After years of bad precedents on journo-murder incidents, India (Bharat) has slightly improved the statistics this year, as there is a report of two journalists’ murder till date. The robust democracy with over a billion populace losses around six journalists to assailants each year, but this time it has reduced to two in the first six months of 2019.

The first victim belongs to Maharashtra as Anand Narayan was reportedly murdered on June 4 at Antop hill locality of Mumbai. Narayan, 38, was murdered at his residence by the miscreants. Mumbai police have already registered a murder case over the fateful incident. The second casualty was reported from Madhya Pradesh, where Chakresh Jain, 40, was burnt to death by assailants in Shahgarh locality on June 19.

India’s immediate neighbours, except Pakistan that routinely ranks among most dangerous countries for scribes, have shown encouraging statistics. Those nations including Bangladesh, Tibet (under China), Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Bhutan have not reported any incident of scribe-murders since January 1 this year. However, harassments to media persons have been reported from most of the countries in the Indian sub-continent.

Besides local journalist organisations, New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), etc. have condemned the spate of attacks and murders of media persons in India and called on the authority for urgent action to improve journalists’ safety in the vast country.

The largest democracy in the world lost six journalists (Navin Nischal, Vijay Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Syed Shujaat Bukhari, Achyuta N Sahu, and Chandan Tiwari) to assailants last year. Bihar based reporters namely Navin Nischal (35) and Vijay Singh (26) were hit by a running vehicle in Bhojpur locality on March 25 and they died on way to the hospital.

Next day, Madhya Pradesh journalist Sandeep Sharma (36) was deliberately mowed down by a truck in Bhind locality and the dedicated reporter on environment issues succumbed to injuries on March 26.

Kashmiri journalist Syed Shujaat Bukhari (50) was shot dead in Srinagar on 14 June by a group of militants. Jharkhand journalist Chandan Tiwari (32), who used to report on corruption issues, was abducted and later his body was found on October 30 in Chatra locality, where Doordarshan cameraperson Achyuta Nanda Sahu (34) was killed in a Maoist (ultra-Left) terror attack at Dantewada of Chhattisgarh on the same day.

2017 was reported as the deadliest year for journalists, as India witnessed the murders of Hari Prakash, Brajesh Kumar Singh, Shyam Sharma, Kamlesh Jain, Surender Singh Rana, Gauri Lankesh, Shantanu Bhowmik, KJ Singh, Rajesh Mishra, Sudip Datta Bhaumik, Naveen Gupta and Rajesh Sheoran.

Among the casualties, northeastern State of Tripura reported two incidents of journo-murder. Shantanu, a young reporter was beaten and stabbed to death during a protest demonstration at Mandai locality, where Sudip Datta was shot dead by a Tripura State Rifles constable at RK Nagar locality. Earlier it witnessed the murder of three media employees (Sujit Bhattacharya, Ranjit Chowdhury, and Balaram Ghosh) in 2013.

According to Reporters sans Frontieres (RSF)/Reporters without Borders, the number of countries regarded as safe, where journalists can work in complete security, continues to decline as authoritarian regimes have tightened their grip on the media. Hence journalists have to work against totalitarian propaganda, censorship, intimidation, physical violence and cyber-harassment across h world.

In the latest world media freedom index published by the Paris-based RSF, Norway topped the list of countries with admirable media freedom. Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, New Zealand, Jamaica, Belgium, etc follow it in the RSF’s 2019 World Press Freedom Index. On the other hand, North Korea, China, and Vietnam continue to be at the bottom of the list.

India (positioned at 140) is below than United States (48), Bhutan (80), Israel (88), Maldives (98), Nepal (106), Afghanistan (121), Sri Lanka (126), Myanmar (138) in the list, where Pakistan (142), Cambodia (143), Venezuela (148), Russia (149), Bangladesh (150), Vietnam (176), China (177), North Korea (179), Turkmenistan (180), etc follow it.

“Violence against journalists including police violence, attacks by Maoist fighters and reprisals by criminal groups or corrupt politicians is one of the most striking characteristics of the current state of press freedom in India. The killing of journalists in connection with their works indicates many dangers that journalists often face, especially those working for regional media outlets in rural India,” said Daniel Bastard of RSF.

Speaking to this writer recently from Paris, RSF’s south-Asian desk head also added that another worrying trend that needs to be addressed in the Indian sub-continent is the high level of censorship and self-censorship, lack of pluralism in certain countries and political affiliation of media group owners.

With mainstream journalism going increasingly online and the advent of alternative media, newer threats are rising, observed Daniel commenting, “We are now seeing online harassment of journalists by troll armies, dissemination of false information, and hate speech messages calling for the killing of journalists whose work displeases those in power and their supporters.”

US starts damage control exercise over Trump’s mediation offer on Kashmir issue

Kashmir issue, Donald trump, Narendra Modi, jammu and kashmir, india and pakistan dispute, india-pakistan, kashmir, us president, prime minister of india, narendra modi on jammu and kashmir dispute, After US President Donald Trump’s offer of mediation on Kashmir issue, India rejected it saying Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that no such request was made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the U.S President during the G20 summit in Osaka (Japan). The opposition party Congress welcomed the government’s reiteration of India’s ‘no third party involvement’ stand on the Kashmir issue but asked why PM Modi is mum over Trump’s claim that he (Modi) asked him to mediate on the issue. On the other hand, Pakistan PM Imran Khan welcomed Trump’s remarks and said if the US agrees, prayers of more than a billion people will be with him.

Strong reactions have come to the fore across India over this issue. The Parliament witnessed a ruckus over Trump’s remarks on Kashmir mediation. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned over this and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had to give a statement in the House. Leaders of opposition parties and ruling coalition NDA are on boil. India has not been engaging with Pakistan since an attack on the Air Force base at Pathankot in January of 2016 by Pakistan-based terrorists. It said that talks and terror cannot go together.

It is remarkable that Trump’s offer to mediate on the Kashmir issue came as he met Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House on Monday when the two leaders discussed a host of issues. India has lodged a strong protest with the US State Department over President Donald Trump’s controversial claim that PM Modi had asked him to mediate in the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan.

After this controversial statement, the Trump administration has launched a damage control exercise. The US State Department on Tuesday said that Kashmir is “bilateral” issue between India and Pakistan, and the US welcomes the two countries sitting down for talks. It also said Pakistan taking “sustained and irreversible” steps against terrorism is key to a successful dialogue with India. For more than a decade, the U.S. has consistently insisted that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan and it is for the two countries to decide on the nature and scope of the dialogue. “We believe the foundation for any successful dialogue between India and Pakistan is based on Pakistan taking sustained and irreversible steps against militants and terrorists on its territory. These actions are in line with Prime Minister (Imran) Khan’s stated commitments, and Pakistan’s international obligations,” the State Department spokesperson said.

Prior to this, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted, “We have seen @POTUS’s remarks to the press that he is ready to mediate, if requested by India & Pakistan, on Kashmir issue. No such request has been made by PM @narendramodi to US President.”

The Congress along with other opposition parties has demanded that PM Modi should clarify whether there has been a shift in India’s position of no third party involvement in the Kashmir issue after Trump offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on the matter. Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said India has never accepted third party mediation in Jammu and Kashmir. “To ask a foreign power to mediate in J&K by PM Modi is a sacrilegious betrayal of country’s interests. Let PM answer to the Nation!” he tweeted.

“I honestly don’t think Trump has the slightest idea of what he’s talking about. He has either not been briefed or not understood what (Prime Minister) Modi was saying or what India’s position is on 3rd-party mediation. That said, MEA should clarify that Delhi has never sought his intercession,” senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor tweeted earlier.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah wondered whether the Indian government will call the US President a liar or there has been a shift in India’s position on third party involvement in dispute. “Personally I think @realDonaldTrump is talking out of his hat when he says @PMOIndia asked for US involvement in solving the Kashmir issue but I’d like to see @MEAIndia call Trump out on his claim,” Abdullah tweeted.

CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury asked whether “our twitter-friendly PM” has the courage to rebut the US President who has made a public statement. “What does this say about our long-held position of sovereignty over the Indian state of J&K, as defined in the Shimla Agreement?” he said. “India has always maintained it’s a bilateral issue, with no scope for third-party interference. What is this government up to?” Yechury asked.

A stitch in time saves nine

Mumbai’s civic services are in a mess thanks to lack of civic sense which results in fatal accidents be it due to building collapses or trees getting uprooted mostly during monsoon seasons. A stitch in time saves nine and precautions are always better than cure. Trees needs maintenance as well and needs to be trimmed regularly to prevent mishaps of getting uprooted and dangerous ones need to be axed. Depleted buildings in very poor conditions need to be vacated urgently and government should prioritise their redevelopment with alternative arrangements.

Disaster Management Services are missing in Mumbai which needs to be revived. Safety of citizens should be the prime objective of the government and agencies or departments to look after people’s grievances should be made accountable for their work. Privatization of such department may cost government some extra sum but would bring in efficiency and accountability. Citizens cooperation too is a must and people too need to take precautionary measures such as proper repairs of their homes as well as surroundings that would help minimise mishaps. Mumbai has the wealthiest civic body and its revenues should be spent optimally so that the city is free from mishaps!

Amend tie breaker game rules

The recently concluded World Cup Cricket tournament’s final tie breaker game has thrown up few confusing questions. Though England were declared as the winners owing to the outcome of superior number of boundaries scored at the time of a tied super over, there seems to be some discontent regarding the basis of declaration of winners for the title in a tied game.

The overthrow controversy of 6 runs during super over and ICC‘s rule of 19.3 regarding overthrows needs to be rectified through a formal announcement by ICC, of late. The teams, critics and cricket fraternity are still unconvinced the way the winners were declared in the first ever world cup tie breaker post the super over match. As also the argument of joint winner declaration in case of a tie though valid will steer away the real excitement of seeing a single claimant to the world cup title.

It is high time now that the ICC sets aside clear instructions to declare a winner on the basis of performance metrics as made available than going by archaic rule of superior boundaries or on the basis of  a superior over, especially in crucial matches during finals. It is now important for the ICC to amend necessary rules to declare the tie match results in favour of only a high net run rate scoring teams amongst other frameworks and clear the air of confusion to cricket fans. The archaic Duckworth Lewis method of calculating runs during a weather affected match too needs an immediate overhaul by the experts aided by ICC.

CBI enquiry needed in Sakshi Mishra episode

Indian electronic media has once again shamefully put unpleasant episode of some Sakshi Mishra of Bareilly filing complaint against her MLA father from ruling BJP alleging threat to lives of herself and her husband because of inter-caste marriage. However, evidences from neighbours against her husband, his love for playing with pistols, his break-up of earlier engagement and visibly being over-aged as compared to Sakshi Mishra lead about serious doubts of conspiracy to blackmail MLA father. Even the priest said to have performed the marriage has now termed marriage-certificate to be fake.

It is doubted that Sakshi Mishra is continuously crying on TV channels for alleged threat from her father or being forced to speak against her father by some ones. This matter needs a thorough CBI investigation to find the real truth. During the CBI enquiry, Sakshi Mishra should be kept with honour in some comfortable place under police-vigilance for which payment can be equally shared by families of two sides both of which fortunately happen to be affording. Till CBI enquiry is over, even court-marriage between these two lawfully adults may not be allowed.

Young girls are now-a-days easily lured by boys for marriage to repent after marriage. Parents of girls in general can never be as cruel as being alleged by Sakshi Mishra with every doubt of levelling allegation under some pressure which the young girl is not able to elaborate. Indian society is moving far away of healthy ancient traditions, with love-marriages replacing traditional arranged marriages by parents who take matured decisions unlike immature decisions taken by young girls though lawfully being adult. Law should be amended whereby adult-age may be restored to 21 years that too with a condition that consent of parents of girl for marriage may be compulsory till she attains a matured age of 25 years.

BJP’s Piyush Goyal most secular leader

Piyush Goyal Taleem Ki Taquat,Piyush Goyal,Taleem ki taquat, taqatOn January 28, 2016, Union Minister Piyush Goyal had said that he used to recite Kalma `La-ilaha-illallah-muhammadur-rasulullah` every day before his Puja. He confessed this in a conference on how education empowers and energises communities. A video of this seminar has gone viral recently. While Hindu organisations and hardliners have criticised him for this, many people have appreciated his secular stand though he is a prominent leader of a hardline Hindu party.

Chanting `La-ilaha-illallah-muhammadur-rasulullah` before Puja is not wrong. It is Piyush Goyal’s belief. At the same time, it needs guts to confess this publically particularly for a leader from the saffron party. This is a proof that there are secular and balanced leaders like Piyush Goyal in the BJP. During the seminar, businessman and the Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University Zafar Sareshwala was also present.

Chetan Rajhans, Sanatan Sanstha National spokesperson told Afternoon Voice, “Piyush Goyal’s video indicates that how much religious liberal and tolerant a common Hindu is who dares to recite Kalma at the time of Puja. I have never heard or seen Asaduddin Owaisi say Jai Shri Ram before or after namaz. Also, I have never heard Azam Khan chanting shlokas of Gita in Mathura.”

On the other hand, Ashok Pandey, National spokesperson of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha said, “I am not surprised at reciting Kalma by Piyush Goyal. I doubt that all BJP leaders chant Kalma, including PM Narendra and HM Amit shah. PM Modi does not have guts to visit Shri Ram Lalla in Ayodhya as he fears Muslims will be offended. BJP leaders pretend to be Pro-Hindu but Ram is in their mouth and Islam is beside them. The RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat said that Hinduism is not complete without Islam. All BJP leaders are following footprints of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. They are deceiving Hindus in the name of religion. They are doing politics in the name of Ram. It is good that their real face is exposed. I am not stunned by video of Piyush Goyal.”

Suresh Chavan, the owner of Sudarshan News Channel asserted, “Piyush Goyal, if Hindus of Kashmir and Pakistan had recited Kalma like you, their mothers and sisters would not have been raped before them and they had not lost their land and property. Mughal emperor Aurangzeb was pressurising Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj to recite Kalma but he denied. As a result of this, his body parts had been being cut into pieces for 39 days. Over 50 crore Hindus had lost their life in history so far for not chanting this very Kalma.”

After the 56 seconds-video went viral, social media went abuzz with comments against Piyush Goyal and the BJP. A lot of people also came in support of him. According to Twitter, Ritu (Satyasadhak) #EqualRightsToHindus @RituRathaur tweeted,” Hindus start their Puja with”Ganesh Vandana”. But @PiyushGoyal starts his with “la ilaha illallah muhammadur rasulullah” & we had hoped these people will help us bring in civilisational revolution. Will help this 10000-yr old culture survive from clutches of Christo Islamic forces?”

Chitra Sundaram @SundaramChitra tweeted, “Will Owaisi chant Gayatri mantra before his prayers? Why are these worms having such low self respect?”

Advaita @AdiShankaraa tweeted, “Appeasement at its zenith. Disgusting to the core! Here’s a video that unmasks the sabka vishwaas govt & its dhimmi leaders.”

#WakeUpHinduIntegratedIndian @Soldiers_Son tweeted, “Never heard of any Muslim prayer starting with Gayatri mantra. BJP is going one step ahead of Congress in appeasing Muslims. What are they going to get by doing such antics? Muslims still won’t vote for them and they will only anger Hindus with this. So upsetting.”

Esha Agerwala @Deveshvari tweeted, “Satyanaash… Sorry to say… ! Hindus need to find a new leader.”

Biraja Nath @birajanath tweeted, “IF BJP continues with such appeasement, then sooner BJP will be rejected by people…. Cong took 60 years to become Muslim party, but BJP would become in 10 years time…”

Sankrant Sanu @sankrant tweeted, “Madness. Does @PiyushGoyal know what he is saying? It means he has converted to Islam, proclaiming that there is no god but Allah and Mohammad is His prophet. He might as well piss on the “idols of Hindus” after that.”

P V Natarajan @pvnatarajan tweeted, “BJP can never be trusted by Hindus. They also never claim themselves as a Hindu party. It’s becoming worse than Congress.”

Ram Gopal @ramgopaldass_77 tweeted,“Compare and contrast this action with that of ex-UPA Rail minister E. Ahmed who refused to light a kuthuvilakku (Lamp), at a national seminar saying it was an “unIslamic action”….Even Congress men in that meeting were taken aback by the actions of that Minister…”

Mohan Reddy @ReddyMohan tweeted, “It is clear now no politician, not even BJP will defend Hindus. We have to defend ourselves. Be ready for that.”

Amit Sharma @Sharmaroyals tweeted, “Shameless minister who took oath of secular constitution doing appeasement in open. This is not the party we voted for.”

Social conditioning to be blamed for plagiarism

Is plagiarism an accepted part of the education system in India? In other words, will cultural difference play a role in this? Well, as a writer, there are some measured parameters of plagiarism. A writer should describe his/her ideas or the concept without copying someone’s ideas or intellectual properties. However, if suppose the ideas are conceived or copied out of someone’s intellectual property, then one must give them due credit too. It doesn’t matter whosoever the source is. Taking acclaim for somebody else’s work is theft, whether you do it intentionally or by accident. This is what you will read everywhere when it comes to defining the term ‘plagiarism’.

Let’s go a little deep and think why this is imbibed in our minds and we don’t feel bad about copying or imitating anyone. The social conditioning of mind plays a greater role since birth. You are taught to call “BLACK” colour as black, you identify that colour because it’s termed and everyone calls the same. Suppose a child disowns this conditioning and says that ‘no for me this colour means RGB that is 255 per cent Red, 255 per cent Green, and 255 per cent Blue or he/she may define that as something else.

Will we accept the child as normal or as above intellect? No! We won’t because he is refusing to accept the conditioning; whosoever tries refusing these so-called protocols and parameters, we call them eccentric or lunatic. We are occupied and framed with typical thought process and lifestyle where we are made to believe that what my father thinks is a great thought and what my mother says or thinks is compulsory to follow. They cite examples of my elder sister or brother, who are blindly following so many such people of this society, whom they think as the idols. This is the birth of remote plagiarism in you.

Your name, your surname, and your identity — everything is availed by so many before you are born but somewhere your parents forget to give credits to the possessor. We act, we think, we are influenced by many and act like many; rarely we realise that we are an independent individual. Suppose if you realise you are independent and you refuse to follow others, you are outcaste or awkward.

Social conditioning comprises all of the messages and beliefs that you are programmed with over the years of your life. It comes from various sources. Due to social conditioning, we are grown with low self-esteem. Our mind is like raw clay, it absorbs everything that is in the environment. It doesn’t matter if we agree with what’s happening in the environment, it doesn’t matter if we HATE what’s happening. We will become more like the environment over time and will have no other choice.

This kills your self-confidence because rather than looking to who you are on the inside to determine yourself worthy, social conditioning drills you into the habit. Social conditioning, on the other hand, tells you how you should live, how you should think, how you should be like. It also tells you that if another guy has some qualities, you should respect him and try to follow his path. The absolute key to having confidence is to define yourself based on your own standards, move through the world by your own compass and not by the standards of social conditioning. Average members in our society are hypocrites and they unwantedly become moral custodians of your life, you accept them or refuse but they are going to ruin your minds with their rules over your life and freedom.

Plagiarism is the beginning of these atrocities. You are asked to copy answers from the blackboard exactly as your teacher has written, then you copy answers from the brilliant student of your class, and you are compared with the child and asked to follow him/her; in rarest of the rare cases you are asked to be yourself and be what you are.

Students are the one fondest of plagiarising and they have their own reasons for it. First on the list is the lack of time. Students do not know how to manage time. They are not aware of the extent of work and put it off until the last minute lacking time for original work while others do not trust their own capability. Instead, they get insecure about the work of those professional ones. As they read the professional’s work, they think that they lack the knowledge to come up with as good as their work, and all students aim for a high grade. They tend to focus on what grade they will receive. They do not care whether they learn something from it. Others tell that not only they are doing it, but they are also tempted to do so since others still get a grade or are not punished by doing so without any effort.

Even those very responsible students tend to plagiarise also. It is because they are afraid of getting a low grade. For them, it is unfair that others will get a higher grade by plagiarising. It seems that their effort is useless. The students did not even find time to analyse their topic since their professor did not require a presentation of it. Students should put in mind that what’s more important is how they develop their own style of writing and how they understand the topic.

Dictionary definition of a particular word is plagiarism. Moreover, there are certain things for example — TOP TEN HACKERS in the world, there will be the same answer everywhere. Same names, same descriptions, and same information widely available, now whom to trust? Suppose if a writer refutes saying, ‘Oh suck! They are not the top ten, I don’t think they are extraordinary anyways’, readers or the community members will say, look how stupid is this person. When a hundred writers endorse these ten as the top then why she has to prove them wrong?

If I have to write about “Indira Gandhi” and I have not seen her, then I have to rely on the limited sources those who know her or those who have already written about her. The only difference that I can create is by modifying the existing info. A paraphrase does not always prevent plagiarism. You must change not only the word itself but also the structure of the sentence of the original without changing its content. Paraphrasing is also to lessen the quotations in your paper. It is also more advantageous to put the facts from other sources which you know will support your own ideas to make it more valid. Remember, even a small part copied without citation is plagiarism. You have committed plagiarism anytime you borrow from the original source.

Generally, it is easy to find information about every topic on the Internet and most of us are dependent on online sources. Some are smart enough to modify the content and enhancing the new look to the original. However, when you are not smart, you have to be extra attentive about keeping track of the source of information and thoughts and about giving proper credit to the authors of the sources you use.

So, instead of looking at the point why it happened or in what circumstances this occurred, plagiarism is not accepted in anyway, but there is no check on these issues. Copying some senior’s project and submitting it is common in schools and even no one raises any objections against it; no one is made aware of the seriousness of this subject at the school level. Moreover, this is an easier method of completing every task and unknowingly done mistake.

Cases of plagiarism in India are not restricted to students but even authors, journalists, professors, film producers, music directors, lawyers while making drafts and documents and published researchers have been found guilty of this practice.

In the recent past, such acts are being practised by the scientists and archaeologists too. There is no specific law or constitutional provisions to this issue. In maximum times, this happens out of an extreme passion for someone’s writing, you try to follow them, their style and remain one like. You cannot call it a culture, India has fewer cases of plagiarism. Look at the USA and UK, there are so many high profile issues over plagiarism. No country can ever boast about not having plagiarism issues.

Chandrayaan-2 successfully launched

Chandrayaan2,chandrayaan,isro,drdo,mission mangal

India scripted history on Monday when its second lunar mission Chandrayaan-2 was successfully launched into space at 2.43 pm from Sriharikota. About 16.20 minutes after the lift-off, the GSLV rocket injected Chandrayaan-2 into 170 km x 39059 kms Earth orbit. Chandrayaan-2 is a fully indigenous mission. It will make India the fourth country to soft land on the lunar surface after Russia, the United States, and China. Nearly 5,000 people gathered to witness the launch of Chandrayaan-2 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. PM Narendra Modi and several leaders congratulated the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on this historic success.

Scientists led by ISRO chief K Sivan broke into applause after every key stage of the rocket’s flight which progressed precisely as programmed. ISRO chief Sivan announced the success of the mission. He said, “It is the beginning of a historical journey of India towards the moon. We bounced back in flying colours after the earlier technical snag.”

Just a week earlier on July 15, the 3,850-kg Chandrayaan-2 lift-off was aborted due to a technical snag. The Rs 978-crore Moon mission Chandrayaan-2, which will go the Moon’s south-polar region, aims to explore its surface for the signs of water and possibly new origins of energy. 20-hour countdown for the launch began at 6.43 pm on Sunday. India’s second Moon mission came 11 years after ISRO’s successful first lunar mission Chandrayaan-1.

Aim of the mission

It is worth mentioning that Chandrayaan-2 has several science payloads to expand the lunar scientific knowledge through a detailed study of topography, seismography, mineral identification and distribution, surface chemical composition, thermo-physical characteristics of topsoil and composition of the tenuous lunar atmosphere, leading to a new understanding of the origin and evolution of the Moon.

ISRO’s Bahubali

The GSLV Mk-III (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark) carried Chandrayaan 2 to its designated orbit. This three-stage vehicle is India’s most powerful launcher to date and is capable of launching 4-ton class of satellites to the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). The GSLV Mk-III is also called ISRO’s Bahubali.

Pragyan Rover

Chandrayaan 2’s Rover is a 6-wheeled robotic vehicle named Pragyan, which translates to ‘wisdom’ in Sanskrit. It can travel up to 500 m (half-a-km) and leverages solar energy for its functioning. It can only communicate with the Lander.

Vikram lander

The Lander of Chandrayaan 2 is named Vikram after Dr. Vikram A Sarabhai, the Father of the Indian Space Programme. It is designed to function for one lunar day, which is equivalent to about 14 Earth days. Vikram has the capability to communicate with IDSN at Byalalu near Bangalore, as well as with the Orbiter and Rover. The Lander is designed to execute a soft landing on the lunar surface.

First mission to South Pole

Chandrayaan-2 is the first mission to the lunar South Pole. There also is a likelihood of water being present in the areas that permanently in shadow around the lunar South Pole. Moreover, the South Pole region has craters that are cold traps and comprise a fossil record of the early solar system. According to ISRO, the Chandrayaan-2 mission will help to expand the boundaries of human knowledge.

On the day of landing, the lander will separate from the Orbiter and then perform a series of complex maneuvers comprising of rough braking and fine braking. Imaging of the landing site region prior to landing will be done for finding safe and hazard-free zones.

Main attractions of Chandrayaan-2

  1. Lander capable of ‘Soft Landing’ on the lunar surface. A total number of 38 soft landing attempts on the moon have been made so far. The success rate is 52 per cent.
  2. Algorithm wholly developed by India’s scientific community.
  3. Rover capable of conducting in-situ payload experiments.
  4. Weight of Chandrayaan-2 is 3,850-kg.
  5. Its cost is Rs 978-crore.
  6. The mission will undergo a series of manoeuvres by scientists to carry out different phases of the mission over the next 48 days.
  7. Chandrayaan 2 will make India the fourth country to soft land on the lunar surface after Russia, the United States, and China.

#Chandrayaan2 lifts off from Sriharikota centre

Chandrayaan 2 4

The landmark mission to the moon- Chandrayaan-2 was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh at 2.43 pm on Monday.

This was the second attempt at launch. The first attempt on 15 July was aborted due to technical glitch.

With Chandrayaan-2, India will become only the fourth country in the world to place a rover on the Moon. Previously, the United States, Russia and China have landed rovers on the Moon.

Old buildings in Mumbai – A case of sheer negligence – Part II

bhiwandi, building collapse, building crash, mumbai, thane building collapseObviously, those who died mostly belonged to different families. Where is affordable housing these days? My heart goes out to the families of the victims.

What is amazing is that tenants, knowing fully well that the structures are illegal, rent it with risk. What is more surprising is that the electricity department provides power connection meters to these building helping out the cause of stay.  If you look at it, you realise that there were violations by everyone concerned and such a deadly cocktail had to end in some catastrophe such as a building collapse of an illegal structure. Did those who rent space in the buildings imagine that disasters happened only to other people? They are as culpable in this crime as the owner and the officials.

BMC has failed to follow construction norms strictly and educate the residents of dilapidated buildings in a better way to avoid such fatal mishaps and that made matters worse. Residents on the other hand fail to adhere to Municipal Corporation’s instructions and pay heavy price for that. The residents not only lose their property as well life of near and dear ones. Now BMC should check and on erring builders, who resort to illegal construction without proper plan and permission. Building crash in Bhiwandi and other similar incidents have created a fear psychosis among the residents. The residents will have to seek permission from the society before making alternations within and outside the building. Even unauthorised extensions will have to be condemned and if required needs to be demolished with BMC supervision. This will give other residents the fear when they look for extra space within the four walls and not to occupy the space not meant for them as per the plan.

Awareness about not changing the main walls and beams had always been there and a close watch needs to be taken. The impetus for these long needed changes has come in the wake of recent building collapses during the monsoon season. Instead of just conducting an inquiry and just brush aside the matter civic body should have a holistic approach to the crux of the problem in building crashes of this nature. One of the various arguments given as to the causes of building collapses were laxity in implementation of building by-laws. Whether BMC officials will pay heed to the fact and act fast before some more buildings fall and cause major losses.

FEATURE LETTER DIARY 679x400 e1545637164261Death of a political icon Sheila Dixit

In the death of three-term former Chief Minister Sheila Dixit, Delhi has lost its loving daughter who was a mother to younger politicians cutting across party lines as was clear from tribute by Delhi BJP President Manoj Tiwari who became highly emotional while speaking to media on her death despite the fact that he recently won Lok Sabha against the departed leader who welcomed him like a mother when he went to seek her blessings on winning election against her.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia while declaring two-day state-mourning and state-funeral on her death, even cancelled their personal pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi. Above all, Prime Minister Narendra Modi  joined unending stream of politicians and others having visited her residence to offer flower-tribute on her dead body on behalf of complete nation. She was a political icon who crossed all political boundary lines through her personal relations even in opposition camps.

Very few may remember that Sheila Dixit while she was Chief Minister of Delhi made an appeal to political community to boycott mega-budgeted marriage-celebrations. The political community may bring this aspect in practice as true tribute to the departed soul.

Sheila Dixit’s demise is an irreparable loss for Congress

l was shocked to hear about the demise of Sheila Dikshit, the longest-serving chief minister of Delhi.  As far as l recollect, she was an unparalleled personality and a true daughter of the soil. Undoubtedly, her demise is a great loss for Congress as political party, with whom she was associated for so many years. Her demise will be a great loss for Delhi and for the people living there, considering the immense development work undertaken by the state government under her leadership. She will be specially remembered for her copybook planning and implementation of different development projects in Delhi. The state witnessed implementation of maximum number of development projects during her 15-year long tenure from 1998 to 2013. It will be not an exaggeration to say that she changed the face of Delhi in true sense. I am sure that residents of Delhi now are feeling the pain of loss of a family member. She is also counted among the tallest leaders of Congress party. There are lot of things to learn  from her personality, style of administration and her interaction in public life. Her demise is an irreparable loss for Congress, which is currently going through a crisis phase.

An open letter to the BEST undertaking

I want to draw to your attention towards the rude and irresponsible behaviour of both the drivers and the bus conductors with the commuters. They look towards the passengers with indifference and behave with them in a very unfriendly and absurd way. They lack etiquettes and use filthy language most of the time.

Generally, the bus drivers do not stop the bus at the actual bus stop; they rather disdain the travellers and stop the bus before or after the actual bus stop so the passengers have to run in order to board the bus. In this way, many commuters fall and feel a lot of irritation and insult.

No less irresponsible is the behaviour of the conductors. They never bother to check whether the passengers have got into the bus or not and are bent on ringing the bell. The bus moves while the passengers have hardly put one foot on the foot board. This leads to the passengers falling and sustaining injuries. They forget the elementary duties of the conductors and behave indecently. They show no courtesy and sympathy for  senior citizens and women.

It is, therefore, my humble suggestion that before their recruitment, the drivers and the conductors must be taught how to deal with the passengers. Presently, they must be instructed and advised suitably to mend their ways, and also, surprise checking in this respect must be done.

Pune-Solapur Highway: A Killer Road

Pune -Solapur highway is becoming a killer road as many accidents involving heavy vehicles and cars are taking place mostly during week-ends. Despite frequent accidents it is becoming a death trap to passengers travelling in this route. Speed thrills these erring drivers and it kills the people as well in the process. Apart from speed, the lane cutting caused most of these accidents. This is ninth accident in this route and the authorities, who collect exorbitant toll fee should take care to curtail accidents as well by regular picketing by police and levying fine on erring drivers resorting to over speed. Alcohol Breath Analyzers (ABA) are to be used in all focal points to make sure drunk driving is curtailed to the minimum. More and more cases of negligence and overtaking caused major accidents. Time tested methods will have to applied and see that the accident rates reduced to almost negligible in this particular route.

On July 8, the SIT had arrested Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru urban district BM Vijay Shankar for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 1.5 crore from Khan. Shankar had taken the bribe in exchange for a favourable report after the Reserve Bank of India had asked the state government to investigate the firm’s business.
