People voted for change

Finally the BJP led NDA government has come into power by defeating the Congress party by a massive margin. This is the first time after 1984 any party has secured majority to form the government on its own. BJP itself has won 282 seats while the NDA alliance led by the party has won 336 seats which will enable them to form a government at the centre comfortably. After the Mandal era no major party has been able to secure majority and it had to seek the help of allies to form the government at the centre which is a tough task as one has to keep every party happy and also bear their tantrums. Many allies even threatened to withdraw support to the ruling party over trivial issues which results into collapse of the government.

People were unhappy with the rule of UPA government which was responsible for its failure to control inflation, corruption and fall of the rupee. Several scams like CWG, Coalgate, Adarsh Scam, Chopper scam, 2G spectrum scam, Railgate had been unearthed during the reign of the Congress party led UPA government. Later, social activist Anna Hazare had begun a campaign against the government to pass the Lokpal Bill. Hazare toured various states and asked people to vote the Congress party out of power for its failure to eliminate corruption.

The UPA government received flak for its inability to control rising inflation. Whenever journalists used to ask Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar about rising prices he would express his inability to curtail price rise. The UPA government’s decision to cap the number of subsidised cylinder to 6 per year had an adverse affect on citizens. As a result of this, huge confusion prevailed among people as many households were denied cylinders. Women were miffed with Congress decision as they distanced themselves from the party. Even though the number of subsidised cylinders were raised from 6 to 9 and to 12 per year but the damage was already done.

On the other hand, BJP appointed Narendra Modi as the chairman of election coordination committee. Modi revived the fortunes of the saffron party as he campaigned across the nation and held 437 rallies. Even though Congress attacked Modi several times but he remained unperturbed by it. Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar went a step ahead by saying that a chaiwallah can’t become the prime minister of the country. Modi nonetheless turned the tide in his favour by organising the ‘Chai per Charcha’ campaign as party workers discussed about his party’s policies and work done by him in Gujarat.

Rahul Gandhi was spearheading the rallies for Congress party but he was unable to connect with the masses and was completely overshadowed by Modi. Rahul lacked experience to take on a leader like Modi who has already proved himself in Gujarat. The slogan AB Ki Baar Modi Sarkar was chanted by everyone across the nation. Modi used technology like social media and google hangouts to communicate with voters.

There was a huge anti-incumbency factor against the Congress across the nation as people voted for BJP in large numbers which paved way for the Congress party’s debacle. Thus people voted for change this time instead of relying on tried and tested formula of caste based politics and minority appeasement. There were many loyal Congess voters who voted for the BJP as they were unhappy with the party’s performance. Finally, Modi has his work cut out and will have to deliver on the promises made by him and take fast-paced decision for sake of the nation’s development.

According to the sources, the builder is undergoing financial problems hence there has been a delay in the construction of the flat. Builder has promised the investors that he will refund the money on 26th May.

Two players approached by bookies in this IPL, says Sunil Gavaskar

The interim president of BCCI-IPL Sunil Gavaskar on Thursday admitted that two cricketers were approached by the bookies and the matter has been reported to the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit officials (ACSU).

Asked if players have been approached during this year`s IPL, Gavaskar replied, “There have been a couple and it`s been reported to ACU. They are looking into it.”

sunil-gavaskarThe Test legend also said that issue regarding Brendon McCullum being approached by the bookies is something to be concerned about but assured that no leak as far as confidentiality of cricketer`s discussions with ACSU has happened from IPL.

“I can assure you that the leak did not come from the IPL. I dont know where it came from. It`s an issue to be concerned. I`ve to say we have got an Integrity Officer (IO) attached with every team this time. It has made it a lot easier for players to communicate,” Gavaskar told the mediapersons.

“Sometimes players didn`t know what to do. Okay there was a number to contact. But a lot of people (players) were thinking if you contact, does your number come under their list.

“The anonimity and confidentiality aspect was something the players were not sure about. Now with the IO attached to every team it has become a lot of easier. If there has been an approach, people go and tell the officer so that he takes it forward.”

Gavaskar, along with his colleagues in the IPL governing council are trying to chalk up an elaborate roadmap in order to help young and talented cricketers handle their nascent careers which is loaded with money and stardom.

“I called up Sachin, Rahul, VVS and Anil Kumble — the four legends of the game, may be only the second day after taking over. They are contemporary cricketers, they know the current pressures, tensions and situations. We had a tremendous interaction. One of things came through, a lot youngsters need to be guided how to go about handling their careers,” Gavaskar stated.

“The fame that comes with the IPL suddenly, it`s a hugely covered event much more huge than Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy or Vijay Hazare,” Gavaskar said.

For him, this move is precisely being planned so that some of the talented youngsters are not left in the lurch without any proper guidance.

“Sometimes, a youngstes can get carried way, even an experienced can get carried away. Indian cricket could end up losing the youngsters. Or the youngster could end up losing valuable years till he realises that sport is a great leveller and can bring you down to earth very very quickly.

“In order to be able to take care of that a situation, that is what the BCCI exactly looking to do. We have to yet formulate the plan. This is just thinking of IPL GC which will go to the working committee of BCCI from there on it will take wings,” he said.

According to a source, “there could be scholarships for U-19 cricketers from a fund that will be created by IPL”.

However Gavaskar said that it is an ongoing process.

“This is an ongoing process I believe. Particulary, in the off-season, after this (IPL) for most of Indian players it will be an off season apart from those who selected for Indian team to England. May be, the odd player who go and play in the leagues in England.

“Majority of the players will be in India and that is the time we could have this ongoing programme. A call by BCCI will be taken very quickly to have the programme can get going.”

Gavaskar said that BCCI will also think about to how use the legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, in order to raise the standards of the game.

Police to seek explanation on use of drone for pizza delivery

DroneThe usage of unmanned drone for the first time in India by a city-based pizza shop for delivery here has come under scanner of Mumbai police, which will seek an explanation from the outlet as to why it did not inform them before carrying out the experiment.

Police will also ask Air Traffic Controller whether Francesco’s Pizzeria outlet had a correspondence with them.

When contacted, an ATC official said he did not know whether the outlet had sought permission from them.

The official, however, categorically stated, “As per norms, permission must be taken for flying any such object.”

“We are very sensitive towards anything that flies in the sky with the help of remote control. We will certainly ask the outlet’s administration as to why it did not inform us before carrying out this experiment. We also seek full details pertaining to the drone test,” said Madhukar Pandey, Additional Police Commissioner (Central Region) in whose jurisdiction the drone was flown.

“We will also ask the ATC if it was consulted by the outlet. After studying all the aspects, we will decide the future course of action,” Pandey said.

According to sources, terror threat has been lingering over the city and inputs available with police suggest that terror organisations might strike using paragliding and unmanned drones.

During special occasions such as Independence Day and Republic Day, certain city areas are declared as ‘no flying zones’ by Mumbai Police. In these areas, paragliding and use of remote-controlled micro-light aircraft is also not allowed.

On May 11, the financial capital, notorious for its traffic snarls, achieved a first in the country after Francesco’s Pizzeria used an unmanned drone to execute a delivery by taking the aerial route. The unmanned drone successfully delivered a pizza to a customer 1.5 kms away.

Francesco’s Pizzeria chief executive Mikhel Rajani yesterday stressed that this was only a test-flight but its results confirm that it can be used routinely in a few years.

A four-rotor drone took off with the order from its outlet in Lower Parel area and delivered it to a high-rise building in adjacent Worli area, Rajani had said, claiming that it was for the first time that the ubiquitous drone was used for such a purpose in the country.

The eatery, which has been in operations for two years, made a video of the delivery, and an auto engineer friend helped with making the flight possible.

Need to strengthen Cong, boost morale of party workers: Chavan

ChavanFormer Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Thursday admitted that the Congress was facing tough challenges and immediate corrective steps needed to be taken to boost the sagging morale of the workers after the party was decimated in the Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking to reporters, ahead of the constituency wise review meeting convened by state unit Chief Manikrao Thakre at Tilak Bhavan, Chavan, who was among the only two candidates to get elected to the Lok Sabha from the state, said the results were shocking and have to be micro-analysed.

“The organisation has to be strengthened and morale of the workers needed to be boosted. People oriented decisions need to be expedited,” he said.

He also said in areas where the leadership was weak and development work was lagging, the Congress had suffered.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan also attended the review meeting.

Among the constituencies that were taken up for discussion were Nanded and Hingoli, the only two successes in Maharashtra.

Other constituencies included Latur, Akola, Jalna, Dhule Nandurbar, Sindhudurg-Ratnagiri and Aurangabad.

NDA routed the Congress and NCP in Maharashtra, winning a massive 42 out of the total 48 parliamentary seats.

Two defeated Congress MPs Milind Deora and Priya Dutt openly Criticize upper Leadership

After a staggering defeat in the national election, the Congress is battling the blame-game. Congress leaders Milind Deora and Priya Dutt appeared to criticise the party leadership.

“Field party work & electoral battles are key to comprehend ground realities. This should form the basis for leadership posts in Congress,” Mr. Deora tweeted on a day a newspaper report quoted him as saying that “those with no electoral experience’ were calling the shots in the party and those taking advice should also bear responsibility.

“My comments are out of emotions of deep loyalty to the party, pain of our performance & a sincere desire to see us bounce back. Nothing more,” he added. His comments were seen as a critique of Rahul Gandhi, who led the party’s national election campaign, and his advisers.

Mr. Deora, a former union minister who lost his seat in Maharashtra, is the first Congress leader to go public with his criticism.

Two-time MP Priya Dutt, who also lost the polls, said for cautiously, “I would not really like to talk about Milind’s comments but there is disconnect between people on the ground and top leaders. The top leadership should take opinion from a wide range of people and MPs.”

Ms Dutt met party president Sonia Gandhi in Delhi today.

Responding to Mr. Deora’s comments, Congress leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi said, “After a win, this question is not applicable. Only after loss, the question is apt. Yesterday those who used to praise Rahul Gandhi, now they are blaming him. Rahul has taken full responsibility for the results.”

Air India Put on Cash-And-Carry Mode by Mumbai Airport Authorities

Air India has been put on cash-and-carry mode by Mumbai Airport authorities after its dues mounted to Rs. 450 crore even as the airline today said it has paid about Rs. 40 crore and certain outstanding were yet to be reconciled.

The GVK-led Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which runs the city airport, yesterday communicated its decision to the Air India management, MIAL sources said, adding that the airline has been “put on cash-and-carry mode as it has failed to clear the dues in the required time”.

Normally, airlines use airport services on credit but when the dues mount, they are asked instead to pay cash on a daily basis for availing the facilities.

The dues relate to various airport charges like those for landing, navigation, parking and other services, which an airline has to pay to the airport operator.

The national carrier, the sources said, has been told to pay at least Rs. 200 crore by June if it wanted to be taken off from the cash-and-carry mode. “As of now their cumulative dues stand at Rs. 450 crore,” they said.

Discounting this, senior Air India officials told that the airline had paid Rs. 650 crore to GMR-led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and over Rs. 100 crore to MIAL in 2013-14 to clear its backlog.

On top of this, about Rs. 40 crore was paid to MIAL only yesterday, they said, adding that dues to MIAL and DIAL are “yet to be reconciled since they have charged us interest on certain outstanding heads, which is not acceptable to Air India.”

Air India’s flight operations out of Mumbai would not be affected, the officials said.

Observing that payment of old outstandings were linked to equity infusion by the government, they said escrow accounts for both DIAL and MIAL have been created to pay dues relating to user development fee, development fee and passenger service fee which were collected and remitted on a monthly basis.

In addition, payments were also being made for parking space and landing, parking charges every month, the airline officials said.

Bollywood singer Ankit Tiwari, accused of rape, gets bail

A sessions court on Thursday granted bail to the Bollywood singer Ankit Tiwari, arrested earlier this month for allegedly raping a woman.

Judge V M Mohite asked Tiwari to furnish a cash bond of Rs. 20,000. Tiwari’s bail application said he had been falsely implicated, and there were several contradictions in the statement of the woman who has accused him of rape. It pointed out that the woman, who alleges that Tiwari had a sexual relationship with her, is married and has a child.

Tiwari (24), a playback singer, was arrested by the suburban Versova police earlier this month (on May 8) after the woman, allegedly his one-time girlfriend, filed a complaint saying that he raped her repeatedly between October 2012 and December 2013 after promising to marry her, but did not keep the promise.

Tiwari’s brother Ankur was also arrested for allegedly threatening the victim. The singer was booked by the police under sections 376 (rape), 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage) and 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Tiwari is known for the hit song ‘Sun Raha Hai Na’ from the film ‘Aashiqui 2’.

Inspired by Modi gambit, MNS may project Raj Thackeray as Maharashtra CM

Leaders of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Thursday said they were in favour of projecting the party president Raj Thackeray as the Chief Ministerial nominee ahead of the coming Assembly elections in Maharashtra.

The MNS office-bearers met, and unanimously decided that Raj Thackeray should be projected for the top post of the state, on the lines of BJP’s well-in-advance projection of Narendra Modi for the Prime Minister’s post.

“Today’s meeting was convened to boost the morale of the cadre,” MNS leader Pravin Darekar told reporters.

“If the people want to see Raj saheb lead the state, as was the case with Narendra Modi (at the national level) who was projected for the Prime Minister’s post, we will insist that he (Thackeray) agree to it,” Darekar said.

Thackeray was not present at the meeting. Darekar said the MNS chief was not slated to be present, but he would address a big rally on May 31, “to give a direction to the party”.

Asked about Bala Nandgaonkar, a key MNS leader, skipping two important party meetings in the wake of the Lok Sabha election results, Darekar said, “He is in Konkan with his family.”

He added that MNS workers were not demoralised by the party’s poor showing in the polls.

All the ten candidates of MNS lost in the Lok Sabha elections, and some of them forfeited their deposits. Its arch rival Shiv Sena, on the other hand, won 18 seats.

An MNS source said some organisational changes were expected before the Assembly polls which are due later this year.

Before detaining man under MPDA, his plea should be heard: HC

Observing that law had not been followed, the Bombay High Court has set aside an order of a District Magistrate taking a person under preventive custody.

The Jalgaon District Magistrate had passed an order on February 2 last year detaining Madhukar Ramkrushna Patil under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug Offenders, Dangerous Persons and Video Pirates Act (MPDA) to prevent him from acting in any manner prejudicial to the maintenance of public order.
However, the detenu made a representation to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), which was not considered at all, prompting the court to hold that the law envisages that such representation made by a detenu should be considered.

As this had not been done, the detention order had been vitiated, Justice MS Sonak and Justice Abhay Oka said recently while hearing a petition filed by Patil.

“The facts of this case indicate that there is virtual non-consideration of the detenu’s representation by Additional Chief Secretary (Home). As observed earlier, even delay in consideration of representation, would render the detention unconstitutional,” the judges remarked.

“The representation must be taken up for consideration as soon as it is received and unless it is absolutely necessary to wait for assistance from some other source, it must be dealt with expeditiously and the final decision communicated to the detenu,” said the bench.
In matters of preventive detention, there is a dual obligation upon the government and corresponding dual rights in favour of a detenu, namely to have his representation independently considered by the government, and to have that representation in the light of all facts and circumstances of the case considered by an Advisory Board, the judges opined.

The fact that Article 22(5) of the Constitution enjoined upon the Detaining Authority to afford the detenu the earliest opportunity to make a representation must implicitly mean that such a representation must, when made, be considered and disposed of as expeditiously as possible, they observed.

In this case, there is no consideration at all, much less disposal of the representation made by the detenu-petitioner. This is sufficient to vitiate the continued detention of the petitioner.
