Her family members alleged that accused Subrata Sen, alias Raja (20), had been making advances for the last one year after meeting during practice sessions. But Sanghita rebuffed his advances. Subrata then started threatening her over the phone for sometime to take her life.

Sanghita’s family had also lodged complaints with the police. But they alleged that no action was taken. At around 4.30 pm, Sanghita was practising along with other players under the guidance of their coach, Swapan Das, at a volleyball training centre run by Natunpukur Association near her home.

Subrata suddenly arrived at the ground and called her for a talk. As Sanghita walked up to him, Subrata started quarrelling with her. During the altercation, he took out a sickle and attacked her with it, slashing her head and neck.

Fatally injured, Sanghita fell to the ground. Mr Das said he tried to stop Subrata by obstructing him with a chair, but suffered injuries in a finger on his right hand. Sanghita was declared brought dead at Barasat district hospital.

The body was sent for post-mortem. Raja, a resident of Shyamnagar in North 24 Parganas, is absconding. A case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Barasat police station.
