Asian Games: India bag historic bronze in men’s table tennis

Indian table tennis squad on Tuesday bagged their first ever medal in the Asian Games as they won a bronze in Men’s Table Tennis Team event after conceding a 0-3 defeat against South Korea in the semi-final round.

India started with a defeat in the opening match as Sathiyan Gnanasekaran lost 11-9, 9-11, 3-11, 3-11 against South Korean opponent Sangsu Lee.

Achantha Sharath Kamal added to India’s woes as he also lost 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11 in the succeeding match.

In the third match, which was a must-win for India, Anthony Arputhraj could not keep the hopes for the final alive as he lost the clash 5-11, 7-11, 11-4, 7-11 to Woojin Jang.

In squash, India defeated Thailand 3-0 in their women’s team pool match. They will take on Indonesia, later in the day.

India’s total medal tally in the ongoing 18th edition of the Asian Games now stands at 45- eight gold, sixteen silver and twenty one bronze.
