Slippers, shoes were hurled at Jawaharlal Nehru Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar in Nagpur where he was addressing a public meeting on the occasion of 125th birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar.
Workers of the sangh organisation pelted stones at the car Kumar was travelling in, leading to police detaining five people. The members of Bajrang Dal hurled a shoe at the JNUSU leader while he was addressing a public gathering. Several members of Bajrang Dal had stormed the event and started shouting ”Kanhaiya Kumar Murdabad”.
The student leader is in the city to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, a Dalit icon Kumar regards as his role model.
This is Kanhaiya Kumar’s first visit to Nagpur after he was charged with sedition for allegedly organising and participating in an event at JNU where anti-national slogans were raised .
Kanhaiya and two other students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were arrested on sedition charges in February. They were released on 6-month interim bail in March.
The meeting has been organised by the Progressive Students’ Youth Action Committee. Several right-wing organisations have threatened to foil Kanhaiya’s meeting in Nagpur. The orange city is the headquarter of RSS and Kanhaiya in his speeches has severely criticised the organisation. Kanhaiya Kumar shot to fame after Delhi Police slapped sedition charges against him and other students for ‘anti- India’ speeches inside the JNU campus. He was arrested and later released on bail.
