After the arrest senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal former Congress MP Nilesh Rane has become the latest victim of political vendetta. Rane surrendered before the Chiplum police in connection with the case of alleged assault and kidnapping filed by a party worker. Rane said that government machinery is being misused to settle political scores. He was taken for a medical examination after he surrendered.

Ever since the BJP government had come to power several leaders like Chhagan Bhujbal, Sameer Bhujbal and Nilesh Rane has been arrested. It had ordered for a probe into the various scams in which the Bhujbal’s family members name has cropped up. According to political observers the BJP is trying to gain an upper hand over the Congress and NCP ahead of 2017 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election. It is also attempting to weaken the NCP in Nasik which is considered to be the stronghold of Bhujbal. The Modi government has always been known for cutting the opposition to size. Chhagan Bhujbal and Narayan Rane had quit Shiv Sena to join NCP and Congress respectively.

Nilesh Rane said, “It’s an attempt of the state government to malign my reputation. They are working overtime to weaken our party’s base in Konkan. However, I have full faith in the judiciary and party workers have come forward to support me.”

“I am confident that I will be cleared of all charges. Our party workers are working hard and trying to connect with people,” added Nilesh.

The Bombay High Court had on Tuesday refused to grant pre-arrest bail to Rane and asked him to surrender before police on or before May 23.

The police had told the high court that there were serious allegations against Rane and his custodial interrogation was needed as investigations were still on.

A case was earlier registered by Thane police against Rane, his personal assistant Tushar Panchal and bodyguard Manish Singh under relevant IPC sections for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting Congress president of Chiplun taluka, Sandeep Sawant, in April.

According to the FIR, Rane and his accomplices had allegedly kidnapped Sawant and assaulted him on way to Mumbai for not attending a rally called by the former MP at Chiplun in Ratnagiri district to demand reservation for the Maratha community. Sawant was allegedly confined to a house at Andheri in Mumbai and later let-off, the complaint alleged.

Sawant had told Rane that he could not attend the rally because his mother was taken ill in a nearby village and he had to rush to be with her. On the basis of the complaint filed by Sawant, the Thane police had registered a case against Rane and his accomplices.
