Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi has distanced himself from the arrest incident of his nephew Abu Aslam Qasim Azmi for allegedly being involved in an international drug racket. Delhi Police had arrested Aslam from Grand Hyatt Hotel, Vakola in Santacruz on Wednesday evening. Azmi said since he belonged to a political outfit his name is being in dragged by media. The Delhi Police has seized 5 kg of drug worth Rs 40 crore and arrested three persons Amit Agarwal (40), Avdesh Kumar (26) and Chandan Rai (31). The accused have been booked under the NDPS Act. Methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA is a renowned drug in Delhi, Mumbai and Goa. Cops are further investigating Abu Aslam’s involvement in the international drug cartel.

“Media is unnecessarily dragging my name after the arrest of Aslam who happens to be my nephew. They are only trying to malign my reputation by reporting about this incident. I have seven brothers. All their children are independent and looking after their own activities,” said Abu Azmi.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, “The accused had planned to smuggle the drugs to US and UK. They were planning to courier it across several regions of these countries. Abu Aslam was accompanied by another woman at Grand Hyatt whom he was supposed to marry. He used to run the cartel from hotel room.”

Abu Aslam used to work as a right hand man, handling Indian operations, for one Kailash Rajput who supplied drugs while operating from Dubai.

“Aslam had become friends with Kailash Rajput through common friends. Aslam worked as a cargo officer in Dubai till 2008. He returned back to India started a restaurant in Goa and developed contacts with drug traffickers who supplied drugs from Rajput. Azmi also made Mumbai his base. When Kailash Rajput was arrested around three years back by Mumbai police Azmi had helped him as he became his close aide,” said Yadav.

Aggarwal would procure the drug consignment and then pack it in the courier parcels, often between layers of garments, to be sent abroad.

Following a tip, cops laid a trap at Mahipalpur. Avdesh was apprehended while he was opening the door to his office, and was questioned. Around five kg of the drug was recovered from his possession. He gave up the details about Aggarwal and Chandan. Aggarwal revealed that the consignment was sent by Aslam from Mumbai. Later police arrested him from Grand Hyatt hotel.
