Vidya Sinha was a great actress

The death of television and former Hindi film actress Vidya Sinha who charmed her audiences in the 70s and the 80s with her superb performances like Rajnigandha, Chhoti Si Baat and Inkaar, is a great loss to the Hindi  film industry. Vidya Sinha was an accomplished actress known for her impeccable positive roles in Hindi cinema. She was the most talented actress in the industry, was beautiful, dignified and had a charming Rajnigandha smile on her face. She was my favourite actress and I loved the movies in which she acted in. May she find peace and joy in heaven and may God forgive her of her sins which she committed on this earth and may her soul rest in peace in heaven.

Reforms necessary for polls to Delhi University Students Union

Process for elections for Delhi University Union (DUSU) has begun with elections to be held in the month of September. Reforms are necessary to DUSU polls. A simple practical approach to place groups fielding contestants for all the posts of DUSU in the beginning of ballot-papers in alphabetical order of name of the group will make the process simple by doing with unethical tricks to field candidates with identical names or to pre-fix A, AA etc to place names first in ballot-papers for confusing voters. DUSU polls should be conducted through EVMs equipped with VVPAT system.

DUSU polls in future should be made more realistic and with widest representation by making it compulsory for all colleges affiliated to Delhi University to get their students automatically enrolled as members of DUSU.

It was indeed shameful on part of poll-aspirants when once the then Justice GS Sistani of Delhi High court had to pull up student-leaders approaching Delhi High Court against rejection of their nomination-forms when learned judge advised them to go to nursery schools rather than approaching temple of justice, because these educated youth signed at places where those proposing and seconding their names had to sign.

Take action against those who joined BJP to save their corrupt deeds

Central government deserves all appreciation for a free run to government-agencies for swift action against corrupt deeds of former political rulers. It is hoped that government-agencies will soon expose their corrupt deeds so that even their patrons in opposition may move away from them.

But it is noteworthy that many from opposition including also those who used to be bitterly criticised by ruling BJP for corrupt and unethical practices, joined ruling BJP most probably out of fear of being probed by investigating agencies. BJP-ruled central government should also book these opportunist politicians. Such a step will give double-edged advantage to ruling BJP because of avoiding criticism of targeting only opposition leaders and secondly clean BJP from such undesired elements.

Such a step will never be disadvantageous for ruling BJP because such opportunist elements will never be liked by masses or their earlier political parties. Loyal BJP cadre will feel happy to be ensured that such opportunist elements having joined BJP will not dilute their chances for seeking BJP ticket to contest elections.

Ban on plastic is welcome

The recent move by the Railways and Parliament Complex to ban plastic is welcomed. The move aimed at promoting plastic free office environment at government departments now comes as an of late move. Further it is very overwhelming that Railways will enforce single use plastic ban rule effectively by October 2 this year.

The Government agencies should now focus on relying on bio degradable materials and paper based products to be used in lieu of single use plastics. Efforts should be made to create necessary awareness to depend less on plastic based products to the end customers. The Government should now issue a mandate to all its agencies, apart from Railways and Parliament House, to give up use of plastics within its premises. Sectors which witness robust consumer interaction like food and beverages, tourism, healthcare, hospitality, travel, consumer durables etc. should immediately enforce ban on single use of plastic. Awareness related to avoid single use plastic is highly necessary amongst citizens through enforcement of bans and Government should set a high precedent implement the same to protect the environment.

Ganesh Chaturthi: Lokmanya Tilak made it a social celebration

Ganesh Chaturthi,Lord Ganesh, Ganpati CelebrationWhat is it about Ganesh Chaturthi that makes us wait for it for an entire year. We go to Ganesh temples all year. We have so many Ganesh specific sacred days that we celebrate throughout the year. Then, why this peak of excitement during Ganesh Chaturthi festival? For some it’s a sacred relevance of the festival, for some it’s a way of saying thanks to the Lord for their respective wish fulfilment and for some it’s a sheer joy of bringing home a Lord amongst them as family and honouring him with worship and his favourite feast. Whatever reasons are, the pure joy of having a Lord amongst us even for a short span is in itself a highly elevating experience. It is the festival of bringing the Ganesh idol made out of earth in any desired fashion or layout. Puja known as Pranprathishta is then performed with mantras to infuse a life in the idol. Celebration of worship then begins either for one day or three, five, seven or ten days. In between, Lord Ganesh’s mother Gauri arrives and is sent off along with Lord Ganesh in a ‘Visarjan’ (immersion) from fifth to seventh day.

All of this worship and celebration by having the Lord between us is surreal experience. It’s very close and personal. But this festival is also celebrated on a social level. Revered social leader Lokmanya Tilak made it a social celebration during the freedom struggle to bring together people from all stages and strata of life. He united them by having them celebrate this festival as a collective force against the oppressors. It was continued after independence with an ever increasing fervour. Yes, those celebrations have now become commercial in a huge way. But one look at Lord Ganesh, be it anywhere in a pandal or at any home we forget everything else. We go deeper into the reverence for Lord Ganesh and let our joyous fervour celebrate his stay with us making it memorable each and every year.

This is why we wait every year for our lord Ganesh to arrive at our homes or in pandals. It is a pure joy celebration that crosses all barriers and cuts through all segments of society.  So, many people from other community and religions join this celebration, thus, signifying the unity of our people. Thus, goes the Ganesh festival celebrations. Happy Ganesh Festival to all.

Reservation debate opposition’s vendetta – Paswan

Ram Vilas Paswan, Ramdas Athawale, Reservation debate, Ramdas debate on reservation, reservation, quotaCommenting on RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statement on the reservation by the Constitution and no one can take it away from the backward sections, Union minister Ramdas Athawale asserted that there is no need for a debate on reservation in the country and said the Narendra Modi government should not be seen as anti- Dalit.
While speaking to Afternoon Voice Ramdas Athawale said, “I am happy to see whatever Mohan Bhagwatji had said the RSS has promptly clarified it. I want to assure the Dalits of our country that there is no question of debate or rethinking on the issue of reservation. It is a constitutional right and no one can snatch it away from them. Modiji also assured several times that the government stands with Dalits and backward community of the country,”Athawale further stated that he is in favour of a strong law in the country so that those involved in lynching of Dalits and minorities can be punished. A section of the people may be angry with the Dalits thinking that they are getting more benefits from the government and that could be a reason for the attacks on them but these attacks on Dalits are not taking place because of the present dispensation at the Centre.

Whereas Bhagwat had said that conversations should happen in a harmonious atmosphere between those in favour of reservation and those against it. The RSS dismissed it as “needless” row over Bhagwat’s remarks, asserting that he merely stressed on the need for mutual talks in harmony within society to address any issue.

RSS’ ‘Prachar Pramukh’ (publicity head) Arun Kumar immediately tweeted that his organisation has made it clear time and again that it fully supports reservation for Dalits, scheduled tribes, other backward classes and those getting it on economic grounds.

Dalit group Bhim Army leader Chandrashekhar Azad challenged RSS chief to open a debate on the issue of reservation even as he sought a discussion on the abolition of caste system which, he said, has “hollowed out” the country.

Ramvilas Paswan said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeated it many times that it cannot be meddled with. “There is no need for any debate on reservation. This is now available even to the upper castes poor so it is impossible that it will be ended.” Paswan added further that the opposition parties are trying to fuel a controversy. But I believe their lies are not going to cut ice with the people.”

Reservation to Dalit can never be scrapped in India

Recently, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat triggered a debate on reservation, and all Dalit leaders pounced at him by passing various statements in favour of their vote bank. Mohan Bhagwat called for a “Discussion on Issue” but that can never happen as BJP too has fear of loss. Meanwhile, if we look at the larger picture, reservations are actually not meant to fix caste inequality – which is an effort which all those wanting them abolished haven’t even managed to start, for all their talk. Reservations are meant to prevent caste supremacists from outrightly denying the less privileged their right to learn altogether. That it works is seen from the fury of the chauvinists over the “injustice” to them that they can not occupy all the opportunities and must share. Reservations can not end caste prejudice, but they can and do prevent denial of rights till someone bothers to do it. They have been doing exactly that. Which is why the assumed upper castes are upset. If we look at the Indian Constitution, it gave provision of reservation on the basis of class. Which is later interpreted as caste. It was considered to be necessary at the time of independence as the lower castes were discriminated in India since ages. It was believed that reservation should help bridge this gap in a short period.

The reservation on the basis of castes was proposed only for ten years for the Parliamentary/Assembly seats. However, as the time passed, reservation became a political issue and the time limit was increased again and again. Article 16 of Constitution guarantees equality of opportunity in matters of public employment. It states, there shall be equality of opportunity for all citizens in matters relating to employment or appointment to any office under the state.

No citizen shall, on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, descent, place of birth, residence or any of them, be ineligible for, or discriminated against in respect or, any employment or office under the state. Nothing in this Article shall prevent the state from making any provision for the reservation of appointments or posts in favour of any backward class of citizens, which, in the opinion of the state, is not adequately represented in the services under the state. However, our politicians equated castes with class and gave reservation on the basis of caste.
The benefit of reservation was initially granted to SC/STs whose population was around 22.5 per cent. Hence, there was more than 77 per cent of population who were falling in the general (unreserved) category.

During that time, it was possible to abolish reservations since majority of population was against reservation. The scenario changed after V P Singh implemented Mandal Commission report in 1989 and gave reservation to Other Backward Classes (OBC) to the extent of 27 per cent. The OBC’s were estimated to constitute 52 per cent but they are around 41 per cent of the population according to latest estimates. Now the reservation is available to 70-75 per cent of population. This was the tipping point because now the majority population is getting the benefit of reservation. The general category people have now lost all hopes to reverse the reservation programme. Hence, instead of trying to abolish reservation, they are themselves demanding reservations by asking to include their caste in the OBC’s. Some castes which are in OBC wants them to be included in the SC or ST categories to get even more benefits.

Thanks to the judicial intervention that the reservation is capped at 50 per cent. Leaving to the politicians, we would have perhaps 90 per cent plus reservation which would have including almost all castes, women, Muslims, physically handicapped, etc.

In my opinion, all reservations must be abolished and all people should be treated equally. This should be our long-term goal and reservation must be reduced in the phased manner. However, that is not going to happen in a democracy where the majority decision prevails over the right decision. Moreover, if you ban discrimination, you don’t need caste reservations.

Discrimination is already illegal in India. In fact, so is murder. Yet, court after court is acquitting self-confessed brutal mass murderers of Dalits. There is no outrage, no pressure on the government to bring them to justice, no questioning of those exposed for providing material support to the murderers as they continue to hold positions of power. Replacing caste based reservations with those that are economic capacity based will have an extremely predictable result of filling seats with high caste poor people and disenfranchising the lower castes while pretending that this is a more just system. We are trying to get equality in terms of status but equality in terms of opportunity is being suppressed for some sections of society, to be precise that’s not sections which get affected that is the individual who is affected by Reservation; one can improve, if one has or else one is deprived.

The caste based reservation system is a inconclusive debate with no clear cut lines. There is almost little evidence that it has made a difference to the poor over the seventy years of practicing it, but the system cannot be scrapped or changed easily as the social disadvantages remain a contentious issue. There are no authoritative answers to this one, we can’t easily expect because any one who raises this issue will have to come out of power because there is no perfect solution for this till now.

Amul comes to the rescue; increases milk supply in Mumbai & Pune after floods

Amul Milk, Amul, Maharashtra floods, flood, kolhapur floods, mumbai floods, monsoon, In an attempt to overcome the milk shortage, Amul has ramped up its milk supply to Mumbai and other cities in Maharashtra to bridge the deficit due to the death of nearly 1,000 milch animals and an acute shortage of fodder due to the recent floods in the western parts of the state.

The floods, which lasted for nearly a week, cause severe damage to properties, standing crops and animal husbandry in the state.

Leading milk suppliers in Maharashtra, including Gokul and Warna, have faced a huge decline in daily procurement of milk from farmers in western Maharashtra. Disruption in transportation services also resulted in supply cuts to the cities like Mumbai and Pune, which have estimated daily consumption of 6 million litres and 2.5 million litres, respectively. The two cities depend on milk arrivals from many states, including Gujarat and Karnataka.

“We are currently supplying 1.9-2.0 million litres daily for consumption in Mumbai and Pune. We have increased our supply by 0.5 million litres to meet the supply deficit in both these cities. There is no supply shortage of milk in these cities as of now. If the need arises, we are ready to supply more,” said R S Sodhi, managing director, GCMMF.

When asked about procurement of milk to supply additional quantity to Maharashtra, Sodhi said: “We are procuring from Gujarat and also parts of Maharashtra to meet the additional demand. We have not raised the selling price of our milk.”

In another jolt to Congress, one more MLA Nirmala Gavit joins Sena

Nirmala Gavit Joins Sena, Nirmala gavit, Congress, Shiv Sena, BJP, Joins Shiv Sena,After a brief hiatus due to floods, the political pitch in poll-bound Maharashtra has started heating up once again with Congress MLA Nirmala Gavit on Wednesday formally joining the ruling Shiv Sena, a day after resigning as a member of the Legislative Assembly.

Welcoming her into the party fold, Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has said induction of the Igatpuri MLA will strengthen his party in Nashik district in north Maharashtra. Gavit, daughter of Congress veteran Manikrao Gavit, had said she was quitting as an MLA to ensure development of the constituency.

Ahead of elections, due in September-October, the Congress and the NCP are in disarray in view of a string of desertions, and if sources to be believed Gavit’s crossover is certainly not going to be the last one.

According to sources in the BJP, Congress MLA from Indapur in Pune district and former marketing minister, Harshvardhan Patil, is likely to join the BJP.

Patil could be a prized catch for the BJP given that NCP MP Supriya Sule had secured a decisive lead of 70,000 votes from Indapur over her rival from Baramati in the recently-held Lok Sabha elections.

“Though Patil has been traditionally challenged by the Sena in Indapur, he is likely to join the BJP ahead of polls,” they said.

Patil shifting his loyalties to the BJP might affect Sule’s chances of winning another term in 2024, they said.

Notably, the then in-charge of Baramati Lok Sabha constituency and incumbent state BJP president Chandrakant Patil had said the BJP would wrest Baramati from the Pawars in 2024.

Earlier, bigwigs from the NCP including its Mumbai unit preident Sachin Ahir, and Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil of the Congress had quit their parent parties to join the Shiv Sena and the BJP, respectively.

Another fence-sitter from the Sharad Pawar-led party who might cross over to the BJP is Maratha royal and Satara MP Udayanraje Bhosale.

Speculation on Bhosale’s future move started doing rounds after he called on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday night.

Bhosale’s clarification that his visit was meant to resolve the issues of flood-related people from Satara has failed to convince political circles.

Commenting on the meeting, senior NCP leader and former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar told reporters that Udayanraje met the chief minister to draw his attention to the flood-hit people in Satara district.

“It was not a political meeting,” he added.

When asked about Bhosale’s next move, Pawar retorted saying, “You should ask this question to Bhosale”.

Sources close to the development said the BJP was not very keen to take Bhosale, who is known for brash demeanour and devil-may-care attitude, on board in the wake of the massive mandate the party had secured in the Lok Sabha polls.

Bhosale’s cousin and former NCP MLA Shivendraraje has already joined the BJP which is likely to field him from Satara-Jawli assembly segment.

“The cousins, however, do not see eye to eye, especially after Shivendraraje’s wife Vedantikaraje tasted defeat in Satara municipal council elections by the leaders loyal to Udayanraje Bhosale,” they said.

However, a close aide of the MP alleged the development works proposed by him are being deliberately put on back-burner to malign his image among voters.

He claimed the projects like construction of Rs 60 crore grade separator road in Satara and raising the height of Kaas lake are still pending.

Little GPS tags uncover the secret life of desert bats

Researchers with the help of miniaturized satellite-based tags have revealed that during drier periods desert bats must fly further and longer to fulfill their nightly needs.

Researchers used 1g GPS devices to reconstruct the movement of yellow-winged bats, one of two false vampire bats occurring in Africa and one of the few desert bats large enough to carry this innovative technology.

“GPS tags have seen up to now a limited use with insectivorous bats due to weight constraints and low success in data collection — we achieved great results in tracking such a light species,” said Irene Conenna, a PhD candidate at the University of Helsinki and the lead author of the study published in the journal — Movement Ecology.

“Bats are some of the most successful desert mammals. Powered flight allows them to efficiently track scarce resources and their nocturnal lifestyle buffers them from the baking sun. However, they still struggle to find enough resources during the drier periods of the year,” said Ricardo Rocha, one of the co-authors of the paper.

The study was conducted in Sibiloi National Park, Northern Kenya, along the shores of Lake Turkana, the world’s largest desert lake. Researchers placed GPS loggers in 29 bats, 15 in the rainy season and 14 in the dry and, for one week.

Their whereabouts were recorded every 30 to 60 minutes every night. This revealed that during dry periods bats used larger home ranges and had extended activity periods, potentially to compensate for a shortage in food resources.

Fear of predators leave long-lasting changes in wild animals

A new study conducted by researchers of Western University demonstrates that the fear of predator can leave long-lasting traces of fearful behaviour comparing its effect with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The study was published in the journal — ‘Scientific Reports’.

The study was led by lead researchers Liana Zanette from Western University along with Scott MacDougall-Shackleton and Michael Clinchy.

For the first time, the researchers experimentally demonstrated the effects predator exposure has on the neural circuitry in wild animals which can persist beyond the period of the immediate ‘fight or flight’ response and can remain measurable more than a week later.

Maintaining a powerful memory of a life-threatening predator encounter is clearly evolutionarily beneficial if it helps the individual avoid such events in the future and a growing number of biomedical researchers have begun to propose that PTSD is the cost of inheriting an evolutionarily primitive mechanism that prioritizes survival over the quality of life.

The ecologists are recognising the predators and their effects which affect the prey numbers not just by killing them, but by scaring them as well.

The team of researchers conducted the study on wild-caught, black-capped chickadees at Western’s Advanced Facility for Avian Research (AFAR).

For two days, several individual birds were exposed to audio playbacks of the vocalisations of either predators or non-predators and then housed together in flocks outdoors for seven days during which time they were not exposed to any further experimental cues.

After this seven-day test period, enduringly fearful behaviour was quantified by measuring each individual’s reaction to hearing a chickadee alarm calls, and long-lasting effects on the neural circuitry of fear were assessed by measuring the levels of a genetic transcription factor in the brain (amygdala and hippocampus).

MNS activist kills self; party links it to ED notice to chief Raj Thackeray

An activist of the MNS allegedly committed suicide in Maharashtra’s Thane district, with some party leaders on Wednesday claiming he was “depressed and worried” over the Enforcement Directorate’s notice to MNS chief Raj Thackeray.

However, the police said no suicide note was found and a probe was underway to ascertain why he took the extreme step.

A state spokesperson of the MNS said the deceased, Pravin Chowgule (27), was a loyal worker and fond of Thackeray, and his death was a “major loss for the party”.

However, police sub-inspector Mahesh Kawde said Chowgule was an alcoholic and used to be frequently depressed. He allegedly doused himself with kerosene and set himself afire at his residence in Kalwa township around 10 pm on Tuesday, Kawde said.

When some of Chowgule’s neighbours saw smoke emanating from his house, they rushed there and took him to a local hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, he said. “No suicide note was found at the spot,” Kawde said, adding that the police registered a case of accidental death and a probe was underway. He said Chowgule lived alone and used to work as a tourist car operator. “He used to be frequently depressed and was a liquor addict. He had earlier also attempted suicide on two-three occasions,” the official said.

However, MNS Thane unit spokesman Nainesh Patankar said Chowgule took the extreme step as he was “depressed and angry” over the ED’s notice to Raj Thackeray. Prior to committing suicide, Chowgule expressed concern over this in posts on his Facebook page, he said. Another party worker said Chowgule was “worried” and constantly talking about Thackeray getting the ED notice.

“We told him to calm down and take rest, but it did not work. We came to know of his extreme step on Tuesday evening and took him to a local hospital. Doctors told us he had 85 per cent burns and died before reaching to hospital,” he said. Meanwhile, a state spokesperson of the MNS said Chowgule was a loyal party worker and fond of Thackeray.

“The party men knew him for his enthusiasm and he would paint his body in the party colour during every political event organised by the MNS…it is a major loss for the party,” he said. After getting information of his death, several MNS leaders and activists rushed to the hospital around midnight. Thackeray has been summoned by the ED in connection with a money laundering probe. He will appear before the ED on Thursday, the MNS earlier said.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Thackeray said he would “honour” the summons, and appealed to his party workers to maintain “peace and harmony” and not to indulge in violent protests. The ED is probing alleged irregularities related to loans and equity investment worth over Rs 450 crore by Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) in Kohinoor CTNL Infrastructure Company, which is developing Kohinoor Square tower in Mumbai’s Dadar area.
