A couple and their four-year-old child were killed on Friday after being hit by a speeding local train while crossing railway tracks in suburban Jogeshwari, a railway official said.

The victims were yet to be identified, the official said. “The incident took place between Jogeshwari and Goregaon stations on the Western Railway line when the trio was crossing railway tracks,” he said.

Police inspected the site and recovered their bodies and have been taken to Shatabdi hospital in Kandivali.

The incident took place on the Down fast line near the under-construction Oshiwara station between Goregaon and Jogeshwari stations at evening, said officials.

Railway officials said that the exact spot was between kilometre 23/15 and 24/1, a railway mechanism of mapping its tracks by way of poles and other structures along the tracks.

“The dead include an as-yet-unidentified male of around 40 years, a woman, also unidentified, of around 35 years and around four year old child. We believe they were all together and it is possible that they were knocked down while crossing the tracks. Prima facie it doesn’t look like they fell off some passing local train,” said an official.

Teams from both the railway police as well as the Railway Protection Force have fanned out in the adjoining civil areas along the tracks to find out the antecedents of the dead persons. A case has been registered with the Borivali railway police.
