64,656 criminal cases were registered in Mumbai in 2021 2

Briefing the media about crime statistics in the financial capital, Police commissioner Hemant Nagrale said 51,068 criminal cases were registered in 2020 (as compared to 64,656 in 2021) and in 2019 this figure was 41,931. The police commissioner told the media that there is a jump of 26 per cent cases in 201 from 2020, mainly due to a rise in offences related to violation of COVID-19 measures, while incidents of crime against women stood at 5,496 last year, up from 4,539 in the year before that.

He said the increase in criminal cases was mainly due to registration of a large number of offences under the IPC section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), which was invoked against those not following COVID-19-related protocols and violating curbs put in place to stem the spread of the infection.

Section 188 IPC deals with people disobeying orders passed by a public servant and provides for jail terms ranging from one to six months. For those violating orders passed under the Epidemic Diseases Act, which was invoked when the coronavirus pandemic hit India in 2020, section 188 of the IPC is the provision under which punishment is given by courts. Nagrale was speaking to reporters at an event organised for the publication of ‘Annual Report-2021’. Such a report was last published in 2006, an official said.

A total of 30,843 cases were registered under the IPC section 188 in Mumbai in 2021 as compared to 22,824 in 2020, he said. The overall crime detection rate in 2021 was 82 per cent, up from 79 per cent in 2020, the police commissioner stated. According to the report, 177 offences were registered per day in 2021 and the number of murder cases increased by 3 per cent compared to 2020. There was a 20 per cent increase in property-related offences in 2021 at 10,418 from 8,646 in 2020, it said.

Last year, the Mumbai police focused on tackling crimes against women and those happening in the cyber world, Nagrale said. Crimes against women included rape, kidnapping, molestation, eve-teasing, harassment under IPC section 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) murder, suicide, mental and physical harassment due to other reasons. Overall, crime against women in 2021 has decreased by 942 when compared to 2019, but when compared to 2020, the cases have increased by 957, he said.

Mumbai saw the registration of 5,496 cases under this category in 2021, 4,539 in 2020 and 6,438 in 2019. The overall detection rate of crime against women in 2021 was 79 per cent, down from 83 per cent in 2020, he said. Most of the undetected cases related to live-in relationships or marriage promises are not fulfilled, he said. According to the report, there was a 21 per cent increase in crimes related to women in 2021. There was a 15 per cent increase in rape cases in 2021 (888) as compared to the year before that (776). This figure was 1,015 in 2019.

Speaking about rape cases, he said ‘friends’ and ‘social media friends’ formed the category for the highest number of accused in such instances. The known accused category (where victims were acquainted with the accused) accounted for the second-highest number of offenders, he said.

Rape incidents where minors were victims and were committed by neighbours were down in 2021 as compared to 2019.

Speaking about instances of kidnapping and missing persons between 2014 and 2021, Nagrale said a total of 76,467 victims in such cases were traced out of 86,349.

As many as 4,465 kidnapped boys were traced out of 4786 cases, whereas 8,596 abducted girls were traced out of 9,124 cases, he said.

In 2021, 4,185 kg of drugs and narcotics substances were seized under the NDPS Act (called ‘NDPS property’ in the report) as compared to 1,127 kg in 2020 and 1,276 kg in 2019, he said.

In terms of value, the recovery in 2021 was worth Rs 151,40,96,851 and Rs 28,83,78,669 in 2020, the police commissioner said.

On economic offences, the IPS officer said in 2021, Rs 62.84 crore of assets and other items were seized in such cases out of which Rs 39.84 crore worth of property was returned to complainants and investors.

A total of 21,81,628 ‘challans’ (fine receipts) were issued by the Mumbai traffic police in 2021 for violation of rules and more than Rs 56 crore was recovered from offenders, he said. As many as 8.06 lakh cases of two-wheeler riders driving without helmets were detected, Nagrale said.

Speaking about disciplinary actions against erring law enforcement personnel, Nagrale said 81 police officers were suspended in 2021.There were 2,437 police officers and other personnel who were punished on various grounds, while 32 officials were dismissed from service, he said.

Police personnel were at the forefront of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in Mumbai and 126 such personnel, including 87 constables, died while performing various duties, the IPS officer said.

Rest in Peace Bappi Da 4

A very humble human and great singer Bappi Da had a special bond with me; he is the recipient of the Newsmakers Achievers Award as Lifetime 2018, that evening veteran singer Asha Bhosle, Bappi Da lit up the moment with their beautiful songs. I had the privilege to be with both of them on various occasions. They are really tall people with a humble approach to life, in the same year I was in Russia. Indian cinema was incredibly popular in the Soviet Union. And the movie Disco Dancer was the last Indian movie screened in the USSR, which achieved a lot of popularity. It occupies 8th position among most-watched foreign movies in the USSR. Mithun Chakraborty got very popular and loved after the movie got released. And the song Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja is very famous among locals.

Knowing that we are Indians, they used to ask me …from which city; in reply whenever I said Mumbai, they used to say “Oh! Bollywood city?   And the very next moment they used to sing Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja. I made a lot of friends there talking about Bappi Da and his songs. One day we were on a street tour, during the tour due to heavy snowfall we took a break and sat at one place. Again our topic of Bollywood continued. Looking at the great fan following for Bappi Da, I made a WhatsApp call to him. All were eagerly looking at my phone, and after two or three rings, there he replied “hello Vaidehi, kaise yaad kiya?” The crowd around me was shouting out of excitement. I told Bappi da that I am in Russia and his fans are around me, he smiled and conveyed his love to his fans. His fans requested him to sing two lines of the song “Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja”, to our surprise he sang almost the entire song and people were also singing in the chorus. It was like one live concert.

I was overwhelmed; the words were falling short to thank him. He said, tum khush, to mai khush, (Your happiness is my happiness) he hung up the phone with his typical laugh. The crowd was in shock, they couldn’t believe that their hero singer gave them a virtual concert. Most of them recorded that moment on their camera and played it at least a hundred times during the tour.

He was such a sweet person, his simplicity moved me. I returned to India with a small gift for him, but he said “mere Fans se tumne mujhe joda ye kya kam gift hai ka?” (You connected me with my fans, that gift is enough for me). Such humans are rare and they are really God sent.  It’s hard to believe God has taken him back.

He popularised the use of synthesised disco music in Indian cinema and sang some of his own compositions. He had delivered major box office successes in Bengali films like Amar Sangee, Asha O Bhalobasha, Aamar Tumi, Amar Prem, Mandira, Badnam, Raktelekha, Priya and so on. He was popular in the 1980s and 1990s with filmi soundtracks such as Wardat, Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Sharaabi, Naukar Biwi Ka, Naya Kadam, Masterji, Bewafai, Maqsad, Suraag, Insaaf Main Karoongaa, Dance Dance, Commando, Saaheb, Adhikar, Aaj Ka M.L.A. Ram Avtar.

Bappi Lahiri joined BJP in 2014. He was declared a BJP candidate from Sreerampur (Lok Sabha constituency) in West Bengal for the 2014 Indian general election and lost. Though he was known for disco-style songs where he brought orchestration and fusion of Indian music with international sounds and youthful upbeat rhythms. Although most of his songs were written for discotheques and dance numbers, yet to his credits, there are several melodious songs as well from a list of movies like Chalte Chalte and Zakhmee.

Bappi Lahiri was popular in the late 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s for the film soundtracks composed by him from films such as Naya Kadam, Aangan Ki Kali, Wardat, Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Masterji, Dance Dance, Himmatwala, Justice Chaudhury, Tohfa, Maqsad, Commando, Naukar Biwi Ka, Adhikar and Sharaabi.

He came to Mumbai when he was 19. He received his first opportunity in a Cinema of West Bengal, Daadu (1974) where he made Lata Mangeshkar sing his composition. The first Hindi film for which he composed music was Nanha Shikari (1973) and his first Hindi composition was Tu Hi Mera Chanda sung by Mukesh. The turning point of his career was Tahir Husain’s Hindi film, Zakhmee (1975), for which he composed music and doubled as a playback singer. He composed a duet with Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi named “Nothing Is Impossible”, for the same film.

His compositions Jalta Hai Jiya Mera (Kishore Asha duet) and Lata Mangeshkar solos like Abhi Abhi Thi Dushmani and Aao Tumhe Chand from the same film became popular and gave him recognition. The duet Phir Janam Lenge Hum sung by Kishore Lata became famous from the film Phir Janam Lenge Hum. All songs from the film Chalte Chalte (1976), became hits, thus bringing him recognition as a music director at the national level. He sang a duet with Sulakshana Pandit named Jana Kahan Hai which gave him recognition as a singer. Bappi Lahiri made a record by composing for 12 superhit silver jubilee movies starring Jetendra as the lead hero in the period 1983-1985. He entered the Guinness Book of World Records for recording over 180 songs for 33 films in 1986. His last rites took place this morning, a day after his death. Bappi Da, as he was known to everyone, was given a warm send-off by family, friends and fans. His final journey, from the family home in Juhu, Mumbai to the Pawan Hans crematorium, featured the two items that Bappi Lahiri was never seen without – his trademark sunglasses were intact and there was a golden chain nestled among the garlands. Bappi Lahiri died of sleep apnea on Tuesday night in a Mumbai hospital where he was being treated for a variety of ailments. He was 69.

France and EU to withdraw troops from Mali, remain in region

President Emmanuel Macron says France will withdraw its troops from Mali but maintain a military presence in neighbouring West African nations. Announcing the move during a Thursday news conference in Paris, Macron said, “We cannot remain militarily involved” alongside Malian transitional authorities with whom “we don’t share the strategy and goals.”

France has about 4,300 troops in the Sahel region, including 2,400 in Mali. The so-called Barkhane force is also involved in Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso and Mauritania. European leaders simultaneously announced Thursday that troops from the European-led military task force known as Takuba also would withdraw from Mali. The Takuba task force is composed of several hundred special forces troops from about a dozen European countries, including France.

Tensions have grown between Mali, its African neighbours and the European Union, especially after the West African country’s transitional government allowed Russian mercenaries to deploy in its territory.

French forces have been active since 2013 in Mali, where they intervened to drive Islamic extremists from power. But the insurgents regrouped in the desert and began attacking the Malian army and its allies.

Macron said support for civilians in Mali would continue, but he blamed the junta now ruling the country for its decision to hire a private Russian military contractor known as the Wagner Group that the EU accuses of fomenting violence and committing human rights abuses in Africa. Macron said a coalition of allies will remain present in Sahel and the Guinea Gulf to counter actions from Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

He said the fight against terrorism in the region requires “steadiness and tenacity.” The announcements followed Macron’s Wednesday night meeting with African and European leaders involved in the fight against Islamic extremists in the Sahel region. The Mali and Burkina Faso coup leaders were not invited since both nations were suspended from the African Union.

The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside a Punjab and Haryana High Court order granting an interim stay on a Haryana law providing 75 per cent quota in private sector jobs for residents of the state.

A bench of justices L Nageswara Rao and Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha also directed the Haryana government not to take coercive action against employers.

”We do not intend to deal with merits of matter as we propose to request the high court to decide expeditiously and not later than four weeks. Parties are directed not to seek adjournment and be present before court for fixing the schedule for hearing.

”In the meanwhile, Haryana is directed not to take coercive action against employers. The impugned order passed by the high court is set aside as the high court has not given sufficient reasons for staying the legislation,” the bench said.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for the Haryana government.

The order came on an appeal filed by the Haryana government challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court order granting an interim stay on its law providing 75 per cent quota in private sector jobs for residents of the state.

The high court, had on February 3, granted the interim stay on the Haryana government law based on pleas filed by various industry associations from Faridabad and other bodies in the state, including in Gurugram.

Mumbai Police summon BJP’s Kirit Somaiya over FIR for COVID-19 norms violation 11

Mumbai Police has issued summons to former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, asking him to appear before them in connection with an FIR registered against him for alleged violation of COVID-19 norms, an official said on Thursday.

The FIR was registered against Somaiya at suburban Santacruz police station in September last year under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).

The Santacruz police on Monday summoned BJP leader Somaiya to appear before them within 15 days with his written statement, or else legal action will be taken against him.

Somaiya on Thursday tweeted the summons copy and said the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government/police had registered one more case against him for visiting state minister Chhagan Bhujbal’s ”Benami” property in Santacruz.

An official from the Santacruz police station confirmed that Somaiya has been summoned in connection with the FIR registered against him last year after he visited Bhujbal’s bungalow in Hasnabad lane of Santacruz (West).

Somaiya had on Wednesday alleged that Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut during a recent press conference deliberately referred to the old controversy over ”19 bungalows” in Korlai village of Raigad district as he bore a ”grudge” against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his family members for not backing him when certain allegations were raised against him.

The BJP leader claimed it was a known fact that Rashmi Thackeray, wife of Uddhav Thackeray who also heads the Shiv Sena, had tendered a written ”apology” to the Korlai gram panchayat in the Raigad district in connection with the ”19 bungalows” controversy.

On Thursday, Somaiya tweeted the copy a letter dated May 23, 2019, claiming that Rashmi Thackeray had submitted a written application to transfer some houses in Raigad in her name.

He claimed that information received under the Right to Information (RTI) Act reveals that ”Rashmi Uddhav Thackeray and Manisha Ravindra Waikar in January and May 2019 wrote letters to Korlai village sarpanch Hemant Shantaram Patil, requesting transfer of houses with numbers from 787 to 805 in their name”.

Somaiya further claimed that the information received under the RTI also mentioned that ”Thackeray and Waikar purchased the land from Anvay Madhukar Naik on 30-4-2014”.

Manisha Waikar is the wife of Shiv Sena MLA Ravindra Waikar.

Rashmi Thackeray was unavailable for comments on the matter.

In May 2018, interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik were found dead at their bungalow in Alibaug (Raigad district). According to police, Anvay Naik had allegedly committed suicide.

On Tuesday, Sanjay Raut had launched a personal attack against Somaiya, who has been raising a slew of allegations against the Shiv Sena brass and other leaders of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi in the state.

Raut had alleged that the BJP leader’s son, Neil Somaiya, had links with Rakesh Wadhwan, an accused in the PMC bank fraud and demanded the arrest of the father-son duo.

Denying the allegations, Kirit Somaiya had said he was ready to face any investigation.

BJP’s Narayan Rane made scathing attacks on Sena’s Sanjay Raut

BJP’s Narayan Rane made scathing attacks on Sena’s Sanjay Raut 13

Union Minister Narayan Rane along with Keshav Upadhye, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, chaired a press conference in reply to Sanjay Raut’s earlier symposium. The press conference was held at the BJP office in Mumbai this evening; Rane attacked Sanjay Raut over numerous issues. Rane alleged that the Raut is eyeing Uddhav Thackeray’s chair, he said Raut has got a supari to remove Thackeray from the CM’s post and appoint himself in his chair, he was indirectly hinting at Sharad Pawar.

When Uddhav Thackeray first went to meet Sharad Pawar to discuss the formation of the government, Sanjay Raut and Aditya Thackeray were with him. Uddhav ji doesn’t understand that Sanjay Raut is undermining him. Sanjay Raut knows that today or tomorrow the CM’s post will be vacant,” said Rane. (Rane did not say why would CM’s post be vacant?) or Rane was trying to instigate Uddhav Thackeray?

Yesterday, Sanjay Raut was not conveyed or supported by prominent Shiv Sena leaders, there were some not much-known leaders but known faces were missing. Raut made his grand entry to Shiv Sena Bhavan and it was more of a strong show. He tried opening the window panes of Sena Bhawan, exactly like Balasaheb used to do but somehow those doors did not open. There were cameras chasing him from his Samna office to Sena Bhavan, in anticipation of some big expose, but his hollow press conference and aggressively abusive language were upsetting for many audiences including the media. Nevertheless, Raut Successfully projected himself larger than life, which has not gone well with his colleagues. Sanjay Raut really doesn’t need outside enemies to damage him. We cannot ignore the fact that he has gone all over India with the flagship of Shiv Sena. Maybe that is what is becoming the actual hindrance?

Rane was very sarcastic in his statements but his questions were corner Raut. Since Rane joined BJP, his prime focus was an attack on Shiv Sena, time and again he demeaned Sena leaders including Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aaditya. This time it was his official turn to take on ruling party leaders. If Rane was so much worried about Uddhav Thackrey, why was he talking about slapping him?

Sanjay Raut’s press conference held at Shiv Sena Bhavan on Tuesday heated up the political mesosphere in the state, many BJP leaders questioned the stand of Raut.  Sanjay Raut had retorted to the allegations made against the BJP. He alleged that certain BJP leaders tried to topple the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra and claimed that central agencies are being misused with the aim of bringing down the Shiv Sena-led government in Maharashtra. Stressing that the Shiv Sena-led government in Maharashtra government cannot be toppled, Raut said that the allegations levelled by the probe agencies against the Shiv Sena leaders and Thackerays’ are false.

Rane told media that Sanjay Raut joined Shiv Sena on June 2, 1992, as an editor. After being expelled from Marmik, he went to Lokprabha. He then wrote several articles against Balasaheb Thackeray. But Rane did not clarify how Balasaheb agreed to give him a job at Saamana if he was so critical about senior Thackeray. As Rane stated that Balasaheb had said that Sanjay Raut was looking into how to set fire into the house, then what made Balasaheb get Raut in his camp? Who made him Executive Editor of Marathi newspaper Saamana, published by then published by Balasaheb Thackeray? Is he questioning the integrity of senior Thackeray? Well, the matter is that Sanjay Raut alleged BJP, BJP should ask for the proof against the claims he made. But scathing attacks on irrelevant topics is a waste of time. Sanjay Raut is also the writer of Thackeray, a biopic about Bal Thackeray, released in 2019.

Rane said Raut became restless after Praveen Raut’s interview with ED, further Rane asked for the proof to present instead of alleging opposition leaders. He also questioned Raut’s relationship with Mumbai’s businessman Sujit Patkar and his partnership in Raut’s daughter’s company.  Rane raised a number of questions on the motives behind Raut’s allegations. Raut had also earlier questioned the intentions of BJP behind unleashing investigative agencies after his family members. Raut already explained his daughter’s company has nothing to do with Sujit Patker, well this topic is a matter of investigation.

On the other hand, BJP’s other leader Kirit Somaiya told the media that on February 18 he would be going to Korlai village regarding the controversial issue of 19 bungalows. All eyes are now on the allegations of 19 bungalows. Sanjay Raut said there are no such bungalows; Kirit Somaiya asked if there are no bungalows then why paid the rent. The Gram Panchayat has shown a valuation of Rs 5.42 lakh. Gram Panchayat had differed from Somaiya’s allegations.

BJP and Shiv Sena leaders locked horns over proving the wrong of the other side. Shiv Sena is in power if they have any proof or conclusive evidence of BJP leader’s scams and corruption, they should arrest them or at least lawfully take some action. There is no point in lingering on press conferences, at the same time if Sena Leaders have not done any wrong, then they should not bother about ED, CBI or other investigative agencies. History is evident how Jaya Lalitha or Mamata Banerjee, were haunted by ED and CBI but their governments never collapsed. In election seasons power play is predictable from the opposite sides, one needs to know how to deal with them.

Heart attack survivors less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, says study

Heart attack survivors less likely to develop Parkinson's disease, says study 15

Does heart attack have a connection to Parkinson’s disease? According to new research, people who have had a heart attack may be slightly less likely than people in the general population to develop Parkinson’s disease later in life. The study was published in the ‘Journal of the American Heart Association’, an open access, peer-reviewed journal of the American Heart Association.

Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder characterized by progressive loss of physical movement, including tremors, slow or slurred speech, and/or stiffness or limited range of motion for walking and other physical activities. There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, and it is also associated with behavioural changes, depression, memory loss and fatigue. Secondary Parkinsonism, which has symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease, may be caused by stroke, psychiatric or cardiovascular medications, or other illnesses.

“We have previously found that following a heart attack, the risk of neurovascular complications such as ischemic stroke [clot-caused stroke] or vascular dementia is markedly increased, so the finding of a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease was somewhat surprising,” said lead study author Jens Sundboll, M.D., PhD, from the departments of clinical epidemiology and cardiology at the Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark. “These findings indicate that the risk of Parkinson’s disease is at least not increased following a heart attack and should not be a worry for patients or a preventive focus for clinicians at follow-up.”

“It is not known whether this inverse relationship with risk of Parkinson’s disease extends to people who have had a heart attack. Therefore, we examined the long-term risk of Parkinson’s disease and secondary parkinsonism among heart attack survivors,” Sundboll said. The researchers examined health registries from the Danish National Health Service. They compared the risk of Parkinson’s disease and secondary parkinsonism among about 182,000 patients who had a first-time heart attack between 1995 and 2016 (average age 71 years old; 62 per cent male) and more than 909,000 controls matched for age, sex and year of heart attack diagnosis. The results were adjusted for a variety of factors known to influence the risk of either heart attack or Parkinson’s disease.

Over a maximum continual follow-up of 21 years, after adjusting for a wide range of potential confounding factors, the analysis found that when compared to the control group: there was a 20 per cent lower risk of Parkinson’s disease among people who had a heart attack; and a 28 per cent lower risk of secondary parkinsonism among those who had a heart attack. “For physicians treating patients following a heart attack, these results indicate that cardiac rehabilitation should be focused on preventing ischemic stroke, vascular dementia and other cardiovascular diseases such as a new heart attack and heart failure, since the risk of Parkinson’s appears to be decreased in these patients, in comparison to the general population,” Sundboll said.

Heart attack and Parkinson’s disease share certain risk factors, with higher risk found among elderly men and a lower risk among people who drink more coffee and are more physically active. Interestingly, however, some classic risk factors for a heart attack – such as smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes – are associated with a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease. In general, more heart attack patients smoke and have elevated cholesterol, either of which may explain the slightly reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease among heart attack survivors.

“There are very few diseases in this world in which smoking decreases risk: Parkinson’s disease is one, and ulcerative colitis is another. Smoking increases the risk of the most common diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease and pulmonary disease and is definitely not good for your health,” Sundboll noted. One limitation of the study is that there was not enough information about smoking and high cholesterol levels among the participants, which may have influenced the findings. In addition, the study population was vastly of white race/ethnicity, according to Sundboll, therefore, the findings may not be generalizable to people from diverse racial or ethnic groups.

Second wife not entitled to deceased husband's pension if first marriage not legally dissolved: Bombay HC 17

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday said that a second wife is not entitled to receive her deceased husband’s pension in cases where the second marriage had taken place without legal dissolution of the first one.

A division bench of Justices S J Kathawalla and Milind Jadhav dismissed a petition filed by Solapur resident Shamal Tate, challenging the state government’s decision denying her pension benefits.

As per the High Court order, Tate’s husband Mahadeo, a peon in the office of the Solapur district collector, died in 1996. Mahadeo was already married to another woman when he married the petitioner. After his death, Tate and Mahadeo’s first wife came to an agreement that the former would receive almost 90 per cent of the deceased’s retirement benefits, while the latter would get the monthly pension.

However, after Mahadeo’s first wife died of cancer, Tate wrote to the state government seeking that she be given Mahadeo’s pension dues henceforth. After much deliberation, the state government rejected the four applications made by Tate between 2007 and 2014.

Tate then approached the High Court in 2019 claiming that since she was the mother of Mahadeo’s three children, and the society knew them as husband and wife, she was eligible to receive the pension, especially since the first wife, who had been receiving the pension, was now dead. The court, however, held that several Supreme Court judgements had established that a second marriage must be held as void under the Hindu Marriage Act if it has been solemnised without legally ending the first marriage.

The bench observed that the state government had been correct in holding that only a legally wedded wife was entitled to family pension.

The court also said that Tate had not approached it with ”clean hands”, since as per the agreement between her and Mahadeo’s first wife, she had explicitly relinquished her rights to the monthly pension.

”The marriage of the petitioner (Tate) to the deceased is void as the same took place while the first wife of the deceased was alive, and while the first marriage was subsisting,” the bench said. ”In view of the findings, this writ petition stands dismissed,” it said.

In continuation of the tree cutting of yesterday, trees are still being hacked in Aarey forest as we speak. AAP volunteers tried to stop the work but a contingent of 100+ policemen is guarding the hacking. This reminds us of the Devendra Fadnavis era where trees were hacked using the might of the state.

What hurts the citizens of Mumbai more is that while Devendra Fadnavis openly declared his intentions of destroying Aarey, the Thackerays’ claim to be Paryavaran Premis and swear on their love for Mumbai while they secretly destroy it.

Using 2021 permissions for tree pruning, trees are being hacked by the Adani Power Plant. One of the explanations being floated is that new towers are being built to remove the ones presently in the proposed car shed site. What AAP wants to know is that if no car shed is being built then what is the need to move those decade old towers at all?

The MVA government has put up a weak defence for the Kanjurmarg car shed site in court, with the AG repeating the Fadnavis government rhetoric. It seems clear that they will relinquish Kanjurmarg and present the car shed in Aarey.

But let all political parties in Mumbai be warned, the AAP stands by Aarey and we will not let their nefarious designs succeed. We will continue our protests to ensure there is no more destruction of the forest.
