ISIS causing unrest in Afghanistan: Taliban

The Taliban’s acting Foreign Minister admitted that 1,800 ISIS terrorists were released last year and claimed that ISIS fighters have been subdued while on the contrary, ISIS has claimed responsibility for the recent deadly attacks on mosques, schools, and cars across Afghanistan.

Muttaqi even contradicted his statement, saying “the ISIS prisoners had been causing unrest in the country during the previous 11 months.”

Addressing the Tashkent international conference, acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban Amir Khan Muttaqi informed that when the Taliban took control of Kabul, the Afghan capital, 1,800 ISIS terrorists were released from Bagram and Pul-eCharkhi prisons, the Khaama Press reported.

During his address, Foreign Minister Muttaqi confirmed the release of the ISIS prisoners and said that the Taliban had grown strong enough to subdue ISIS fighters during the previous 11 months of their administration.

The previous Afghan administration flew the ISIS members to Kabul after they were besieged by the Taliban in Jawzjan province in northern Afghanistan, Khaama quoted the acting minister as saying.

Uzbekistan hosted an international conference on Afghanistan on July 25-26 which was attended by the representatives of 20 world countries.

Earlier, US officials expressed concern over the release of the ISIS prisoners and said that their release by the Taliban from the prisons of Pul-e-Charkhi and Bagram had strengthened the group.

In February, the nominee to head the US Central Command, Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla raised concern over the Taliban freeing Al-Qaeda and Islamic State (ISIS) prisoners and warned that the foreign terrorist groups are “reconstituting” in Afghanistan.

All prisoners in detention centres and prisons in Afghanistan were pardoned after the Taliban took control of the country last August. Despite the Taliban’s claims that ISIS does not physically exist in Afghanistan and does not pose a threat, the group had claimed responsibility for deadly attacks on mosques, schools, and cars, the publication said.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan last August, the country has been mired in violence. The string of terrorist attacks took place in Afghanistan on April 21, 2022, including the attack against the Seh Dokan Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif and a separate attack in Kunduz, both claimed by Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP), an entity affiliated with Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh).

The attacks have resulted in dozens killed and many more injured and follow other recent attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, including in religious minority communities, across Afghanistan. Moreover, the law and order situation has deteriorated and Afghan citizens are living in perpetual fear of blasts and explosions.

‘Reform in drones, space and geospatial sectors are opening up new avenues’: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday that reforms in drones, space and geospatial sectors are opening up new avenues.

“Removal of angel tax, removal of retrospective tax, and reduction of corporate tax – are encouraging investments and industry. The reforms in drones, space and geospatial sectors are opening up new avenues”, he said.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister congratulated the students on getting their degrees. “Congratulations to all those who are graduating today in Anna University’s 42nd convocation. You would have already built a future for yourselves in your minds. Therefore, today is not only a day of achievements but also of aspirations”, he said.

Calling them the leaders of tomorrow, the Prime Minister also noted the sacrifices of the parents and support of teachers and non-teaching staff of the University.

The Prime Minister recalled the words of Swami Vivekananda in what was known as Madras 125 years ago about the possibilities for the youth of India.

The Prime Minister remarked that “the whole world is looking at India’s youth with hope. Because you are the growth engines of the country and India is the world’s growth engine.”

The Prime Minister also recalled former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s association with Anna University. “May his thoughts and values always inspire you”, said the Prime Minister.

PM Modi noted that the COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented event. “It was a once-in-a-century crisis that nobody had any user manual for. It tested every country,” he said.

He remarked that adversities reveal what we are made of. “India faced the unknown confidently, thanks to its scientists, healthcare professionals and common people,” said PM Modi.

As a result, he said, every sector in India is bustling with a new life while adding that industry, investment, innovation and international trade, all are seeing India at the forefront.

The Prime Minister said India was the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer last year. “Innovation is becoming a way of life. In just the last 6 years, the number of recognised start-ups increased by 15,000 per cent,” he said.

The Prime Minister informed that India received a record FDI of over 83 billion dollars last year and said that India’s start-ups too received record funding post-pandemic.

He added that above all this, India’s position in the international trade dynamics is at its best ever. In this era of tech-led disruptions, the Prime Minister said there are three important factors in India’s favour. He said that the first factor is there is a taste for technology. There is a growing sense of comfort with the use of technology. Even the poorest of the poor are adapting to it, he added.

“The second factor is there is trust in risk-takers. Earlier at social occasions, it was difficult for a youngster to say he or she was an entrepreneur. People used to tell them to ‘get settled’, meaning, get a salaried job. Now the situation is the opposite. The third factor is: there is temperament for reform,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that earlier, “there was a notion that a strong government means it should control everything and everyone. But we have changed this. A strong government does not control everything or everyone. It controls the system’s impulse to interfere. A strong government is not restrictive but is responsive. A strong government does not move into every domain. It limits itself and makes space for people’s talents”.

He gave examples of freedom and flexibility provided to youth by the National Education Policy and the scrapping of 25,000 compliances for ease of business.

The Prime Minister underlined the link between the progress of youth and the nation. He said in conclusion “Your growth is India’s growth. Your learnings are India’s learnings. Your victory is India’s victory.”

During the programme, the Prime Minister awarded gold medals and certificates to 69 gold medalists. Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, Chief Minister MK Stalin, and Union Minister L Murugan were among those present on the occasion.

Anna University was established on 4 September 1978. It is named after CN Annadurai, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. It has 13 Constituent Colleges, 494 Affiliated Colleges spread over Tamil Nadu and 3 Regional Campuses – Tirunelveli, Madurai and Coimbatore.

The World Bank does not plan to offer new financing to Sri Lanka, which is battling its worst economic crisis in decades, until the Indian Ocean nation has an adequate macroeconomic policy framework in place, the lender said on Thursday.

In a statement, the World Bank said Sri Lanka needed to adopt structural reforms that focus on economic stabilization and tackle the root causes of its crisis, which has starved it of foreign exchange and led to shortages of food, fuel and medicines.

“The World Bank Group is deeply concerned about the dire economic situation and its impact on the people of Sri Lanka,” it said.

The bank is repurposing resources under existing loans to help alleviate shortages of essential items such as medicine, cooking gas, fertilizer, meals for children, and cash for vulnerable households, it added.

The bank said it was working closely to establish control and fiduciary oversight to ensure fair distribution.

Exclusive: Eknath Shinde is hell bent on taking over the Shiv Sena 8

Last month on this day, Uddhav Thackeray resigned as chief minister of Maharashtra after 40 of Shiv Sena’s 54 MLAs rebelled against him under the leadership of party’s Thane strongman Eknath Shinde. Eknath Shinde’s bid to take over the Shiv Sena. Shinde’s rebellions are unstoppable and they are hell bent on bringing down the Thackeray legacy.

Eknath Shinde sought to take control of the Shiv Sena party and corner Thackeray and his loyalists. This all has become even more desperate to escape the hitches that would have arisen because of the anti-defection law and second, to make it difficult for Thackeray to revive the party which is directly related to the survival of his faction. Under the provisions of the anti-defection law, any nonaligned faction has to merge with any of the existing parties in the assembly after defecting from the parent party. It means the Shinde faction would have had to merge with BJP or any other party to prevent disqualification under the law. If Shinde has to join BJP, then he would not be able to take independent decisions.

These days, Eknath Shinde greeting the old guards of Shiv Sena to claim his ownership over the party. A few days back he had met MP Gajanan Kirtikar and yesterday he met veteran Shiv Sena leaders Manohar Joshi and Liladhar Dake. The purpose of these meetings of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is to make a dent in the national executive of Shiv Sena. So that Uddhav Thackeray will come in minority. Thackeray will be left with Aditya Thackeray, Subhash Desai, Diwakar Raote, Sanjay Raut and Chandrakant Khaire.
The roles of Anant Geete and Anandrao Adsul are overwhelming. The Shinde faction and the BJP will soon have an electoral alliance. The Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the Bharatiya Janata Party will form an alliance and contest the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections. This alliance will also contest the elections of Mumbai Municipal Corporation, which is dominated by Shiv Sena for the last 25 years. The expansion of the cabinet of Eknath Shinde and the BJP government will be done before August 3.

That’s why those aspiring to become ministers have intensified the fielding. Several dozen people are willing to become ministers. Some people have faith in the attendance of Delhi Durbar, while some are making rounds of Mumbai Durbar. Ramdas Kadam is likely to go on Legislative Council. Ramdas Kadam’s claim on the Legislative Council seat vacated by the resignation of former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. At present one more seat in the Legislative Council has fallen vacant with 12 MLAs appointed by the Governor.

IAF retiring one Squadron of MIG-21 Bison after recent aircraft crash in Rajasthan

Amid recent crashes involving its vintage Russian combat aircraft fleet, the Indian Air Force is now going to retire one more squadron of the MiG-21 Bison aircraft by September 30.

On Thursday evening, a MiG-21 Type 69 Trainer aircraft crashed in Barmer, Rajasthan killing both the pilots including a youngster Flight Lieutenant A Bal and Wing Commander Rana.

“The 51 Squadron based out of Srinagar air base is being number plated on September 30. After this, only three squadrons of the planes would be left in service and would be phased out by the year 2025,” sources in the IAF told to agencies.

Now every year, one squadron each of these planes would be number plated, they said. The 51 squadron is famous for thwarting Pakistan’s aerial attack on India on February 27, 2019, and taking out an F-16 in an aircraft flown by Wing Commander (now Group Captain) Abhinandan Varthaman.

This is the only instance when a MiG-21 aircraft brought down an F-16 in air-to-air combat, the sources said. The IAF has been replacing the MiG-21 fighter jets with more capable aircraft like the Su-30 and the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).

In the last 20 months, 6 MiG-21s have been lost in crashes in which five pilots have lost their lives. The MiG-21s were supposed to be retired a long time ago but delays in induction of the LCA Tejas aircraft have forced the IAF to continue flying these planes.

The IAF carries out extensive checks on these planes before flying and all safety aspects are taken care of before the pilot takes off, the officials said. The number-plated squadron would be reactivated soon with a more capable aircraft in the near future, the officials said.

SA won by 58 runs against England: Rossouw, Shamsi shines

RILEY ROSOUW

An all-round show from South Africa led from the front by Rilee Rossouw and spinner Tabraiz Shamsi helped the visitors seal a 58-run win over England in the second T20I of the three-match series at Cardiff on Thursday. The three-match series is now level at 1-1.

In the first innings, South Africa put up 207/3 on the board, with Rilee Rossouw smashing an unbeaten 96 off 55 balls with ten fours and five sixes. Reeza Hendricks also played a great knock of 53 off just 32 balls. England could not inflict much damage with the bat as spinner Moeen Ali and pacers Richard Gleeson and Chris Jordan could only manage a wicket each.

In chase of 208 runs, England lost wickets regularly and it never looked as if they posed a threat. Half the team was back in the hut before it could cross the 100-run mark. Contributions did come from skipper Jos Buttler (29), Moeen Ali (28) and Jonny Bairstow (30) but it was not enough to stop Proteas from securing a 58-run win as the hosts were bowled out for 149.

Shamsi (3/27) was the best bowler for South Africa. Put to bat first by England, South Africa did not have a very good start as they lost Quinton de Kock for just 15 when the team was at 39. From that point. Hendricks and Rossouw stitched an attacking stand of 73 runs, with the former bringing up his ninth fifty. Gleeson sent him back for 53 off 32 balls after Bairstow took a solid catch at fine leg. Afterwards, Rossouw and Heinrich Klaasen kept the scoreboard ticking for a while before Klassen was dismissed for 19 off 10 balls by Jordan.

Finally, a 64-run stand between Rossouw and Tristan Stubbs (15*) took the visitors to 207/3. Ali, Gleeson, Jordan managed a wicket each for England. In chase of 208, skipper Buttler gave England a solid start, hitting three sixes and a four before being dismissed for 29 off 14 balls by Phehlukwayo when the team was at 37. From this point, England’s innings met an early collapse and the next four wickets fell for 55 runs.

Dawid Malan (5), Jason Roy (20), Moeen Ali (28) and Sam Curran (2) fell without making a heavy impact. Spinners Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj did not allow any big partnership to develop.

Bairstow and Liam Livingstone tried to stabilise the innings with some solid strike rotation and boundaries, but their resistance could last for only 36 runs before the former was dismissed by pacer Rabada for 30 runs. Livingstone followed him back to pavilion shortly for 18 after being dismissed by Phehlukwayo. England was seven for 141 runs. The rest of the lineup could not put up a fight against the Proteas and the hosts were bundled out for 149, losing the game by 58 runs.

Shamsi (3/27) and Phehlukwayo (3/39) were the leading bowlers for South Africa. Rossouw’s knock of 96* earned him the ‘Man of the Match’ title.

Brief Scores: South Africa: 207/3 (Rilee Rossouw 96*, Reeza Hendricks 53, Moeen Ali 1/17) defeated England: 149 in 16.4 overs (Jonny Bairstow 30, Moeen Ali 28, Tabraiz Shamsi 3/27) by 58 runs.
