India’s wheat ban affects price over staple cereal globally and Ukraine war: FAO

The price of wheat has jumped in the international markets after India announced a ban on the export of the staple cereal and due to the reduced production prospects in Ukraine following the Russian invasion, the UN food agency has said.

The FAO Cereal Price Index averaged 173.4 points in May, up 3.7 points (2.2 per cent) from April and as much as 39.7 points (29.7 per cent) above its May 2021 value.

“International wheat prices rose for a fourth consecutive month, up 5.6 per cent in May, to average 56.2 per cent above their value last year and only 11 per cent below the record high reached in March 2008,” it said on Friday.

lightly improved crop conditions in the United States of America, seasonal supplies in Argentina and the imminent start of Brazil’s main maize harvest led maize prices to decline by 3 per cent, however, they remained 12.9 per cent above their level of May 2021, it said.

International rice prices increased for the fifth successive month in May.

Quotations strengthened in all the major market segments, but monthly increases were least pronounced (2.6 per cent) for the most widely traded Indica varieties, amid ample supplies, especially in India, it said.

The FAO Sugar Price Index declined by 1.1 per cent from April, as a bumper crop in India buoyed global availability prospects.

“The recent monthly decline in international sugar price quotations was triggered by limited global import demand and good global availability prospects, mostly stemming from a bumper crop in India,” it said.

Last month, India announced that it was banning wheat exports in a bid to check high prices amid concerns of wheat output being hit by the scorching heat wave.

Wheat exports were allowed on the basis of permission granted by the Indian government to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their governments.

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan had told the Ministerial Meeting on ‘Global Food Security Call to Action’ chaired by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken under the US Presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of May that India is “committed to ensuring that such adverse impact on food security is effectively mitigated and the vulnerable cushioned against sudden changes in the global market.

In order to manage our own overall food security and support the needs of neighbouring and other vulnerable developing countries, we have announced some measures regarding wheat exports on May 13, 2022.”

The Indian government categorically rejects the OIC Secretariat’s comments says, “unjustified and narrow-minded comments”

MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi

India on Monday firmly rejected the recent statement by the General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) about “unwarranted and narrow-minded comments”.

Responding to media queries regarding the statement, the Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “We have seen the statement on India from the General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Government of India categorically rejects OIC Secretariat’s unwarranted and narrow-minded comments.”

The 57-member OIC had raised concerns against the “systematic harassment of minorities in India” on Sunday. Meanwhile, India conveyed to Qatar and Kuwait that it had taken strong action against those who made controversial remarks on Twitter against the minorities.

“The Government of India accords the highest respect to all religions. The offensive tweets and comments denigrating a religious personality were made by certain individuals. They do not, in any manner, reflect the views of the Government of India. Strong action has already been taken against these individuals by relevant bodies,” read the MEA release.

“It is regrettable that OIC Secretariat has yet again chosen to make motivated, misleading and mischievous comments. This only exposes its divisive agenda being pursued at the behest of vested interests,” said Bagchi. He urged the OIC Secretariat to stop pursuing its communal approach and show due respect to all faiths and religions.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday suspended its spokesperson Nupur Sharma from the party’s primary membership and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal after their alleged inflammatory remarks against minorities.

BJP government failed to restore normalcy in the troubled Kashmir

There is a need for immediate steps to end the migration of Kashmiri Pandits. Just making movies and provoking their sentiments is not a solution to the Kashmir crisis. Amid an alarming spike in targeted killings in Kashmir, what the government did is they just ordered the transfer of 177 Kashmiri Pandit teachers posted in Srinagar to safer locations following demands to be relocated. Its high time that the government should spell out its policy for restoring normalcy in the union territory, rattled by a series of targeted terrorist killings. Emphasizing the need for greater sensitivity towards the people of Kashmir, he said, normalcy and peace cannot be brought there through propaganda. A lot of statesmanship is required to address the Kashmir issue, which is currently lacking. People are being killed in offices and even government offices are not secure.

The government should secure all affected people and their offices…and this has to be done in the next few days, as we do not want to hear that more innocents have died. Why do they have to always leave the valley and relocate somewhere, why can’t they live peacefully in their location and houses. BJP came to power seven years ago promising all bit things, they were supposed to rehabilitate Kashmiri Pandits, but no such thing ever happened because the government lacks the will. Noting that the unity of the country is most important, enough security and protection should be provided to vulnerable people so they don’t have to move out of Kashmir. Don’t let migration happen from Kashmir as it is not good for Kashmir and is neither in the country’s interest.

The Kashmir issue is complex and it is unfortunate that there is a lack of diplomacy in addressing it. The Kashmir problem is bigger than any law. Government has to look at Kashmir with a humble approach. Hundreds of fear-stricken Kashmiri-Pandits left the Valley for the Hindu-majority Jammu district even as the Centre turned down their demand for relocation. Amid this, a prominent Pandits’ body, the Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti (KPSS), in an open letter to the J&K Chief Justice, sought his intervention to allow frightened Pandits to leave the Valley.

Grooves of vehicles, carrying Pandit employees and their families, left the Valley dark in the morning from the Pandit transit colonies in south Kashmir’s Mattan and Vessu, Srinagar’s Sheikhpora and north Kashmir’s Baramulla and Kupwara. As if they are some terrorists and they are supposed to be living in fear. Kashmiri Pandits living at the Mattan transit colony in Anantnag claimed that over 80 per cent of the families left for Jammu since June 1. Government gave only hollow assurances from the administration. They are not feeling safe after the recent killings. Out of the 96 families living in the Mattan colony, only a dozen are left behind. They too will leave this place in the coming days. When the Modi government cannot protect them then why do they promote movies like Kashmir fine to scratch their wounds?

There are back-to-back killings in the Valley. The killings of a schoolteacher and a bank manager have shattered our faith in the security system. Our only demand is to relocate the employees outside Kashmir till the situation improves. Posting employees to district headquarters won’t help or protect them.  The Jagti camp in Jammu, which was set up in the 1990s, received 120 Pandit families from north Kashmir’s Baramulla and Kupwara districts in the past 24 hours. The killing of Pandits has not stopped since 1990. In the 1990s. Each Time BJP made it a political issue to garner votes but even today they don’t have any solution to offer. The ongoing attacks are a clear violation of the right to life, which is guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, that on the one hand, the administration failed to protect their lives and on the other hand, it does not let them leave the Kashmir Valley so that they can protect their lives.

There should be timely investigation into all the targeted killings in the past eight months in Kashmir. All the officers and officials whose involvement or lapse is proved in the preliminary allegations should be suspended without any further delay. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) should be constituted to submit its report within a stipulated time and it should be monitored by the High Court. The bloodshed of innocent civilians is unacceptable and against humanity. It goes against the basic spirit and concept of Kashmiriyat. Kashmiri Pandits are deeply shocked and distressed at the killing spree that has dented the image of Kashmir again and is against its cultural ethos.

A new cabinet is to be sworn in on Sunday in Odisha, after all ministers in the Naveen Patnaik led BJD-ministry resigned a day before to allow the chief minister to reshuffle his ministry.

Patnaik who recently completed 23 years in office apparently wants to give a new look to his ministry before the 2024 elections to the Lok Sabha and Assembly, analysts said.

This is the first time in the political history of Odisha that all ministers were directed to quit.

Sources in the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) said that more than six of the 20 ministers who resigned are likely to be dropped from the new ministry.

Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal has been informed about the oath-taking ceremony which will be held on Sunday at the state secretariat, the Lok Seva Bhavan.

The new ministers will take the oath of office at 11.45 am at a function to be held at the Convention Centre on the premises of the Lok Seva Bhavan on Sunday, a highly placed source in the Raj Bhavan told PTI.

Sources said that all ministers have submitted their resignation letters to Patnaik within 7 PM Saturday, following which some of the would-be ministers received phone calls to remain prepared for the oath-taking ceremony on Sunday.

Update:

Bracing for the 2024 Assembly elections, Odisha Chief Minister Navin Patnaik on Sunday recast his council of ministers, inducting five women ministers, besides giving larger representation to the youth as 21 MLAs took the oath of offices.

The new council of ministers was constituted after all 20 ministers in Odisha had resigned on Saturday. The reshuffle has been done to give an opportunity to new faces and introduce a combination of young and experienced leaders from BJD into the cabinet ahead of the 2024 general and assembly elections.

The swearing-in ceremony took place in the new convention centre of Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar. A total of 21 Ministers, including 13 Cabinet and 8 Minister of State (Independent charge), took oath in the Naveen Patnaik-led state council of ministers. Five women MLAs were inducted in the council of ministers, including three as Cabinet Ministers.

In the last cabinet, only two women were part of the council of ministers. The newly-inducted women cabinet ministers are Pramila Mallik, Usha Devi and Tukuni Sahu.

Jagannath Saraka, Niranjan Pujari, Ranendra Pratap Swain, Prafulla Kumar Mallik, Pratap Keshari Deb and Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak are among Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLAs who took oath as new cabinet ministers. Further, Pradip Kumar Amat, Naba Kisore Das, Ashok Chandra Panda and Rajendra Dholakia were also administered oath of office and secrecy by Governor Ganeshi Lal at the ceremony.

The MLAs who were inducted as Minister of State (Independent charge) include Samir Ranjan Dash, Aswini Kumar Patra, Pritiranjan Gharai, Srikanta Sahu, Tusharkanti Behera, Rohit Pujari, Rita Sahu and Basanti Hembram.

Some of the ministers who have performed well in their respective offices and still dropped from the cabinet are likely to get important responsibilities in the party organization in view of the next election, according to sources.

The Naveen Patnaik government has completed three years of its fifth consecutive term as the Chief Minister of Odisha on May 29. All Advisors/Chairpersons of 23 different departments/Corporations/ Boards etc shall cease to be in office with effect from June 5 (Sunday), Planning and Convergence Department has issued an official notification, after the order passed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, read order by the state government.

First Sologamy case in India as Gujarat girl announced to marry herself

First Sologamy case in India as Gujarat girl announced to marry herself 13

You must have a question in mind: do people really marry themselves? Well, of course, they do. Why not? It is really, occasionally being done. Although, without supporting laws, I expect they are civil ceremonies and not licensed. This trend started gaining quite some momentum lately. Apparently, this trend was started in 1993 in the US when a woman named Linda Baker decided to marry on her 40th birthday. It might sound quite terrifying on the surface, but on second thought, the idea of sologamy really advocates self-love on another level. It is widely considered the first publicized act of self-marriage which was attended by around 75 of Baker’s friends, where the bride said “I do” to honour her in sickness and in health until the day she was not there.

Self-love is one big factor which gets neglected so often nowadays, especially in this 21st century! Most people are overly critical of themselves. Look around, there are just so many failed marriages and relationships and the most prominent reason you’ll hear is “He/She wasn’t the right person for me.” So why won’t one choose to marry oneself, right? But we all need to marry ourselves first before marrying someone else. Many times, the so-called ‘wrong person’ isn’t actually that bad but a pretty good person. So, why did the marriage/relationship fail? That question has a manifold answer. However, one big reason which is often neglected is: due to lack of self-love. In any relationship, we make many pretentious vows; such as I promise to always be by your side and never leave you. Is it even physically and mentally possible to always do so? Hell, no!

Now in 2022, India is all set to enter the list of countries to witness a sologamy marriage. During the pandemic, we came across several stories of women from around the world marrying themselves without a partner. Recently, a 24-year-old Kshama Bindu from Gujarat announced she will get into a nuptial tie with herself. The wedding will take place on June 11, according to the Hindu customs such as pheras, wedding vows etc. Not just this, she has also planned a Goa honeymoon for herself.

The only things missing from this unique wedding will be the groom and the baraat. Sologamy is the act of marrying oneself in a public ceremony, also referred to as self-marriage or autogamy. While such a marriage has no legal sanction or status, many use the symbolic ceremony as an act to emphasize their self-love and independence. Self-marriage is a commitment to be there for yourself and unconditional love for oneself. It’s also an act of self-acceptance. People marry someone they love. Some people love themselves and hence, such weddings.

Kshama Bindu would be seen decked up in her red bridal outfit, with henna on her hands and vermilion powder in her hair parting, the bride will do the customary seven rounds around the sacred fire, she tells me on the phone from her home. Pre-wedding rituals such as Haldi (where turmeric is mixed with oil is applied to the bride) and sangeet (music and dance) will be held earlier in the day. After the wedding, there won’t be any Bidayi ritual for her.

The news has also started a debate on social media. Some applauded her saying she would be an inspiration to many, but most people just tried to wrap their heads around the concept of sologamy. One woman on Twitter wondered what the need for marriage as if there was no one else involved. Another said it appeared that Ms Bindu was just trying to run away from family responsibilities. Some even criticised sologamy as “a bizarre and sad act” and blamed it on “chronic narcissism”.

To her critics, Ms Bindu has “only one thing” to say: “It’s my decision to marry who I want – whether it’s a man or a woman or myself. And by marrying myself, I want to normalise sologamy. I want to tell people that you come into the world alone and you leave it alone. So, who can love you more than yourself? If you fall, it’s you who are going to have to pick yourself up.”
