ED says, Praveen Raut was frontman of Sanjay Raut in Patra Chawl Scam

SANJAY RAUT ED ARREST 1

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday told a special PMLA court in Mumbai that former director of Guru Ashish Construction Pvt Ltd Pravin Raut was the frontman of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut in the Patra Chawl scam.

Sanjay Raut is currently in the custody of the ED in a money laundering case related to irregularities in a chawl re-development project in Mumbai’s Goregaon area.

The ED on Monday produced Shiv Sena MP before a special sessions court after his arrest here early this morning in connection with Patra chawl money laundering case.

Hearing the matter, the Court sent Raut to ED custody till August 4. The central agency had sought 8-day custody of the Shiv Sena MP. ED’s counsel Hiten Venegaonkar argued that Pravin Raut, former director of Guru Ashish Construction Pvt Ltd did not invest a single penny. He received Rs 112 crore.

ED said the investigation revealed that Rs 1.6 crore was transferred to the account of Sanjay Raut and wife Varsha Raut. The probe agency argued that Raut and family were beneficiaries of Rs 1.6 crore.

ED further told the court that the investigation revealed that out of Rs 1.6 crore, a plot of land at Kihim Beach in Alibaug was bought. One plot was taken in the name of Swapna Patkar. The probe also revealed that Pravin Raut has been the frontman of Sanjay Raut. The agency said witness Swapna Patkar and sellers have confirmed about cash transactions in the land deal.

“The investigation also revealed that Pravin Raut is a close confidante and associate of Sanjay Raut. Being the frontman of Sanjay Raut, he utilised his proximity with Sanjay Raut for obtaining approval from MAHADA and other advantages best known to themselves. Being a very influential person and given his proximity to Sanjay Raut, Praveen Raut has received PoC of around 112 crores and there is every likelihood that Sanjay Raut has received more PoC during that period,” ED told the court.

ED’s lawyer said Sanjay Raut was summoned four times but he appeared before the agency only once. During this period, Raut tried to tamper with the evidence and key witnesses, said ED’s lawyer seeking 8-day custody of the Shiv Sena leader.

On the other hand, Sanjay Raut’s lawyer, Advocate Ashok Mundargi argued that Raut’s arrest is politically motivated. Advocate Mundargi said Raut is a patient with a heart-related ailment. He had also undergone surgery. Papers related to this have been presented before the court.

After the Court’s ruling, Sanjay Raut’s brother Sunil Raut told reporters, “Sanjay Raut was arrested late night yesterday. His medical checkup was done today and he was taken to court. We have faith in the judiciary, we believe he will be released soon.” Sunil Raut had earlier said that the Shiv Sena leader has been framed since the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre is afraid of him.

“BJP is afraid of him and got him arrested. They have not given us any documents (regarding his arrest). He has been framed,” said Sanjay Raut’s brother.

Earlier on Monday, Raut was taken for a medical test at the JJ hospital before being produced at the court. ED officials raided the Shiv Sena leader’s home on Sunday, and after detaining and questioning him for several hours, arrested him in the early hours today. Raut is a close aide of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Meanwhile, another FIR was registered against Sanjay Raut in Mumbai for allegedly threatening Swapna Patkar, the wife of Sujit Patkar, believed to be a close aide of the Shiv Sena MP. The case was registered at the Vakola police station under sections 504, 506 and 509 of IPC.

An audio clip had gone viral in which Raut was allegedly heard threatening Swapna Patkar. Notably, Swapna Patkar is a witness in the Patra Chawl land case in connection to which the ED detained Raut on Sunday.

According to sources, ED officials seized Rs 11.50 lakh unaccounted cash from the residence of Raut earlier on Sunday. ED sleuths reached Raut’s residence around 7 am on Sunday and conducted the raid.

Soon after the ED officials detained him in connection with the Patra Chawl land scam case, the Shiv Sena leader said that “Jhukega nahi” (will not be cowed down)”.

Speaking to media persons on Sunday, Raut said, “False charges and documents are being framed against people. All of this is being done to weaken Shiv Sena and Maharashtra. Sanjay Raut will not be cowed down. I will not leave the party.”

On June 28 this year, Raut was summoned by ED in connection with the prevention of the money laundering case pertaining to the Rs 1,034 crore Patra Chawl land scam. Refusing to join the probe and citing the Monsoon Session of Parliament as a reason for not joining the probe, he then dared the probe agency to arrest him.

Later, he reached the ED office. In April this year, the ED had provisionally attached assets worth over Rs 11.15 crore belonging to Raut’s wife Varsha Raut and two of his associates as part of its investigation.

State Health Minister Veena George on Monday confirmed that the test reports of a 22-year-old person with monkeypox symptoms who died on July 30 were found to be positive for the viral zoonotic infection.

The youth hailed from Chavakkad Kuranjiyur in Thrissur district tested positive in UAE and died in Kerala on July 30. “On the evening of July 26 he developed abnormal jerking and he had fever too.

On July 27 he was admitted and on July 28 he was moved to the ventilator. On July 30 the hospital authorities informed the Health Department that he got tested on July 19 for monkeypox in UAE and the result of which was positive. Our team went there, unfortunately, that person died in the evening.

As per our procedure, we had sent the samples to National Institute of Virology (NIV) Alappuzha and test results show that he was positive for monkeypox,” said George.

He was also treated for Encephalitis and altered seizures and other diseases and he was given antibiotics. Currently, 20 high-risk contacts are under observation which includes three health workers, a doctor and two nursing staff from the private hospital.

The Health Minister said that it is unsure whether the family has withheld the information that the person was tested in UAE.

“We constituted a state-level team including state medical board members to enquire what really has happened. And the genomic sequencing of sample is being done at NIV,” she added.

She further pointed out that on his day of arrival at Calicut Airport he was not showing any symptoms of fever or rashes during the thermal scanning but he had a fever four weeks ago and on July 26 he developed it again.

“A Preliminary report says that it is a West African variant,” she said. The Minister said that the state Health Department has ensured that every person will undergo thermal scanning at the airport so if the person has a high fever he or she can go to the help desk.

“Thermal scanning at airports is regular and if the person has a high fever, we have a help desk there and health workers will take care. We have isolation facilities in all the 48 districts and transportation facilities will also be arranged,” said George.

She also requested people to take precautions and not hide the information. “Currently there are two active cases in the state and all the other persons under observation were tested negative,” she added.

Notably, India has reported five cases of monkeypox so far, of which three cases are from Kerala, one from Delhi and one from Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur. Following this, the central government is on an alert even as the count of infections in some other countries has risen.

NITI Aayog’s member (Health) Dr V K Paul said that there is absolutely no need for any panic as the government has taken significant measures to keep the disease in check.

In an Interview with ANI, Dr Paul sought to assert that there was no need for any undue panic but added that it was still important that the country and the society stay vigilant.

“There is no need to panic, as of now, but one must report in time if they spot any symptoms, he said. According to World Health Organization (WHO), more than 18,000 cases have been reported from 78 countries.

“The monkeypox outbreak can be stopped if countries, communities and individuals inform themselves, take the risks seriously, and take the steps needed to stop transmission and protect vulnerable groups,” said Dr Tedros, Director General, WHO on Thursday.

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the same family of viruses that causes smallpox. The disease is endemic in regions like West and Central Africa but lately, cases have been reported from non-endemic countries too, according to the WHO.

Uddhav Thackeray slams Nadda’s comments over family-run parties and BJP over arrest of Raut

Latching on to Bharatiya Janata Party president J P Nadda’s comments that family-run parties will perish, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday accused the ruling party at the Centre of conspiring to finish off regional outfits.

Talking to reporters here, Thackeray also slammed the BJP over the arrest of Sena leader Sanjay Raut by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case and hailed the Rajya Sabha MP as a “true Shiv Sainik” who did not succumb to pressure.

“The BJP is conspiring to finish off regional parties. The mask is off. I had thanked (Governor Bhagat Singh) Koshiyari that you inadvertently brought the dream of crushing Marathi manoos out before us.

Similarly, the BJP president has also revealed they do not want other parties to exist in the country and want dictatorship,” the former Maharashtra chief minister said.

Koshiyari had kicked off a storm last week with his remarks that Mumbai would no longer remain the country’s financial capital if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis were asked to leave the metropolis.

The governor, however, had later claimed his remarks were misconstrued. Last week, Nadda had said in the times to come only an ideology-driven party like the BJP will survive, while others ruled by families will perish.

“This (Nadda’s statement) is very dangerous and serious. His comments indicate taking the country towards dictatorship and autocracy. The politics today is distressing,” Thackeray said.

The way the BJP is expanding itself, it is only using force and not the brains, Thackeray added. “If only you have strength and want to finish off others then time does not remain the same all the time. It changes. When time changes, the BJP and Nadda ji must think what will happen to them,” he warned.

Targeting the BJP over the arrest of Raut, Thackeray asked where democracy was if agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation, the ED and the Income Tax department are used against political opponents.

Hailing Raut, Thackeray said the Rajya Sabha MP was a hardcore Sainik of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray and did not succumb to any pressure.

Asserting that those who speak against the government are getting indicted, he said, “I am proud of Sanjay Raut. What crime has he committed? He is a journalist, a Shiv Sainik is fearless and speaks what he does not approve of.”

Attacking the BJP for vendetta politics, Thackeray said Raut could have switched sides but had asserted he would “die but not surrender”. “Those who switched sides have gone for a bath in the ‘Hamam’ (bathing place) and till the time the foam of power is over their body, they can criticize us. But they will realize the situation (in the future),” Thackeray added.

NCP leader  Jitendra Awhad  and hundreds of party workers were detained by Thane police when they set out for  protest over Raj Bhwan over Governer’s remarks on Mumbai

Awhad and NCP workers were taken to Kopri police station before they could leave the city to reach the Raj Bhavan in neighbouring Mumbai.

Koshyari has drawn fire for his comments that “Mumbai will have no cash” assuming Gujaratis and Rajasthanis were to leave the city.

Talking to reporters, former minister Awhad claimed that the governor has been repeatedly making derogatory remarks.

Talking to reporters, former minister Awhad claimed that the governor has been repeatedly making derogatory remarks.

While inaugurating a chowk in Mumbai last week, the governor said, “I tell people here that if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis are removed from Maharashtra, especially from Mumbai and Thane, you will be left with no money and Mumbai will not be the financial capital.”

Raut and his family have benefited from money to the tune of ₹ 1.06 crore – ED

The agency has claimed that Mr Raut and his family have benefited from money to the tune of ₹ 1.06 crore – up from the 83 lakh it earlier claimed. The ED has also accused him of threatening a key witness in the Alibaug land deal with rape and murder.

The case in which Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut has been arrested is a ₹ 1,000 crore scam in the Patra Chawl redevelopment project, the Enforcement Directorate has said.

The agency has claimed that Mr Raut and his family have benefited from money to the tune of ₹ 1.06 crore — up from the 83 lakh it earlier claimed. The ED has also accused him of threatening a key witness in the Alibaug land deal with rape and murder.

The woman, Swapna Patkar, apparently filed a complaint on July 22. She claimed that the rape and murder threat was typed on a sheet of paper, which was inserted in a newspaper delivered to her on July 15, reported news agency Press Trust of India.

Mr Raut was arrested late last night by the ED on charges of money laundering and was placed in the agency’s custody for four days by a court in Mumbai. The Sena MP has claimed that he is being framed as part of a political vendetta.

“This is nothing more than a political vendetta. Since Sunday morning, freedom was taken away,” Mr Raut told reporters. Pointing out that he is a heart patient, Mr Raut said he is not even allowed to go out.

In court today, the agency claimed that Mr Raut was summoned thrice for questioning but he appeared before it only once.

During this time, he tried tampering with key witnesses, the agency claimed. In its charges against Mr Raut, the agency said the money collected for the redevelopment project from 2010-2014 “was siphoned off by Rakesh Wadhwan and Sarang Wadhwan and thereby the project remained incomplete”.

“Out of the siphoned amount, Pravin Raut received around ₹ 112 crores in his account and proceeds of the crime amounting to about 1.06 crore were directly received by Sanjay Raut,” the ED told the court. A property was purchased in Alibaug using the tainted money.

Pravin Raut, a former director of Guru Ashish Construction Pvt Ltd, was the “front man” of Sanjay Raut, the agency claimed. During 2010-2011, “Rs 2 lakh was transferred every month from accused Praveen Raut to Sanjay Raut,” the agency claimed. Praveen Raut has even funded Sanjay Raut’s trip abroad, the ED told the court.

In April, the ED attached assets worth over ₹ 11.15 crore belonging to Mr Raut’s wife Varsha Raut and two of his associates.

The attached properties are land held by Pravin Raut at Palghar, Saphale (a town in Palghar) and Padgha (in the Thane district).

The assets also include a flat in Mumbai’s suburb Dadar held by Varsha Raut and eight plots at Kihim beach in Alibaug jointly held by Varsha Raut and Swapna Patkar, wife of Sujit Patkar, a “close associate” of Sanjay Raut, the ED has said.

Sena chief and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray have solidly backed Mr Raut, calling him a “hardcore Shiv Sainik of Sena founder Bal Thackeray”.

“I am proud of Sanjay Raut. What crime has he committed? He is a journalist, a Shiv Sainik, is fearless and speaks what he does not approve of,” Mr Thackeray said.

Leaders of the Congress have also spoken in Mr Raut’s support. “The only crime SanjayRaut has committed is that he has not been cowered down by the politics of intimidation of the BJP party. He is a man of conviction and courage. We are with Sanjay Raut,” tweeted Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
