Veteran actor Rajinikanth on Monday met the leaders of Tamil Nadu’s Hindu Makkal Katchi party at his residence in Chennai. After the meeting, HMK founder and its state president Arjun Sampath, who along with General Secretary Ravikumar was in attendance at the meeting, claimed Rajinikanth will enter politics and free Tamil Nadu from the clutches of Dravidian rule.

“For sure Rajinikanth is coming into politics and he will be launching his own political party,” Hindu Makkal Katchi president Arjun Sampath said on Monday after a 45-minute meeting with the superstar at his residence.

“It is time Rajini sir came into politics and brought Tamil Nadu out of the current mess,” the right-wing Hindu body leader said. “We have also requested him to join politics,” he said.

Sampath said, “Rajinikanth said the system is corrupt. We know only he can fix it and bring about an alternative politics. When we asked Rajinikanth to enter politics, he said he is in preparation for the same. He said that he would feel guilty if he ends up not doing anything. He told me that he wants to realise his pet project of interlinking Himalayan and peninsular rivers into one national grid. And that it was possible only if he enters politics.”

Rajinikanth said the HMK leaders had just paid him a courtesy visit.

The Kollywood actor’s meeting with the HMK comes a day after he offered farmers Rs 1 crore for a river interlinking project. Farmers’ association leader Ayyakannu and others, however, refused to take the money.

“He is a Superman. If he gives the money to the prime minister, PM will take the money and do something. If Rajinikanth gives the money to us, what can we do?” Ayyakannu asked, pointing out the practical difficulty.

The meetings have fuelled speculation that the Kabali superstar would soon join politics. He had told his fans last month to be “ready for war”, adding that the “system is rotten” and needs to be changed.

Adding to the speculation is his upcoming venture, Kaala, whose poster has Rajinikanth seated on a jeep with an eye-catching number plate: MH 01 BR 1956. The year 1956 was the year when architect of Indian Constitution and Dalit icon BR Ambedkar converted to Buddhism.
