Biometric details of Rohingyas will be collected in 2 months: J-K Governor

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik AV

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Monday said that the biometric details of Rohingya refugees will be collected within two months.

“Biometric details of Rohingyas will be collected within two months,” Malik said while addressing the media during the bi-annual ‘Darbar Move’.

On October 1, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said that all states have been asked to identify Rohingya refugees and collect their biometric data, a compiled report of which will be sent to Myanmar.

The Home Minister, while describing the Rohingya as illegal immigrants, had asked other political parties to not politicise the Centre’s efforts to identify them.

Rajnath’s directions came four months after he wrote a letter to the Jammu and Kashmir government, saying, “Such illegal migrations pose serious challenges and have security implications since some of the migrants have been found to have indulged in illegal activities and are vulnerable to radicalisation.”

Malik, while addressing the media, also expressed condolences on the death of Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secretary Anil Parihar and his brother, Ajeet in Kishtwar and said the terrorists who killed the brothers have been identified.

“Terrorists were frustrated as the local body polls were conducted smoothly; hence, they carried out this murder. The moral of the security forces is high, and no terrorists can disturb the panchayat elections,” he said.

Panchayat polls in the state are scheduled to begin on November 17. The voting will take place between 7 am and 2 pm and the entire poll process will be completed by December 17.

Devotees, media shouldn’t be stopped at Sabarimala: Kerala HC

Kerala HC AV

The Kerala High Court on Monday ruled that devotees and media should not be barred from entering the Sabarimala Temple.

The court said that the state government should not interfere in day to day activities of the temple and ordered a department-level inquiry on policemen who had damaged the vehicles during the October 17 protests.

Meanwhile, amid tight security, devotees of Lord Ayyappa on Monday began the trek from Nilakkal base camp to the hill shrine of Sabarimala ahead of the temple’s opening this evening.

After the special ‘Athazha Puja’, the temple will get closed on Tuesday evening.

In the wake of violent protests during the monthly pooja in October, the state police issued prohibitory orders at Pamba, Nilakkal and other areas near the holy shrine, and are maintaining vigil on vehicles going towards the temple.

The Pathanamthitta district administration has imposed Section 144, prohibiting the unlawful assembly, in Sannidhanam, Pamba, Nilakkal, and Elavunkal till November 6.

The Sabarimala Temple and its surrounding areas witnessed a series of protests in October over the Supreme Court’s decision allowing the females of all age group to enter the holy shrine. However, in spite of the top court’s order no women in menstruating ages were able to enter the sanctum sanctorum of the temple when it opened last time.

No more time to install vapour recovery devices at fuel stations: NGT to oil cos

NGT AV

The National Green Tribunal has refused to grant more time to state-owned oil firms to install vapour recovery devices at all fuel stations in the National Capital Region (NCR).

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said that the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a hazard to public health which has to be safeguarded by installing recovery devices.

It said that the installation of machines was necessary in view of the adverse effects of VOC chemicals like benzene, toluene, and xylene on human health and the environment.

Vapour recovery device is an instrument to capture displaced vapours that emerge from inside a vehicle’s fuel tank when petrol or diesel is dispensed into it.

“It is undisputed that release of VOCs is a hazard to the public health which is to be safeguarded by installing VRDs/VRS, under the Precautionary Principle and Principle of Sustainable Development, no activity can be allowed to be carried out resulting in damage to the public health,” said the bench also comprising Justice S P Wangdi.

“In this view of the matter, we do not find any justification to grant a further extension of time. In fact, there may be an issue of recovering compensation for damage to the environment already caused by the release of VOC,” the bench.

The green panel said that the difficulties in procuring devices or delay in granting approvals by the authorities cannot be a ground for continuing any activity affecting public health without safety standards.

The tribunal also said that its directions will apply to the NCR where the air quality is extremely bad in the present time and asked the oil firms to comply with it within three months.

The NGT had earlier directed the companies to install vapour recovery devices at all fuel stations by October 31 but they had moved a plea seeking an extension, saying that grant of approvals for vapour recovery devices was a time-consuming process as they had to be imported.

Demi Lovato is through with her rehabilitation stint.

The singer was in rehab since being hospitalised for a nearly fatal drug overdose in July.

“She just got back to LA a couple days ago. She seems to be doing well so far,” a source of Lovato told a leading magazine.

Last month, the singer’s mother Dianna De La Garza confirmed that Lovato had completed 90 days of sobriety.

The singer was spotted outside Matsuhisa restaurant on Saturday night, sitting beside clothing designer Henry Levy inside a car.

“Demi looked great and so happy to be out. They seemed like good friends who were catching up and excited to see one another. There wasn’t any PDA or romantic gestures, but she was smiling and laughing throughout dinner.

Ryan Reynolds trolls Hugh ‘Wolverine’ Jackman

Ryan Reynolds trolls Hugh AV

Hugh Jackman just got trolled by his fellow Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds.

Reynolds of ‘Deadpool’ fame took to Twitter and posted a parody video about how ‘The Wolverine’ star Jackman is contesting for the United States Presidential elections.

Reynolds does the commentary in the 40-second-long mock political advertisement. Released on Friday, the video talks about Jackman’s recent movie ‘The Front Runner’, where the ‘X Men’ star plays the role of a onetime presidential candidate Gary Hart.

The video, inspired by the mid-term election season, begins on a hilarious note as the introductory title reads, “But before voting begins, some people should consider these facts”.

Upping the comic quotient, the video goes on to point out that Hugh Jackman isn’t his real name.

In the next frame, a birth certificate of the ‘The Greatest Showman’ star appears which reveals his name as Hugh Michael Jackman.

The video even mocks about Hugh being from Milwaukee despite the individual speaking in “a charming accent”, which is indicative of the Australian accent he speaks in.

Jackman is even held responsible for the nation’s unemployment, as the parody accused him of walking off from playing ‘Wolverine’ in the X-Men movies.

As the video nears its end, a photo of Reynolds appears where he comically announces, “I’m not Ryan Reynolds and I approve this message”.

Jackman, well known for repeatedly playing X-Men superhero Wolverine, reacted on his Twitter handle in his own quirky way.

In the video posted by Hugh Jackman, he can be seen picking up dog poop from a photo of Reynolds lying on the road.
