The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has issued a Note to the Controller of Legal Metrology of all States that it has come to their notice that some manufacturers and importers are selling pre-packed commodities at different (dual) MRPs in the same city/District/State. Hotels, restaurants, dhabas, airports, railway stations are charging rates above MRP which is in violation of Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 and Legal Metrology Act, 2009. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has in an Order dated 1.2.2016 stated that “there cannot be two MRPs, except in accordance with the law”

Earlier the Delhi High Court had issued  a stay order for not taking any action against Hotels and Restaurants for selling packaged commodities at a price higher than MRP. Action can be taken against hotels and restaurants for charging more than MRP. The Ministry has requested states to take immediate necessary action to protect the interest of consumers and to comply with the provisions of Law.

CGSI encourages consumers to check the MRP charged by vendors and if not found as per specifications  either in excess of the printed price or at a differential rate than normally available elsewhere, to register their complaint with the institution with the details by sending an email to mah.helpline@gmail.com  or call Maharashtra Consumer Toll free helpline 1800 22 2262. The organisation will collate all the complaints and take up the matter with the appropriate authorities so that manufacturers do not indulge in such incorrect practices.
