such political machismo.

As Maharashtra braces for high-stakes polls, the Dubey-Thackeray war of words highlights how identity politics continues to dominate public discourse, often at the cost of civility.
