Road communication between Guwahati and Shillong remained cut off today following landslides triggered by heavy rainfall for the past few days.
Landslides were reported from the Byrinhat area evening of Saturday and again on Sunday at Unming near Nongpoh, bringing road traffic along National Highway 40 to a standstill, an official source said on Sunday.
The National Highway Authority of India has pressed into service several bulldozers to clear the landslide and the road is expected to be cleared by Monday.
Hundreds of vehicles have been stranded on both the Assam and Meghalaya sides.
NH-40 links Assam with Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram along with Southern Assam’s Barak Valley.
