The political turmoil within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) intensified on Monday after senior party MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claimed that nearly 20 TMC Members of Parliament had decided to extend support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and had formally communicated their decision to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The development marks a significant escalation in the internal crisis facing the Mamata Banerjee-led party, which has witnessed growing dissent and a series of political setbacks in recent days.
Speaking to PTI, Ghosh Dastidar said that a letter had already been submitted to the Lok Sabha Speaker informing him of the group’s decision to support the ruling alliance at the Centre.
“Nearly 20 TMC MPs, including me, have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla about our decision to support the NDA,” she said.
The Trinamool Congress currently has 28 members in the Lok Sabha and 12 members in the Rajya Sabha, making the reported move politically significant if confirmed.
Ghosh Dastidar also asserted that she continues to serve as the party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha and stated that the decision was taken after discussions with several fellow parliamentarians.
According to her, the group believes its future political course should align with the NDA in view of the prevailing political circumstances and public mandate.
“We have accepted the people’s verdict and believe that our future political course should be aligned with the NDA,” she said.
The claim comes amid an increasingly visible power struggle within the TMC, with reports of internal disagreements, resignations, and growing factionalism creating uncertainty over the party’s future direction.
The TMC leadership has not yet issued an official response to Ghosh Dastidar’s claims or commented on the alleged communication sent to the Speaker.
If the reported support from nearly 20 MPs materialises, it could mark one of the most significant political developments in West Bengal politics and substantially alter the dynamics within the opposition bloc at the national level.
