Yet another rape crime- India bleeds

In yet another shocking incident, a twenty year old young woman had been mercilessly raped by robbers keeping her husband at gunpoint who had gone to her house with the intention of robbing her family. After finding valuables of not more than Rs 15, ooo, they ended up raping the woman after pushing her husband and her father-in-law out of the house and locking the door from within. The woman’s cry fell on deaf ears as none of her neighbours rushed in to rescue her although they could hear her cries. Later when policemen asked them, some said that they were too scared to act while others stated that their doors had been locked from outside.

These repeated incidents of rape are growing at an alarming rate. Watching an episode of crime petrol, which is based on real life incidents, sends shudders down my spine. Imagine the state of shock and trauma for the victim! What was equally shocking was that no one came for her help. What are people afraid of? Are they afraid that similar things might happen to them? Are they afraid of being questioned by the police? What stops them from helping a victim? This is an example of hard heartedness.

Do we need to live in fear? As social beings, if we do not help each other when in a problem, then living would become very difficult. Besides, neighbours are meant to help each other in trouble. Also, too many rape incidents are being reported recently. This either shows that earlier such incidents went unreported contrary to now which is a good thing or crimes against women are on a rise. According to statistics, 93 women are raped in India every day. According to NCRB data, there is a massive surge in rape crimes being reported from 24,923 in 2012 to 33,707 in 2013.

The Nirbhaya incident which shook the nation and compelled the government to take important steps to curb rape crimes seems to have been forgotten. Delhi is still the rape capital of India, the number of rape crimes in Delhi seems to be increasing with each passing day. Same is true for other states. It is high time the government relooks at rape laws and act strictly even against juveniles so that it would deter others from committing such crimes in future. Lets make India a safe place for women.
