Agriculture is the backbone of our nation. Farmers especially having small holdings have to struggle hard to meet the various needs and make a living. Many small and marginal farmers are getting low prices for their produce because of increased global production and lower demand for various commodities. We claim that India is predominantly an agricultural country. But those who grow food are forced to end their lives by the state and its institutions, including banks. Suicides are a common phenomenon and steps taken by the government so far have not mitigated their agony. A mere economic approach will not end farm suicides.
