Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Friday in a controversial statement called the ongoing protest in University of Hyderabad a ‘drama’. Swamy compared the student groups protesting over the suicide of Dalit scholar with “ruuning dogs”.

The BJP leader tweeted “The Hyderabad University drama is fast becoming the biggest con job of Communists and their running dog”.

Earlier on Thursday he demamded that University of Hyderabad should take a tough stand against the protesting student groups as they are not adhering the democratic principles.

There was no let up in protests by students at University of Hyderabad, demanding ouster of Vice Chancellor P. Appa Rao over the suicide of a Dalit research scholar as indefinite strike by seven of the protestors continued on Friday.

The revocation of suspension of four Dalit students by the executive council of the central university failed to pacify the students, who say that their prime demand is the resignation of the vice chancellor and action against him, two central ministers and others responsible for the suicide of Rohith Vemula.

“The VC must go. This (revocation) is a welcome decision. But we can’t celebrate it because Rohith is not there. We are not able to accept your decision. We have other demands like appropriate compensation and a job for one of the members of Rohith’s family,” students said.

Rohith Vemula hung himself with a banner of his union on Sunday, two weeks after he and four other students were suspended and banned from the hostel, the cafeteria and other common areas for allegedly beating an activist of a rival student union in August. The five students had been living outside the campus in a tent.
