Meanwhile, terrifying video has emerged of the moment armed police stormed through one of the terminals after the unfounded reports of gunfire.

In the shocking clip, uploaded to social media by Barcelona native Albert Salas, a large bang can be heard but this is not believed to be a gunshot.

Passengers can be seen hiding behind chairs and screaming as heavily-armed police move through the airport’s Terminal 8.

Just half an hour later, at about 10:15 pm (local time), Terminal 1 at New York’s main airport was also “closed” after “additional” calls of shots fired were received.

The Port Authority said “the terminal was evacuated out of an abundance of caution” and there was “substantial presence” of New York Police Department at the John F Kennedy (JFK) airport and LaGuardia airports as an investigation was launched.

The initial alarm spread through Terminal 8 and to Terminal 1, one of the officials said.

“There are no reported injuries or arrests at this time,” the agency said. “Preliminary investigation does not indicate shots were fired at JFK.”

The New York Fire Department told NBC News that it had crews on scene to lend assistance if needed. Port Authority and New York police were investigating.
