The recent building collapse incident at Ghatkopar has raised valid questions pertaining to safety of old buildings. The people, who lost their homes will suffer forever. Over and above they lost their earning members in the family thereby adding salt to the wound. They have no insurance cover. The compensation amount given by the state government is nothing but a peanut. How these families are going to manage for the rest of their life with the gloom fresh in their minds. The alternation in the ground floor flat was the root cause for the collapse. It is time that the government frames guidelines about the renovation of old buildings in the city.
