Gunmen fire on PIA plane in Pakistan’s Peshawar; 1 killed, 2 wounded

One woman passenger was killed and two stewards wounded after unidentified gunmen fired shots at a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane moments before it landed at Peshawar’s Bacha Khan International Airport on Tuesday night.

PIA flight number PK-756 from Riyadh to Peshawar was on its final descent towards the runway when shots were fired at the Airbus A310 aircraft carrying 78 passengers on board.

Pak media reports claimed that one woman passenger died in the firing, while two flights were injured. However, PIA is yet to officially confirm the death of the woman passenger.

The injured have been admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH). Pakistan daily Dawn identified one of the injured flight steward as Ijaz Chaudhry.

The police as saying that the shots could have been fired from a nearby residential area which is close to the airport.

Reports said five to six bullets hit the aircraft.

“We have to see whether the plane was targeted or whether it was hit by bullets from aerial firing which is common in these areas,” said a police officer.

Security forces have sounded a high-alert in the area and launched a search operation to nab the culprits.

All airports in Pakistan are on high-alert following the July 8 terror attack in Karachi when around 10 terrorists stormed the old Karachi airport terminal building killing 29 people. Security forces later gunned down all the terrorists.

The situation has been tense in Pakistan after the military started an offensive ‘Zarb-i-Azb’ against militants in North Waziristan.

Waziristan is next to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of which Peshawar is the capital.
