Sukhbir Singh Badal was re-elected as president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) during the party’s general delegate session held at Teja Singh Samundari Hall within the Sri Darbar Sahib complex in Amritsar on Saturday. His nomination was proposed by working president Balwinder Singh Bhundar and seconded by senior leader Paramjit Singh Sarna.

The session saw attendance from top party figures, including Badal’s wife and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, senior leaders Bikram Singh Majithia, Daljit Singh Cheema, and Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal.

Badal had stepped down from the president’s post on November 16, 2024, after the Akal Takht declared him tankhaiya—guilty of religious misconduct—for the actions of the SAD-led government from 2007 to 2017. His resignation was formally accepted in January, following which the party launched a fresh membership drive before the leadership election.

Despite the past controversies, Badal’s unopposed return signals his continued stronghold over the party’s leadership and direction.
