In a tragic incident, a 13-year-old boy died after a two-storey building collapsed in the Keezhillam area of Kerala’s Ernakulam district, police said. The deceased identified as Harinarayanan was asleep when the house collapsed on him.

His grandfather Narayanan Namboothiri has been admitted to the hospital after he was critically injured.

There were 7 members of the family present inside the house when this mishap happened. But nobody was injured apart from these two.

The boy was rushed to the Perumbavoor Taluk hospital, but he could not be saved. Narayanan Namboothiri who sustained head injuries is now in the ICU.

Station House Officer (SHO) of the Kuruppumpady Police Station said, “We have not yet identified the reason for the building collapse. But it might be because of continuous rain in that particular area which affected the walls of the house which was built by using bricks.”

Harinarayanan and his grandfather were the only people were at the ground floor of the two-story building at the time of this mishap. They were rescued with the help of Fire and Rescue services. We have used three earth movers for that. The neighbours rescued Harinarayanan’s sister.”

Ernakulam District Collector Dr Renu Raj sought a report from Perumbavoor Tahsildar.

“After hearing a loud noise, the boy’s mother and sister went upstairs to check what had happened. He had gone into his grandfather’s room by then and was sitting in front of a table and seemed to be trapped between a cement board,” said Ajayakumar NP, chief of Rayamangalam Panchayat. The sister miraculously escaped as they went upstairs. And another sister, his father and uncle, who all stayed at home, was abroad, were abroad.”

The boy, an eighth-standard student was rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries where he passed away.

“Apart from the two floors, there were roof panels installed above the roof. To ensure the building did not collapse further, a JCB was brought in to support the remaining structure. Then a part of the room where they were open was cut open. The grandfather was then moved outside after cutting,” a firefighting officer said.

Two firefighting units from Perumbavor Fire Station and one from Muvatupuza Fire Station were rushed to the site and District Fire Officer K Harikumar led the rescue operation. The body of the deceased was handed over to relatives after an autopsy and the body was cremated on Thursday evening.

Kurupamabadi Police is probing the matter.

Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi slammed TMC govt. over corruption charges against Partha Chatterjee

Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Meenakashi Lekhi on Thursday slammed Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal over the corruption charges against former state minister Partha Chatterjee claiming that who used to chant “Maa, Maati, Manush” now only cared for “money, money and money” and questioned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s silence on the issue.

At a press conference, the BJP leader claimed that Chatterjee, who has been arrested in connection with the teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal, owned a luxury flat in Kolkata where he just kept his dogs.

“I want to remind the people that those who used to raise the slogan of ‘Maa, Maati, Manush’ in Bengal, today they only care about ‘Maya Maaya, Maya’ that is ‘money, money, money’. See the documents of Partha Chatterjee or statements of Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of the former West Bengal Minister, everything is becoming clear from this. See the countless assets of Arpita, see the documents, about 50 crores cash have been found, besides that 9 kg of gold. Apart from this, their minister’s truth is coming to the fore,” Lekhi said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has recovered approximately Rs 50 crore in cash, besides a huge amount of gold jewellery from residences linked to Chatterjee’s aide Arpita Mukherjee.

“The name of Monalisa Das, another acquaintance of Partha Chatterjee, is coming to the fore. (She) was admitted to a university in 2014, is today a professor there and the head of the department of Bengali. She has 10 flats in her name. One of them is a super luxury flat where Partha Chatterjee only keeps his pet dogs. Mamata Banerjee, who is the Chief Minister of the state is silent over the scam,” said Lekhi.

Partha Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the School Service Commission (SSC) scam in West Bengal on July 23.

The arrest of Partha Chatterjee followed Rs 21 crore in cash and jewellery worth above Rs 1 crore being recovered from the Kolkata residence of Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of the former education minister.

“Two of Arpita Mukherjee’s statements have come. She said Partha Chatterjee turned her house into an ATM and the money was being distributed from top to bottom. It is understood who is the lower one, but who is the upper one. This should also be investigated. Arpita Mukherjee’s statement is also very important,” the BJP leader added.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress on Thursday suspended Chatterjee from the party leaving it to him to defend himself in the Enforcement Directorate probe into the teacher recruitment scam.

Mamata Banerjee also removed Chatterjee as a minister in the state government. Chatterjee was considered one of the most trusted lieutenants of the Chief Minister, a “go-to” man and was regarded third in the party hierarchy after the chief minister and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

“There will be zero tolerance for corruption. Investigating agency must complete the probe within the time limit. Even in Sarada’s case nothing happened, it’s just lingering. There should be a time-bound investigation,” Abhishek Banerjee said.

Lekhi also took a dig at Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain, who is also in ED custody in connection with the money laundering case. “Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain, from whom Rs 4.5 crores were recovered and some properties have been found a month before the arrest, the ED also attached one of his properties,” she said.

She also cited the order of the Delhi High Court in the Satyendar Jain case and said that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is still silent even after the Delhi High Court’s guidance to the Chief Ministers to control corruption.

The Union Minister said, “On July 27, the Division Bench of Justice Satish Chander Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad of Delhi High Court said the Council of Ministers has a collective responsibility to sustain and uphold the integrity of the Constitution of India, and it is for the chief minister to act in the best interest of the state and consider whether a person who has a criminal background or has been charged with offences involving moral turpitude should be appointed and should be allowed to continue as a minister or not.”

Referring to the court’s observation, Lekhi said the court pointed out that Dr BR Ambedkar when he was writing the constitution, said that good governance is only in the hands of good people. Even though the Court cannot sit in judgment of what is good or bad, it certainly can remind constitutional functionaries to preserve, protect and promote the ethos of the Constitution. There is a presumption that the Chief Minister would be well advised and guided by such constitutional principles, she said.

The security forces detected an anti-tank mine near the Bandh Tip area of the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

The anti-tank mine, which was found buried in the field was later defused by Bomb Disposal Squads (BDS).

In May, the Punjab Police recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) equipped with RDX packed in a metallic black coloured box weighing approximately 2.5 Kg from Naushehra Pannuan village in the Tarn Taran district and arrested two persons.

Earlier in January, the security forces recovered and destroyed more than 200 detonators in the Shindra area of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was carried out by a joint team of the Indian Army and Bomb Disposal Squads (BDS) of the Army and police.

A suspected bag was found hidden alongside a route by the patrol of the Army in the village Shindra area of Poonch. Thereafter, BDS teams of Army and Police, from DPL Poonch, reached the spot, recovered the bags and destroyed more than 200 detonators on the spot.

A major incident has been averted by the alert teams of the Army in recovering these detonators which could have been planned to disrupt NH-144 and long-lived peace in the region of Poonch by the inimical elements.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police earlier this month spotted yet another drone flying near the Samba International Border in Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier on July 4, the villagers in the Rajpura area along the Indo-Pakistan international border in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir are said to have spotted a Pakistani drone.

Earlier this year in May, security forces shot down a Pakistani drone carrying seven sticky or magnetic bombs and seven UBGLs (Under Barrel Grenade Launchers) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district.

The incident took place May 29, 2022, near Rajbagh police station in Kathua district, in the border area of Talli Haria Chak. Seven UGCL grenades and seven magnetic and sticky bombs were discovered in the aftermath of the drone’s crash.

9,000 crores of the budget already given to Indian defense industries for ammunition

General Manoj Pande

Emphasising the need for self-reliance and sufficiency in critical defence requirements, the Chief of the Indian Army staff, General Manoj Pande, on Thursday, said that a budget of 9,000 crores has already been given to Indian Defence industries for ammunitions.

According to the Army Chief, our forces need a large quantity of ammunition as we are one of the largest armies with live borders, for which “Four of the categories that are under trial and 9,000 crores of the budget has already been given to the Indian Defence industries for ammunitions. Although, there are challenges that need to be addressed and processes that need to be simplified,” he said.

“Our external dependence on armaments and ammunitions have been a matter of concern and the reversing of this trend which we are witnessing is quite encouraging,” he said addressing a special session of the second conference on Military Ammunition Ammo India 2022′ on its second day.

Highlighting the potential for domestic and foreign players in the Indian defence production, he stated, “Atmanirbharta does not mean isolating from the world, but it is self-sustaining and self-generating capability to promote efficiency, quality and resilience.”

“It has been unequivocally stated that collaboration with foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) is intrinsic to Atmanirbhar Bharat and we have moved from a relationship of buyer-seller to a co-development and co-production with our foreign partners,” he said, adding that the situation on the Northern borders has taught us to be self-reliant.

Speaking on the ongoing world affairs, he mentioned that external dependence on other countries for weapons should be reversed. “Russia-Ukraine conflict, the uncertainty in our neighbourhood has taught us that our armed forces should be able to handle the wide spectrum of tasks,” he said.

He further emphasised that the futuristic approach in defence production is important for strengthening the national interest.

Research and Development and technological advancements are also important for strong self-reliant capabilities, and the capabilities to forecast the impact using Artificial Intelligence is also important, he added.

He termed the ongoing reforms in the defence sector as an ‘opportunity’ for the foreign OEMs to partner with Indian companies and work for shared objectives.

There is a huge potential for exports which can also contribute to the vision of our honourable Prime Minister’s vision of a $5 trillion economy.

“Therefore, the vision of achieving Atmanirbharta in ammunition requires a synergised approach from all stakeholders. Together with the need to turn the initiative into another success story and a win-win situation for all,” he said while underscoring the potential in exports to contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a USD 5 trillion economy.

Self-reliance is among the key factors for the military capability of any nation, he said that a holistic, all-encompassing, well-calibrated, multi-pronged and futuristic approach in defence production is fundamental to ensure safeguarding the national interest.

“Atmanirbharta in defence production does mean limited to production but it should also encompass evolving homegrown capabilities and technologies. For a holistic and self-reliant strategy, it is imperative that ammunition life cycle management capabilities are concurrently established,” he asserted while mentioning that a significant investment was also needed in establishing Research and Development infrastructure, testing and evaluation capabilities to meet our ammunition needs.

He further stated that a pragmatic and actionable indigenous defence production strategy is needed to ensure a secure and sustained supply of ammunition and armaments as per our national security needs.

“There is also a need to share the experiences and technical knowledge of DRDO, OFBs and other PSU units with the industry to build new capabilities. We need to have a more collaborative and cooperative framework in which all stakeholders would work together to reduce the import dependence and provide the required impetus to the domestic capabilities,” Army Chief added.
