Treat actresses at par with actors

In Hollywood during the 1990’s, Julia Roberts used to rule the roost. She was the highest paid actor inspite of being a woman. She was literally a brand name for cinema. If she acted in a movie, the movie was an instant hit. Pretty Woman, Notting Hill, Runaway Bride, My best friend’s wedding, Erin Brokowich (for which she won an Oscar) were instant hits. She was known for her beautiful smile and acting prowess. She was popularly known as America’s sweetheart (she has also enacted in a movie with the same title) and was the leading lady in Monalisa smile. However, beauty fades away with age and there was a sharp decline in her popularity as she aged. But the same was not true for her male counterparts. Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Richard Gere are still popular with the masses.

Similarly, take the example of the Indian film industry. Currently, Deepika Padukone is the number one actress in the industry. However, a decade later, her glory will fade away. Similar was the case with Kajol, Madhuri Dixit and Sri Devi. A decade ago, the chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol was unparalled. Kajol was known for her acting skills. But with time, she got married and was forgotten. Younger actresses came in to fill in the gap. However, the actors – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan gained more popularity with time. I fail to understand if the actors are said to mature with age and experience, why is it not true for the actresses?

Actresses too excel in their art with age. However, what sells is their beauty and sex appeal. That is why movies like Jism and Ragini MMS prove to be super hits. To increase TRP, directors have item songs in their movies. This is certainly cheap publicity. However, on the contrary, when it comes to actors, they sell as long as they can act, irrespective of hoe they look. They not only get paid more than actors, but they also get a share of the profit of the movie. When it comes to actresses, no matter how popular they are they always get paid much less than actors. Yes, this is the norm no matter how unfair it is.

People in India believe that women- centric roles won’t sell at the box office. However, movies like Kahaani and Queen have silenced people holding such opinions. Yes, actresses much be treated at pae with actors as both excel in their art with age.
