The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre here received a telephonic message late last evening from the ship requesting for evacuation of the cadet Patrick Kennedy who had suffered serious injury to the right hand from hammer while working on the deck, a Coast Guard release said.

The cadet was in pain and had been advised for evacuation by the Company Medical Officer. Under normal circumstances, the seamen are not permitted to disembark or to join the ship at Revadanda anchorage as it is not a designated immigration outpost. However, the ship Master requested MRCC Mumbai for medical evacuation to prevent formation of gangrene.

The Coast Guard coordinated with other agencies to facilitate the approvals for his disembarkation. Coast Guard Station Murud Janjira was directed to initiate necessary coordination with the local authorities.

The cadet was evacuated at 11.45 am today using a cargo net to avoid any further injury. He was then taken to the Nair Hospital here.
